1 Samuel 6

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 The ark of Yahweh was in Philistine territory for seven months.	1 L'arche de Yahvé fut sept mois dans le territoire des Philistins.
2 The Philistines then cal ed for their priests and diviners and asked, 'What shall we do with the ark ofYahweh? Tel us how to send it back to where it belongs.'	2 Les Philistins en appelèrent aux prêtres et aux devins et demandèrent: "Que devons-nous faire del'arche de Yahvé? Indiquez-nous comment nous la renverrons en son lieu."
3 They replied, 'If you send the ark of the God of Israel away, you must certainly not send it away withouta gift; you must pay him a guilt offering. You wil then recover and wil realise why he continual y oppressed you.'	3 Ils répondirent: "Si vous voulez renvoyer l'arche du Dieu d'Israël, ne la renvoyez pas sans rien,mais payez-lui une réparation. Alors vous guérirez et vous saurez pourquoi sa main ne s'était pas détournée devous."
4 They then asked, 'What guilt offering ought we to pay him?' They replied, 'Corresponding to the numberof Philistine chiefs: five golden tumours and five golden rats, since the same plague afflicted your chiefs as therest of you.	4 Ils demandèrent: "Quelle doit être la réparation que nous lui paierons?" Ils répondirent: "D'après lenombre des princes des Philistins, cinq tumeurs d'or et cinq rats d'or, car ce fut la même plaie pour vous et pourvos princes.
5 So make models of your tumours and models of your rats ravaging the territory, and pay honour to theGod of Israel. Then perhaps he wil stop oppressing you, your gods and your country.	5 Faites des images de vos tumeurs et des images de vos rats, qui ravagent le pays, et rendez gloireau Dieu d'Israël. Peut-être sa main se fera-t-elle plus légère sur vous, vos dieux et votre pays.
6 Why should you be as stubborn as Egypt and Pharaoh were? After he had brought disasters on them,did they not let the people leave?	6 Pourquoi endurciriez-vous votre coeur comme l'ont endurci les Egyptiens et Pharaon? LorsqueDieu les eut malmenés, ne les ont-ils pas laissés partir?
7 Now, then, take and fit out a new cart, and two milch cows that have never borne the yoke. Thenharness the cows to the cart and take their calves back to the byre.	7 Maintenant, prenez et préparez un chariot neuf et deux vaches qui allaitent et n'ont pas porté lejoug: vous attellerez les vaches au chariot et vous ramènerez leurs petits en arrière à l'étable.
8 Then take the ark of Yahweh, place it on the cart, and put the golden objects which you are paying himas guilt offering in a box beside it; and then send it off on its own.	8 Vous prendrez l'arche de Yahvé et vous la placerez sur le chariot. Quant aux objets d'or que vouslui payez comme réparation, vous les mettrez dans un coffre, à côté d'elle, et vous la laisserez partir.
9 Watch it; if it goes up the road to its own territory, towards Beth-Shemesh, then he was responsible forthis great harm to us; but if not, we shal know that it was not his hand that struck us, and that this has happenedto us by chance.'	9 Puis regardez: s'il prend le chemin de son territoire, vers Bet-Shémesh, c'est lui qui nous a causéce grand mal, sinon nous saurons que ce n'est pas sa main qui nous a frappés et que cela nous est arrivé paraccident.
10 The people did this. They took two milch cows and harnessed them to the cart, shutting their calves inthe byre.	10 Ainsi firent les gens: ils prirent deux vaches qui allaitaient et ils les attelèrent au chariot, mais ilretinrent les petits à l'étable.
11 They then put the ark of Yahweh on the cart, with the box and the golden rats and the models of theirtumours.	11 Ils placèrent l'arche de Yahvé sur le chariot, ainsi que le coffre avec les rats d'or et les images deleurs tumeurs.
12 The cows made straight for Beth-Shemesh, keeping to the one road, lowing as they went and turningneither to right nor to left. The Philistine chiefs followed them as far as the boundaries of Beth-Shemesh.	12 Les vaches prirent tout droit la route de Bet-Shémesh et gardèrent le même chemin, ellesmeuglaient en marchant, sans dévier ni à droite ni à gauche. Les princes des Philistins les suivirent jusqu'auxconfins de Bet-Shémesh.
13 The people of Beth-Shemesh were reaping the wheat harvest in the plain when they looked up andsaw the ark and went joyful y to meet it.	13 Les gens de Bet-Shémesh faisaient la moisson des blés dans la plaine. Levant les yeux, ils virentl'arche et ils allèrent avec joie à sa rencontre.
14 When the cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth-Shemesh, it stopped. There was a large stonethere, and they cut up the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to Yahweh.	14 Lorsque le chariot fut arrivé au champ de Josué de Bet-Shémesh, il s'y arrêta. Il y avait là unegrande pierre. On fendit le bois du chariot et on offrit les vaches en holocauste à Yahvé.
15 The Levites had taken down the ark of Yahweh and the box with it containing the golden objects andput these on the large stone. That day the people of Beth-Shemesh presented burnt offerings and madesacrifices to Yahweh.	15 Les lévites avaient descendu l'arche de Yahvé et le coffre qui était près d'elle et qui contenait lesobjets d'or, et ils avaient déposé le tout sur la grande pierre. Les gens de Bet-Shémesh offrirent ce jour-là desholocaustes et firent des sacrifices à Yahvé.
16 The five chiefs of the Philistines, having witnessed this, went back to Ekron the same day.	16 Quand les cinq princes des Philistins eurent vu cela, ils revinrent à Eqrôn, le même jour.
17 The golden tumours paid by the Philistines as a guilt offering to Yahweh were as fol ows: one forAshdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for Gath, one for Ekron;	17 Voici les tumeurs d'or que les Philistins payèrent en réparation à Yahvé: pour Ashdod une, pourGaza une, pour Ashqelôn une, pour Gat une, pour Eqrôn une.
18 and golden rats to the number of al the Philistine towns, those of the five chiefs, from fortified townsdown to open villages: stil to this day the large stone in the field of Joshua of Beth-Shemesh, on which they putthe ark of Yahweh, is a witness.	18 Et des rats d'or, autant que toutes les villes des Philistins, celles des cinq princes, depuis les villesfortes jusqu'aux villages ouverts. Témoin la grande pierre sur laquelle on déposa l'arche de Yahvé, et qui estencore aujourd'hui dans le champ de Josué de Bet-Shémesh.
19 Of the people of Beth-Shemesh the sons of Jeconiah had not rejoiced when they saw the ark ofYahweh, and Yahweh struck down seventy of them. The people mourned because Yahweh had struck them sofiercely.	19 Les fils de Yekonya, parmi les gens de Bet-Shémesh, ne s'étaient pas réjouis lorsqu'ils avaient vul'arche de Yahvé, et Yahvé frappa 70 hommes d'entre eux. Et le peuple fut en deuil, parce que Yahvé l'avaitdurement frappé.
20 The people of Beth-Shemesh then said, 'Who can stand his ground before Yahweh, this holy God? Towhom shal he go, so that we are rid of him?'	20 Alors les gens de Bet-Shémesh dirent: "Qui pourrait tenir en face de Yahvé, le Dieu Saint? Chezqui montera-t-il loin de nous?"
21 So they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-Jearim, to say, 'The Philistines have sent backthe ark of Yahweh; come down and take it up to your town.'	21 Ils envoyèrent des messagers aux habitants de Qiryat-Yéarim, avec ces mots: "Les Philistins ontrendu l'arche de Yahvé. Descendez et faites-la monter chez vous."
