And responding, Jesus again spoke to them in parables, saying:1 Et Jésus se remit à leur parler en paraboles:
“The kingdom of heaven is like a man who was king, who celebrated a wedding for his son.2 "Il en va du Royaume des Cieux comme d'un roi qui fit un festin de noces pour son fils.
And he sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding. But they were not willing to come.3 Il envoya ses serviteurs convier les invités aux noces, mais eux ne voulaient pas venir.
Again, he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell the invited: Behold, I have prepared my meal. My bulls and fatlings have been killed, and all is ready. Come to the wedding.’4 De nouveau il envoya d'autres serviteurs avec ces mots: "Dites aux invités: Voici, j'ai apprêtémon banquet, mes taureaux et mes bêtes grasses ont été égorgés, tout est prêt, venez aux noces.
But they ignored this and they went away: one to his country estate, and another to his business.5 Mais eux, n'en ayant cure, s'en allèrent, qui à son champ, qui à son commerce;
Yet truly, the rest took hold of his servants and, having treated them with contempt, killed them.6 et les autres, s'emparant des serviteurs, les maltraitèrent et les tuèrent.
But when the king heard this, he was angry. And sending out his armies, he destroyed those murderers, and he burned their city.7 Le roi fut pris de colère et envoya ses troupes qui firent périr ces meurtriers et incendièrent leurville.
Then he said to his servants: ‘The wedding, indeed, has been prepared. But those who were invited were not worthy.8 Alors il dit à ses serviteurs: La noce est prête, mais les invités n'en étaient pas dignes.
Therefore, go out to the ways, and call whomever you will find to the wedding.’9 Allez donc aux départs des chemins, et conviez aux noces tous ceux que vous pourrez trouver.
And his servants, departing into the ways, gathered all those whom they found, bad and good, and the wedding was filled with guests.10 Ces serviteurs s'en allèrent par les chemins, ramassèrent tous ceux qu'ils trouvèrent, les mauvaiscomme les bons, et la salle de noces fut remplie de convives.
Then the king entered to see the guests. And he saw a man there who was not clothed in a wedding garment.11 "Le roi entra alors pour examiner les convives, et il aperçut là un homme qui ne portait pas latenue de noces.
And he said to him, ‘Friend, how is it that you have entered here without having a wedding garment?’ But he was dumbstruck.12 Mon ami, lui dit-il, comment es-tu entré ici sans avoir une tenue de noces? L'autre resta muet.
Then the king said to the ministers: ‘Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.13 Alors le roi dit aux valets: Jetez-le, pieds et poings liés, dehors, dans les ténèbres: là seront lespleurs et les grincements de dents.
For many are called, but few are chosen.’ ”14 Car beaucoup sont appelés, mais peu sont élus.
Then the Pharisees, going out, took counsel as to how they might entrap him in speech.15 Alors les Pharisiens allèrent se concerter en vue de le surprendre en parole;
And they sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying: “Teacher, we know that you are truthful, and that you teach the way of God in truth, and that the influence of others is nothing to you. For you do not consider the reputation of men.16 et ils lui envoient leurs disciples, accompagnés des Hérodiens, pour lui dire: "Maître, noussavons que tu es véridique et que tu enseignes la voie de Dieu en vérité sans te préoccuper de qui que ce soit, cartu ne regardes pas au rang des personnes.
Therefore, tell us, how does it seem to you? Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar, or not?”17 Dis-nous donc ton avis: Est-il permis ou non de payer l'impôt à César?"
But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said: “Why do you test me, you hypocrites?18 Mais Jésus, connaissant leur perversité, riposta: "Hypocrites! pourquoi me tendez-vous unpiège?
Show me the coin of the census tax.” And they offered him a denarius.19 Faites-moi voir l'argent de l'impôt." Ils lui présentèrent un denier
And Jesus said to them, “Whose image is this, and whose inscription?”20 et il leur dit: "De qui est l'effigie que voici? Et l'inscription?" Ils disent:
They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Then render to Caesar what is of Caesar; and to God what is of God.”21 "De César." Alors il leur dit: "Rendez donc à César ce qui est à César, et à Dieu ce qui est àDieu."
And hearing this, they wondered. And having left him behind, they went away.22 A ces mots ils furent tout surpris et, le laissant, ils s'en allèrent.
In that day, the Sadducees, who say there is to be no resurrection, approached him. And they questioned him,23 Ce jour-là, des Sadducéens, gens qui disent qu'il n'y a pas de résurrection, s'approchèrent de luiet l'interrogèrent en disant:
saying: “Teacher, Moses said: If anyone will have died, having no son, his brother shall marry his wife, and he shall raise up offspring to his brother.24 "Maître, Moïse a dit: Si quelqu'un meurt sans avoir d'enfants, son frère épousera la femme, sabelle-soeur, et suscitera une postérité à son frère.
Now there were seven brothers with us. And the first, having taken a wife, died. And having no offspring, he left his wife to his brother:25 Or il y avait chez nous sept frères. Le premier se maria, puis mourut sans postérité, laissant safemme à son frère.
similarly with the second, and the third, even to the seventh.26 Pareillement le deuxième, puis le troisième, jusqu'au septième.
And last of all, the woman also passed away.27 Finalement, après eux tous, la femme mourut.
In the resurrection, then, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.”28 A la résurrection, duquel des sept sera-t-elle donc la femme? Car tous l'auront eue."
But Jesus responded to them by saying: “You have gone astray by knowing neither the Scriptures, nor the power of God.29 Jésus leur répondit: "Vous êtes dans l'erreur, en ne connaissant ni les Ecritures ni la puissance deDieu.
For in the resurrection, they shall neither marry, nor be given in marriage. Instead, they shall be like the Angels of God in heaven.30 A la résurrection, en effet, on ne prend ni femme ni mari, mais on est comme des anges dans leciel.
But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken by God, saying to you:31 Quant à ce qui est de la résurrection des morts, n'avez-vous pas lu l'oracle dans lequel Dieu vousdit:
‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?’ He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”32 Je suis le Dieu d'Abraham, le Dieu d'Isaac et le Dieu de Jacob? Ce n'est pas de morts mais devivants qu'il est le Dieu!"
And when the crowds heard this, they wondered at his doctrine.33 Et les foules, qui avaient entendu, étaient frappées de son enseignement.
But the Pharisees, hearing that he had caused the Sadducees to be silent, came together as one.34 Apprenant qu'il avait fermé la bouche aux Sadducéens, les Pharisiens se réunirent en groupe,
And one of them, a doctor of the law, questioned him, to test him:35 et l'un d'eux lui demanda pour l'embarrasser:
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”36 "Maître, quel est le plus grand commandement de la Loi?"
Jesus said to him: “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God from all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your mind.’37 Jésus lui dit: "Tu aimeras le Seigneur ton Dieu de tout ton coeur, de toute ton âme et de tout tonesprit:
This is the greatest and first commandment.38 voilà le plus grand et le premier commandement.
But the second is similar to it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’39 Le second lui est semblable: Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même.
On these two commandments the entire law depends, and also the prophets.”40 A ces deux commandements se rattache toute la Loi, ainsi que les Prophètes."
Then, when the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus questioned them,41 Comme les Pharisiens se trouvaient réunis, Jésus leur posa cette question:
saying: “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “David’s.”42 "Quelle est votre opinion au sujet du Christ? De qui est-il fils?" Ils lui disent: "De David" --
He said to them: “Then how can David, in the Spirit, call him Lord, saying:43 "Comment donc, dit-il, David parlant sous l'inspiration l'appelle-t-il Seigneur quand il dit:
‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool?’44 Le Seigneur a dit à mon Seigneur: Siège à ma droite, jusqu'à ce que j'aie mis tes ennemisdessous tes pieds?
So then, if David calls him Lord, how can he be his son?”45 Si donc David l'appelle Seigneur, comment est-il son fils?"
And no one was able to respond to him a word. And neither did anyone dare, from that day forward, to question him.46 Nul ne fut capable de lui répondre un mot. Et à partir de ce jour personne n'osa plus l'interroger.
