NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
The men of Kiriath-Jearim came and, taking up the ark of Yahweh, brought it to the house of Abinadabon the hil , and consecrated his son Eleazar to guard the ark of Yahweh.1 Venerunt ergo viri Cariathiarim et duxerunt arcam Domini sursum et intulerunt eam in domum Abinadab in colle; Eleazarum autem filium eius sanctificaverunt, ut custodiret arcam Domini.
From the day when the ark was instal ed at Kiriath-Jearim, a long time went by -- twenty years -- andthe whole House of Israel longed for Yahweh.2 Et factum est, ex qua die mansit arca Domini in Cariathiarim, multiplicati sunt dies; erat quippe iam annus vicesimus, et ingemuit omnis domus Israel post Dominum.
Samuel then spoke as follows to the whole House of Israel, 'If you are returning to Yahweh with al yourheart, banish the foreign gods and Astartes which you now have, and set your heart on Yahweh and serve himalone; and he will deliver you from the power of the Philistines.'3 Ait autem Samuel ad universam domum Israel dicens: “ Si in toto corde vestro revertimini ad Dominum, auferte deos alienos de medio vestri et Astharoth et praeparate corda vestra Domino et servite ei soli, et eruet vos de manu Philisthim ”.
And the Israelites banished the Baals and Astartes and served Yahweh alone.4 Abstulerunt ergo filii Israel Baalim et Astharoth et servierunt Domino soli.
Samuel then said, 'Muster al Israel at Mizpah and I shal plead with Yahweh for you.'5 Dixit autem Samuel: “ Congregate universum Israel in Maspha, ut orem pro vobis Dominum ”.
So they mustered at Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before Yahweh. They fasted that dayand declared, 'We have sinned against Yahweh.' And Samuel was judge over the Israelites at Mizpah.6 Et convenerunt in Maspha hauseruntque aquam et effuderunt in conspectu Domini et ieiunaverunt in die illa et dixerunt ibi: “ Peccavimus Domino ”. Iudicavitque Samuel filios Israel in Maspha.
When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had mustered at Mizpah, the Philistine chiefs marched onIsrael; and when the Israelites heard this, they were afraid of the Philistines.7 Et audierunt Philisthim quod congregati essent filii Israel in Maspha, et ascenderunt principes Philisthinorum ad Israel. Quod cum audissent filii Israel, timuerunt a facie Philisthinorum
They said to Samuel, 'Do not stop cal ing on Yahweh our God to rescue us from the power of thePhilistines.'8 dixeruntque ad Samuel: “ Ne cesses pro nobis clamare ad Dominum Deum nostrum, ut salvet nos de manu Philisthinorum ”.
Samuel took a sucking lamb and presented it as a burnt offering to Yahweh, and he cal ed on Yahwehon behalf of Israel and Yahweh heard him.9 Tulit ergo Samuel agnum lactantem unum et obtulit illum holocaustum integrum Domino; et clamavit Samuel ad Dominum pro Israel, et exaudivit eum Dominus.
While Samuel was in the act of presenting burnt offering, the Philistines joined battle with Israel, butthat day Yahweh thundered violently over the Philistines, threw them into panic and Israel defeated them.10 Factum est autem cum Samuel offerret holocaustum, Philisthim iniere proelium contra Israel. Intonuit autem Dominus fragore magno in die illa super Philisthim et exterruit eos, et caesi sunt a facie Israel.
The men of Israel sal ied out from Mizpah in pursuit of the Philistines and beat them al the way tobelow Beth-Car.11 Egressique viri Israel de Maspha persecuti sunt Philisthaeos et percusserunt eos usque ad locum, qui erat subter Bethchar.
Samuel then took a stone and erected it between Mizpah and the Tooth, and gave it the nameEbenezer, saying, 'Yahweh helped us as far as this.'12 Tulit autem Samuel lapidem unum et posuit eum inter Maspha et inter Sen et vocavit nomen loci illius Abenezer (id est Lapis adiutorii) dixitque: “ Hucusque auxiliatus est nobis Dominus ”.
So the Philistines were humbled and no longer came into Israelite territory; Yahweh oppressed thePhilistines throughout the life of Samuel.13 Et humiliati sunt Philisthim nec apposuerunt ultra ut venirent in terminos Israel. Facta est itaque manus Domini super Philisthaeos cunctis diebus Samuel.
The towns which the Philistines had taken from Israel were given back to Israel, from Ekron al theway to Gath, and Israel freed their territory from the power of the Philistines. There was peace, too, betweenIsrael and the Amorites.14 Et redditae sunt urbes, quas tulerant Philisthim ab Israel, Israeli ab Accaron usque Geth; et terminos earum liberavit Israel de manu Philisthinorum. Eratque pax inter Israel et Amorraeum.
Samuel was judge over Israel throughout his life.15 Iudicabat quoque Samuel Israel cunctis diebus vitae suae
Each year he went on circuit through Bethel and Gilgal and Mizpah and judged Israel in al theseplaces.16 et ibat per singulos annos circumiens Bethel et Galgala et Maspha et iudicabat Israelem in supradictis locis. Revertebaturque in Rama; ibi enim erat domus eius, et ibi iudicabat Israelem. Aedificavit etiam ibi altare Domino.
He would then return to Ramah, since his home was there; there too he judged Israel. And there hebuilt an altar to Yahweh.
