1 On that day King Ahasuerus gave to Queen Esther the house of Haman, the enemy of the Jews. And Mordecai came before the king, for Esther had told what he was to her;	1 Le même jour, le roi Assuérus donna à la reine Esther la maison d'Aman, ennemi des Juifs, et Mardochée fut présenté au roi. Car Esther lui avait avoué qu'il était son oncle.
2 and the king took off his signet ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it to Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.	2 Et le roi ôta son anneau, qu'il avait fait reprendre à Aman, et le donna à Mardochée. Esther, de son côté, fit Mardochée intendant de sa maison.
3 Then Esther spoke again to the king; she fell at his feet and besought him with tears to avert the evil design of Haman the Agagite and the plot which he had devised against the Jews.	3 Et non contente de cela, elle se jeta aux pieds du roi, et le conjura avec larmes d'arrêter les effets de la malice d'Aman l'Agagite, et de ses machinations odieuses qu'il avait ourdies contre les Juifs.
4 And the king held out the golden scepter to Esther,	4 Et le roi lui tendit de sa main son sceptre d'or, pour lui donner, selon la coutume, son signe de clémence. Et elle, se levant, se tint devant lui
5 and Esther rose and stood before the king. And she said, "If it please the king, and if I have found favor in his sight, and if the thing seem right before the king, and I be pleasing in his eyes, let an order be written to revoke the letters devised by Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, which he wrote to destroy the Jews who are in all the provinces of the king.	5 et dit : S'il plaît au roi, et si j'ai trouvé grâce devant ses yeux, et si ma prière ne lui paraît pas inconvenante, je le conjure de révoquer par de nouvelles lettres les anciennes lettres d'Aman, persécuteur et ennemi des Juifs, par lesquelles il avait ordonné de les faire périr dans toutes les provinces du roi.
6 For how can I endure to see the calamity that is coming to my people? Or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?"	6 Car comment pourrais-je souffrir la mort et le carnage de mon peuple?
7 Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, "Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and they have hanged him on the gallows, because he would lay hands on the Jews.	7 Et le roi Assuérus répondit à la reine Esther et au Juif Mardochée : J'ai donné à Esther la maison d'Aman, et je l'ai fait attacher lui-même à une croix, parce qu'il avait osé porter la main sur les Juifs.
8 And you may write as you please with regard to the Jews, in the name of the king, and seal it with the king's ring; for an edict written in the name of the king and sealed with the king's ring cannot be revoked."	8 Ecrivez donc aux Juifs comme il vous plaira, au nom du roi, et scellez les lettres de mon anneau. Car c'était la coutume que nul n'osait s'opposer aux lettres qui étaient envoyées au nom du roi, et scellées de son anneau.
9 The king's secretaries were summoned at that time, in the third month, which is the month of Sivan, on the twenty-third day; and an edict was written according to all that Mordecai commanded concerning the Jews to the satraps and the governors and the princes of the provinces from India to Ethiopia, a hundred and twenty-seven provinces, to every province in its own script and to every people in its own language, and also to the Jews in their script and their language.	9 On fit donc venir les scribes et les écrivains du roi (c'était alors le troisième mois, appel siban); le vingt-troisiême jour de ce même mois les lettres furent écrites, comme Mardochée le voulut, aux Juifs, aux princes, aux gouverneurs et aux juges qui commandaient aux cent vingt-sept provinces du royaume, depuis les Indes jusqu'en Ethiopie; à chaque province et à chaque peuple dans sa langue et dans son écriture, et aux Juifs, afin qu'ils pussent lire et comprendre.
10 The writing was in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed with the king's ring, and letters were sent by mounted couriers riding on swift horses that were used in the king's service, bred from the royal stud.	10 Ces lettres, qui étaient envoyées au nom du roi, furent scellées de son anneau et expédiées par les couriers, afin que, parcourant toutes les provinces, ils prévinssent les anciennes lettres par ces nouveaux messages.
11 By these the king allowed the Jews who were in every city to gather and defend their lives, to destroy, to slay, and to annihilate any armed force of any people or province that might attack them, with their children and women, and to plunder their goods,	11 Le roi leur ordonna d'aller trouver les Juifs en chaque ville, et de leur prescrire de s'assembler pour défendre leur vie, et pour tuer et exterminer tous leurs ennemis, avec leurs femmes, leurs enfants et toutes leurs maisons, et pour piller leurs dépouilles.
12 upon one day throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar.	12 Et dans toutes les provinces un même jour fut fixé pour la vengeance, savoir le treizième jour du douzième mois, appelé adar.
13 A copy of what was written was to be issued as a decree in every province, and by proclamation to all peoples, and the Jews were to be ready on that day to avenge themselves upon their enemies.	13 La substance de cette lettre était qu'on fît savoir, dans toutes les provinces et aux peuples qui étaient soumis à l'empire du roi Assuérus, que les Juifs étaient prêts à se venger de leurs ennemis.
14 So the couriers, mounted on their swift horses that were used in the king's service, rode out in haste, urged by the king's command; and the decree was issued in Susa the capital.	14 Et les courriers partirent en grande hâte, portant la nouvelle, et l'édit fut affiché dans Suse.
15 Then Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal robes of blue and white, with a great golden crown and a mantle of fine linen and purple, while the city of Susa shouted and rejoiced.	15 Et Mardochée, sortant du palais et de la présence du roi, parut avec éclat, dans ses vêtements royaux de couleur d'hyacinthe et de blanc, portant une couronne d'or sur la tête, et couvert d'un manteau de soie et de pourpre. Et toute la ville fut transportée d'allégresse et de joie.
16 The Jews had light and gladness and joy and honor.	16 Et sur les Juifs sembla se lever une nouvelle lumière, la joie, l'honneur et les transports.
17 And in every province and in every city, wherever the king's command and his edict came, there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a feast and a holiday. And many from the peoples of the country declared themselves Jews, for the fear of the Jews had fallen upon them.	17 Parmi toutes les nations, dans les villes et les provinces où l'ordonnance du roi était portée, il y avait une joie extraordinaire, des banquets, des festins et des jours de fêtes; à ce point que plusieurs des autres nations, et d'autres cultes, embrassèrent leur religion et leurs cérémonies. Car une grande terreur du nom juif s'était répandue sur tous.
