Alleluia. Confess to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy is with every generation.1 Al eluia! Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, his faithful love is everlasting!
Let those who have been redeemed by the Lord say so: those whom he redeemed from the hand of the enemy and gathered from the regions,2 Who can recount al Yahweh's triumphs, who can ful y voice his praise?
from the rising of the sun and its setting, from the north and from the sea.3 How blessed are those who keep to what is just, whose conduct is always upright!
They wandered into solitude in a waterless place. They did not find the way of the city to be their dwelling place.4 Remember me, Yahweh, in your love for your people. Come near to me with your saving power,
They were hungry, and they were thirsty. Their soul fainted within them.5 let me share the happiness of your chosen ones, let me share the joy of your people, the pride ofyour heritage.
And they cried out to the Lord in tribulation, and he rescued them in their necessity.6 Like our ancestors, we have sinned, we have acted wickedly, guiltily;
And he led them in the right way, so that they might go forth to a city of habitation.7 our ancestors in Egypt never grasped the meaning of your wonders. They did not bear in mind yourcountless acts of love, at the Sea of Reeds they defied the Most High;
Let his mercies confess to the Lord, and let his miracles confess to the sons of men.8 but for the sake of his name he saved them, to make known his mighty power.
For he has satisfied the empty soul, and he has satisfied the hungry soul with good things:9 At his rebuke the Sea of Reeds dried up, he let them pass through the deep as though it were desert,
those sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death, shackled by extreme poverty and by iron.10 so he saved them from their opponents' clutches, rescued them from the clutches of their enemies.
For they exasperated the eloquence of God, and they irritated the deliberation of the Most High.11 The waters enveloped their enemies, not one of whom was left.
And their heart was brought low with hardships. They were weakened, and there was no one to help them.12 Then they believed what he had said, and sang his praises.
And they cried out to the Lord in their tribulation, and he freed them from their distress.13 But they soon forgot his achievements, they did not even wait for his plans;
And he led them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and he broke apart their chains.14 they were overwhelmed with greed in the wastelands, in the solitary wastes they challenged God.
Let his mercies confess to the Lord, and let his miracles confess to the sons of men.15 He gave them al they asked for, but struck them with a deep wasting sickness;
For he has crushed the gates of brass and broken the iron bars.16 in the camp they grew jealous of Moses, and of Aaron, Yahweh's holy one.
He has taken them up, from the way of their iniquity. For they were brought low, because of their injustices.17 The earth opened and swal owed up Dathan, closed in on Abiram's faction;
Their soul abhorred all food, and they drew near even to the gates of death.18 fire flamed out against their faction, the renegades were engulfed in flames.
And they cried out to the Lord in their tribulation, and he delivered them in their necessity.19 At Horeb they made a calf, bowed low before cast metal;
He sent his word, and he healed them, and he rescued them from their utter destruction.20 they exchanged their glory for the image of a grass-eating bull.
Let his mercies confess to the Lord, and let his miracles confess to the sons of men.21 They forgot the God who was saving them, who had done great deeds in Egypt,
And let them offer sacrifice with the sacrifice of praise, and let them announce his works in exultation.22 such wonders in the land of Ham, such awesome deeds at the Sea of Reeds.
Those who descend to the sea in ships, making their livelihood in the great waters:23 He thought of putting an end to them, had not Moses, his chosen one, taken a stand in the breachand confronted him, to turn his anger away from destroying them.
these have seen the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep.24 They counted a desirable land for nothing, they put no trust in his promise;
He spoke: and a windstorm stood up, and its waves were exalted.25 they stayed in their tents and grumbled, they would not listen to Yahweh's voice.
They ascend even to the heavens, and they descend even to the abyss. Their soul will waste away in distress.26 So he lifted his hand against them, to strike them down in the desert,
They were troubled, and they moved like a drunkard, and all their wisdom was consumed.27 to strike down their descendants among the nations, to scatter them al over the world.
And they cried out to the Lord in their tribulation, and he led them out of their distress.28 They committed themselves to serve Baal-Peor, and ate sacrifices made to lifeless gods.
And he replaced the storm with a breeze, and its waves were stilled.29 They so provoked him by their actions that a plague broke out among them.
And they were joyful that it was stilled, and he led them into the haven that they desired.30 Then up stood Phinehas to intervene, and the plague was checked;
Let his mercies confess to the Lord, and let his miracles confess to the sons of men.31 for this he is the example of uprightness, from age to age for ever.
And let them exalt him in the Church of the people, and praise him in the chair of the elders.32 At the waters of Meribah they so angered Yahweh, that Moses suffered on their account,
He has placed rivers in the desert and sources of water in dry places,33 for they had embittered his spirit, and he spoke without due thought.
a fruit-bearing land in the midst of brine, before the malice of those who dwell in it.34 They did not destroy the nations, as Yahweh had told them to do,
He has placed a desert in the midst of pools of waters, and a land without water in the midst of sources of water.35 but intermarried with them, and adopted their ways.
And he has gathered the hungry together there, and they constructed a city of habitation.36 They worshipped those nations' false gods, til they found themselves entrapped,
And they sowed fields and planted vineyards, and they produced the fruit of nativity.37 and sacrificed their own sons and their daughters to demons.
And he blessed them, and they were multiplied exceedingly. And he did not diminish their beasts of burden.38 Innocent blood they shed, the blood of their sons and daughters; offering them to the idols ofCanaan, they pol uted the country with blood.
And they became few, and they were afflicted by the tribulation of evils and of sorrow.39 They defiled themselves by such actions, their behaviour was that of a harlot.
Contempt was poured over their leaders, and he caused them to wander in an impassable place, and not on the way.40 Yahweh's anger blazed out at his people, his own heritage fil ed him with disgust.
And he helped the poor out of destitution, and he stationed families like sheep.41 He handed them over to the nations, and their opponents became their masters;
The upright will see, and they will rejoice. And every iniquity will block its mouth.42 their enemies lorded it over them, crushing them under their rule.
Who is wise and will keep these things? And who will understand the mercies of the Lord?43 Time and again he rescued them, but they stil defied him deliberately, and sank ever deeper in theirguilt;
even so he took pity on their distress, as soon as he heard them cry out.
Bearing his covenant with them in mind, he relented in his boundless and faithful love;
he ensured that they received compassion, in their treatment by al their captors.
Save us, Yahweh our God, gather us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holyname, and may glory in praising you.
Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, from all eternity and for ever! Let all the people say, 'Amen'.
