1 Now the men of Ephraim said to Gideon, 'What do you mean by treating us like this, not summoning uswhen you went to fight Midian?' And they reproached him bitterly.	1 - Gli uomini di Efraim gli dissero: «Cosa hai inteso fare col non chiamarci quando movesti a combattere contro Madian?», e mettendosi a litigare violentemente, quasi gli usavano violenza.
2 He replied, 'What have I achieved, compared with you? Is not the gleaning of Ephraim's grapes betterthan the vintage of Abiezer?	2 Egli rispose loro: «Che cosa potea fare di simile a quello che voi avete fatto? Non vale di più un grappolo di Efraim, che le vendemmie di Abiezer?
3 God delivered Oreb and Zeeb, the chieftains of Midian, into your power. What was I able to do, incomparison with what you have done?' At these words, their anger with him died down.	3 Il Signore ha dato nelle vostre mani i principi di Madian, Oreb e Zeb. Che cosa potea io fare di simile a quello che voi avete fatto?». Avendo ciò detto, si acquietò il loro animo, che s'era sdegnato contro di lui.
4 Gideon reached the Jordan and crossed it, but he and his three hundred companions were exhaustedwith the pursuit.	4 Giunto Gedeone al Giordano, lo passò coi trecento uomini che eran con lui e che per la stanchezza non potevano inseguire i fuggiaschi.
5 So he said to the men of Succoth, 'Please give my fol owers some loaves of bread, since they areexhausted, and I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna the kings of Midian.'	5 Disse allora a quei di Soccot: «Date, ve ne prego, del pane alla gente che è con me poichè sono assai stanchi, e così potremo inseguire Zebee e Salmana re di Madian».
6 The headmen of Succoth replied, 'Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your grasp, that weshould give bread to your army?'	6 Ma i capi di Soccot risposero: «Tieni tu forse già nelle tue mani le palme delle mani di Zebee e di Salmana, e perciò domandi che diamo pane al tuo esercito?».
7 'Very wel ,' retorted Gideon, 'when Yahweh has put Zebah and Zalmunna into my power, I shal tearyour flesh off with desert-thorn and thistles.'	7 Al che egli soggiunse: «Ebbene, quando il Signore darà Zebee e Salmana nelle mie mani io strazierò le vostre carni colle spine e coi triboli del deserto».
8 From there he went up to Penuel and asked the men of Penuel the same thing; they replied as those ofSuccoth had done.	8 E salendo quindi a Fanuel parlò allo stesso modo agli uomini di quella località; ed avendogli essi risposto alla stessa guisa di quei di Soccot,
9 And to those of Penuel he made a similar retort, 'When I return victorious, I shal destroy this tower.'	9 egli disse: «Quando me ne ritornerò vittorioso in pace, io distruggerò questa torre».
10 Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their army, about fifteen thousand men, al that was left ofthe entire army of the sons of the East. Of men bearing arms, a hundred and twenty thousand had fal en.	10 Zebee e Salmana se ne stavano riposando con tutto il loro esercito. Erano rimasti quindicimila uomini di tutte le schiere dei popoli orientali, perchè erano stati uccisi centoventimila combattenti, che portavano la spada.
11 Gideon approached them by the tent-dwellers' route, east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and attacked thearmy when it thought itself in safety.	11 Ascendendo Gedeone per la stessa via di quelli che abitavano nelle tende, ad oriente di Nobe e di Iegbaa, assalì l'esercito nemico, che si credeva sicuro e non sospettava sinistro alcuno.
12 Zebah and Zalmunna fled. He pursued them; he took the two kings of Midian prisoner -- Zebah andZalmunna -- and the whole army he routed in panic.	12 Fuggirono Zebee e Salmana, ma Gedeone li inseguì e li prese, gettando lo scompiglio in tutto il loro esercito.
13 After the battle Gideon came back by the Ascent of Heres.	13 Nel ritornarsene dalla guerra prima del levar del sole,
14 He caught a young man, one of the people of Succoth, and questioned him, and the latter wrote downthe names of the headmen and elders of Succoth for him -- seventy-seven men.	14 prese un fanciullo degli uomini di Soccot e, richiestolo del nome dei principi e dei seniori della città, prese nota di settantasette uomini.
15 Gideon son of Joash then went to the people of Succoth and said, 'Here you see Zebah andZalmunna, about whom you taunted me and said, "Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your grasp,that we should give bread to your exhausted troops?" '	15 Venne a Soccot e disse a quegli abitanti: «Ecco Zebee e Salmana a proposito dei quali voi mi avete insultato, col dire: - Tieni tu forse già nelle tue mani le mani di Zebee e di Salmana e perciò domandi che diamo del pane agli uomini che sono stanchi e vengono meno? -».
16 He then seized the elders of the town and, taking desert-thorn and thistles, tore the men of Succoth topieces.	16 Presi adunque gli anziani della città, li flagellò con le spine del deserto e coi triboli e sterminò gli uomini di Soccot.
17 He destroyed the tower of Penuel and slaughtered the townsmen.	17 Abbattè pure la torre di Fanuel e uccise gli abitanti della città.
18 He then said to Zebah and Zalmunna, 'The men you kil ed at Tabor -- what were they like?' Theyreplied, 'They looked like you. Every one of them carried himself like the son of a king.'	18 Disse quindi a Zebee e a Salmana: «Com'erano gli uomini che voi avete uccisi sul Tabor?». E avendo essi risposto: «Somigliavano a te e uno di loro pareva quasi un figlio di re»,
19 Gideon replied, 'They were my brothers, the sons of my own mother; as Yahweh lives, if you hadspared their lives I would not kil you.'	19 egli soggiunse: «Erano miei fratelli, figli di mia madre. Viva il Signore se voi li aveste risparmiati, ora non vi ucciderei».
20 To Jether his eldest son he said, 'Stand up and kil them!' But the boy did not draw his sword; he darednot; he was stil only a lad.	20 Poi voltosi a Ieter, suo primogenito disse: «Levati e uccidili». Ma non avendo egli estratto la spada, perchè essendo ancora un giovinetto aveva paura,
21 Zebah and Zalmunna then said, 'Stand up yourself, and strike us down; for as a man is, so is hisstrength.' Then Gideon stood up and kil ed Zebah and Zalmunna; and he took the crescents from round theircamels' necks.	21 Zebee e Salmana dissero: «Levati su tu stesso e avventati sopra di noi, poichè la forza dell'uomo è in proporzione dell'età». Gedeone si levò, uccise Zebee e Salmana e prese gli ornamenti e le borchie, con cui si suole adornare il collo dei cammelli dei re.
22 The men of Israel said to Gideon, 'Rule over us, you, your son and your grandson, since you haverescued us from the power of Midian.'	22 Tutti gli uomini d'Israele dissero a Gedeone: «Domina sopra di noi tu, il figliuolo tuo e il figlio del figliuol tuo, poichè ci hai liberati dalle mani di Madian».
23 But Gideon replied, 'I wil not rule you, neither wil my son. Yahweh shal rule you.'	23 Al che egli rispose: «Io non dominerò sopra di voi, nè dominerà sopra di voi il mio figliuolo: ma dominerà sopra di voi il Signore».
24 Gideon went on, however, 'Let me make you one request. Each of you give me one ring out of hisbooty' -- for the vanquished had had gold rings, being Ishmaelites.	24 Poi soggiunse: «Domando una sol cosa da voi: datemi tutti gli orecchini che sono nel vostro bottino». Gli Ismaeliti infatti erano soliti portare orecchini d'oro.
25 'We shal give them gladly,' they replied. So he spread out his cloak, and on it each of them threw aring from his booty.	25 Ed essi risposero: «Te li daremo assai volentieri». E avendo steso sul suolo un mantello, vi gettarono tutti gli orecchini della preda.
26 The weight of the gold rings which he had asked for amounted to seventeen hundred shekels of gold,besides the crescents and the earrings and purple garments worn by the kings of Midian, and besides the col arsround their camels' necks.	26 Il peso degli orecchini ch'egli aveva chiesto fu di millesettecento sicli d'oro, senza contare gli ornamenti, i monili e la veste di porpora, di cui faceano uso i re di Madian, e senza contare le collane d'oro dei cammelli.
27 From this Gideon made an ephod and set it up in his town, in Ophrah. All Israel, fol owing his example,prostituted themselves to it, and it was a snare for Gideon and his family.	27 Gedeone fece con quell'oro un Efod e lo pose nella sua città di Efra e tutto Israele prevaricò a causa di esso, che divenne una rovina per Gedeone e per tutta la sua casa.
28 Thus Midian was humbled before the Israelites. He did not raise his head again, and the country hadpeace for forty years, as long as Gideon lived.	28 Madian fu umiliato innanzi ai figliuoli d'Israele, nè potè più oltre alzare il suo collo; e il paese riposò per i quarant'anni durante i quali governò Gedeone.
29 So Jerubbaal son of Joash went to live at home.	29 Andò pertanto Jerobaal figlio di Joas ad abitare nella sua casa,
30 Gideon had seventy sons begotten by him, for he had many wives.	30 ed ebbe settanta figli, tutti da lui procreati avendo avuto molte mogli.
31 His concubine, who lived in Shechem, also bore him a son, to whom he gave the name Abimelech.	31 Da una concubina che avea in Sichem ebbe un figlio di nome Abimelec.
32 Gideon son of Joash died after a happy old age and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, atOphrah of Abiezer.	32 Morì Gedeone figlio di Joas in età molto avanzata e venne sepolto nella tomba di Joas suo padre, in Efra della famiglia di Ezri.
33 After Gideon's death, the people of Israel again began to prostitute themselves to the Baals, takingBaal-Berith for their god.	33 Dopo la morte di Gedeone i figli di Israele prevaricarono e fornicarono coi Baalim. Fecero alleanza con Baal, affinchè fosse il loro dio
34 The Israelites no longer remembered Yahweh their God, who had rescued them from all the enemiesround them.	34 e non si ricordarono più del Signore Iddio che li aveva liberati dalle mani di tutti i loro nemici circostanti,
35 And to the family of Jerubbaal -- Gideon -- they showed no faithful gratitude for al the good which ithad done for Israel.	35 e non usarono neppure misericordia alla casa di Jerobaal ossia di Gedeone, in vista di tutto il bene che egli aveva fatto in Israele.
