Nehemiah 6

1 Now when it was reported to Sanballat and Tobiah and to Geshem the Arab and to the rest of our enemies that I had built the wall and that there was no breach left in it (although up to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates),	1 Alors Sanaballat, Tobie, Gossem l'Arabe et nos autres ennemis apprirent que j'avais rebâti la muraille, et qu'il n'y avait plus aucune brèche, quoique jusqu'alors je n'eusse pas fait mettre les battants aux portes.
2 Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, "Come and let us meet together in one of the villages in the plain of Ono." But they intended to do me harm.	2 Et Sanaballat et Gossem m'envoyèrent dire : Venez, afin que nous fassions alliance avec vous en quelque village, dans la vallée d'Ono. Mais leur dessein était de me faire du mal.
3 And I sent messengers to them, saying, "I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?"	3 Je leur envoyai des messagers, et leur fis dire : Je travaille à un grand ouvrage, et je ne puis descendre, de peur qu'il ne soit négligé pendant mon absence, lorsque je serai allé près de vous.
4 And they sent to me four times in this way and I answered them in the same manner.	4 Ils me renvoyèrent dire la même chose par quatre fois, et je leur fis la même réponse.
5 In the same way Sanballat for the fifth time sent his servant to me with an open letter in his hand.	5 Sanaballat m'envoya ce message une cinquième fois par un de ses serviteurs, qui tenait à la main une lettre écrite en ces termes:
6 In it was written, "It is reported among the nations, and Geshem also says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel; that is why you are building the wall; and you wish to become their king, according to this report.	6 Le bruit court parmi les peuples, et Gossem affirme que vous pensez à vous révolter avec les Juifs, et que c'est dans ce but que vous rebâtissez la muraille, et que vous voulez vous faire roi des Juifs; c'est dans cette même pensée
7 And you have also set up prophets to proclaim concerning you in Jerusalem, 'There is a king in Judah.' And now it will be reported to the king according to these words. So now come, and let us take counsel together."	7 que vous auriez aposté des prophètes, afin qu'ils relèvent votre nom dans Jérusalem, et qu'ils disent : C'est lui qui est le roi de Judée. Or le roi sera informé de ces choses; venez donc avec nous, afin que nous en délibérions ensemble.
8 Then I sent to him, saying, "No such things as you say have been done, for you are inventing them out of your own mind."	8 Je lui envoyai cette réponse : Rien de ce que vous dites là n'est vrai; mais c'est vous qui l'inventez de votre tête.
9 For they all wanted to frighten us, thinking, "Their hands will drop from the work, and it will not be done." But now, O God, strengthen thou my hands.	9 Tous ces gens voulaient nous effrayer, s'imaginant que nous cesserions de bâtir, et que nous quitterions notre travail. Mais je m'y appliquai avec plus de courage encore.
10 Now when I went into the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was shut up, he said, "Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us close the doors of the temple; for they are coming to kill you, at night they are coming to kill you."	10 J'entrai ensuite en secret dans la maison de Sémaïas, fils de Dalaïas, fils de Métabéel, et il me dit : Délibérons ensemble dans la maison de Dieu au milieu du temple, et fermons-en les portes; car ils doivent venir pour vous faire violence, et ils viendront la nuit pour vous tuer.
11 But I said, "Should such a man as I flee? And what man such as I could go into the temple and live? I will not go in."	11 Je répondis : Un homme comme moi prend-il la fuite? Et quel homme tel que moi pourrait entrer dans le temple, et vivre? Je n'irai point.
12 And I understood, and saw that God had not sent him, but he had pronounced the prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.	12 Et je reconnus que ce n'était pas Dieu qui l'avait envoyé, mais qu'il m'avait parlé en feignant d'être prophète, et qu'il avait été gagné par Tobie et par Sanaballat;
13 For this purpose he was hired, that I should be afraid and act in this way and sin, and so they could give me an evil name, in order to taunt me.	13 car il avait été payé par eux pour m'intimider, afin que je tombasse dans le péché, et qu'ils eussent à me faire ce reproche.
14 Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, O my God, according to these things that they did, and also the prophetess No-adiah and the rest of the prophets who wanted to make me afraid.	14 Souvenez-Vous de moi, Seigneur, en considérant toutes ces oeuvres de Tobie et de Sanaballat. Et souvenez-Vous aussi du prophète Noadia, et des autres prophètes qui voulaient m'effrayer.
15 So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days.	15 Cependant la muraille fut achevée le vingt-cinquième jour du mois d'élul, en cinquante-deux jours.
16 And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations round about us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem; for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.	16 Et nos ennemis l'ayant appris, tous les peuples qui étaient autour de nous furent saisis de crainte et consternés au dedans d'eux-mêmes; et ils reconnurent que cette oeuvre venait de Dieu.
17 Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah's letters came to them.	17 Dans ce temps-là quelques Juifs du premier rang envoyaient des lettres nombreuses à Tobie, et Tobie leur en envoyait aussi.
18 For many in Judah were bound by oath to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah: and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah as his wife.	18 Car plusieurs, en Judée, étaient liés à lui par serment, parce qu'il était gendre de Séchénias, fils d'Aréa, et que Johanan son fils avait épousé la fille de Mosollam, fils de Barachias.
19 Also they spoke of his good deeds in my presence, and reported my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to make me afraid.	19 Ils venaient même le louer devant moi, et ils lui rapportaient mes paroles, et Tobie envoyait des lettres pour m'effrayer.
