1 ALEPH. I am a man watching my own poverty by the rod of his indignation.	1 ALEF. Eu sou o homem que sentiu a miséria, debaixo da vara da sua indignação.
2 ALEPH. He has driven me and led me into darkness, and not into light.	2 ALEF. Conduziu-me e fez-me andar pelas trevas, e não pela luz.
3 ALEPH. Against me only, he has turned and turned again his hand, all day long.	3 ALEF. Não cessa de voltar, contra mim só, a sua mão durante todo o dia.
4 BETH. My skin and my flesh, he has made old; he has crushed my bones.	4 BET. Consumiu a minha carne e minha pele, partiu os meus ossos.
5 BETH. He has built all around me, and he has encircled me with gall and hardship.	5 BET. Ergueu construções contra mim, cercou-me de fel e de trabalho.
6 BETH. He has gathered me into darkness, like those who are forever dead.	6 BET. Pôs-me nas trevas, como os que estão mortos para sempre.
7 GHIMEL. He has built against me all around, so that I may not depart. He has increased the burden of my confinement.	7 CHIMEL. Cercou-me dum muro para que não possa sair; tornou pesados os meus grilhões.
8 GHIMEL. Yet even when I cry out and beg, he excludes my prayer.	8 CHIMEL. Ainda que eu clame e rogue, fica inacessível à minha oração.
9 GHIMEL. He has enclosed my ways with square stones; he has subverted my paths.	9 CHIMEL. Fechou os meus caminhos com pedras de silharia, obstruiu as minhas veredas.
10 DALETH. He has become to me like a bear lying in ambush, like a lion in hiding.	10 DALET. Tornou-se para mim como um urso em emboscada, como um leão em esconderijos.
11 DALETH. He has subverted my paths, and he has broken me. He has placed me in desolation.	11 DALET. Subverteu as minhas veredas, despedaçou-me, pôs-me na desolação.
12 DALETH. He has bent his bow, and he has positioned me like a target for his arrows.	12 DALET. Retesou (para disparar) o seu arco, e pôs-me como alvo das suas flechas.
13 HE. He has shot into my kidneys the daughters of his quiver.	13 HÉ. Cravou nos meus rins as setas da sua alvaja.
14 HE. I have become a derision to all my people, their song throughout the day.	14 HÉ. Tornei-me o escárnio de todo o meu povo o assunto das suas cantilenas diárias.
15 HE. He has filled me with bitterness; he has inebriated me with wormwood.	15 HÉ. Encheu-me de amargura, embriagou-me de absinto.
16 VAU. And he has broken each one of my teeth; he has fed me with ashes.	16 VAU. Quebrou todos os meus dentes com areia, deu-me a comer cinza.
17 VAU. And my soul has been driven away from peace; I have forgotten what is good.	17 VAU. Está desterrada a minha alma da paz; já não sei o que é felicidade.
18 VAU. And I said, “My end and my hope from the Lord has perished.”	18 VAU. Eu disse: Desapareceu a minha força, assim como a esperança que tinha no Senhor.
19 ZAIN. Remember my poverty and my transgression, the wormwood and the gall.	19 ZAIN. Lembra-te da minha pobreza e tribulação absinto e fel (que me fazem beber).
20 ZAIN. I will call to mind the past, and my soul shall languish within me.	20 ZAIN. Lembrando-me disto, sem cessar, a minha alma definha dentro de mim.
21 ZAIN. These recollections are in my heart; therefore, I shall hope.	21 ZAIN. Mas eis o que repassarei no meu coração, para retomar esperança:
22 HETH. By the mercies of the Lord, we are not consumed. For his compassion has not passed away.	22 HET. Por graça do Senhor não fomos consumidos (inteiramente); sim, as suas comiserações não se esgotaram.
23 HETH. I know it at first light; great is your faithfulness.	23 HET. Elas renovam-se todas as manhãs; grande é (ó Senhor) a tua fidelidade.
24 HETH. “The Lord is my portion,” said my soul. Because of this, I will wait for him.	24 HET. A minha porção é o Senhor, disse a minha alma; portanto esperarei nele.
25 TETH. The Lord is good to those who hope in him, to the soul that seeks him.	25 TET. O Senhor é bom para o que nele espera, para a alma que o busca.
26 TETH. It is good to stand ready in silence for the salvation of God.	26 TET. É bom esperar em silêncio a salvação (que vem de) Deus.
27 TETH. It is good for a man, when he has carried the yoke from his youth.	27 TET. É bom para o homem ter levado o jugo desde a sua mocidade.
28 JOD. He shall sit solitary and silent. For he has lifted it upon himself.	28 JOD. Sente-se solitário e fique (resignado) em silêncio, se Deus lho impuser.
29 JOD. He shall place his mouth in the dirt, if perhaps there may be hope.	29 JOD. Ponha a sua boca no pó, a ver se há alguma esperança.
30 JOD. He shall give his cheek to those who strike him; he shall be saturated with reproaches.	30 JOD. Ofereça a face ao que o fere, sacie-se de opróbrios.
31 CAPH. For the Lord will not rebuke forever.	31 CAF. Porque o Senhor não nos rejeita para sempre;
32 CAPH. For, if he has cast down, he will also have compassion, according to the multitude of his mercies.	32 CAF. mesmo quando aflige, também se compadece (de nós), segundo a grande bondade.
33 CAPH. For he has not humiliated from his heart, nor has he thrown aside the sons of men,	33 CAF. Com efeito não humilha nem atormenta, por gosto, os filhos dos homens.
34 LAMED. as if to crush under his feet all the prisoners of the land,	34 LAMED. Pisar aos seus pés todos os cativos da terra,
35 LAMED. as if to turn aside the judgment of a man in the sight of the presence of the Most High,	35 LAMED. violar o direito dum homem ante a presença do Altíssimo,
36 LAMED. as if to pervert a man in his judgment: the Lord does not do this.	36 LAMED. prejudicar um homem na sua causa, o Senhor não há-de ver tudo isto?
37 MEM. Who is this, who said to do what the Lord did not command?	37 MEM. Quem é que disse que se fizesse uma coisa, sem que o Senhor o mandasse?
38 MEM. Does not both misfortune and good proceed from the mouth of the Most High?	38 MEM. Não saem da boca do Altíssimo os males e os bens?
39 MEM. Why has a living man murmured, a man suffering for his sins?	39 MEM. Por que se queixa (pois) o homem, na sua vida? Queixe-se, sim, dos seus pecados.
40 NUN. Let us examine our ways, and seek out, and return to the Lord.	40 NUN. Examinemos, investiguemos os nossos passos, e voltemos ao Senhor.
41 NUN. Let us lift up our hearts, with our hands, toward the Lord in the heavens.	41 NUN. Levantemos os corações e as mãos para Deus nos céus.
42 NUN. We have acted sinfully, and we have provoked to wrath. About this, you are relentless.	42 NUN. Procedemos injustamente, fomos rebeldes; e tu não perdoaste.
43 SAMECH. You have covered us in your fury, and you have struck us. You have killed, and have not spared.	43 SAMEG. Envolveste-te de cólera e perseguiste-nos, mataste sem misericórdia.
44 SAMECH. You have set a cloud opposite you, lest our prayer pass through.	44 SAMEG. Puseste uma nuvem diante de ti, para a oração não passar.
45 SAMECH. In the midst of the peoples, you have uprooted me and cast me out.	45 SAMEC. Fizeste de nós varreduras e rebotalho, no meio dos povos.
46 PHE. All our enemies have opened their mouths over us.	46 FE. Abriram contra nós a sua boca todos os nossos inimigos.
47 PHE. Prediction has become for us a dread, and a snare, and a grief.	47 FE. Foram a nossa parte o terror e a cova, a devastação e a ruína.
48 PHE. My eye has brought forth streams of water at the contrition of the daughter of my people.	48 FE. Os meus olhos derramam rios de lágrimas, por causa da ruína da filha do meu povo.
49 AIN. My eye has been afflicted, and it has not been quieted, because there would be no rest	49 AIN. Os meus olhos fundem-se em pranto contínuo, sem descanso,
50 AIN. until the Lord looked down and saw from the heavens.	50 AIN. até que olhe e veja o Senhor do alto dos céus.
51 AIN. My eye has exhausted my soul over every one of the daughters of my city.	51 AIN. Os meus olhos atormentam-me, chorando sobre todas as filhas da minha cidade.
52 SADE. My enemies have chased me, and they have caught me like a bird, without reason.	52 SADE. Como a uma ave me deram caga, os meus inimigos sem causa.
53 SADE. My life has fallen into a pit, and they have placed a stone over me.	53 SADE. Quiseram precipitar a minha vida na cova, puseram sobre mim uma pedra.
54 SADE. The waters have flooded over my head. I said, “I am lost.”	54 SADE. As águas submergiram a minha cabeça; eu disse então: Estou perdido.
55 COPH. I called upon your name, O Lord, from the furthest pit.	55 COF. Invoquei, Senhor, o teu nome, do fundo da cova.
56 COPH. You have heard my voice. Do not turn away your ear from my sobbing and my cries.	56 COF. Tu ouviste a minha voz: Não feches o teu ouvido aos meus soluços e clamores.
57 COPH. You drew near in the daytime, when I called upon you. You said, “Fear not.”	57 COF. Tu te aproximaste no dia em que te invoquei, e disseste: Não temas.
58 RES. You have judged, O Lord, the case of my soul. You are the Redeemer of my life.	58 RES. Senhor, defendeste a causa da minha alma resgataste a minha vida.
59 RES. You have seen, O Lord, their iniquity against me. Judge my case.	59 RES. Viste, Senhor, a iniquidade deles contra mim; faze-me justiça.
60 RES. You have seen all their fury, every one of their thoughts is against me.	60 RES. Viste todo o seu rancor, todas as suas maquinações contra mim.
61 SIN. You have heard their reproach, O Lord, all their thoughts are against me.	61 SIN. Ouviste senhor, os seus vitupérios todas as suas maquinações contra mim,
62 SIN. The lips of those who rise up against me, and their meditations, are against me all day long.	62 SIN. os intentos dos meus adversários, o que tramam contra mim todo o dia.
63 SIN. Watch their sitting down and their rising up: I am their psalm.	63 SIN. Observa-os, quando sentados ou quando de pé: eu sou o objecto das suas canções (burlescas).
64 THAU. You shall pay a recompense to them, O Lord, according to the works of their hands.	64 TAU. Tu, Senhor, lhes darás o pago, como merecem as obras das suas mãos.
65 THAU. You shall give them a heavy shield of the heart: your hardship.	65 TAU. Dar-lhes-ás o endurecimento de coração; caia sobre eles a tua maldição.
66 THAU. You shall pursue them in fury, and you shall destroy them under the heavens, O Lord.	66 TAU. Tu os perseguirás com furor e exterminarás de debaixo dos céus, ó Senhor.
