Then the king of Egypt gathered great forces, like the sand by the seashore, and many ships; and he tried to get possession of Alexander's kingdom by trickery and add it to his own kingdom.1 - Il re d’Egitto mise assieme un esercito numeroso come la rena che è sulla spiaggia del mare, e molti vascelli; e cercava d’avere con Inganno il regno d’Alessandro, ed unirlo al suo.
He set out for Syria with peaceable words, and the people of the cities opened their gates to him and went to meet him, for Alexander the king had commanded them to meet him, since he was Alexander's * father-in-law.2 Si mosse verso la Siria con parole pacifiche e la gente gli apriva le città e gli andava incontro, perchè il re Alessandro aveva ordinato che uscissero ad incontrarlo, essendo suo suocero.
But when Ptolemy entered the cities he stationed forces as a garrison in each city.3 Quando poi Tolomeo era entrato nelle città, lasciava in ciascuna una guardia di suoi soldati.
When he * approached Azotus, they showed him the temple of Dagon burned down, and Azotus and its suburbs destroyed, and the corpses lying about, and the charred bodies of those whom Jonathan * had burned in the war, for they had piled them in heaps along his route.4 Ed avviandosi ad Azoto, gli mostravano il tempio di Dagon bruciato, Azoto e le sue adiacenze demolite, cadaveri sparsi, e i tumuli del caduti in guerra, eretti lungo la strada.
They also told the king what Jonathan had done, to throw blame on him; but the king kept silent.5 E raccontarono al re ciò che aveva fatto Gionata, per metterlo in mala vista; ma il re si tacque.
Jonathan met the king at Joppa with pomp, and they greeted one another and spent the night there.6 E Gionata venne incontro al re In Joppe, solennemente; si salutarono l'un l’altro, e passarono ivi la notte.
And Jonathan went with the king as far as the river called Eleutherus; then he returned to Jerusalem.7 Di poi, andò Gionata col re sino al fiume chiamato Eleutero, ed indi tornò in Gerusalemme.
So King Ptolemy gained control of the coastal cities as far as Seleucia by the sea, and he kept devising evil designs against Alexander.8 Il re Tolomeo si impossessò delle città sino a Seleucia marittima, e macchinava contro Alessandro mali consigli.
He sent envoys to Demetrius the king, saying, "Come, let us make a covenant with each other, and I will give you in marriage my daughter who was Alexander's wife, and you shall reign over your father's kingdom.9 Mandò ambasciatori a Demetrio, dicendogli: «Vieni, facciamo alleanza fra noi; ti darò la figlia mia, che ora ha Alessandro, e tu regnerai nel regno del padre tuo.
For I now regret that I gave him my daughter, for he has tried to kill me."10 Mi pento d’avergli dato la mia figliuola, perchè ha cercato d’uccidermi ».
He threw blame on Alexander * because he coveted his kingdom.11 Cosi lo infamava, perchè ambiva il suo regno.
So he took his daughter away from him and gave her to Demetrius. He was estranged from Alexander, and their enmity became manifest.12 Portò dunque via la figliuola, e la dette a Demetrio; si staccò da Alessandro, e rese pubblica la sua inimicizia.
Then Ptolemy entered Antioch and put on the crown of Asia. Thus he put two crowns upon his head, the crown of Egypt and that of Asia.13 Tolomeo dunque entrò in Antiochia, e si mise in capo due corone: dell'Egitto e dell’Asia.
Now Alexander the king was in Cilicia at that time, because the people of that region were in revolt.14 Quanto al re Alessandro in quel tempo, era in Cilicia, perchè in quelle regioni gli s’erano ribellati.
And Alexander heard of it and came against him in battle. Ptolemy marched out and met him with a strong force, and put him to flight.15 Alessandro informato, venne a far guerra a Tolomeo; ma questi mise in campo il suo esercito, lo assali con grandi forze, e lo mise in fuga.
So Alexander fled into Arabia to find protection there, and King Ptolemy was exalted.16 Alessandro fuggi in Arabia, per esser ivi al sicuro, ed il re Tolomeo s’aggrandì.
And Zabdiel the Arab cut off the head of Alexander and sent it to Ptolemy.17 Ma Zabdlel arabo tagliò la testa ad Alessandro, e la mandò a Tolomeo.
But King Ptolemy died three days later, and his troops in the strongholds were killed by the inhabitants of the strongholds.18 Dopo tre giorni mori anche il re Tolomeo ; ed i suoi che erano nelle città fortificate furon uccisi dagli abitanti.
So Demetrius became king in the one hundred and sixty-seventh year. *19 E Demetrio ebbe il regno, l’anno centoscssantasette.
In those days Jonathan assembled the men of Judea to attack the citadel in Jerusalem, and he built many engines of war to use against it.20 In quel tempo, Gionata radunò quelli che eran in Giudea, per espugnare la rocca di Gerusalemme, e rizzarono contro di essa molte macchine.
But certain lawless men who hated their nation went to the king and reported to him that Jonathan was besieging the citadel.21 Alcuni iniqui, che odiavano la propria nazione, andarono al re Demetrio, e gli annunziarono che Gionata assediava la rocca.
When he heard this he was angry, and as soon as he heard it he set out and came to Ptolemais; and he wrote Jonathan not to continue the siege, but to meet him for a conference at Ptolemais as quickly as possible.22 Quando ciò seppe, sdegnato, venne subito a Tolemaide, e scrisse a Gionata che non assediasse la cittadella, ma venisse subito ad un colloquio con lui.
When Jonathan heard this, he gave orders to continue the siege; and he chose some of the elders of Israel and some of the priests, and put himself in danger,23 Ciò udito, Gionata ordinò si continuasse l’assedio; scelse a compagni de’seniori d’Israele e de’ sacerdoti, e si espose al pericolo.
for he went to the king at Ptolemais, taking silver and gold and clothing and numerous other gifts. And he won his favor.24 Prese oro ed argento e vestimenti e molti altri doni, ed andò al re in Tolemaide. E trovò favore al suo cospetto.
Although certain lawless men of his nation kept making complaints against him,25 Alcuni iniqui della sua nazione facevano denunzie a suo carico;
the king treated him as his predecessors had treated him; he exalted him in the presence of all his friends.26 ma il re gli fece quel che gli avevano fatto gli altri avanti a lui, e l’esaltò dinanzi a tutti i suoi amici.
He confirmed him in the high priesthood and in as many other honors as he had formerly had, and made him to be regarded as one of his chief friends.27 Gli confermò il sommo sacerdozio, e tutti gli altri privilegi che aveva già, e lo nominò primo de’ suoi amici.
Then Jonathan asked the king to free Judea and the three districts of Samaria * from tribute, and promised him three hundred talents.28 Gionata allora chiese al re che desse franchigia alla Giudea, alle tre toparchie, alla Samaria ed alle sue discendenze, e gli promise trecento talenti.
The king consented, and wrote a letter to Jonathan about all these things; its contents were as follows:29 Il re acconsenti, e di tutto ciò dette a Gionata il seguente rescritto:
"King Demetrius to Jonathan his brother and to the nation of the Jews, greeting.30 «Il re Demetrio, al fratello Gionata ed alla nazione giudea, salute.
This copy of the letter which we wrote concerning you to Lasthenes our kinsman we have written to you also, so that you may know what it says.31 Acciò lo sappiate, vi mandiamo copia della lettera che a vostro riguardo abbiamo inviata a Lastene nostro padre.
'King Demetrius to Lasthenes his father, greeting.32 Il re Demetrio, a Lastene padre suo, salute.
To the nation of the Jews, who are our friends and fulfil their obligations to us, we have determined to do good, because of the good will they show toward us.33 Abbiamo risoluto di fare del benefizii alla nazione giudea, in cambio della benevolenza che hanno per noi, essendo nostri amici, ed avendo essi per noi i dovuti riguardi.
We have confirmed as their possession both the territory of Judea and the three districts of Aphairema and Lydda and Rathamin; the latter, with all the region bordering them, were added to Judea from Samaria. To all those who offer sacrifice in Jerusalem, we have granted release from * the royal taxes which the king formerly received from them each year, from the crops of the land and the fruit of the trees.34 Decretiamo adunque che tutto il territorio della Giudea, e le tre città, Lidda e Ramata, che sono state aggregale dalla Samaria alla Giudea, e tutte le loro adiacenze, siano ad essi riserbate. A tutti quelli che offrono sacriflzii in Gerusalemme, ciò che prima da essi riceveva il re ogni anno sul frutti della terra e degli alberi,
And the other payments henceforth due to us of the tithes, and the taxes due to us, and the salt pits and the crown taxes due to us -- from all these we shall grant them release.35 ed il resto che a noi spettava delle decime e dei tributi, da ora in poi lo condoniamo loro; come pure i laghi del sale, e le corone che ci venivano presentate.
And not one of these grants shall be canceled from this time forth for ever.36 Tutto ciò concediamo loro; e niente di ciò verrà revocato nè ora nè mai.
Now therefore take care to make a copy of this, and let it be given to Jonathan and put up in a conspicuous place on the holy mountain.'"37 Or dunque abbiate cura di farne un rescritto, e datelo a Gionata, e sia posto sul monte santo, in luogo cospicuo ».
Now when Demetrius the king saw that the land was quiet before him and that there was no opposition to him, he dismissed all his troops, each man to his own place, except the foreign troops which he had recruited from the islands of the nations. So all the troops who had served his fathers hated him.38 Vedendo il re Demetrio che tutta la terra taceva innanzi a lui, e nulla gli si opponeva, rimandò tutto l’esercito, ciascuno al suo paese, eccetto le milizie straniere assoldate dalle isole delle nazioni. Tutti i soldati de’ padri suoi gli divenner nemici.
Now Trypho had formerly been one of Alexander's supporters. He saw that all the troops were murmuring against Demetrius. So he went to Imalkue the Arab, who was bringing up Antiochus, the young son of Alexander,39 Ora, v’era un certo Trifone, che parteggiava prima per Alessandro; vedendo che tutto l’esercito mormorava contro Demetrio, andò ad Emalcuel arabo, che aveva in tutela Antioco figlio d’Alessandro,
and insistently urged him to hand Antiochus * over to him, to become king in place of his father. He also reported to Imalkue * what Demetrius had done and told of the hatred which the troops of Demetrius * had for him; and he stayed there many days.40 ed insisteva presso di lui perchè glielo consegnasse, per farlo re in luogo del padre suo. E gli raccontava tutto quello che Demetrio aveva fatto, e l'inimicizia dei suoi soldati contro di luì; e rimase il molto tempo.
Now Jonathan sent to Demetrius the king the request that he remove the troops of the citadel from Jerusalem, and the troops in the strongholds; for they kept fighting against Israel.41 Allora Gionata mandò al re Demetrio, per ottenere che mandasse via quelli della cittadella di Gerusalemme e de' presidii, perchè erano un guaio per Israele.
And Demetrius sent this message to Jonathan, "Not only will I do these things for you and your nation, but I will confer great honor on you and your nation, if I find an opportunity.42 E Demetrio mandò a rispondere a Gionata: «Non questo soltanto farò per te e per la tua gente quando n’avrò l’occasione.
Now then you will do well to send me men who will help me, for all my troops have revolted."43 Ora però farai bene se mi manderai uomini in aiuto, perchè tutto il mio esercito m’ha lasciato ».
So Jonathan sent three thousand stalwart men to him at Antioch, and when they came to the king, the king rejoiced at their arrival.44 Gionata gli mandò in Antiochia tremila valorosi; si presentarono al re, ed il re godè della loro venuta.
Then the men of the city assembled within the city, to the number of a hundred and twenty thousand, and they wanted to kill the king.45 Ora, centoventimila uomini della città congiurarono, e volevano uccidere il re.
But the king fled into the palace. Then the men of the city seized the main streets of the city and began to fight.46 Questi fuggì nella reggia, e quelli della città occuparon le strade della città, e cominciarono a combattere.
So the king called the Jews to his aid, and they all rallied about him and then spread out through the city; and they killed on that day as many as a hundred thousand men.47 Il re chiamò in aiuto i Giudei, i quali accorsero a lui tutti insieme; poi si sparsero per la città,
They set fire to the city and seized much spoil on that day, and they saved the king.48 e misero a morte in quel giorno centomila uomini; dettero fuoco alla città, fecero gran preda in quel giorno, e liberarono il re.
When the men of the city saw that the Jews had gained control of the city as they pleased, their courage failed and they cried out to the king with this entreaty,49 Or quando quelli della città videro che i Giudei ne erano padroni assoluti, si persero d’animo, e gridarono al re supplichevoli:
"Grant us peace, and make the Jews stop fighting against us and our city."50 « Dacci la mano, e cessino i Giudei di far man bassa su noi e sulla città».
And they threw down their arms and made peace. So the Jews gained glory in the eyes of the king and of all the people in his kingdom, and they returned to Jerusalem with much spoil.51 Gettaron via le armi, e fecero la pace. Così i Giudei crebbero in stima dinanzi al re e dinanzi a tutti quelli del regno suo, acquistando fama nel regno, e tornarono a Gerusalemme carichi di preda.
So Demetrius the king sat on the throne of his kingdom, and the land was quiet before him.52 Il re Demetrio sedè sul soglio del regno suo, e la terra si tacque innanzi a lui.
But he broke his word about all that he had promised; and he became estranged from Jonathan and did not repay the favors which Jonathan * had done him, but oppressed him greatly.53 Ma rinnegò tutto quello che aveva detto, s’alienò da Gionata e non gli corrispose a seconda dei benefizii che ne aveva ricevuti; anzi, gli faceva molte vessazioni.
After this Trypho returned, and with him the young boy Antiochus who began to reign and put on the crown.54 Dopo queste cose, tornò Trifone, e con lui il fanciullo Antioco che fu fatto re e si cinse la corona.
All the troops that Demetrius had cast off gathered around him, and they fought against Demetrius, * and he fled and was routed.55 Allora gli s’unirono tutte le milizie che Demetrio aveva disperse, e combatterono contro Demetrio che voltò le spalle e fuggì.
And Trypho captured the elephants * and gained control of Antioch.56 Trifone catturò gli elefanti, e s’impadronì d’Antiochia.
Then the young Antiochus wrote to Jonathan, saying, "I confirm you in the high priesthood and set you over the four districts and make you one of the friends of the king."57 Ed il giovinetto Antioco scrisse a Gionata, dicendogli: « Tl confermo nel sacerdozio, ti do il dominio di quattro città, e tu sarai uno degli amici del re ».
And he sent him gold plate and a table service, and granted him the right to drink from gold cups and dress in purple and wear a gold buckle.58 Gli mandò vasellame d’oro per suo uso, e gli dette potestà dì bere in vasi d’oro, di vestir porpora, e di portar una fibbia d’oro.
Simon his brother he made governor from the Ladder of Tyre to the borders of Egypt.59 A Simone poi fratello di lui dette il governo della regione dai confini di Tiro a quelli d'Egitto.
Then Jonathan set forth and traveled beyond the river and among the cities, and all the army of Syria gathered to him as allies. When he came to Askalon, the people of the city met him and paid him honor.60 Or Gionata si mosse, per le città che sono al di là del fiume [Giordano], ed a lui si aggiunse in aiuto tutto l’esercito di Siria. Venne dunque ad Ascalon, e quelli della città gli andarono incontro onorandolo.
From there he departed to Gaza, but the men of Gaza shut him out. So he beseiged it and burned its suburbs with fire and plundered them.61 Di lì andò a Gaza; ma quel cittadini vi si chiusero, e Gionata l’assediò, ne incendiò i sobborghi, e li depredò.
Then the people of Gaza pleaded with Jonathan, and he made peace with them, and took the sons of their rulers as hostages and sent them to Jerusalem. And he passed through the country as far as Damascus.62 Allora quei di Gaza pregarono Gionata, ed egli fece pace con loro, e prese dei loro figli in ostaggio mandandoli a Gerusalem me ; poi, andò avanti la regione sino a Damasco.
Then Jonathan heard that the officers of Demetrius had come to Kadesh in Galilee with a large army, intending to remove him from office.63 E Gionata seppe che i generali di Demetrio s’erano raccolti in Cades di Galilea con un grande esercito, per impedirgli d'occuparsi degli affari del regno.
He went to meet them, but left his brother Simon in the country.64 Ed andò loro incontro, lasciando però in Giudea il fratello Simone.
Simon encamped before Beth-zur and fought against it for many days and hemmed it in.65 E Simone strinse d'assedio Betsura, e durò molto tempo ad attaccarla, bloccandovi i suoi cittadini.
Then they asked him to grant them terms of peace, and he did so. He removed them from there, took possession of the city, and set a garrison over it.66 E questi gli chiesero di fare la pace; lo concesse, li mandò via di lì, occupò la città, e vi pose un presidio.
Jonathan and his army encamped by the waters of Gennesaret. Early in the morning they marched to the plain of Hazor,67 Gionata poi e le sue truppe sì diressero al lago di Genesar, e prima di giorno furono nella pianura di Asor.
and behold, the army of the foreigners met him in the plain; they had set an ambush against him in the mountains, but they themselves met him face to face.68 Ed ecco, le file straniere venivano avanti per la pianura, lasciando altri appiattati pei monti. Gionata andò diritto incontro ad esse.
Then the men in ambush emerged from their places and joined battle.69 Ma quelli appiattati sbucarono fuori da' nascondigli, ed attaccaron battaglia.
All the men with Jonathan fled; not one of them was left except Mattathias the son of Absalom and Judas the son of Chalphi, commanders of the forces of the army.70 Allora i soldati di Gionata fuggirono tutti, e non rimase di loro che Matatia figlio d'Absalom, e Giuda figlio di Calfi, dei capi dell'esercito.
Jonathan rent his garments and put dust on his head, and prayed.71 Gionata si strappò le vesti, si sparse il capo di polvere, e pregò.
Then he turned back to the battle against the enemy * and routed them, and they fled.72 Poi tornò a battaglia coi nemici, li attaccò, e li mise in fuga.
When his men who were fleeing saw this, they returned to him and joined him in the pursuit as far as Kadesh, to their camp, and there they encamped.73 Quelli della sua parte che eran fuggiti, tornarono a lui, e tutti insieme inseguirono quelli sino ai loro accampamenti in Cades, e non andarono oltre.
As many as three thousand of the foreigners fell that day. And Jonathan returned to Jerusalem.74 Caddero in quel giorno, degli stranieri, tremila uomini. E Gionata tornò in Gerusalemme.
