1 Now the men of Ephraim said to Gideon, 'What do you mean by treating us like this, not summoning uswhen you went to fight Midian?' And they reproached him bitterly.	1 E GLI uomini di Efraim gli dissero: Che cosa è questo che tu ci hai fatto, di non averci chiamati, quando tu sei andato a combattere contro a Madian? E contesero aspramente con lui.
2 He replied, 'What have I achieved, compared with you? Is not the gleaning of Ephraim's grapes betterthan the vintage of Abiezer?	2 Ma egli disse loro: Che ho io ora fatto al par di voi? il raspollar d’Efraim non vale egli meglio che la vendemmia d’Abiezer?
3 God delivered Oreb and Zeeb, the chieftains of Midian, into your power. What was I able to do, incomparison with what you have done?' At these words, their anger with him died down.	3 Iddio vi ha dati i Capi de’ Madianiti, Oreb, e Zeeb, nelle mani; e che ho io potuto fare al par di voi? Allora, dopo ch’ebbe loro così parlato, il lor cruccio contro a lui si acquetò
4 Gideon reached the Jordan and crossed it, but he and his three hundred companions were exhaustedwith the pursuit.	4 Or Gedeone arrivò al Giordano, e, passandolo con que’ trecent’uomini ch’erano con lui, i quali stanchi come erano, pur perseguitavano i Madianiti,
5 So he said to the men of Succoth, 'Please give my fol owers some loaves of bread, since they areexhausted, and I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna the kings of Midian.'	5 disse a que’ di Succot: Deh! date alcuni pezzi di pane alla gente che è al mio seguito; perciocchè sono stanchi, e io perseguito Zeba, e Salmunna, re di Madian.
6 The headmen of Succoth replied, 'Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your grasp, that weshould give bread to your army?'	6 Ma i principali di Succot risposero: Hai tu già in mano le palme di Zeba e di Salmunna, che noi diamo del pane al tuo esercito?
7 'Very wel ,' retorted Gideon, 'when Yahweh has put Zebah and Zalmunna into my power, I shal tearyour flesh off with desert-thorn and thistles.'	7 E Gedeone rispose: Perciò, quando il Signore mi avrà dato nelle mani Zeba e Salmunna, io vi sminuzzerò le carni con delle spine del deserto, e con triboli.
8 From there he went up to Penuel and asked the men of Penuel the same thing; they replied as those ofSuccoth had done.	8 Poi di là egli salì in Penuel, e parlò a que’ di Penuel nella medesima maniera; ed essi gli risposero come que’ di Succot aveano risposto.
9 And to those of Penuel he made a similar retort, 'When I return victorious, I shal destroy this tower.'	9 Ed egli disse parimente a que’ di Penuel: Quando io ritornerò in pace, io disfarò questa torre.
10 Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their army, about fifteen thousand men, al that was left ofthe entire army of the sons of the East. Of men bearing arms, a hundred and twenty thousand had fal en.	10 Or Zeba e Salmunna, erano in Carcor, co’ lor campi d’intorno a quindicimila uomini, ch’erano tutti quelli ch’erano rimasti di tutto il campo degli Orientali; e i morti erano cenventimila uomini, che potevano trar la spada.
11 Gideon approached them by the tent-dwellers' route, east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and attacked thearmy when it thought itself in safety.	11 E Gedeone salì traendo al paese di coloro che abitano in padiglioni, dal lato orientale di Noba, e di Iogbea; e percosse il campo, il qual se ne stava in sicurtà.
12 Zebah and Zalmunna fled. He pursued them; he took the two kings of Midian prisoner -- Zebah andZalmunna -- and the whole army he routed in panic.	12 E Zeba, e Salmunna, fuggirono; ma egli li perseguitò, e prese i due re di Madian, Zeba, e Salmunna, e mise in rotta tutto il campo.
13 After the battle Gideon came back by the Ascent of Heres.	13 Poi Gedeone, figliuolo di Ioas, se ne ritornò dalla battaglia, dalla salita di Heres.
14 He caught a young man, one of the people of Succoth, and questioned him, and the latter wrote downthe names of the headmen and elders of Succoth for him -- seventy-seven men.	14 E prese un fanciullo della gente di Succot, e lo domandò; ed egli gli descrisse i principali e gli Anziani di Succot, ch’erano settantasette uomini.
15 Gideon son of Joash then went to the people of Succoth and said, 'Here you see Zebah andZalmunna, about whom you taunted me and said, "Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your grasp,that we should give bread to your exhausted troops?" '	15 Poi Gedeone venne agli uomini di Succot, e disse: Ecco Zeba, e Salmunna, de’ quali per ischerno voi mi diceste: Hai tu già nelle mani le palme di Zeba, e di Salmunna, che noi diamo del pane alla tua gente stanca?
16 He then seized the elders of the town and, taking desert-thorn and thistles, tore the men of Succoth topieces.	16 Ed egli prese gli Anziani della città, e delle spine del deserto, e de’ triboli, e con essi castigò quegli uomini di Succot.
17 He destroyed the tower of Penuel and slaughtered the townsmen.	17 Disfece ancora la torre di Penuel, e uccise gli uomini della città
18 He then said to Zebah and Zalmunna, 'The men you kil ed at Tabor -- what were they like?' Theyreplied, 'They looked like you. Every one of them carried himself like the son of a king.'	18 Poi disse a Zeba, ed a Salmunna: Come erano quegli uomini che voi uccideste in Tabor? Ed essi risposero: Come tu appunto; ciascuno di essi pareva nel sembiante un figliuolo di re.
19 Gideon replied, 'They were my brothers, the sons of my own mother; as Yahweh lives, if you hadspared their lives I would not kil you.'	19 Ed egli disse loro: Essi erano miei fratelli, figliuoli di mia madre; come il Signore vive, se voi aveste loro salvata la vita, io non vi ucciderei.
20 To Jether his eldest son he said, 'Stand up and kil them!' But the boy did not draw his sword; he darednot; he was stil only a lad.	20 Poi disse a Ieter, suo primogenito: Levati, uccidili. Ma il fanciullo non trasse fuori la sua spada; perciocchè avea paura; conciossiachè egli fosse ancor giovanetto.
21 Zebah and Zalmunna then said, 'Stand up yourself, and strike us down; for as a man is, so is hisstrength.' Then Gideon stood up and kil ed Zebah and Zalmunna; and he took the crescents from round theircamels' necks.	21 E Zeba, e Salmunna, dissero: Levati su tu, e avventati sopra noi; perciocchè quale è l’uomo tale è la sua forza. Gedeone adunque si levò, e uccise Zeba, e Salmunna, e prese le borchie che i lor cammelli aveano al collo
22 The men of Israel said to Gideon, 'Rule over us, you, your son and your grandson, since you haverescued us from the power of Midian.'	22 E gl’Israeliti dissero a Gedeone: Signoreggia sopra noi, tu, e il tuo figliuolo, e il figliuolo del tuo figliuolo; conciossiachè tu ci abbi salvati dalla mano de’ Madianiti.
23 But Gideon replied, 'I wil not rule you, neither wil my son. Yahweh shal rule you.'	23 Ma Gedeone disse loro: Nè io, nè il mio figliuolo, signoreggeremo sopra voi; il Signore signoreggerà sopra voi.
24 Gideon went on, however, 'Let me make you one request. Each of you give me one ring out of hisbooty' -- for the vanquished had had gold rings, being Ishmaelites.	24 Poi Gedeone disse loro: Io vi farò una richiesta, che ciascun di voi mi dia il monile ch’egli ha predato; perciocchè coloro aveano de’ monili d’oro, perchè erano Ismaeliti.
25 'We shal give them gladly,' they replied. So he spread out his cloak, and on it each of them threw aring from his booty.	25 Ed essi dissero: Noi del tutto te li daremo. Steso adunque un ammanto, ciascuno vi gittò il monile ch’egli aveva predato.
26 The weight of the gold rings which he had asked for amounted to seventeen hundred shekels of gold,besides the crescents and the earrings and purple garments worn by the kings of Midian, and besides the col arsround their camels' necks.	26 E il peso dei monili d’oro, che Gedeone avea chiesti, fu di mille settecento sicli d’oro; oltre alle borchie, e alle collane, e a’ vestimenti di porpora, che i re di Madian aveano indosso; e oltre a’ collari che i cammelli loro aveano al collo.
27 From this Gideon made an ephod and set it up in his town, in Ophrah. All Israel, fol owing his example,prostituted themselves to it, and it was a snare for Gideon and his family.	27 E Gedeone fece di quell’oro un Efod, e lo pose in Ofra, sua città; e tutto Israele fornicò quivi dietro ad esso; e ciò fu in laccio a Gedeone e alla sua casa.
28 Thus Midian was humbled before the Israelites. He did not raise his head again, and the country hadpeace for forty years, as long as Gideon lived.	28 Così Madian fu depresso davanti a’ figliuoli d’Israle, e non alzò più il capo; e il paese ebbe riposo per quarant’anni, a’ dì di Gedeone
29 So Jerubbaal son of Joash went to live at home.	29 E Ierubbaal, figliuolo di Ioas, se ne andò, e dimorò in casa sua.
30 Gideon had seventy sons begotten by him, for he had many wives.	30 Or Gedeone ebbe settanta figliuoli, ch’erano usciti della sua anca; conciossiachè egli avesse molte mogli.
31 His concubine, who lived in Shechem, also bore him a son, to whom he gave the name Abimelech.	31 E la sua concubina, ch’era in Sichem, gli partorì anch’essa un figliuolo, al quale egli pose nome Abimelec.
32 Gideon son of Joash died after a happy old age and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, atOphrah of Abiezer.	32 Poi Gedeone, figliolo di Ioas, morì in buona vecchiezza, e fu seppellito nella sepoltura di Ioas, suo padre, in Ofra degli Abiezeriti.
33 After Gideon's death, the people of Israel again began to prostitute themselves to the Baals, takingBaal-Berith for their god.	33 E, dopo che Gedeone fu morto, i figliuoli d’Israele tornarono a fornicare dietro a’ Baali, e si costituirono Baal-berit per dio.
34 The Israelites no longer remembered Yahweh their God, who had rescued them from all the enemiesround them.	34 E non si ricordarono del Signore Iddio loro, il quale li avea riscossi dalle mani di tutti i lor nemici d’ogn’intorno;
35 And to the family of Jerubbaal -- Gideon -- they showed no faithful gratitude for al the good which ithad done for Israel.	35 e non usarono benignità inverso la casa di Ierubbaal, cioè, di Gedeone, secondo tutto il bene ch’egli avea operato inverso Israele
