But Eliphaz the Themanite, answering, said:1 Elifaz de Temán respondió así:
If we start to speak to you, perhaps you will take it badly, but who can hold back the words he has conceived?2 «¿Soportarás que te dirijan la palabra?; | ¿quién podría contener una respuesta?
Behold, you have taught many, and you have strengthened weary hands.3 Tú, que a tantos instruías | y fortalecías los brazos endebles;
Your words have reassured the wavering, and you have fortified the trembling knees.4 tus palabras animaban al vacilante, | robustecías las rodillas inseguras,
But now the scourge has overcome you, and you falter. It has touched you, and you are disturbed.5 ¿y ahora que te toca a ti, flaqueas, | te llega el turno y te espantas?
Where is your reverence, your fortitude, your patience, and the perfection of your ways?6 ¿No confiabas en tu piedad? | ¿No ponías la esperanza en tu honradez?
Consider this, I beg you: who ever perished being innocent? Or when have the righteous been destroyed?7 ¿Recuerdas a un inocente destruido? | ¿Has visto a los justos exterminados?
In fact, I have instead seen those who work iniquity and who sow resentments, reap them,8 Yo he visto que quienes labran maldad | y siembran desgracia, las cosechan.
perishing by the breath of God, and being consumed by the wrath of his spirit.9 Cuando Dios alienta, perecen, | el soplo de su ira los consume.
The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of young lions have been worn away.10 Aunque ruja el león y gruña la fiera, | a los cachorros les arrancan los dientes.
The tiger has perished because it does not have prey, and the young lions have been scattered.11 Perece el león por falta de presa, | las crías de la leona se dispersan.
Furthermore, a word was spoken to me in secret, and, as if by theft, my ears received the pulse of its whisper.12 Me llegó una palabra furtiva, | oí su suave susurro;
In the horror of a vision by night, when men are accustomed to be overtaken by a deep sleep,13 entre pesadillas de visiones nocturnas, | cuando el letargo se ceba en los hombres,
fear and trembling seized me and all my bones were terrified.14 fui presa de terror y agitación, | se estremecieron todos mis huesos.
And when a spirit passed before me, the hair on my body stood up.15 Se deslizó un viento por mi cara | que erizó el vello de mi cuerpo.
There appeared an image before my eyes, someone whose face I did not recognize, and I heard a voice like a gentle breeze.16 Allí estaba, de pie; | no reconocí su figura, | pero vi su imagen ante mí. | Tras el silencio escuché una voz:
Should man be justified in relation to God, or will a man be more pure than his Maker?17 “¿Puede un mortal ser justo ante Dios?, | ¿o un hombre ser puro ante su Hacedor?”.
Behold, those who serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he finds imperfection.18 Si no confía en sus siervos, | si en sus mensajeros percibe defectos,
How much more will those who live in houses of clay, which have an earthly foundation, be consumed like the moth?19 ¿qué hará con los que habitan entre adobes, | en casas cimentadas sobre barro? | ¡Se los aplasta igual que a la polilla!
From morning all the way to evening, they will be cut down, and because no one understands, they will be destroyed without ceasing.20 De la mañana a la tarde se derrumban, | desaparecen sin que a nadie le importe.
But those who are left behind will be taken away from them; they will die, and not in wisdom.21 Les arrancan las clavijas de su tienda | y mueren por falta de sabiduría.
