CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINGREEK BIBLE
And responding, Jesus again spoke to them in parables, saying:1 Και αποκριθεις ο Ιησους παλιν ειπε προς αυτους δια παραβολων, λεγων?
“The kingdom of heaven is like a man who was king, who celebrated a wedding for his son.2 Ωμοιωθη η βασιλεια των ουρανων με ανθρωπον βασιλεα, οστις εκαμε γαμους εις τον υιον αυτου?
And he sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding. But they were not willing to come.3 και απεστειλε τους δουλους αυτου να καλεσωσι τους προσκεκλημενους εις τους γαμους, και δεν ηθελον να ελθωσι.
Again, he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell the invited: Behold, I have prepared my meal. My bulls and fatlings have been killed, and all is ready. Come to the wedding.’4 Παλιν απεστειλεν αλλους δουλους, λεγων?
But they ignored this and they went away: one to his country estate, and another to his business.5 Εκεινοι ομως αμελησαντες απηλθον, ο μεν εις τον αγρον αυτου, ο δε εις το εμποριον αυτου?
Yet truly, the rest took hold of his servants and, having treated them with contempt, killed them.6 οι δε λοιποι πιασαντες τους δουλους αυτου υβρισαν και εφονευσαν.
But when the king heard this, he was angry. And sending out his armies, he destroyed those murderers, and he burned their city.7 Ακουσας δε ο βασιλευς ωργισθη, και πεμψας τα στρατευματα αυτου απωλεσε τους φονεις εκεινους και την πολιν αυτων κατεκαυσε.
Then he said to his servants: ‘The wedding, indeed, has been prepared. But those who were invited were not worthy.8 Τοτε λεγει προς τους δουλους αυτου?
Therefore, go out to the ways, and call whomever you will find to the wedding.’9 υπαγετε λοιπον εις τας διεξοδους των οδων, και οσους αν ευρητε καλεσατε εις τους γαμους.
And his servants, departing into the ways, gathered all those whom they found, bad and good, and the wedding was filled with guests.10 Και εξελθοντες οι δουλοι εκεινοι εις τας οδους, συνηγαγον παντας οσους ευρον, κακους τε και καλους?
Then the king entered to see the guests. And he saw a man there who was not clothed in a wedding garment.11 Εισελθων δε ο βασιλευς δια να θεωρηση τους ανακεκλιμενους, ειδεν εκει ανθρωπον μη ενδεδυμενον ενδυμα γαμου,
And he said to him, ‘Friend, how is it that you have entered here without having a wedding garment?’ But he was dumbstruck.12 και λεγει προς αυτον?
Then the king said to the ministers: ‘Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.13 Τοτε ειπεν ο βασιλευς προς τους υπηρετας?
For many are called, but few are chosen.’
Then the Pharisees, going out, took counsel as to how they might entrap him in speech.15 Τοτε υπηγον οι Φαρισαιοι και συνεβουλευθησαν πως να παγιδευσωσιν αυτον εν λογω.
And they sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying: “Teacher, we know that you are truthful, and that you teach the way of God in truth, and that the influence of others is nothing to you. For you do not consider the reputation of men.16 Και αποστελλουσι προς αυτον τους μαθητας αυτων μετα των Ηρωδιανων, λεγοντες? Διδασκαλε, εξευρομεν οτι αληθης εισαι και την οδον του Θεου εν αληθεια διδασκεις και δεν σε μελει περι ουδενος? διοτι δεν βλεπεις εις προσωπον ανθρωπων?
Therefore, tell us, how does it seem to you? Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar, or not?”17 ειπε λοιπον προς ημας, Τι σοι φαινεται; ειναι συγκεχωρημενον να δωσωμεν δασμον εις τον Καισαρα η ουχι;
But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said: “Why do you test me, you hypocrites?18 Γνωρισας δε ο Ιησους την πονηριαν αυτων, ειπε? Τι με πειραζετε, υποκριται;
Show me the coin of the census tax.” And they offered him a denarius.19 δειξατε μοι το νομισμα του δασμου?
And Jesus said to them, “Whose image is this, and whose inscription?”20 Και λεγει προς αυτους? Τινος ειναι η εικων αυτη και η επιγραφη;
They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Then render to Caesar what is of Caesar; and to God what is of God.”21 Λεγουσι προς αυτον?
And hearing this, they wondered. And having left him behind, they went away.22 Και ακουσαντες εθαυμασαν, και αφησαντες αυτον ανεχωρησαν.
In that day, the Sadducees, who say there is to be no resurrection, approached him. And they questioned him,23 Εν εκεινη τη ημερα προσηλθον προς αυτον Σαδδουκαιοι, οι λεγοντες οτι δεν ειναι αναστασις, και ηρωτησαν αυτον, λεγοντες?
saying: “Teacher, Moses said: If anyone will have died, having no son, his brother shall marry his wife, and he shall raise up offspring to his brother.24 Διδασκαλε, ο Μωυσης ειπεν, Εαν τις αποθανη μη εχων τεκνα, θελει νυμφευθη ο αδελφος αυτου την γυναικα αυτου και θελει αναστησει σπερμα εις τον αδελφον αυτου.
Now there were seven brothers with us. And the first, having taken a wife, died. And having no offspring, he left his wife to his brother:25 Ησαν δε παρ' ημιν επτα αδελφοι?
similarly with the second, and the third, even to the seventh.26 ομοιως και ο δευτερος, και ο τριτος, εως των επτα.
And last of all, the woman also passed away.27 Υστερον δε παντων απεθανε και η γυνη.
In the resurrection, then, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.”28 Εν τη αναστασει λοιπον τινος των επτα θελει εισθαι γυνη; διοτι παντες ελαβον αυτην.
But Jesus responded to them by saying: “You have gone astray by knowing neither the Scriptures, nor the power of God.29 Αποκριθεις δε ο Ιησους, ειπε προς αυτους? Πλανασθε μη γνωριζοντες τας γραφας μηδε την δυναμιν του Θεου.
For in the resurrection, they shall neither marry, nor be given in marriage. Instead, they shall be like the Angels of God in heaven.30 Διοτι εν τη αναστασει ουτε νυμφευονται ουτε νυμφευουσιν, αλλ' ειναι ως αγγελοι του Θεου εν ουρανω.
But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken by God, saying to you:31 Περι δε της αναστασεως των νεκρων δεν ανεγνωσατε το ρηθεν προς εσας υπο του Θεου, λεγοντος?
‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?’ He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”32 Εγω ειμαι ο Θεος του Αβρααμ και ο Θεος του Ισαακ και ο Θεος του Ιακωβ; δεν ειναι ο Θεος νεκρων, αλλα ζωντων.
And when the crowds heard this, they wondered at his doctrine.33 Και ακουσαντες οι οχλοι, εξεπληττοντο δια την διδαχην αυτου.
But the Pharisees, hearing that he had caused the Sadducees to be silent, came together as one.34 Οι δε Φαρισαιοι, ακουσαντες οτι απεστομωσε τους Σαδδουκαιους, συνηχθησαν ομου.
And one of them, a doctor of the law, questioned him, to test him:35 Και εις εξ αυτων, νομικος, ηρωτησε πειραζων αυτον και λεγων?
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”36 Διδασκαλε, ποια εντολη ειναι μεγαλη εν τω νομω;
Jesus said to him: “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God from all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your mind.’37 Και ο Ιησους ειπε προς αυτον? Θελεις αγαπα Κυριον τον Θεον σου εξ ολης της καρδιας σου και εξ ολης της ψυχης σου και εξ ολης της διανοιας σου.
This is the greatest and first commandment.38 Αυτη ειναι πρωτη και μεγαλη εντολη.
But the second is similar to it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’39 Δευτερα δε ομοια αυτης?
On these two commandments the entire law depends, and also the prophets.”40 Εν ταυταις ταις δυο εντολαις ολος ο νομος και οι προφηται κρεμανται.
Then, when the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus questioned them,41 Και ενω ησαν συνηγμενοι οι Φαρισαιοι, ηρωτησεν αυτους ο Ιησους,
saying: “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “David’s.”42 λεγων?
He said to them: “Then how can David, in the Spirit, call him Lord, saying:43 Λεγει προς αυτους? Πως λοιπον ο Δαβιδ δια Πνευματος ονομαζει αυτον Κυριον, λεγων,
‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool?’44 Ειπεν ο Κυριος προς τον Κυριον μου, Καθου εκ δεξιων μου εωσου θεσω τους εχθρους σου υποποδιον των ποδων σου;
So then, if David calls him Lord, how can he be his son?”45 Εαν λοιπον ο Δαβιδ ονομαζη αυτον Κυριον, πως ειναι υιος αυτου;
And no one was able to respond to him a word. And neither did anyone dare, from that day forward, to question him.46 Και ουδεις ηδυνατο να αποκριθη προς αυτον λογον?
