1 ALEPH. I am a man watching my own poverty by the rod of his indignation.	1 ALEPH. Uom son io, che conosco la mia miseria sotto la verga dell'ira di lui.
2 ALEPH. He has driven me and led me into darkness, and not into light.	2 ALEPH. Tra le tenebre mi ha condotto, e non al chiaror della luce.
3 ALEPH. Against me only, he has turned and turned again his hand, all day long.	3 ALEPH. Non ha fatt'altro, che percuotermi, e ripercuotermi tutto giorno colla sua mano.
4 BETH. My skin and my flesh, he has made old; he has crushed my bones.	4 BETH. Ha fatta invecchiar la mia pelle, e la mia carne, ha stritolate le ossa mie.
5 BETH. He has built all around me, and he has encircled me with gall and hardship.	5 BETH. Ha alzato un muro intorno a me, e mi ha circondato di amarezze, e di affanni.

7 GHIMEL. He has built against me all around, so that I may not depart. He has increased the burden of my confinement.	7 GHIMEL. Mi serrò con ripari all'intorno, perch' io non ne esca: aggravò i miei ceppi.
8 GHIMEL. Yet even when I cry out and beg, he excludes my prayer.	8 GHIMEL. Ed oltre a ciò, quand'io alzi le grida, e lo preghi, ha chiuso il varco alla mia orazione.
9 GHIMEL. He has enclosed my ways with square stones; he has subverted my paths.	9 GHIMEL. Mi ha chiuse le strade con pietre quadrate: ha ruinati i miei sentieri.
10 DALETH. He has become to me like a bear lying in ambush, like a lion in hiding.	10 DALETH. Egli è divenuto per me qual orso, che sta in aguato: come lione in luogo rimoto.
11 DALETH. He has subverted my paths, and he has broken me. He has placed me in desolation.	11 DALETH. Egli ha rumati i miei sentieri, e mi ha straziato, mi ha abbandonato alla desolazione.
12 DALETH. He has bent his bow, and he has positioned me like a target for his arrows.	12 DALETH. Egli tese il suo arco, e mi fè come segno agli strali.
13 HE. He has shot into my kidneys the daughters of his quiver.	13 HE. Ne' miei reni ha confitte le frecce del suo turcasso.
14 HE. I have become a derision to all my people, their song throughout the day.	14 HE. Son divenuto il ludìbrio di tutto il mio popolo; la lor canzone per tutto il giorno.
15 HE. He has filled me with bitterness; he has inebriated me with wormwood.	15 HE. Mi ha ripieno di amarezza, mi ha inebriato di assenzio.
16 VAU. And he has broken each one of my teeth; he has fed me with ashes.	16 VAU. Ed ha spezzati a uno a uno tutti i miei denti, mi ha cibato di cenere.
17 VAU. And my soul has been driven away from peace; I have forgotten what is good.	17 VAU. E bandita Dall'anima mia la pace; non so più che sia bene.
18 VAU. And I said, “My end and my hope from the Lord has perished.”	18 VAU. Ed io dissi: Ogni termine per me è sparito, e l'espettazione mia nel Signore.
19 ZAIN. Remember my poverty and my transgression, the wormwood and the gall.	19 ZAIN. Ricorditi della miseria, miseria mia eccedente, e dell'assenzio, e del fiele.
20 ZAIN. I will call to mind the past, and my soul shall languish within me.	20 ZAIN. Queste cose ho di continuo alla memoria, e si strugge l'anima mia dentro di me.
21 ZAIN. These recollections are in my heart; therefore, I shall hope.	21 ZAIN. Queste cose riandando in cuor mio, per questo io spererò.
22 HETH. By the mercies of the Lord, we are not consumed. For his compassion has not passed away.	22 HETH. Misericordia del Signore ell'è, che noi non siamo consunti: perchè non son mai venute meno le sue misericordie.
23 HETH. I know it at first light; great is your faithfulness.	23 HETH. Delle nuove ne sono ogni mattina: grandemente fedele se' tu.
24 HETH. “The Lord is my portion,” said my soul. Because of this, I will wait for him.	24 HETH. Mia porzione è il Signore, disse l'anima mia: per questo io lo aspetterò.
25 TETH. The Lord is good to those who hope in him, to the soul that seeks him.	25 TETH. Buono è il Signore a que', che sperano in lui, all'anima, che lo cerca.
26 TETH. It is good to stand ready in silence for the salvation of God.	26 TETH. Buona cosa è l'aspettare in silenzio la salute di Dio.
27 TETH. It is good for a man, when he has carried the yoke from his youth.	27 TETH. Buona cosa è per l'uomo l'aver portato il giogo fin dalla sua adolescenza.
28 JOD. He shall sit solitary and silent. For he has lifted it upon himself.	28 JOD. Ei sederà solitario, e si tacerà, perch'egli il giogo ha preso sopra di se.
29 JOD. He shall place his mouth in the dirt, if perhaps there may be hope.	29 JOD. Porrà la bocca sua nella polvere (cercando) se a sorte siavi speranza.
30 JOD. He shall give his cheek to those who strike him; he shall be saturated with reproaches.	30 JOD. Porgerà la guancia a chi lo percuote: sarà satollato d'ignominie.
31 CAPH. For the Lord will not rebuke forever.	31 CAPH. Perocché non per sempre rigetterà da se il Signore.
32 CAPH. For, if he has cast down, he will also have compassion, according to the multitude of his mercies.	32 CAPH. Perocché se egli ci ha rigettati, avrà anche pietà secondo le molte sue misericordie.
33 CAPH. For he has not humiliated from his heart, nor has he thrown aside the sons of men,	33 CAPH. Perocché non di sua elezione egli umilia, e rigetta i figliuoli degli uomini,
34 LAMED. as if to crush under his feet all the prisoners of the land,	34 LAMED. Ma per calpestare sotto i suoi piedi tutti gli schiavi della terra,
35 LAMED. as if to turn aside the judgment of a man in the sight of the presence of the Most High,	35 LAMED. Pesare con non giusta bilancia la causa d'un uomo nel suo cospetto.
36 LAMED. as if to pervert a man in his judgment: the Lord does not do this.	36 LAMED. Ledere ingiustamente un uomo nel suo giudizio: ciò non sa fare il Signore.
37 MEM. Who is this, who said to do what the Lord did not command?	37 MEM. Chi è colui, che ha detto, che si facesse una cosa, senza che il Signore la comandasse?
38 MEM. Does not both misfortune and good proceed from the mouth of the Most High?	38 MEM. Non verran eglino dalla bocca del Signore i beni, ed i mali?
39 MEM. Why has a living man murmured, a man suffering for his sins?	39 MEM. Perchè mai uomo vivente querelavasi dell'effetto de' suoi peccati?
40 NUN. Let us examine our ways, and seek out, and return to the Lord.	40 NUN. Disaminiamo, e facciam ricerca de' nostri andamenti, e torniamo al Signore.
41 NUN. Let us lift up our hearts, with our hands, toward the Lord in the heavens.	41 NUN. Alziamo al cielo insiem colle mani i cuori nostri al Signore.
42 NUN. We have acted sinfully, and we have provoked to wrath. About this, you are relentless.	42 NUN. Noi iniquamente ci diportammo, e ti provocammo ad ira: per questo tu se' inesorabile.
43 SAMECH. You have covered us in your fury, and you have struck us. You have killed, and have not spared.	43 SAMECH. Tu ti cuopristi col tuo furore, e ci percuotesti: tu uccidesti, e non perdonasti.
44 SAMECH. You have set a cloud opposite you, lest our prayer pass through.	44 SAMECH. Ti ponesti davanti una nuvola, perchè non arrivasse a te l'orazione.
45 SAMECH. In the midst of the peoples, you have uprooted me and cast me out.	45 SAMECH. Tu mi hai diradicato, e gettato per terra sulla faccia di tutti i popoli.
46 PHE. All our enemies have opened their mouths over us.	46 PHE. Tutti i nemici hanno aperta la loro bocca contro di noi.
47 PHE. Prediction has become for us a dread, and a snare, and a grief.	47 PHE. La profezia fu per noi terrore, e laccio, e rovina.
48 PHE. My eye has brought forth streams of water at the contrition of the daughter of my people.	48 PHE. Rivi di acque spargono gli occhi miei sopra l'afflizione della figliuola del popol mio.
49 AIN. My eye has been afflicted, and it has not been quieted, because there would be no rest	49 AIN. Il mio occhio è afflitto, né si dà posa, perchè requie alcuna non è,
50 AIN. until the Lord looked down and saw from the heavens.	50 AIN. Fino a tanto che il Signore volga l'occhio dal cielo, e rimiri.
51 AIN. My eye has exhausted my soul over every one of the daughters of my city.	51 AIN. L'occhio mio è stato nemico della mia vita, in piangendo le figlie tutte della mia patria.
52 SADE. My enemies have chased me, and they have caught me like a bird, without reason.	52 SADE. Come uccello alla caccia mi presero i miei nemici senza mia colpa.
53 SADE. My life has fallen into a pit, and they have placed a stone over me.	53 SADE. E caduta l'anima mia nella fossa: hanno posta una pietra sopra di me.
54 SADE. The waters have flooded over my head. I said, “I am lost.”	54 SADE. Un diluvio di acque si è scaricato sulla mia testa: io dissi: Son perduto
55 COPH. I called upon your name, O Lord, from the furthest pit.	55 COPH. Invocai il nome tuo o Signore,dalla fossa profonda.
56 COPH. You have heard my voice. Do not turn away your ear from my sobbing and my cries.	56 COPH. Tu ascoltasti la voce mia; or non chiuder le orecchie tue a' mie singulti, e a' miei clamori.
57 COPH. You drew near in the daytime, when I called upon you. You said, “Fear not.”	57 COPH. Tu ti appressasti nel giorno, ch'io ti invocai: dicesti: Non temere.
58 RES. You have judged, O Lord, the case of my soul. You are the Redeemer of my life.	58 RES. Tu pronunziasti in favore dell'anima mia, o redentore della mia vita.
59 RES. You have seen, O Lord, their iniquity against me. Judge my case.	59 RES. Tu hai veduto, o Signore, l'iniquità loro inverso di me: fammi giustizia.
60 RES. You have seen all their fury, every one of their thoughts is against me.	60 RES. Tu vedesti i lor furori, e tutti i loro disegni contro di me.
61 SIN. You have heard their reproach, O Lord, all their thoughts are against me.	61 SIN. Tu udisti, o Signore, le lor villanie, e i lor pensieri contro di me;
62 SIN. The lips of those who rise up against me, and their meditations, are against me all day long.	62 SIN. E le parole di color, che mi fanno guerra, e quel, ch'ei meditan tutto giorno contro di me.
63 SIN. Watch their sitting down and their rising up: I am their psalm.	63 SIN. Osserva come andando essi, e venendo, io sono la loro canzone.
64 THAU. You shall pay a recompense to them, O Lord, according to the works of their hands.	64 THAU. Tu renderai loro, o Signore, se condo le opere delle lor mani.
65 THAU. You shall give them a heavy shield of the heart: your hardship.	65 THAU. Tu porrai sopra il cuor loro per iscudo gli attuimi, che lor manderai.
66 THAU. You shall pursue them in fury, and you shall destroy them under the heavens, O Lord.	66 THAU. Li perseguiterai col furor tuo, e lispergerai di sotto al cieli, o Signore.
