1 The men of Kiriath-Jearim came and, taking up the ark of Yahweh, brought it to the house of Abinadabon the hil , and consecrated his son Eleazar to guard the ark of Yahweh.	1 Les gens de Kiryat-Yéarim vinrent et firent monter l’Arche de Yahvé. Ils l’amenèrent dans la maison d’Abinadab sur la colline, et ils consacrèrent son fils Éléazar comme gardien de l’Arche de Yahvé.
2 From the day when the ark was instal ed at Kiriath-Jearim, a long time went by -- twenty years -- andthe whole House of Israel longed for Yahweh.	2 De nombreuses années s’écoulèrent après que l’Arche fût installée à Kiryat-Yéarim: près de 20 ans. L’ensemble du peuple d’Israël se retourna alors vers Yahvé.
3 Samuel then spoke as follows to the whole House of Israel, 'If you are returning to Yahweh with al yourheart, banish the foreign gods and Astartes which you now have, and set your heart on Yahweh and serve himalone; and he will deliver you from the power of the Philistines.'	3 Samuel déclara au peuple d’Israël tout entier: “Si vraiment vous voulez revenir vers Yahvé, enlevez du milieu de vous les dieux étrangers et les Astartés. Fixez votre cœur sur Yahvé et ne servez plus que lui; alors il vous délivrera de la main des Philistins.”
4 And the Israelites banished the Baals and Astartes and served Yahweh alone.	4 Les Israélites enlevèrent donc les Baals et les Astartés pour ne plus servir que Yahvé.
5 Samuel then said, 'Muster al Israel at Mizpah and I shal plead with Yahweh for you.'	5 Samuel ajouta: “Que tout Israël se rassemble à Mispa: là je ferai pour vous un appel à Yahvé.”
6 So they mustered at Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before Yahweh. They fasted that dayand declared, 'We have sinned against Yahweh.' And Samuel was judge over the Israelites at Mizpah.	6 Ils se rassemblèrent donc à Mispa. Ils puisèrent de l’eau qu’ils versèrent devant Yahvé, et ils jeûnèrent tout le jour, car ils reconnaissaient: “Nous avons péché contre Yahvé.” Et là, à Mispa, Samuel s’imposa comme chef aux Israélites.
7 When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had mustered at Mizpah, the Philistine chiefs marched onIsrael; and when the Israelites heard this, they were afraid of the Philistines.	7 Quand les princes des Philistins apprirent que les Israélites s’étaient rassemblés à Mispa, ils se mirent en route pour combattre Israël. Les Israélites le surent et ils eurent peur des Philistins.
8 They said to Samuel, 'Do not stop cal ing on Yahweh our God to rescue us from the power of thePhilistines.'	8 Ils dirent donc à Samuel: “Ne cesse pas de supplier pour nous Yahvé notre Dieu, pour qu’il nous sauve de la main des Philistins.”
9 Samuel took a sucking lamb and presented it as a burnt offering to Yahweh, and he cal ed on Yahwehon behalf of Israel and Yahweh heard him.	9 Samuel prit alors un jeune agneau et l’offrit en holocauste à Yahvé. Samuel supplia Yahvé pour Israël, et Yahvé l’exauça.
10 While Samuel was in the act of presenting burnt offering, the Philistines joined battle with Israel, butthat day Yahweh thundered violently over the Philistines, threw them into panic and Israel defeated them.	10 Pendant que Samuel offrait le sacrifice, les Philistins s’approchèrent pour combattre Israël, mais ce jour-là Yahvé tonna à grand fracas contre les Philistins. Ils prirent la fuite et furent battus par Israël.
11 The men of Israel sal ied out from Mizpah in pursuit of the Philistines and beat them al the way tobelow Beth-Car.	11 Les Israélites sortirent de Mispa et poursuivirent les Philistins, ils les battirent jusqu’au dessous de Beth-Kar.
12 Samuel then took a stone and erected it between Mizpah and the Tooth, and gave it the nameEbenezer, saying, 'Yahweh helped us as far as this.'	12 Samuel prit alors une pierre qu’il plaça entre Mispa et la Yéchana, il l’appela du nom d’Ében-Ha-Ézer, car, dit-il: “C’est jusqu’ici que Yahvé nous a porté secours.”
13 So the Philistines were humbled and no longer came into Israelite territory; Yahweh oppressed thePhilistines throughout the life of Samuel.	13 Les Philistins avaient été humiliés, ils ne revinrent plus sur le territoire d’Israël. La main de Yahvé pesa sur les Philistins durant toute la vie de Samuel:
14 The towns which the Philistines had taken from Israel were given back to Israel, from Ekron al theway to Gath, and Israel freed their territory from the power of the Philistines. There was peace, too, betweenIsrael and the Amorites.	14 Israël récupéra les villes que les Philistins lui avaient prises depuis Ékron jusqu’à Gat, Israël délivra leur territoire de la main des Philistins. Il y eut alors la paix entre Israël et les Amorites.
15 Samuel was judge over Israel throughout his life.	15 Samuel fut le chef d’Israël durant toute sa vie.
16 Each year he went on circuit through Bethel and Gilgal and Mizpah and judged Israel in al theseplaces.	16 Chaque année il faisait la tournée de Béthel, Guilgal et Mispa, et de là il gouvernait Israël.
17 He would then return to Ramah, since his home was there; there too he judged Israel. And there hebuilt an altar to Yahweh.	17 Ensuite il revenait à Rama où se trouvait sa maison, et là encore il gouvernait Israël. À Rama il éleva un autel à Yahvé.
