1 The ark of Yahweh was in Philistine territory for seven months.	1 L'arca del Signore era stata nel paese dei Filistei sette mesi,
2 The Philistines then cal ed for their priests and diviners and asked, 'What shall we do with the ark ofYahweh? Tel us how to send it back to where it belongs.'	2 quando i Filistei, chiamati i sacerdoti e gl'indovini, dissero: « Che dobbiamo fare dell'arca del Signore? Diteci come dobbiamo rimandarla al suo luogo ». Ed essi risposero:
3 They replied, 'If you send the ark of the God of Israel away, you must certainly not send it away withouta gift; you must pay him a guilt offering. You wil then recover and wil realise why he continual y oppressed you.'	3 « Se voi rimandate l'arca del Dio d'Israele, non la rimandate a vuoto; ma rendetele quel che dovete per il peccato, e allora sarete guariti e saprete perchè la sua mano non si allontani da voi ».
4 They then asked, 'What guilt offering ought we to pay him?' They replied, 'Corresponding to the numberof Philistine chiefs: five golden tumours and five golden rats, since the same plague afflicted your chiefs as therest of you.	4 Dissero i Filistei: « Che dobbiamo noi renderle per il peccato? » Quelli risposero:
5 So make models of your tumours and models of your rats ravaging the territory, and pay honour to theGod of Israel. Then perhaps he wil stop oppressing you, your gods and your country.	5 « Farete cinque ani d'oro e cinque topi d'oro, secondo il numero delle provincie filistee, perchè la piaga tanto per voi che per i vostri satrapi fu la stessa. Fate adunque delle figure dei vostri ani, e delle figure dei topi che han devastata la vostra terra, date gloria al Dio d'Israele, affinchè egli così ritiri la sua mano da voi, dai vostri dèi e dalla vostra terra.
6 Why should you be as stubborn as Egypt and Pharaoh were? After he had brought disasters on them,did they not let the people leave?	6 Perchè volete indurare il vostro cuore, come l'Egitto e Faraone indurarono il loro? Non è forse vero che egli li fece partire dopo essere stato percosso, ed essi se ne andarono?
7 Now, then, take and fit out a new cart, and two milch cows that have never borne the yoke. Thenharness the cows to the cart and take their calves back to the byre.	7 Or dunque fate un carro nuovo e attaccatevi due vacche lattanti, sopra cui non sia stato mai messo il giogo, e chiudete nella stalla i loro vitelli.
8 Then take the ark of Yahweh, place it on the cart, and put the golden objects which you are paying himas guilt offering in a box beside it; and then send it off on its own.	8 Poi, presa l'arca del Signore, la metterete sul carro, e le figure d'oro che le pagate pel peccato, le metterete in una cassetta accanto ad essa, e così la lascerete andare.
9 Watch it; if it goes up the road to its own territory, towards Beth-Shemesh, then he was responsible forthis great harm to us; but if not, we shal know that it was not his hand that struck us, and that this has happenedto us by chance.'	9 E starete a guardare: se salirà la strada dei suoi confini, verso Betsames, è lui che ci ha fatto sì gran male, se no, sapremo che non è la sua mano che ci ha percossi, ma è stato un caso ».
10 The people did this. They took two milch cows and harnessed them to the cart, shutting their calves inthe byre.	10 Quelli adunque fecero così: presero due vacche che allattavano i loro vitelli, le misero al carro e chiusero i vitelli nella stalla:
11 They then put the ark of Yahweh on the cart, with the box and the golden rats and the models of theirtumours.	11 e sul carro vi posero l'arca di Dio e la cassetta che conteneva i topi d'oro e le figure degli ani.
12 The cows made straight for Beth-Shemesh, keeping to the one road, lowing as they went and turningneither to right nor to left. The Philistine chiefs followed them as far as the boundaries of Beth-Shemesh.	12 Or le vacche, infilata direttamente la via che conduce a Betsames, seguitavano la medesima strada, andando avanti e muggendo, senza piegare nè a destra nè a sinistra, e i satrapi dei Filistei andarono loro dietro sino ai confini di Betsames.
13 The people of Beth-Shemesh were reaping the wheat harvest in the plain when they looked up andsaw the ark and went joyful y to meet it.	13 Or i Betsamiti mietevano il grano nella valle, e, alzando gli occhi, videro l'arca, e si rallegrarono come l'ebbero veduta.
14 When the cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth-Shemesh, it stopped. There was a large stonethere, and they cut up the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to Yahweh.	14 Il carro andò nel campo di Giosuè Betsamita e vi si fermò. Vi er lì una gran pietra. Fatto in pezzi il legname del carro, vi misero sopra lev acche in olocausto al Signore;
15 The Levites had taken down the ark of Yahweh and the box with it containing the golden objects andput these on the large stone. That day the people of Beth-Shemesh presented burnt offerings and madesacrifices to Yahweh.	15 e leviti, deposta l'arca, con la cassetta che le era accanto e nella quale eran le figure d'oro, la collocarono sopra quella gran pietra. I Betsamiti offrirono in quel giorno olocausti ed immolarono vittime al Signore;
16 The five chiefs of the Philistines, having witnessed this, went back to Ekron the same day.	16 e i cinque satrapi dei filistei, veduto ciò. ritornarono lo stesso giorno ad Accaron.
17 The golden tumours paid by the Philistines as a guilt offering to Yahweh were as fol ows: one forAshdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for Gath, one for Ekron;	17 Ecco gli ani d'oro che i Filistei offrirono in espiazione al Signore: uno per Azoto, uno per Gaza, uno per Ascalon, uno per Get, uno per Accaron;
18 and golden rats to the number of al the Philistine towns, those of the five chiefs, from fortified townsdown to open villages: stil to this day the large stone in the field of Joshua of Beth-Shemesh, on which they putthe ark of Yahweh, is a witness.	18 poi tanti topi d'oro quante son le città delle cinque provincie dei Filistei, dalla città murata al villaggio senza mura, sino alla grande Abel sulla quale posarono l'arca del Signore, la quale fino a questo giorno è stata nel campo di Giosuè Betsamita.
19 Of the people of Beth-Shemesh the sons of Jeconiah had not rejoiced when they saw the ark ofYahweh, and Yahweh struck down seventy of them. The people mourned because Yahweh had struck them sofiercely.	19 Ma essendo stati percossi degli uomini di Betsames, per aver guardata l'arca del Signore, settanta uomini del popolo, e cinquanta mila della plebe, il popolo pianse, perchè il Signore aveva percossa la plebe con una gran piaga;
20 The people of Beth-Shemesh then said, 'Who can stand his ground before Yahweh, this holy God? Towhom shal he go, so that we are rid of him?'	20 e gli uomini di Betsames esclamarono:« Chi potrà stare al cospetto del Signore,di questo Dio santo? A chi andrà, partendo da noi? »
21 So they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-Jearim, to say, 'The Philistines have sent backthe ark of Yahweh; come down and take it up to your town.'	21 E spedirono dei messia dire agli abitanti di Cariatiarim: « I Filistei hanno riportata l'arca del Signore, scendete e riconducetela nel vostro paese ».
