NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Now the men of Ephraim said to Gideon, 'What do you mean by treating us like this, not summoning uswhen you went to fight Midian?' And they reproached him bitterly.	1 La gente de Efraím dijo a Gedeón: «¿Qué nos has hecho? ¿Por qué no nos llamaste cuando fuiste a combatir contra Madián?». Y se lo reprocharon violentamente.
2 He replied, 'What have I achieved, compared with you? Is not the gleaning of Ephraim's grapes betterthan the vintage of Abiezer?	2 Pero él les respondió: «¿Qué hice yo comparado con lo que hicieron ustedes? Un solo racimo de Efraím vale más que toda la vendimia de Abiézer.
3 God delivered Oreb and Zeeb, the chieftains of Midian, into your power. What was I able to do, incomparison with what you have done?' At these words, their anger with him died down.	3 Dios puso en manos de ustedes a los jefes de Madián, Oreb y Zeeb. Comparado con esto, ¿qué he logrado hacer yo?». Después que les dijo estas palabras, se calmó su animosidad contra él.
4 Gideon reached the Jordan and crossed it, but he and his three hundred companions were exhaustedwith the pursuit.	4 Gedeón llegó hasta el Jordán y lo cruzó. El y los trescientos hombres que lo acompañaban estaban cansados y hambrientos.
5 So he said to the men of Succoth, 'Please give my fol owers some loaves of bread, since they areexhausted, and I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna the kings of Midian.'	5 Entonces dijo a la gente de Sucot: «Por favor, traigan un poco de pan para la tropa que me acompaña, porque están agotados de cansancio, y yo estoy persiguiendo a Zébaj y a Salmuná, reyes de Madián».
6 The headmen of Succoth replied, 'Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your grasp, that weshould give bread to your army?'	6 Pero los jefes de Sucot le respondieron: «¿Acaso tienes prisioneros a Zébaj y a Salmuná para que le demos pan a tu ejército?».
7 'Very wel ,' retorted Gideon, 'when Yahweh has put Zebah and Zalmunna into my power, I shal tearyour flesh off with desert-thorn and thistles.'	7 «Está bien, respondió Gedeón; cuando el Señor ponga en mis manos a Zébaj y a Salmuná, desgarraré la carne de ustedes con espinas y cardos del desierto».
8 From there he went up to Penuel and asked the men of Penuel the same thing; they replied as those ofSuccoth had done.	8 De allí subió a Penuel y les hizo el mismo pedido. Pero la gente de Penuel le respondió lo mismo que la gente de Sucot.
9 And to those of Penuel he made a similar retort, 'When I return victorious, I shal destroy this tower.'	9 Entonces Gedeón dijo a los de Penuel: «Cuando vuelva victorioso, derribaré esta torre».
10 Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their army, about fifteen thousand men, al that was left ofthe entire army of the sons of the East. Of men bearing arms, a hundred and twenty thousand had fal en.	10 Zébaj y Salmuná estaban en Carcor con su ejército. Eran unos quince mil hombres, es decir, todos los sobrevivientes del campamento de los Orientales. Los que habían caído eran ciento veinte mil armados de espada.
11 Gideon approached them by the tent-dwellers' route, east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and attacked thearmy when it thought itself in safety.	11 Gedeón subió por el camino de los nómadas, al este de Nóbaj y de Iogbohá, y derrotó al ejército, cuando ya se creían seguros.
12 Zebah and Zalmunna fled. He pursued them; he took the two kings of Midian prisoner -- Zebah andZalmunna -- and the whole army he routed in panic.	12 Zébaj y Salmuná, reyes de Madián, trataron de huir, pero Gedeón los persiguió, los capturó a los dos y sembró el pánico en todo el ejército.
13 After the battle Gideon came back by the Ascent of Heres.	13 Después del combate, Gedeón, hijo de Joás, regresó por la pendiente de Jares.
14 He caught a young man, one of the people of Succoth, and questioned him, and the latter wrote downthe names of the headmen and elders of Succoth for him -- seventy-seven men.	14 Entonces detuvo a un joven de Sucot, lo interrogó, y él le dio por escrito los nombres de los jefes y los ancianos de Sucot. Eran setenta y siete hombres.
15 Gideon son of Joash then went to the people of Succoth and said, 'Here you see Zebah andZalmunna, about whom you taunted me and said, "Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your grasp,that we should give bread to your exhausted troops?" '	15 Luego se presentó ante los hombres de Sucot y les dijo: «Aquí están Zébaj y Salmuná, los hombres por los que ustedes se burlaron de mí, diciendo: «¿Acaso ya tienes en tu poder a Zébaj y Salmuná para que les demos pan a tus tropas hambrientas?».
16 He then seized the elders of the town and, taking desert-thorn and thistles, tore the men of Succoth topieces.	16 Después tomó a los ancianos de la ciudad, recogió espinas y cardos del desierto e hirió con ellos a los hombres de Sucot.
17 He destroyed the tower of Penuel and slaughtered the townsmen.	17 También derribó la torre de Penuel y mató a los hombres de la ciudad.
18 He then said to Zebah and Zalmunna, 'The men you kil ed at Tabor -- what were they like?' Theyreplied, 'They looked like you. Every one of them carried himself like the son of a king.'	18 Gedeón dijo a Zébaj y a Salmuná: «¿Cómo eran los hombres que ustedes mataron en Tabor?». «Se parecían a ti, respondieron ellos; todos tenían aspecto de príncipes».
19 Gideon replied, 'They were my brothers, the sons of my own mother; as Yahweh lives, if you hadspared their lives I would not kil you.'	19 Gedeón les respondió: «Ellos eran mis hermanos, hijos de mi madres, ¡Juro por la vida del Señor, que si ustedes les hubieran perdonado la vida, ahora no los mataría!».
20 To Jether his eldest son he said, 'Stand up and kil them!' But the boy did not draw his sword; he darednot; he was stil only a lad.	20 Entonces dijo a Iéter, su hijo mayor: «Mátalos aquí mismo». Pero el muchacho tuvo miedo de sacar la espada, porque todavía era muy joven.
21 Zebah and Zalmunna then said, 'Stand up yourself, and strike us down; for as a man is, so is hisstrength.' Then Gideon stood up and kil ed Zebah and Zalmunna; and he took the crescents from round theircamels' necks.	21 Zébaj y Salmuná dijeron: «Mátanos tú, porque un hombre se mide por su valor». Gedeón se levantó, mató a Zébaj y a Salmuná, y se guardó los adornos que sus camellos llevaban en el cuello.
22 The men of Israel said to Gideon, 'Rule over us, you, your son and your grandson, since you haverescued us from the power of Midian.'	22 Los hombres de Israel dijeron a Gedeón: «Gobiérnanos tú, y que después de ti nos gobiernen tu hijo y tu nieto, porque nos salvaste del poder de Madián».
23 But Gideon replied, 'I wil not rule you, neither wil my son. Yahweh shal rule you.'	23 Pero Gedeón les respondió: «Ni yo los gobernaré ni tampoco mi hijo; sólo el Señor los gobernará».
24 Gideon went on, however, 'Let me make you one request. Each of you give me one ring out of hisbooty' -- for the vanquished had had gold rings, being Ishmaelites.	24 Luego añadió: «Les voy a pedir una cosa: que cada uno me dé un anillo de lo que le ha tocado como botín». Porque los vencidos eran ismaelitas, y por eso tenían anillos de oro.
25 'We shal give them gladly,' they replied. So he spread out his cloak, and on it each of them threw aring from his booty.	25 «Te los daremos con mucho gusto», respondieron ellos. Entonces él extendió su manto, y cada israelita depositó en él un anillo de su botín.
26 The weight of the gold rings which he had asked for amounted to seventeen hundred shekels of gold,besides the crescents and the earrings and purple garments worn by the kings of Midian, and besides the col arsround their camels' necks.	26 El peso de los anillos que recogió fue de mil setecientos siclos de oro, sin contar los prendedores, los aros y los vestidos de púrpura que llevaban los reyes de Madián, y sin contar tampoco los collares de los camellos.
27 From this Gideon made an ephod and set it up in his town, in Ophrah. All Israel, fol owing his example,prostituted themselves to it, and it was a snare for Gideon and his family.	27 Con todo eso, Gedeón hizo un efod, y lo instaló en su ciudad, en Ofrá. Todo Israel fue a prostituirse allí, delante del efod, que se convirtió en una trampa para Gedeón y su familia.
28 Thus Midian was humbled before the Israelites. He did not raise his head again, and the country hadpeace for forty years, as long as Gideon lived.	28 Madián quedó humillado delante de los israelitas, y no volvió a levantar cabeza. El país estuvo tranquilo durante cuarenta años, mientras vivió Gedeón.
29 So Jerubbaal son of Joash went to live at home.	29 Ierubaal, hijo de Joás, se fue y permaneció en su casa.
30 Gideon had seventy sons begotten by him, for he had many wives.	30 Gedeón tuvo setenta hijos propios, porque tenía muchas mujeres.
31 His concubine, who lived in Shechem, also bore him a son, to whom he gave the name Abimelech.	31 La concubina que tenía en Siquem también le dio un hijo, a quien puso el nombre de Abimélec.
32 Gideon son of Joash died after a happy old age and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, atOphrah of Abiezer.	32 Gedeón, hijo de Joás, murió después de una feliz vejez, y fue enterrado en la tumba de su padre Joás, en Ofrá de Abiézer.
33 After Gideon's death, the people of Israel again began to prostitute themselves to the Baals, takingBaal-Berith for their god.	33 Después de la muerte de Gedeón, los israelitas volvieron a prostituirse ante los Baales y tomaron como dios a Baal Berit.
34 The Israelites no longer remembered Yahweh their God, who had rescued them from all the enemiesround them.	34 Así se olvidaron del Señor, su Dios, que los había librado de todos los enemigos de alrededor.
35 And to the family of Jerubbaal -- Gideon -- they showed no faithful gratitude for al the good which ithad done for Israel.	35 Y no agradecieron a la casa de Ierubaal Gedeón todo el bien que él había a Israel.
