Now when it was reported to Sanballat and Tobiah and to Geshem the Arab and to the rest of our enemies that I had built the wall and that there was no breach left in it (although up to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates),1 ܗܝܕܝܢ ܟܕ ܐܫܬܡܥܬ ܡܠܬܐ ܠܣܡܒܠܝܛ ܘܠܛܘܒܝܐ ܘܠܓܫܘܡ ܥܪܒܝܐ ܘܠܫܪܟܐ ܕܒܥ̈ܠܕܒܒܝܢ ܕܒܢܝܢܝܗܝ ܠܫܘܪܐ ܘܠܐ ܒܗ ܬܘܪܥܬܐ ܘܥܕܡܐ ܠܗ ܠܙܒܢܐ ܗ̇ܘ ܦܪ̈ܘܣܬܕܐ ܕܬܪ̈ܥܐ ܥܕܟܝܠ ܠܐ ܐܩܝܡܝܢ
Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, "Come and let us meet together in one of the villages in the plain of Ono." But they intended to do me harm.2 ܘܫܕܪܘ ܠܘܬܝ ܣܡܒܠܝܛ ܘܓܫܘܡ ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܠܝ ܬܐ ܢܐܙܠ ܐܟܚܕܐ ܘܢܫܪܐ ܐܝܟ ܓܝܣܐ ܒܦܩܥܬܐ ܕܐܝܢܘ ܘܗ̣ܢܘܢ ܡܬܪܥܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܠܡܥܒܕ ܠܝ ܒܝܫܬܐ
And I sent messengers to them, saying, "I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?"3 ܘܫ̇ܕܪܬ ܠܘܬܗܘܢ ܡܠܐܟܐ ܘܐܡ̇ܪܬ ܠܗܘܢ ܥ̇ܒܕܐ ܪܒܐ ܥ̇ܒܕ ܐܢܐ ܘܠܐ ܡܫܟܚ ܐܢܐ ܠܡܚܬ ܕܠܡܐ ܢܒܛܠ ܟܕ ܐܪܦܐ ܘܐܚܘܬ ܠܘܬܟܘܢ
And they sent to me four times in this way and I answered them in the same manner.4
In the same way Sanballat for the fifth time sent his servant to me with an open letter in his hand.5
In it was written, "It is reported among the nations, and Geshem also says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel; that is why you are building the wall; and you wish to become their king, according to this report.6 ܘܟܬܝܒ ܒܗ̇ ܒܥܡܡ̈ܐ ܐܫܬܡܥ ܘܓܫܘܡ ܐܡ̇ܪ ܐܢܬ ܘܝܗܘ̈ܕܝܐ ܡܬܪܥܝܢ ܠܡܡܪܕ ܡܛܠ ܗܢܐ ܐܢܬ ܒ̇ܢܐ ܫܘܪܐ ܘܐܢܬ ܗ̇ܘܐ ܠܗܘܢ ܡܠܟܐ ܐܝܟ ܦܬܓܡ̈ܐ ܗܠܝܢ
And you have also set up prophets to proclaim concerning you in Jerusalem, 'There is a king in Judah.' And now it will be reported to the king according to these words. So now come, and let us take counsel together."7 ܐܦ ܢܒܝ̈ܐ ܐܩܝܡܬ ܠܡܬܢܒܝܘ ܥܠܝܟ ܒܐܘܪܫܠܡ ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܕܗܐ ܐܡܠܟ ܥܙܪܐ ܒܝܗܘܕ ܘܡܟܝܠ ܐܫܬܡܥ ܠܡ̇ܠܟܐ ܐܝܟ ܡ̈ܠܐ ܗܠܝܢ ܡܟܝܠ ܬܘ ܢܬܡܠܟ ܐܟܚܕܐ
Then I sent to him, saying, "No such things as you say have been done, for you are inventing them out of your own mind."8 ܘܫ̇ܕܪܬ ܠܘܬܗ ܘܐܡ̇ܪܬ ܠܗ ܠܐ ܫܦܝܪ ܕܢܗ̈ܘܝܢ ܐܝܟ ܡ̈ܠܐ ܗܠܝܢ ܕܐܢܬ ܐܡ̇ܪ ܡܛܠ ܕܡܢ ܠܒܟ ܐܢܬ ܐܡ̇ܪ ܠܗܝܢ
For they all wanted to frighten us, thinking, "Their hands will drop from the work, and it will not be done." But now, O God, strengthen thou my hands.9 ܡܛܠ ܕܟܘܠܗܘܢ ܡܕܚܠܝܢ ܠܢ ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܡܬܪ̈ܦܝܢ ܐܝܕܝ̈ܗܘܢ ܡܢ ܥܒܝܕܬܐ ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܠܢ ܕܠܐ ܬܥܒܕܘܢ ܡܟܝܠ ܐܥܫܢ ܐܝ̈ܕܝ
Now when I went into the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was shut up, he said, "Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us close the doors of the temple; for they are coming to kill you, at night they are coming to kill you."10 ܘܐܢܐ ܥ̇ܠܬ ܠܒܝܬ ܫܡܥܝܐ ܒܪ ܕܠܝܐ ܒܪ ܡܗܛܒܐܝܠ ܘܗܘ ܟ̇ܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܘܐܡ̣ܪ ܠܝ ܬܐ ܢܬܘܥܕ ܠܒܝܬܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܠܓܘ ܗܝܟܠܐ ܘܢܐܚܘܕ ܬܪ̈ܥܐ ܕܗܝܟܠܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܐܬܝܢ ܠܡܩܛܠܟ ܘܒܠܠܝܐ ܐܬܝܢ ܠܡܩܛܠܟ
But I said, "Should such a man as I flee? And what man such as I could go into the temple and live? I will not go in."11 ܘܐܡ̇ܪܬ ܓܒܪܐ ܕܐܟܘܬܝ ܢܥܪܘܩ ܚܣ ܠܝ ܕܐܥܪܘܩ ܘܐܥܘܠ ܠܗܝܟܠܐ
And I understood, and saw that God had not sent him, but he had pronounced the prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.12 ܚ̇ܟܡ ܐܢܐ ܕܝܢ ܕܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܐܠܗܐ ܫܕܪܗ ܥܠܝ ܘܐܦܠܐ ܒܝܕ ܢܒܝܐ ܐܬܐܡܪ ܠܝ ܕܩ̇ܛܠ ܠܝ ܛܘܒܝܐ ܘܣܡܒܠܝܛ ܘܚܒܪ̈ܘܗܝ ܐܓܪܘ ܘܫܕܪܘܗܝ ܥܠܝ ܠܡܩܛܠܢܝ
For this purpose he was hired, that I should be afraid and act in this way and sin, and so they could give me an evil name, in order to taunt me.13 ܡܛܠ ܕܐܓܝܪܐ ܗܘ ܡܛܠ ܕܐܕܚܠ ܘܐܥ̇ܒܕ ܗܟܢܐ ܘܐܚ̇ܛܐ ܘܐܗ̇ܘܐ ܠܗܘܢ ܠܫܡܐ ܒܝܫܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܢܚܣܕܘܢܢܝ
Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, O my God, according to these things that they did, and also the prophetess No-adiah and the rest of the prophets who wanted to make me afraid.14 ܐܬܕܟܪ ܐܠܗܝ ܠܛܘܒܝܐ ܘܠܣܡܒܠܝܛ ܘܠܚܒܪ̈ܘܗܝ ܐܝܟ ܥ̇ܒ̈ܕܝܗܘܢ ܗܠܝܢ ܣܢܝ̈ܐ ܐܦ ܠܝܘܕܥܝܐ ܢܒܝܐ ܐܦ ܠܫܪܟܐ ܕܢܒܝ̈ܐ ܕܗܘܘ ܡܕܚܠܝܢ ܠܝ ܡܢܗܘܢ
So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days.15
And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations round about us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem; for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.16 ܗܝܕܝܢ ܟܕ ܫܡܥܘ ܟܠܗܘܢ ܒܥ̈ܠܕܒܒܝܢ ܕܚܠܘ ܟܘܠܗܘܢ ܥܡܡ̈ܐ ܕܚܕܪܝܢ ܘܙܥܘ ܛܒ ܡܢ ܩܕܡܝܢ ܘܝܕܥܘ ܕܡܢ ܩܕܡ ܐܠܗܐ ܐܬܥܒܕܬ ܥܒܝܕܬܐ ܗܕܐ
Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah's letters came to them.17 ܐܦ ܒܝܘܡ̈ܬܐ ܗ̇ܢܘܢ ܡܣܓܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܪ̈ܘܪܒܢܐ ܕܝܗܘ̈ܕܝܐ ܐܓܪ̈ܬܗܘܢ ܘܐܙ̈ܠܢ ܗܘ̈ܝ ܠܘܬ ܛܘܒܝܐ ܘܐܓܪ̈ܬܗ ܕܛܘܒܝܐ ܐܬܝ̈ܢ ܗܘ̈ܝ ܠܘܬܗܘܢ
For many in Judah were bound by oath to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah: and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah as his wife.18 ܡܛܠ ܕܣܓܝܐ̈ܐ ܗܘܘ ܒܝܗܘܕ ܐܢܫܐ ܕܝܡܘ ܠܗ ܕܠܐ ܢܗܪܘܢܗ ܡܛܠ ܕܚܬܢܐ ܗܘܐ ܕܫܟܢܝܐ ܒܪ ܐܪܚ ܘܝܘܚܢܢ ܒܪܗ ܢ̣ܣܒ ܠܒܪܬ ܡܫܠܘܡ ܒܪ ܒܪܟܝܐ
Also they spoke of his good deeds in my presence, and reported my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to make me afraid.19 ܐܦ ܡ̈ܠܘܗܝ ܛܒ̈ܬܐ ܐܡܪܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܩܕܡܝ ܘܡܠܬܐ ܕܐܡ̇ܪ ܗ̇ܘܝܬ ܐܡܪܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܠܗ ܘܐܓܪ̈ܬܐ ܡܫܕܪ ܗܘܐ ܗܘ ܛܘܒܝܐ ܠܡܕܚܠܘܬܢܝ
