CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINSacra Bibbia Garofalo
Why is it necessary for a man to seek things that are greater than himself, when he does not know what is advantageous for himself in his life, during the number of the days of his sojourn, and while time passes by like a shadow? Or who will be able to tell him what will be in the future after him under the sun?1 Una buona fama è preferibile a un buon profumo e il giorno della morte a quello della nascita.
A good name is better than precious ointments, and a day of death is better than a day of birth.2 Meglio andare a una casa in lutto che a una in festa: perché quello è il termine di arrivo per ogni uomo e chi vive se lo tiene a mente.
It is better to go to a house of mourning, than to a house of feasting. For in the former, we are admonished about the end of all things, so that the living consider what may be in the future.3 È preferibile la mestizia al riso, perché sotto l’aspetto triste il cuore sta bene.
Anger is better than laughter. For through the sadness of the countenance, the soul of one who offends may be corrected.4 Il cuore dei saggi è sempre nella casa in lutto e quello. degli stolti nella casa in festa.
The heart of the wise is a place of mourning, and the heart of the foolish is a place of rejoicing.5 Meglio sentire il rimprovero di un saggio che ascoltare il canto degli stolti,
It is better to be corrected by a wise man, than to be deceived by the false praise of the foolish.6 perché come il crepitare degli sterpi sotto la pentola, così è il ridere degli stolti. Ma anche questo è vanità
For, like the crackling of thorns burning under a pot, so is the laughter of the foolish. But this, too, is emptiness.7 poiché le raccomandazioni possono far deviare anche un saggio e il dono corromperne il cuore.
A false accusation troubles the wise man and saps the strength of his heart.8 È preferibile la fine di una cosa all’inizio: meglio uno spirito paziente che uno orgoglioso.
The end of a speech is better than the beginning. Patience is better than arrogance.9 Non essere facile all’ira dentro di te, poiché l’irritazione cova in seno agli stolti.
Do not be quickly moved to anger. For anger resides in the sinews of the foolish.10 Non dire: «Perché in passato andava meglio che non ora?», perché non è da saggio una tale domanda.
You should not say: “What do you think is the reason that the former times were better than they are now?” For this type of question is foolish.11 La sapienza è buona unita a un patrimonio e utile a chi vede il sole,
Wisdom with riches is more useful and more advantageous, for those who see the sun.12 perché se difende la sapienza, difende anche il denaro; però la sapienza ha questo vantaggi che dà vita a colui che la possiede.
For as wisdom protects, so also does money protect. But learning and wisdom have this much more: that they grant life to one who possesses them.13 Considera l'opere di Dio: chi può raddrizzare ciò che egli ha fatto curvo?
Consider the works of God, that no one is able to correct whomever he has despised.14 Nei giorni lieti sta’ allegro, nei giorni tristi ragiona così: «Questo e quello ha fatto Dio, perché l’uomo non lo incolpi di nulla»
In good times, enjoy good things, but beware of an evil time. For just as God has establish the one, so also the other, in order that man may not find any just complaint against him.15 Tutto questo ho visto nei miei giorni vani: con tutta la sua giustizia un giusto muore e, nonostante la sua empietà, un malvagio campa a lungo.
I also saw this, in the days of my vanity: a just man perishing in his justice, and an impious man living a long time in his malice.16 Non essere troppo giusto e non fare troppo il saggio, per non rovinarti.
Do not try to be overly just, and do not try to be more wise than is necessary, lest you become stupid.17 Non essere perverso e non far lo stolto, per non morire prima del tempo.
Do not act with great impiety, and do not choose to be foolish, lest you die before your time.18 Beato chi prende questo senza staccare la mano da quello, perché chi teme Dio evita tutte queste cose.
It is good for you to support a just man. Furthermore, you should not withdraw your hand from him, for whoever fears God, neglects nothing.19 La sapienza rende il saggio più forte di dieci potenti che sono nella città.
Wisdom has strengthened the wise more than ten princes of a city.20 Certo, non c’è sulla terra uomo giusto che faccia solo del bene e non pecchi.
But there is no just man on earth, who does good and does not sin.21 Ancora: non dar peso a tutte le chiacchiere che si fanno, per non sentire lo schiavo che mormora di te.
So then, do not attach your heart to every word that is spoken, lest perhaps you may hear your servant speaking ill of you.22 Il tuo cuore sa bene che molte volte hai detto male degli altri. È
For your conscience knows that you, too, have repeatedly spoken evil of others.23 Tutto ciò ho voluto vagliare con la sapienza dicendo: «Voglio divenire saggio », ma essa era ben lontana da me.
I have tested everything in wisdom. I have said: “I will be wise.” And wisdom withdrew farther from me,24 Rimane lontano ciò che era lontano e profondo ciò che era profondo: chi lo potrà raggiungere,
so much more than it was before. Wisdom is very profound, so who shall reveal her?25 Ritornai a riflettere dentro di me; a cercare sapienza e ragione, a riconoscere che la malizia è stoltezza e la stoltezza è pazzia.
I have examined all things in my soul, so that I may know, and consider, and seek out wisdom and reason, and so that I may recognize the impiety of the foolish, and the error of the imprudent.26 E scoprii come più amara della morte è la donna, che è tutta una rete e il suo cuore è laccio e funi le mani. Chi piace a Dio ne scampa, ma chi pecca ne sarà prigioniero.
And I have discovered a woman more bitter than death: she who is like the snare of a hunter, and whose heart is like a net, and whose hands are like chains. Whoever pleases God shall flee from her. But whoever is a sinner shall be seized by her.27 Vedi, qpesto ho trovato, dice Kohelet, di cosa in cosa per riuscire a darmene ragione.
Behold, Ecclesiastes said, I have discovered these things, one after another, in order that I might discover the explanation28 Ma ciò che la mia mente ricerca e non ha ancora trovato è: «Fra mille ho trovato un solo uomo; ma una donna, fra tante, non l’ho trovata».
which my soul still seeks and has not found. One man among a thousand, I have found; a woman among them all, I have not found.29 Questo solo, vedi, ho trovato: «Dio ha fatto gli uomini come si deve, ma essi vanno a cercare ogni sorta d’intrighi».
This alone have I discovered: that God made man righteous, and yet he has adulterated himself with innumerable questions. Who is so great as the wise? And who has understood the meaning of the word?
