1 When the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.	1 - I Filistei dunque s'impadronirono dell'arca di Dio e la trasportarono dalla Pietra del Soccorso in Azoto;
2 Taking the ark of God, the Philistines put it in the temple of Dagon, setting it down beside Dagon.	2 La presero, la introdussero nel tempio di Dagon e la collocarono accanto a Dagon.
3 When the people of Ashdod got up the fol owing morning and went to the temple of Dagon, there layDagon face down on the ground before the ark of Yahweh. They picked Dagon up and put him back in his place.	3 Ma il mattino seguente gli abitanti di Azoto alzatisi di buon'ora, trovarono Dagon caduto con la faccia a terra, dinanzi all'Arca del Signore. Presero allora Dagon e lo rimisero al suo posto.
4 But when they got up on the fol owing morning, there lay Dagon face down on the ground before the arkof Yahweh, and Dagon's head and two hands lay severed on the threshold; only the trunk of Dagon was left inits place.	4 Ma di nuovo al mattino del dì successivo, levatisi, trovarono Dagon che giaceva con la faccia a terra dinanzi all'arca del Signore e la testa e ambedue le mani di Dagon giacevano mozzate sulla soglia [del tempio],
5 This is why the priests of Dagon and the people frequenting Dagon's temple never step on Dagon'sthreshold in Ashdod, even today.	5 mentre il solo tronco di Dagon era rimasto al suo posto. Per questa ragione, fino al giorno d'oggi i sacerdoti di Dagon e tutti quelli che entrano nel suo tempio non pongono il piede sulla soglia di Dagon in Azoto.
6 Yahweh oppressed the people of Ashdod; he ravaged them and afflicted them with tumours -- Ashdodand its territory. When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening they said,	6 Poi la mano del Signore si aggravò sugli abitanti di Azoto e portò fra loro la desolazione e colpì nelle parti più riposte del corpo il popolo di Azoto e dei dintorni. Di più le ville e i campi di quella regione parvero ribollire e nacquero topi e la città fu sottosopra per la grande mortalità.
7 'The ark of the God of Israel must not stay here with us, for he is oppressing us and our god Dagon.'	7 Quei di Azoto, vedendo tale piaga, dissero: «Non resti presso di noi l'arca del Signore Dio di Israele: troppo pesante è la mano di lui su di noi e su Dagon, nostro dio».
8 So they summoned al the Philistine chiefs to them, and said, 'What shal we do with the ark of the Godof Israel?' They decided, 'The ark of the God of Israel shal be taken away to Gath.' So they took the ark of theGod of Israel to Gath.	8 Mandarono quindi a convocare presso di loro tutti i satrapi dei Filistei e chiesero: «Che faremo dell'arca del Dio di Israele?». Risposero quelli di Get: «Si conduca attorno l'arca del Dio di Israele». E la condussero attorno.
9 But after they had taken it there, Yahweh oppressed that town and a great panic broke out; afflicting thepeople of the town from highest to lowest, he brought them out in tumours too.	9 Ora mentre la menavano in giro, la mano del Signore colpiva le singole città con una grande mortalità e percoteva gli abitanti di ciascuna città dal piccolo al grande; i loro intestini uscivan fuori e si imputridivano. E quei di Get, dopo aver tenuto consiglio, si fecero dei sedili di pelle.
10 They then sent the ark of God to Ekron, but when it came to Ekron the Ekronites shouted, 'They havebrought me the ark of the God of Israel to kil me and my people!'	10 Mandarono quindi l'arca del Signore in Accaron. E quando l'arca giunse in Accaron, gli abitanti cominciarono a gridare dicendo: «Hanno condotto a noi l'arca del Dio d'Israele per far morire noi e il nostro popolo».
11 They summoned al the Philistine chiefs and said, 'Send the ark of the God of Israel away; let it goback to where it belongs and not kill me and my people' -- for there was mortal panic throughout the town; Godwas oppressing them.	11 Inviarono pertanto a convocare tutti i satrapi dei Filistei, i quali dissero: «Rimandate l'arca del Dio d'Israele; torni essa al suo posto, e non uccida noi e il nostro popolo».
12 The people who did not die were afflicted with tumours, and the wailing from the town rose to the sky.	12 Un terrore di morte infatti si diffondeva in ogni città e la mano di Dio s'aggravava fortemente; e anche quelli stessi che non erano morti, vennero percossi nelle parti più riposte del corpo e le grida [di lamento] di ciascuna città salivano sino al cielo.
