And responding, Jesus again spoke to them in parables, saying:1 Et respondens Jesus, dixit iterum in parabolis eis, dicens :
“The kingdom of heaven is like a man who was king, who celebrated a wedding for his son.2 Simile factum est regnum cælorum homini regi, qui fecit nuptias filio suo.
And he sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding. But they were not willing to come.3 Et misit servos suos vocare invitatos ad nuptias, et nolebant venire.
Again, he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell the invited: Behold, I have prepared my meal. My bulls and fatlings have been killed, and all is ready. Come to the wedding.’4 Iterum misit alios servos, dicens : Dicite invitatis : Ecce prandium meum paravi, tauri mei et altilia occisa sunt, et omnia parata : venite ad nuptias.
But they ignored this and they went away: one to his country estate, and another to his business.5 Illi autem neglexerunt : et abierunt, alius in villam suam, alius vero ad negotiationem suam :
Yet truly, the rest took hold of his servants and, having treated them with contempt, killed them.6 reliqui vero tenuerunt servos ejus, et contumeliis affectos occiderunt.
But when the king heard this, he was angry. And sending out his armies, he destroyed those murderers, and he burned their city.7 Rex autem cum audisset, iratus est : et missis exercitibus suis, perdidit homicidas illos, et civitatem illorum succendit.
Then he said to his servants: ‘The wedding, indeed, has been prepared. But those who were invited were not worthy.8 Tunc ait servis suis : Nuptiæ quidem paratæ sunt, sed qui invitati erant, non fuerunt digni :
Therefore, go out to the ways, and call whomever you will find to the wedding.’9 ite ergo ad exitus viarum, et quoscumque inveneritis, vocate ad nuptias.
And his servants, departing into the ways, gathered all those whom they found, bad and good, and the wedding was filled with guests.10 Et egressi servi ejus in vias, congregaverunt omnes quos invenerunt, malos et bonos : et impletæ sunt nuptiæ discumbentium.
Then the king entered to see the guests. And he saw a man there who was not clothed in a wedding garment.11 Intravit autem rex ut videret discumbentes, et vidit ibi hominem non vestitum veste nuptiali.
And he said to him, ‘Friend, how is it that you have entered here without having a wedding garment?’ But he was dumbstruck.12 Et ait illi : Amice, quomodo huc intrasti non habens vestem nuptialem ? At ille obmutuit.
Then the king said to the ministers: ‘Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.13 Tunc dicit rex ministris : Ligatis manibus et pedibus ejus, mittite eum in tenebras exteriores : ibi erit fletus et stridor dentium.
For many are called, but few are chosen.’ ”14 Multi enim sunt vocati, pauci vero electi.
Then the Pharisees, going out, took counsel as to how they might entrap him in speech.15 Tunc abeuntes pharisæi, consilium inierunt ut caperent eum in sermone.
And they sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying: “Teacher, we know that you are truthful, and that you teach the way of God in truth, and that the influence of others is nothing to you. For you do not consider the reputation of men.16 Et mittunt ei discipulos suos cum Herodianis, dicentes : Magister, scimus quia verax es, et viam Dei in veritate doces, et non est tibi cura de aliquo : non enim respicis personam hominum :
Therefore, tell us, how does it seem to you? Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar, or not?”17 dic ergo nobis quid tibi videtur, licet censum dare Cæsari, an non ?
But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said: “Why do you test me, you hypocrites?18 Cognita autem Jesus nequitia eorum, ait : Quid me tentatis, hypocritæ ?
Show me the coin of the census tax.” And they offered him a denarius.19 ostendite mihi numisma census. At illi obtulerunt ei denarium.
And Jesus said to them, “Whose image is this, and whose inscription?”20 Et ait illis Jesus : Cujus est imago hæc, et superscriptio ?
They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Then render to Caesar what is of Caesar; and to God what is of God.”21 Dicunt ei : Cæsaris. Tunc ait illis : Reddite ergo quæ sunt Cæsaris, Cæsari : et quæ sunt Dei, Deo.
And hearing this, they wondered. And having left him behind, they went away.22 Et audientes mirati sunt, et relicto eo abierunt.
In that day, the Sadducees, who say there is to be no resurrection, approached him. And they questioned him,23 In illo die accesserunt ad eum sadducæi, qui dicunt non esse resurrectionem : et interrogaverunt eum,
saying: “Teacher, Moses said: If anyone will have died, having no son, his brother shall marry his wife, and he shall raise up offspring to his brother.24 dicentes : Magister, Moyses dixit : Si quis mortuus fuerit non habens filium, ut ducat frater ejus uxorem illius, et suscitet semen fratri suo.
Now there were seven brothers with us. And the first, having taken a wife, died. And having no offspring, he left his wife to his brother:25 Erant autem apud nos septem fratres : et primus, uxore ducta, defunctus est : et non habens semen, reliquit uxorem suam fratri suo.
similarly with the second, and the third, even to the seventh.26 Similiter secundus, et tertius usque ad septimum.
And last of all, the woman also passed away.27 Novissime autem omnium et mulier defuncta est.
In the resurrection, then, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.”28 In resurrectione ergo cujus erit de septem uxor ? omnes enim habuerunt eam.
But Jesus responded to them by saying: “You have gone astray by knowing neither the Scriptures, nor the power of God.29 Respondens autem Jesus, ait illis : Erratis nescientes Scripturas, neque virtutem Dei.
For in the resurrection, they shall neither marry, nor be given in marriage. Instead, they shall be like the Angels of God in heaven.30 In resurrectione enim neque nubent, neque nubentur : sed erunt sicut angeli Dei in cælo.
But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken by God, saying to you:31 De resurrectione autem mortuorum non legistis quod dictum est a Deo dicente vobis :
‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?’ He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”32 Ego sum Deus Abraham, et Deus Isaac, et Deus Jacob ? Non est Deus mortuorum, sed viventium.
And when the crowds heard this, they wondered at his doctrine.33 Et audientes turbæ, mirabantur in doctrina ejus.
But the Pharisees, hearing that he had caused the Sadducees to be silent, came together as one.34 Pharisæi autem audientes quod silentium imposuisset sadducæis, convenerunt in unum :
And one of them, a doctor of the law, questioned him, to test him:35 et interrogavit eum unus ex eis legis doctor, tentans eum :
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”36 Magister, quod est mandatum magnum in lege ?
Jesus said to him: “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God from all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your mind.’37 Ait illi Jesus : Diliges Dominum Deum tuum ex toto corde tuo, et in tota anima tua, et in tota mente tua.
This is the greatest and first commandment.38 Hoc est maximum, et primum mandatum.
But the second is similar to it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’39 Secundum autem simile est huic : Diliges proximum tuum, sicut teipsum.
On these two commandments the entire law depends, and also the prophets.”40 In his duobus mandatis universa lex pendet, et prophetæ.
Then, when the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus questioned them,41 Congregatis autem pharisæis, interrogavit eos Jesus,
saying: “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “David’s.”42 dicens : Quid vobis videtur de Christo ? cujus filius est ? Dicunt ei : David.
He said to them: “Then how can David, in the Spirit, call him Lord, saying:43 Ait illis : Quomodo ergo David in spiritu vocat eum Dominum, dicens :
‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool?’44 Dixit Dominus Domino meo : Sede a dextris meis, donec ponam inimicos tuos scabellum pedum tuorum ?
So then, if David calls him Lord, how can he be his son?”45 Si ergo David vocat eum Dominum, quomodo filius ejus est ?
And no one was able to respond to him a word. And neither did anyone dare, from that day forward, to question him.46 Et nemo poterat ei respondere verbum : neque ausus fuit quisquam ex illa die eum amplius interrogare.
