Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition GREEK BIBLE
Then the king of Egypt gathered great forces, like the sand by the seashore, and many ships; and he tried to get possession of Alexander's kingdom by trickery and add it to his own kingdom.1 και βασιλευς αιγυπτου ηθροισεν δυναμεις πολλας ως η αμμος η παρα το χειλος της θαλασσης και πλοια πολλα και εζητησε κατακρατησαι της βασιλειας αλεξανδρου δολω και προσθειναι αυτην τη βασιλεια αυτου
He set out for Syria with peaceable words, and the people of the cities opened their gates to him and went to meet him, for Alexander the king had commanded them to meet him, since he was Alexander's * father-in-law.2 και εξηλθεν εις συριαν λογοις ειρηνικοις και ηνοιγον αυτω οι απο των πολεων και συνηντων αυτω οτι εντολη ην αλεξανδρου του βασιλεως συνανταν αυτω δια το πενθερον αυτου ειναι
But when Ptolemy entered the cities he stationed forces as a garrison in each city.3 ως δε εισεπορευετο εις τας πολεις πτολεμαιος απετασσε τας δυναμεις φρουραν εν εκαστη πολει
When he * approached Azotus, they showed him the temple of Dagon burned down, and Azotus and its suburbs destroyed, and the corpses lying about, and the charred bodies of those whom Jonathan * had burned in the war, for they had piled them in heaps along his route.4 ως δε ηγγισαν αζωτου εδειξαν αυτω το ιερον δαγων εμπεπυρισμενον και αζωτον και τα περιπολια αυτης καθηρημενα και τα σωματα ερριμμενα και τους εμπεπυρισμενους ους ενεπυρισεν εν τω πολεμω εποιησαν γαρ θιμωνιας αυτων εν τη οδω αυτου
They also told the king what Jonathan had done, to throw blame on him; but the king kept silent.5 και διηγησαντο τω βασιλει α εποιησεν ιωναθαν εις το ψογισαι αυτον και εσιγησεν ο βασιλευς
Jonathan met the king at Joppa with pomp, and they greeted one another and spent the night there.6 και συνηντησεν ιωναθαν τω βασιλει εις ιοππην μετα δοξης και ησπασαντο αλληλους και εκοιμηθησαν εκει
And Jonathan went with the king as far as the river called Eleutherus; then he returned to Jerusalem.7 και επορευθη ιωναθαν μετα του βασιλεως εως του ποταμου του καλουμενου ελευθερου και επεστρεψεν εις ιερουσαλημ
So King Ptolemy gained control of the coastal cities as far as Seleucia by the sea, and he kept devising evil designs against Alexander.8 ο δε βασιλευς πτολεμαιος εκυριευσεν των πολεων της παραλιας εως σελευκειας της παραθαλασσιας και διελογιζετο περι αλεξανδρου λογισμους πονηρους
He sent envoys to Demetrius the king, saying, "Come, let us make a covenant with each other, and I will give you in marriage my daughter who was Alexander's wife, and you shall reign over your father's kingdom.9 και απεστειλεν πρεσβεις προς δημητριον τον βασιλεα λεγων δευρο συνθωμεθα προς εαυτους διαθηκην και δωσω σοι την θυγατερα μου ην ειχεν αλεξανδρος και βασιλευσεις της βασιλειας του πατρος σου
For I now regret that I gave him my daughter, for he has tried to kill me."10 μεταμεμελημαι γαρ δους αυτω την θυγατερα μου εζητησεν γαρ αποκτειναι με
He threw blame on Alexander * because he coveted his kingdom.11 και εψογισεν αυτον χαριν του επιθυμησαι αυτον της βασιλειας αυτου
So he took his daughter away from him and gave her to Demetrius. He was estranged from Alexander, and their enmity became manifest.12 και αφελομενος αυτου την θυγατερα εδωκεν αυτην τω δημητριω και ηλλοιωθη τω αλεξανδρω και εφανη η εχθρα αυτων
Then Ptolemy entered Antioch and put on the crown of Asia. Thus he put two crowns upon his head, the crown of Egypt and that of Asia.13 και εισηλθεν πτολεμαιος εις αντιοχειαν και περιεθετο το διαδημα της ασιας και περιεθετο δυο διαδηματα περι την κεφαλην αυτου το της αιγυπτου και ασιας
Now Alexander the king was in Cilicia at that time, because the people of that region were in revolt.14 αλεξανδρος δε ο βασιλευς ην εν κιλικια κατα τους καιρους εκεινους οτι απεστατουν οι απο των τοπων εκεινων
And Alexander heard of it and came against him in battle. Ptolemy marched out and met him with a strong force, and put him to flight.15 και ηκουσεν αλεξανδρος και ηλθεν επ' αυτον εν πολεμω και εξηγαγεν πτολεμαιος και απηντησεν αυτω εν χειρι ισχυρα και ετροπωσατο αυτον
So Alexander fled into Arabia to find protection there, and King Ptolemy was exalted.16 και εφυγεν αλεξανδρος εις την αραβιαν του σκεπασθηναι αυτον εκει ο δε βασιλευς πτολεμαιος υψωθη
And Zabdiel the Arab cut off the head of Alexander and sent it to Ptolemy.17 και αφειλεν ζαβδιηλ ο αραψ την κεφαλην αλεξανδρου και απεστειλεν τω πτολεμαιω
But King Ptolemy died three days later, and his troops in the strongholds were killed by the inhabitants of the strongholds.18 και ο βασιλευς πτολεμαιος απεθανεν εν τη ημερα τη τριτη και οι οντες εν τοις οχυρωμασιν αυτου απωλοντο υπο των εν τοις οχυρωμασιν
So Demetrius became king in the one hundred and sixty-seventh year. *19 και εβασιλευσεν δημητριος ετους εβδομου και εξηκοστου και εκατοστου
In those days Jonathan assembled the men of Judea to attack the citadel in Jerusalem, and he built many engines of war to use against it.20 εν ταις ημεραις εκειναις συνηγαγεν ιωναθαν τους εκ της ιουδαιας του εκπολεμησαι την ακραν την εν ιερουσαλημ και εποιησεν επ' αυτην μηχανας πολλας
But certain lawless men who hated their nation went to the king and reported to him that Jonathan was besieging the citadel.21 και επορευθησαν τινες μισουντες το εθνος αυτων ανδρες παρανομοι προς τον βασιλεα και απηγγειλαν αυτω οτι ιωναθαν περικαθηται την ακραν
When he heard this he was angry, and as soon as he heard it he set out and came to Ptolemais; and he wrote Jonathan not to continue the siege, but to meet him for a conference at Ptolemais as quickly as possible.22 και ακουσας ωργισθη ως δε ηκουσεν ευθεως αναζευξας ηλθεν εις πτολεμαιδα και εγραψεν ιωναθαν του μη περικαθησθαι και του απαντησαι αυτον αυτω συμμισγειν εις πτολεμαιδα την ταχιστην
When Jonathan heard this, he gave orders to continue the siege; and he chose some of the elders of Israel and some of the priests, and put himself in danger,23 ως δε ηκουσεν ιωναθαν εκελευσεν περικαθησθαι και επελεξεν των πρεσβυτερων ισραηλ και των ιερεων και εδωκεν εαυτον τω κινδυνω
for he went to the king at Ptolemais, taking silver and gold and clothing and numerous other gifts. And he won his favor.24 και λαβων αργυριον και χρυσιον και ιματισμον και ετερα ξενια πλειονα και επορευθη προς τον βασιλεα εις πτολεμαιδα και ευρεν χαριν εναντιον αυτου
Although certain lawless men of his nation kept making complaints against him,25 και ενετυγχανον κατ' αυτου τινες ανομοι των εκ του εθνους
the king treated him as his predecessors had treated him; he exalted him in the presence of all his friends.26 και εποιησεν αυτω ο βασιλευς καθως εποιησαν αυτω οι προ αυτου και υψωσεν αυτον εναντιον των φιλων αυτου παντων
He confirmed him in the high priesthood and in as many other honors as he had formerly had, and made him to be regarded as one of his chief friends.27 και εστησεν αυτω την αρχιερωσυνην και οσα αλλα ειχεν τιμια το προτερον και εποιησεν αυτον των πρωτων φιλων ηγεισθαι
Then Jonathan asked the king to free Judea and the three districts of Samaria * from tribute, and promised him three hundred talents.28 και ηξιωσεν ιωναθαν τον βασιλεα ποιησαι την ιουδαιαν αφορολογητον και τας τρεις τοπαρχιας και την σαμαριτιν και επηγγειλατο αυτω ταλαντα τριακοσια
The king consented, and wrote a letter to Jonathan about all these things; its contents were as follows:29 και ευδοκησεν ο βασιλευς και εγραψεν τω ιωναθαν επιστολας περι παντων τουτων εχουσας τον τροπον τουτον
"King Demetrius to Jonathan his brother and to the nation of the Jews, greeting.30 βασιλευς δημητριος ιωναθαν τω αδελφω χαιρειν και εθνει ιουδαιων
This copy of the letter which we wrote concerning you to Lasthenes our kinsman we have written to you also, so that you may know what it says.31 το αντιγραφον της επιστολης ης εγραψαμεν λασθενει τω συγγενει ημων περι υμων γεγραφαμεν και προς υμας οπως ειδητε
'King Demetrius to Lasthenes his father, greeting.32 βασιλευς δημητριος λασθενει τω πατρι χαιρειν
To the nation of the Jews, who are our friends and fulfil their obligations to us, we have determined to do good, because of the good will they show toward us.33 τω εθνει των ιουδαιων φιλοις ημων και συντηρουσιν τα προς ημας δικαια εκριναμεν αγαθον ποιησαι χαριν της εξ αυτων ευνοιας προς ημας
We have confirmed as their possession both the territory of Judea and the three districts of Aphairema and Lydda and Rathamin; the latter, with all the region bordering them, were added to Judea from Samaria. To all those who offer sacrifice in Jerusalem, we have granted release from * the royal taxes which the king formerly received from them each year, from the crops of the land and the fruit of the trees.34 εστακαμεν αυτοις τα τε ορια της ιουδαιας και τους τρεις νομους αφαιρεμα και λυδδα και ραθαμιν προσετεθησαν τη ιουδαια απο της σαμαριτιδος και παντα τα συγκυρουντα αυτοις πασιν τοις θυσιαζουσιν εις ιεροσολυμα αντι των βασιλικων ων ελαμβανεν ο βασιλευς παρ' αυτων το προτερον κατ' ενιαυτον απο των γενηματων της γης και των ακροδρυων
And the other payments henceforth due to us of the tithes, and the taxes due to us, and the salt pits and the crown taxes due to us -- from all these we shall grant them release.35 και τα αλλα τα ανηκοντα ημιν απο του νυν των δεκατων και των τελων των ανηκοντων ημιν και τας του αλος λιμνας και τους ανηκοντας ημιν στεφανους παντα επαρκεσομεν αυτοις
And not one of these grants shall be canceled from this time forth for ever.36 και ουκ αθετηθησεται ουδε εν τουτων απο του νυν εις τον απαντα χρονον
Now therefore take care to make a copy of this, and let it be given to Jonathan and put up in a conspicuous place on the holy mountain.'"37 νυν ουν επιμελεσθε του ποιησαι τουτων αντιγραφον και δοθητω ιωναθαν και τεθητω εν τω ορει τω αγιω εν τοπω επισημω
Now when Demetrius the king saw that the land was quiet before him and that there was no opposition to him, he dismissed all his troops, each man to his own place, except the foreign troops which he had recruited from the islands of the nations. So all the troops who had served his fathers hated him.38 και ειδεν δημητριος ο βασιλευς οτι ησυχασεν η γη ενωπιον αυτου και ουδεν αυτω ανθειστηκει και απελυσεν πασας τας δυναμεις αυτου εκαστον εις τον ιδιον τοπον πλην των ξενων δυναμεων ων εξενολογησεν απο των νησων των εθνων και ηχθραναν αυτω πασαι αι δυναμεις αι απο των πατερων
Now Trypho had formerly been one of Alexander's supporters. He saw that all the troops were murmuring against Demetrius. So he went to Imalkue the Arab, who was bringing up Antiochus, the young son of Alexander,39 τρυφων δε ην των παρα αλεξανδρου το προτερον και ειδεν οτι πασαι αι δυναμεις καταγογγυζουσιν κατα του δημητριου και επορευθη προς ιμαλκουε τον αραβα ος ετρεφεν αντιοχον το παιδαριον τον του αλεξανδρου
and insistently urged him to hand Antiochus * over to him, to become king in place of his father. He also reported to Imalkue * what Demetrius had done and told of the hatred which the troops of Demetrius * had for him; and he stayed there many days.40 και προσηδρευεν αυτω οπως παραδοι αυτον αυτω οπως βασιλευση αντι του πατρος αυτου και απηγγειλεν αυτω οσα συνετελεσεν ο δημητριος και την εχθραν ην εχθραινουσιν αυτω αι δυναμεις αυτου και εμεινεν εκει ημερας πολλας
Now Jonathan sent to Demetrius the king the request that he remove the troops of the citadel from Jerusalem, and the troops in the strongholds; for they kept fighting against Israel.41 και απεστειλεν ιωναθαν προς δημητριον τον βασιλεα ινα εκβαλη τους εκ της ακρας εξ ιερουσαλημ και τους εν τοις οχυρωμασιν ησαν γαρ πολεμουντες τον ισραηλ
And Demetrius sent this message to Jonathan, "Not only will I do these things for you and your nation, but I will confer great honor on you and your nation, if I find an opportunity.42 και απεστειλεν δημητριος προς ιωναθαν λεγων ου ταυτα μονον ποιησω σοι και τω εθνει σου αλλα δοξη δοξασω σε και το εθνος σου εαν ευκαιριας τυχω
Now then you will do well to send me men who will help me, for all my troops have revolted."43 νυν ουν ορθως ποιησεις αποστειλας μοι ανδρας οι συμμαχησουσιν μοι οτι απεστησαν πασαι αι δυναμεις μου
So Jonathan sent three thousand stalwart men to him at Antioch, and when they came to the king, the king rejoiced at their arrival.44 και απεστειλεν ιωναθαν ανδρας τρισχιλιους δυνατους ισχυι αυτω εις αντιοχειαν και ηλθον προς τον βασιλεα και ηυφρανθη ο βασιλευς επι τη εφοδω αυτων
Then the men of the city assembled within the city, to the number of a hundred and twenty thousand, and they wanted to kill the king.45 και επισυνηχθησαν οι απο της πολεως εις μεσον της πολεως εις ανδρων δωδεκα μυριαδας και ηβουλοντο ανελειν τον βασιλεα
But the king fled into the palace. Then the men of the city seized the main streets of the city and began to fight.46 και εφυγεν ο βασιλευς εις την αυλην και κατελαβοντο οι εκ της πολεως τας διοδους της πολεως και ηρξαντο πολεμειν
So the king called the Jews to his aid, and they all rallied about him and then spread out through the city; and they killed on that day as many as a hundred thousand men.47 και εκαλεσεν ο βασιλευς τους ιουδαιους επι βοηθειαν και επισυνηχθησαν προς αυτον παντες αμα και διεσπαρησαν εν τη πολει και απεκτειναν εν τη ημερα εκεινη εις μυριαδας δεκα
They set fire to the city and seized much spoil on that day, and they saved the king.48 και ενεπυρισαν την πολιν και ελαβον σκυλα πολλα εν εκεινη τη ημερα και εσωσαν τον βασιλεα
When the men of the city saw that the Jews had gained control of the city as they pleased, their courage failed and they cried out to the king with this entreaty,49 και ειδον οι απο της πολεως οτι κατεκρατησαν οι ιουδαιοι της πολεως ως ηβουλοντο και ησθενησαν ταις διανοιαις αυτων και εκεκραξαν προς τον βασιλεα μετα δεησεως λεγοντες
"Grant us peace, and make the Jews stop fighting against us and our city."50 δος ημιν δεξιας και παυσασθωσαν οι ιουδαιοι πολεμουντες ημας και την πολιν
And they threw down their arms and made peace. So the Jews gained glory in the eyes of the king and of all the people in his kingdom, and they returned to Jerusalem with much spoil.51 και ερριψαν τα οπλα και εποιησαν ειρηνην και εδοξασθησαν οι ιουδαιοι εναντιον του βασιλεως και ενωπιον παντων των εν τη βασιλεια αυτου και επεστρεψαν εις ιερουσαλημ εχοντες σκυλα πολλα
So Demetrius the king sat on the throne of his kingdom, and the land was quiet before him.52 και εκαθισεν δημητριος ο βασιλευς επι θρονου της βασιλειας αυτου και ησυχασεν η γη ενωπιον αυτου
But he broke his word about all that he had promised; and he became estranged from Jonathan and did not repay the favors which Jonathan * had done him, but oppressed him greatly.53 και εψευσατο παντα οσα ειπεν και ηλλοτριωθη τω ιωναθαν και ουκ ανταπεδωκεν τας ευνοιας ας ανταπεδωκεν αυτω και εθλιβεν αυτον σφοδρα
After this Trypho returned, and with him the young boy Antiochus who began to reign and put on the crown.54 μετα δε ταυτα απεστρεψεν τρυφων και αντιοχος μετ' αυτου παιδαριον νεωτερον και εβασιλευσεν και επεθετο διαδημα
All the troops that Demetrius had cast off gathered around him, and they fought against Demetrius, * and he fled and was routed.55 και επισυνηχθησαν προς αυτον πασαι αι δυναμεις ας απεσκορακισεν δημητριος και επολεμησαν προς αυτον και εφυγεν και ετροπωθη
And Trypho captured the elephants * and gained control of Antioch.56 και ελαβεν τρυφων τα θηρια και κατεκρατησεν της αντιοχειας
Then the young Antiochus wrote to Jonathan, saying, "I confirm you in the high priesthood and set you over the four districts and make you one of the friends of the king."57 και εγραψεν αντιοχος ο νεωτερος ιωναθη λεγων ιστημι σοι την αρχιερωσυνην και καθιστημι σε επι των τεσσαρων νομων και ειναι σε των φιλων του βασιλεως
And he sent him gold plate and a table service, and granted him the right to drink from gold cups and dress in purple and wear a gold buckle.58 και απεστειλεν αυτω χρυσωματα και διακονιαν και εδωκεν αυτω εξουσιαν πινειν εν χρυσωμασιν και ειναι εν πορφυρα και εχειν πορπην χρυσην
Simon his brother he made governor from the Ladder of Tyre to the borders of Egypt.59 και σιμωνα τον αδελφον αυτου κατεστησεν στρατηγον απο της κλιμακος τυρου εως των οριων αιγυπτου
Then Jonathan set forth and traveled beyond the river and among the cities, and all the army of Syria gathered to him as allies. When he came to Askalon, the people of the city met him and paid him honor.60 και εξηλθεν ιωναθαν και διεπορευετο περαν του ποταμου και εν ταις πολεσιν και ηθροισθησαν προς αυτον πασα δυναμις συριας εις συμμαχιαν και ηλθεν εις ασκαλωνα και απηντησαν αυτω οι εκ της πολεως ενδοξως
From there he departed to Gaza, but the men of Gaza shut him out. So he beseiged it and burned its suburbs with fire and plundered them.61 και απηλθεν εκειθεν εις γαζαν και απεκλεισαν οι απο γαζης και περιεκαθισεν περι αυτην και ενεπυρισεν τα περιπολια αυτης εν πυρι και εσκυλευσεν αυτα
Then the people of Gaza pleaded with Jonathan, and he made peace with them, and took the sons of their rulers as hostages and sent them to Jerusalem. And he passed through the country as far as Damascus.62 και ηξιωσαν οι απο γαζης ιωναθαν και εδωκεν αυτοις δεξιας και ελαβεν τους υιους των αρχοντων αυτων εις ομηρα και εξαπεστειλεν αυτους εις ιερουσαλημ και διηλθεν την χωραν εως δαμασκου
Then Jonathan heard that the officers of Demetrius had come to Kadesh in Galilee with a large army, intending to remove him from office.63 και ηκουσεν ιωναθαν οτι παρησαν οι αρχοντες δημητριου εις κηδες την εν τη γαλιλαια μετα δυναμεως πολλης βουλομενοι μεταστησαι αυτον της χρειας
He went to meet them, but left his brother Simon in the country.64 και συνηντησεν αυτοις τον δε αδελφον αυτου σιμωνα κατελιπεν εν τη χωρα
Simon encamped before Beth-zur and fought against it for many days and hemmed it in.65 και παρενεβαλεν σιμων επι βαιθσουρα και επολεμει αυτην ημερας πολλας και συνεκλεισεν αυτην
Then they asked him to grant them terms of peace, and he did so. He removed them from there, took possession of the city, and set a garrison over it.66 και ηξιωσαν αυτον του δεξιας λαβειν και εδωκεν αυτοις και εξεβαλεν αυτους εκειθεν και κατελαβετο την πολιν και εθετο επ' αυτην φρουραν
Jonathan and his army encamped by the waters of Gennesaret. Early in the morning they marched to the plain of Hazor,67 και ιωναθαν και η παρεμβολη αυτου παρενεβαλον επι το υδωρ του γεννησαρ και ωρθρισαν το πρωι εις το πεδιον ασωρ
and behold, the army of the foreigners met him in the plain; they had set an ambush against him in the mountains, but they themselves met him face to face.68 και ιδου η παρεμβολη αλλοφυλων απηντα αυτω εν τω πεδιω και εξεβαλον ενεδρον επ' αυτον εν τοις ορεσιν αυτοι δε απηντησαν εξ εναντιας
Then the men in ambush emerged from their places and joined battle.69 τα δε ενεδρα εξανεστησαν εκ των τοπων αυτων και συνηψαν πολεμον
All the men with Jonathan fled; not one of them was left except Mattathias the son of Absalom and Judas the son of Chalphi, commanders of the forces of the army.70 και εφυγον οι παρα ιωναθου παντες ουδε εις κατελειφθη απ' αυτων πλην ματταθιας ο του αψαλωμου και ιουδας ο του χαλφι αρχοντες της στρατιας των δυναμεων
Jonathan rent his garments and put dust on his head, and prayed.71 και διερρηξεν ιωναθαν τα ιματια αυτου και επεθετο γην επι την κεφαλην αυτου και προσηυξατο
Then he turned back to the battle against the enemy * and routed them, and they fled.72 και υπεστρεψεν προς αυτους πολεμω και ετροπωσατο αυτους και εφυγον
When his men who were fleeing saw this, they returned to him and joined him in the pursuit as far as Kadesh, to their camp, and there they encamped.73 και ειδον οι φευγοντες παρ' αυτου και επεστρεψαν επ' αυτον και εδιωκον μετ' αυτου εως κεδες εως της παρεμβολης αυτων και παρενεβαλον εκει
As many as three thousand of the foreigners fell that day. And Jonathan returned to Jerusalem.74 και επεσον εκ των αλλοφυλων εν τη ημερα εκεινη εις ανδρας τρισχιλιους και επεστρεψεν ιωναθαν εις ιερουσαλημ
