1 Now the men of Ephraim said to Gideon, 'What do you mean by treating us like this, not summoning uswhen you went to fight Midian?' And they reproached him bitterly.	1 Gli uomini di Efraim dissero a Gedeone: « Che hai inteso di fare col non invitarci andando a combattere contro Madian? » E contesero aspramente con lui, quasi fino alla violenza.
2 He replied, 'What have I achieved, compared with you? Is not the gleaning of Ephraim's grapes betterthan the vintage of Abiezer?	2 Ma egli rispose loro: « E che ho potuto fare io di simile a quello che voi avete fatto? Non vai forse più un grappolo d'Efraim, che le vendemmie di Abiezer?
3 God delivered Oreb and Zeeb, the chieftains of Midian, into your power. What was I able to do, incomparison with what you have done?' At these words, their anger with him died down.	3 Il Signore vi ha dato nelle mani i principi di Madian, Oreb e Zeb: ed io che ho potuto fare di simile a quello che voi avete fatto? » Dette queste parole, si calmò lo spirito da cui erano animati contro di lui.
4 Gideon reached the Jordan and crossed it, but he and his three hundred companions were exhaustedwith the pursuit.	4 Or Gedeone, giunto al Giordano, lo passò con i trecento uomini che erano con lui; ma per la stanchezza non potevano inseguire i fuggiaschi.
5 So he said to the men of Succoth, 'Please give my fol owers some loaves of bread, since they areexhausted, and I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna the kings of Midian.'	5 Allora egli disse alla gente di Soccot: « Date, vi prego, del pane agli uomini che son con me, chè sono molto stanchi, affinchè possiamo inseguire Zebee e Salmana, re di Madian ».
6 The headmen of Succoth replied, 'Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your grasp, that weshould give bread to your army?'	6 Ma i principi di Soccot risposero: « Hai forse già in mano i pugni di Zebee e di Salmana per domandarci dei viveri pel tuo esercito? ».
7 'Very wel ,' retorted Gideon, 'when Yahweh has put Zebah and Zalmunna into my power, I shal tearyour flesh off with desert-thorn and thistles.'	7 Gedeone rispose loro: « Ebbene, quando il Signore avrà dato nelle mie mani Zebee e Salmana, io vi farò lacerar le carni colle spine e coi triboli del deserto ».
8 From there he went up to Penuel and asked the men of Penuel the same thing; they replied as those ofSuccoth had done.	8 Poi di là salito a Fanuel, parlò nella stessa guisa agli uomini di quel luogo, i quali gli risposero come quelli di Soccot.
9 And to those of Penuel he made a similar retort, 'When I return victorious, I shal destroy this tower.'	9 E a loro disse: « Quando in pace tornerò dalla vittoria, distruggerò questa torre ».
10 Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their army, about fifteen thousand men, al that was left ofthe entire army of the sons of the East. Of men bearing arms, a hundred and twenty thousand had fal en.	10 Intanto Zebee e Salmana prendevano riposo con tutta la loro gente, coi quindici mila rimasti di tutte le schiere dei popoli d'oriente; gli altri centoventimila combattenti che menavan la spada, eran già stati fatti a pezzi.
11 Gideon approached them by the tent-dwellers' route, east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and attacked thearmy when it thought itself in safety.	11 Or Gedeone, salendo per la via di coloro che abitavano sot­to le tende, dalla parte orientale di Nobe e di Iegbaa, percosse il campo dei nemici che se ne stavano sicuri e senza alcun sospet­to.
12 Zebah and Zalmunna fled. He pursued them; he took the two kings of Midian prisoner -- Zebah andZalmunna -- and the whole army he routed in panic.	12 Zebee e Salmana fuggirono; ma Gedeone li inseguì e li prese dopo avere messo in scompiglio tutto il loro esercito.
13 After the battle Gideon came back by the Ascent of Heres.	13 Tornando dalla battaglia prima del levar del sole, Gedeo­ne,
14 He caught a young man, one of the people of Succoth, and questioned him, and the latter wrote downthe names of the headmen and elders of Succoth for him -- seventy-seven men.	14 preso un fanciullo della gente di Soccot, gli domandò i nomi dei principi e dei seniori di Soccot, e prese nota di settantasette persone.
15 Gideon son of Joash then went to the people of Succoth and said, 'Here you see Zebah andZalmunna, about whom you taunted me and said, "Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your grasp,that we should give bread to your exhausted troops?" '	15 Andato poi a Soccot, disse loro: « Eccovi Zebee e Salmana, riguardo ai quali mi scherniste col dire: I pugni di Zebee e di Salmana son già nelle tue mani, da domandarci dei viveri per la tua gente stanca e sfinita? »
16 He then seized the elders of the town and, taking desert-thorn and thistles, tore the men of Succoth topieces.	16 Presi poi i seniori della città e quegli uomini di Soccot, con spine del deserto e triboli li fece lacerare e sbranare.
17 He destroyed the tower of Penuel and slaughtered the townsmen.	17 Abbattè pure la torre di Fanuel, dopo avere uccisi gli abitanti della città.
18 He then said to Zebah and Zalmunna, 'The men you kil ed at Tabor -- what were they like?' Theyreplied, 'They looked like you. Every one of them carried himself like the son of a king.'	18 E disse a Zebee e a Salmana: « Come erano quegli uomini che voi uccideste sul Tabor? » Risposero: « Somigliavano a te, e uno di essi pareva figlio di re ».
19 Gideon replied, 'They were my brothers, the sons of my own mother; as Yahweh lives, if you hadspared their lives I would not kil you.'	19 Gedeone disse loro: « Erano miei fratelli, figli di mia madre. Viva il Signore; se voi aveste lasciato loro la vita, io non vi ucciderei ».
20 To Jether his eldest son he said, 'Stand up and kil them!' But the boy did not draw his sword; he darednot; he was stil only a lad.	20 E disse a Ieter suo primogenito: « Levati e uccidili ». Ma egli non trasse fuori la spada, perchè aveva paura, essendo ancor giovane.
21 Zebah and Zalmunna then said, 'Stand up yourself, and strike us down; for as a man is, so is hisstrength.' Then Gideon stood up and kil ed Zebah and Zalmunna; and he took the crescents from round theircamels' necks.	21 Allora Zebee e Salmana dissero: « Levati su tu stesso e ammazzaci, chè la forza è proporzionata all'età ». Gedeone si levò e uccise Zebee e Salmana, e prese gli ornamenti e le borchie con cui suole essere ornato il collo dei cammelli reali.
22 The men of Israel said to Gideon, 'Rule over us, you, your son and your grandson, since you haverescued us from the power of Midian.'	22 Or tutti gli uomini d'Israele dissero a Gedeone: « Sii tu il nostro signore, tu, il tuo figlio e il figlio del tuo figlio, giacché ci hai liberati dalla mano di Madian ».
23 But Gideon replied, 'I wil not rule you, neither wil my son. Yahweh shal rule you.'	23 E Gedeone: « Non io sarò il vostro signore, nè lo sarà il mio figlio; ma soltanto il Signore comanderà a voi ».
24 Gideon went on, however, 'Let me make you one request. Each of you give me one ring out of hisbooty' -- for the vanquished had had gold rings, being Ishmaelites.	24 Gedeone disse loro: « Io vi chiedo soltanto che mi diate gli orecchini che avete predati ». Gli Ismaeliti solevano portare orecchini d'oro.
25 'We shal give them gladly,' they replied. So he spread out his cloak, and on it each of them threw aring from his booty.	25 Ed essi risposero: « Te li daremo molto volentieri ». E steso per terra un mantello, vi gettarono sopra gli orecchini predati.
26 The weight of the gold rings which he had asked for amounted to seventeen hundred shekels of gold,besides the crescents and the earrings and purple garments worn by the kings of Midian, and besides the col arsround their camels' necks.	26 Il peso degli orecchini richiesti fu di mille settecento sicli d'oro, senza gli ornamenti, i monili, le vesti di porpora, che solevano usare i re di Madian, e senza i collari d'oro dei cammelli.
27 From this Gideon made an ephod and set it up in his town, in Ophrah. All Israel, fol owing his example,prostituted themselves to it, and it was a snare for Gideon and his family.	27 Gedeone ne fece un Efod, e lo pose nella sua città di Efra. E tutto Israele peccò a causa di questo Efod, che divenne una rovina per Gedeone e per tutta la sua casa.
28 Thus Midian was humbled before the Israelites. He did not raise his head again, and the country hadpeace for forty years, as long as Gideon lived.	28 Essendo stati così umiliati dinanzi ai figli d'Israele, i Madianiti non poteron più alzare la testa, e il paese ebbe riposo per quarantanni nei quali governò Gedeone.
29 So Jerubbaal son of Joash went to live at home.	29 Ierobaal figlio di Gioas se ne tornò ad abitare in casa sua.
30 Gideon had seventy sons begotten by him, for he had many wives.	30 Egli ebbe settanta figli nati da lui e dalle molte mogli che aveva.
31 His concubine, who lived in Shechem, also bore him a son, to whom he gave the name Abimelech.	31 La sua concubina che aveva in Sichem gli partorì un figlio chiamato Abimelec.
32 Gideon son of Joash died after a happy old age and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, atOphrah of Abiezer.	32 E Gedeone figlio di Gioas morì in prospera vecchiaia, e fu sepolto nel sepolcro di Gioas suo padre, in Etra della famiglia di Ezri.
33 After Gideon's death, the people of Israel again began to prostitute themselves to the Baals, takingBaal-Berith for their god.	33 Ma dopo la morte di Gedeone i figli d'Israele traviarono e fornicarono con Baal. Fecero alleanza con Baal, lo scelsero come loro dio,
34 The Israelites no longer remembered Yahweh their God, who had rescued them from all the enemiesround them.	34 senza ricordarsi del Signore Dio loro, che li aveva liberati dalle mani di tutti i nemici d'ogni intorno.
35 And to the family of Jerubbaal -- Gideon -- they showed no faithful gratitude for al the good which ithad done for Israel.	35 Essi non ebbero gratitudine alcuna verso la famiglia di Ierobaal, o Gedeone, in proporzione del grande bene che egli aveva fatto a Israele.
