1 Maccabees 11

1 Then the king of Egypt gathered great forces, like the sand by the seashore, and many ships; and he tried to get possession of Alexander's kingdom by trickery and add it to his own kingdom.	1 In quel tempo lo re d' Egitto (cioè lo re Tolomeo) radunò grande oste e grande navilio; e cercava di occupare lo reame di Alessandro per inganno, e aggiugnerlo col suo reame.
2 He set out for Syria with peaceable words, and the people of the cities opened their gates to him and went to meet him, for Alexander the king had commanded them to meet him, since he was Alexander's * father-in-law.	2 E venne in Soria con parole di pace, e le cittadi gli aprirono le porte, e vennergli incontro; e questo facevano, però che lo re Alessandro avea mandato loro comandando, che gli venissono incontro, però ch' egli era suo suocero.
3 But when Ptolemy entered the cities he stationed forces as a garrison in each city.	3 E si tosto come egli era entrato nelle cittadi, sì vi poneva guardie di cavalieri in ciascuna.
4 When he * approached Azotus, they showed him the temple of Dagon burned down, and Azotus and its suburbs destroyed, and the corpses lying about, and the charred bodies of those whom Jonathan * had burned in the war, for they had piled them in heaps along his route.	4 E quando egli s' appressoe ad Azoto, sì gli mostrarono il tempio di Dagon arso, e Azoto e gli suoi campi sconfitti, e li corpi gittati, e le sepolture di quegli ch' erano stati tagliati nella battaglia, le quali erano state fatte a lato alla via.
5 They also told the king what Jonathan had done, to throw blame on him; but the king kept silent.	5 E dissono al re, che queste cose avea fatto Ionata, per metterglielo in odio; ma lo re non disse alcuna cosa.
6 Jonathan met the king at Joppa with pomp, and they greeted one another and spent the night there.	6 E incontanente venne Ionata incontro allo re in Ioppen con grande gloria; e salutaronsi insieme, e dormirono quivi.
7 And Jonathan went with the king as far as the river called Eleutherus; then he returned to Jerusalem.	7 E andonne Ionata con lo re infino al fiume che si chiama Eleutero; e poi si tornò in Ierusalem.
8 So King Ptolemy gained control of the coastal cities as far as Seleucia by the sea, and he kept devising evil designs against Alexander.	8 Ma lo re Tolomeo acquistò la signoria delle cittadi infino a Seleucia (città) marittima; e pensava contro ad Alessandro mali consigli.
9 He sent envoys to Demetrius the king, saying, "Come, let us make a covenant with each other, and I will give you in marriage my daughter who was Alexander's wife, and you shall reign over your father's kingdom.	9 E mandoe ambasciatori a Demetrio, dicendo: vieni a me, e facciamo patti insieme, e darotti la mia figliuola per moglie, la quale hae Alessandro, e regnerai nel reame del tuo padre.
10 For I now regret that I gave him my daughter, for he has tried to kill me."	10 E veramente io mi pento, che io gliele diedi mai la mia figliuola; imperciò ch' egli mi volle uccidere.
11 He threw blame on Alexander * because he coveted his kingdom.	11 E in questo modo l'abbominoe, però ch' egli desiderava il suo reame.
12 So he took his daughter away from him and gave her to Demetrius. He was estranged from Alexander, and their enmity became manifest.	12 E tolsegli la sua figliuola, e diedela a Demetrio, e straniossi da Alessandro; e allora furono manifeste le sue nimistadi.
13 Then Ptolemy entered Antioch and put on the crown of Asia. Thus he put two crowns upon his head, the crown of Egypt and that of Asia.	13 E poi (per forza) entroe Tolomeo in Antiochia, e puosesi in capo due corone, ciò furono del regno d' Egitto, e d' Asia.
14 Now Alexander the king was in Cilicia at that time, because the people of that region were in revolt.	14 (In quello tempo) Alessandro era in quello tempo in Cilicia; però che quelli ch' erano in quelli luoghi si erano ribellati.
15 And Alexander heard of it and came against him in battle. Ptolemy marched out and met him with a strong force, and put him to flight.	15 E quando lo re Alessandro il seppe, gli venne incontro a battaglia; di che Tolomeo (sappiendolo) dirizzò la sua oste contro a lui a battaglia, e fugli dinanzi, e per la sua grande potenza lo sconfisse, e cacciò Alessandro.
16 So Alexander fled into Arabia to find protection there, and King Ptolemy was exalted.	16 Ed egli se ne fuggì in Arabia, credendo ivi essere securo; e per questa vittoria fue molto innalzato Tolomeo.
17 And Zabdiel the Arab cut off the head of Alexander and sent it to Ptolemy.	17 Per la qual cosa Zabdiel, uno di Arabia, (credendosi piacere al re Tolomeo) fece prendere il re Alessandro, e fecegli tagliare la testa, e mandolla a Tolomeo.
18 But King Ptolemy died three days later, and his troops in the strongholds were killed by the inhabitants of the strongholds.	18 (Onde egli se n' allegrò, ma poco gli durò la letizia, però che) al terzo di esso Tolomeo si morì; e quelli che erano per le fortezze (del re Alessandro) furono morti da quegli dell' oste.
19 So Demetrius became king in the one hundred and sixty-seventh year. *	19 Ora avvenne che Demetrio venne a regnare nel CLXVII anno (del regno de' Greci).
20 In those days Jonathan assembled the men of Judea to attack the citadel in Jerusalem, and he built many engines of war to use against it.	20 In quelli giorni Ionata radunoe la sua gente ch' era in Giudea, per combattere quegli ch' erano nella rocca di Ierusalem; e fecevi molti ingegni.
21 But certain lawless men who hated their nation went to the king and reported to him that Jonathan was besieging the citadel.	21 Per la qual cosa alquanti rei uomini, che aveano in odio (lui e) la sua gente, si se n' andarono al re, e dissongli che Ionata assediava la ròcca.
22 When he heard this he was angry, and as soon as he heard it he set out and came to Ptolemais; and he wrote Jonathan not to continue the siege, but to meet him for a conference at Ptolemais as quickly as possible.	22 E quando lo re gl' intese, s' adiroe; e venne a Tolemaida, e scrisse a Ionata che non assediasse la ròcca, ma di fatto li venisse incontro a parlamento.
23 When Jonathan heard this, he gave orders to continue the siege; and he chose some of the elders of Israel and some of the priests, and put himself in danger,	23 E quando Ionata intese questo, comandò pure che si assediasse la rocca; ed elesse uomini de' più maturi d' Israel e de' sacerdoti, e dispuosesi al pericolo.
24 for he went to the king at Ptolemais, taking silver and gold and clothing and numerous other gifts. And he won his favor.	24 E procacciò di avere seco oro e ariento e vesti e molti altri presenti, e andossene allo re in Tolemaida, e trovò grazia inanzi di lui.
25 Although certain lawless men of his nation kept making complaints against him,	25 E alquanti rei della sua gente lo accusavano.
26 the king treated him as his predecessors had treated him; he exalted him in the presence of all his friends.	26 Ma lo re sì gli fece come gli aveano fatto gli altri ch' erano stati inanzi a lui; e alzollo dinanzi alla faccia di tutti i suoi amici.
27 He confirmed him in the high priesthood and in as many other honors as he had formerly had, and made him to be regarded as one of his chief friends.	27 E concedettegli la signoria del sacerdozio, e confermogli tutte l' altre preziose cose che avea avuto inanzi, e fecelo principe degli amici suoi.
28 Then Jonathan asked the king to free Judea and the three districts of Samaria * from tribute, and promised him three hundred talents.	28 E Ionata chiese al re, ch' egli facesse franca e libera [la] Giudea, e le tre cittadi, cioè Samaria e li suoi confini; e promisegli CCC talenti.
29 The king consented, and wrote a letter to Jonathan about all these things; its contents were as follows:	29 E lo re il consentì, e fecegli lettere a Ionata di tutte queste cose; le quali contenevano queste parole:
30 "King Demetrius to Jonathan his brother and to the nation of the Jews, greeting.	30 Lo re Demetrio a Ionata fratello salute, e alla gente Giudea.
31 This copy of the letter which we wrote concerning you to Lasthenes our kinsman we have written to you also, so that you may know what it says.	31 Lo esemplo della lettera, la quale mandiamo a Lasteno nostro parente, mandiamo a voi, acciò che sappiate (che lo re Demetrio mandò, dicendo):
32 'King Demetrius to Lasthenes his father, greeting.	32 Il re Demetrio a Lasteno parente (nostro) salute.
33 To the nation of the Jews, who are our friends and fulfil their obligations to us, we have determined to do good, because of the good will they show toward us.	33 Alla gente Giudea, amici nostri, e a quelli che servano le cose che giuste sono appo noi, abbiamo ordinato di fare loro molto bene, per la benignità loro ch' egli hanno verso di noi.
34 We have confirmed as their possession both the territory of Judea and the three districts of Aphairema and Lydda and Rathamin; the latter, with all the region bordering them, were added to Judea from Samaria. To all those who offer sacrifice in Jerusalem, we have granted release from * the royal taxes which the king formerly received from them each year, from the crops of the land and the fruit of the trees.	34 E perciò (facciamo manifesto che noi) concediamo loro tutti i confini di Giudea, e le tre cittadi le quali sono aggiunte alla (provincia di) Giudea, cioè Lida e Ramata (le quali sono appo Giuda) e Samaria, e tutti i loro confini; e sieno sequestrate (e assegnate) a tutti quelli che fanno sacrificio in Ierusalem, per quelle cose che lo re toglieva da loro ciascuno anno, per gli frutti della terra e delle poma.
35 And the other payments henceforth due to us of the tithes, and the taxes due to us, and the salt pits and the crown taxes due to us -- from all these we shall grant them release.	35 E sì rilasciamo loro (da quinci inanzi e poi) tutte l'altre cose che si appartengono a noi di decime e di tributi, e doniamo loro l' aree delle saline, e le corone che a noi si portavano.
36 And not one of these grants shall be canceled from this time forth for ever.	36 .....; di tutte queste cose alcuna non ne sia cassa da quinci inanzi per ogni tempo.
37 Now therefore take care to make a copy of this, and let it be given to Jonathan and put up in a conspicuous place on the holy mountain.'"	37 E però studiatevi incontanente d'assemplare queste cose, e lo esemplo sia dato a Ionata, e sia posto nel monte santo in luogo onorevole.
38 Now when Demetrius the king saw that the land was quiet before him and that there was no opposition to him, he dismissed all his troops, each man to his own place, except the foreign troops which he had recruited from the islands of the nations. So all the troops who had served his fathers hated him.	38 E poi quando Demetrio vidde tutta la sua terra in pace e senza guerra, diede commiato a tutta la sua oste, e volle che ciascuno si ritornasse a casa sua, salvo che l'oste de' forestieri i quali egli avea fatti venire dalle isole; onde avvenne che diventarono suoi nimici tutti quegli dell' oste de' suoi padri.
39 Now Trypho had formerly been one of Alexander's supporters. He saw that all the troops were murmuring against Demetrius. So he went to Imalkue the Arab, who was bringing up Antiochus, the young son of Alexander,	39 Trifone (fu uno barone del re Demetrio, il quale) era stato prima principe delle parti dello re Alessandro; il quale veggendo che tutta l'oste mormorava contro a Demetrio, sì se n' andò ad Emalcuel Arabo, il quale nutricava Antioco figliuolo del re Alessandro.
40 and insistently urged him to hand Antiochus * over to him, to become king in place of his father. He also reported to Imalkue * what Demetrius had done and told of the hatred which the troops of Demetrius * had for him; and he stayed there many days.	40 E lusingavalo ch' egli lo raccomandasse a lui, acciò che lo facesse re in luogo di (Alessandro) suo padre, dicendogli le molte cose (sconce) che Demetrio avea fatte, e come tutta la sua oste gli portava grande odio. E così quivi dimorò (Trifone) più tempo.
41 Now Jonathan sent to Demetrius the king the request that he remove the troops of the citadel from Jerusalem, and the troops in the strongholds; for they kept fighting against Israel.	41 E (in quel tempo e in quella stagione) mandò Ionata allo re Demetrio, pregando ch' egli facesse partire quegli ch' erano nella rocca di Ierusalem, e quegli ch' erano nelle fortezze (in diversi luoghi della Giudea), i quali ingiuriavano la gente de' Giudei.
42 And Demetrius sent this message to Jonathan, "Not only will I do these things for you and your nation, but I will confer great honor on you and your nation, if I find an opportunity.	42 E Demetrio gli mandò rispondendo: io non ti concederò pure questo, ma io te alluminerò di gloria e la tua gente, quando sia luogo e tempo.
43 Now then you will do well to send me men who will help me, for all my troops have revolted."	43 E però molto mi compiacerai, se tu ora mi manderai in aiuto della tua gente, per ciò che tutta la mia oste m' hae abbandonato.
44 So Jonathan sent three thousand stalwart men to him at Antioch, and when they came to the king, the king rejoiced at their arrival.	44 Allora Ionata gli mandò in Antiochia tre milia fortissimi uomini; dello quale avvenimento di questi uomini molto se n' allegroe il re.
45 Then the men of the city assembled within the city, to the number of a hundred and twenty thousand, and they wanted to kill the king.	45 Ora avvenne che si radunarono insieme CXX milia uomini, ch' erano nella cittade, e volevano uccidere il re.
46 But the king fled into the palace. Then the men of the city seized the main streets of the city and began to fight.	46 Ma lo re si fuggì nel palagio; e allora quelli della città presono le vie della terra, e incominciarono a combattere (là dove lo re era).
47 So the king called the Jews to his aid, and they all rallied about him and then spread out through the city; and they killed on that day as many as a hundred thousand men.	47 Di che lo re fece venire (sua gente e) gli Giudei ( ch' erano venuti) in suo aiuto, [e] tutti furono con lui, e corsono la terra.
48 They set fire to the city and seized much spoil on that day, and they saved the king.	48 E in quel dì uccisono C milia uomini, e misono fuoco nella città, e guadagnarono grandi ricchezze in quel dì, e liberarono il re.
49 When the men of the city saw that the Jews had gained control of the city as they pleased, their courage failed and they cried out to the king with this entreaty,	49 E quando l'avanzo di quegli della terra ( ch' erano rimasi in vita) viddono che gli Giudei aveano vinta la cittade, furono molto isgomentati nella mente loro, e andarono allo re, gridando (misericordia),
50 "Grant us peace, and make the Jews stop fighting against us and our city."	50 e umilmente pregando, che perdonasse loro, e che facesse rimanere li Giudei di distruggere loro e la cittade.
51 And they threw down their arms and made peace. So the Jews gained glory in the eyes of the king and of all the people in his kingdom, and they returned to Jerusalem with much spoil.	51 E gittarono le loro armi, e così feciono pace (collo re); e furono gloriosi li Giudei dinanzi allo re, e dinanzi a quegli ch' erano nel suo reame, e acquistarono (glorioso onore e) grande nome per tutto il reame; e poi si ritornarono in Ierusalem con molte ricchezze.
52 So Demetrius the king sat on the throne of his kingdom, and the land was quiet before him.	52 E così sedette in pace lo re Demetrio nella sedia del suo regno; e tutto il suo paese il temeva.
53 But he broke his word about all that he had promised; and he became estranged from Jonathan and did not repay the favors which Jonathan * had done him, but oppressed him greatly.	53 E dappoi ( ch' egli fu così difeso) non attenne le sue promissioni fatte a Ionata, anzi mentio di ciò che promesso gli avea, e istraniossi molto verso di lui, e non gli retribuì secondo i benefici che fatti gli avea, e (da indi inanzi) forte il tormentava.
54 After this Trypho returned, and with him the young boy Antiochus who began to reign and put on the crown.	54 Fatte queste cose, tornò Trifone con Antioco, fanciullo giovane, insieme con lui nel regno, e puosesi la corona.
55 All the troops that Demetrius had cast off gathered around him, and they fought against Demetrius, * and he fled and was routed.	55 E radunossi con lui tutta l'oste che Demetrio avea dispersa, e combatterono contra a lui; e lo [re] Demetrio si fuggì, e mostrò loro le spalle.
56 And Trypho captured the elephants * and gained control of Antioch.	56 E Trifone prese le (sue) bestie, e acquistoe Antiochia.
57 Then the young Antiochus wrote to Jonathan, saying, "I confirm you in the high priesthood and set you over the four districts and make you one of the friends of the king."	57 E allora Antioco il giovane scrisse a Ionata, e disse io ti concedo il sacerdozio, e fotti signore sopra quattro cittadi, acciò che tu sia degli amici del re.
58 And he sent him gold plate and a table service, and granted him the right to drink from gold cups and dress in purple and wear a gold buckle.	58 E mandogli le vasella dell' oro (e dell' ariento) al ministerio (che si faceva), e diedegli autoritade di bere in vasi di oro, e di vestirsi di rosato, e di avere fibbia d'oro.
59 Simon his brother he made governor from the Ladder of Tyre to the borders of Egypt.	59 E Simone suo fratello fece duca da' termini di Tiro infino agli confini d' Egitto.
60 Then Jonathan set forth and traveled beyond the river and among the cities, and all the army of Syria gathered to him as allies. When he came to Askalon, the people of the city met him and paid him honor.	60 Allora Ionata uscì fuori (osteggiando), campeggiava le cittadi di là dal fiume; e tutta l'oste di Soria si radunò con lui, e venne ad Ascalona, e vennongli incontro le genti della cittade onorevolmente.
61 From there he departed to Gaza, but the men of Gaza shut him out. So he beseiged it and burned its suburbs with fire and plundered them.	61 E quindi se ne venne a Gaza; e assediolla, però che quelli che v' erano dentro gli chiusono le porte; ed egli mise fuoco alle case dintorno alla città, e rubolle.
62 Then the people of Gaza pleaded with Jonathan, and he made peace with them, and took the sons of their rulers as hostages and sent them to Jerusalem. And he passed through the country as far as Damascus.	62 Donde allora pregarono quegli di Gaza, Ionata di volere fare pace con loro; donde egli fece con loro concordia, e prese de' loro figliuoli per ostaggi, e mandogli in Ierusalem; e campeggiò per tutto il paese insino a Damasco.
63 Then Jonathan heard that the officers of Demetrius had come to Kadesh in Galilee with a large army, intending to remove him from office.	63 E intese Ionata, che li principi di Demetrio erano trapassati in Cades, la quale era in Galilea, con grande oste, e volevanlo rimuovere dall' officio del reame.
64 He went to meet them, but left his brother Simon in the country.	64 E (incontanente) si fece loro incontro; e lasciò Simone suo fratello a guardia della provincia.
65 Simon encamped before Beth-zur and fought against it for many days and hemmed it in.	65 E Simone puose campo a Betsura, e combattella molti dì,
66 Then they asked him to grant them terms of peace, and he did so. He removed them from there, took possession of the city, and set a garrison over it.	66 Di che loro domandarono accordo, ed ello lo concede loro; e cacciogli poi quindi, e prese la città, e fornilla.
67 Jonathan and his army encamped by the waters of Gennesaret. Early in the morning they marched to the plain of Hazor,	67 Ma Ionata e la sua gente puosono campo all' acqua di Genesar; e poi si partirono inanzi dì. E inanzi che loro fossono nel campo d' Asor,
68 and behold, the army of the foreigners met him in the plain; they had set an ambush against him in the mountains, but they themselves met him face to face.	68 aprarvono loro incontro l'oste degli stranieri, e aveangli posti agguati ne' monti; ma egli sopravenne dal traverso.
69 Then the men in ambush emerged from their places and joined battle.	69 E lo agguato uscì fuori, e combatterono.
70 All the men with Jonathan fled; not one of them was left except Mattathias the son of Absalom and Judas the son of Chalphi, commanders of the forces of the army.	70 E tutti quegli ch' erano con Ionata fuggirono, e non rimase con lui alcuno de' suoi, se non Matatia figliuolo di Assolomi, e Giuda figliuolo di Calfi, principe della cavalleria dell' oste.
71 Jonathan rent his garments and put dust on his head, and prayed.	71 Allora Ionata straccioe le sue vestimenta, e puosesi la terra in capo, e adorò a Dio.
72 Then he turned back to the battle against the enemy * and routed them, and they fled.	72 E poi si ritornò alli nimici nella battaglia, e fecegli rivolgere in dietro (i quali già se n'andavano come vincitori), e combatterono.
73 When his men who were fleeing saw this, they returned to him and joined him in the pursuit as far as Kadesh, to their camp, and there they encamped.	73 E quando quegli dalla sua parte, i quali fuggivano, rivolgendosi il videro (combattere valentemente), si ritornarono a lui, e andarono con lui cacciando li nimici insino a Cades al campo loro, venendone infino quivi.
74 As many as three thousand of the foreigners fell that day. And Jonathan returned to Jerusalem.	74 E furono morti de' forestieri (pagani) in quel di nel torno di tremilia uomini; e poi si ritornò Ionata in Ierusalem.
