1 Now the men of Ephraim said to Gideon, 'What do you mean by treating us like this, not summoning uswhen you went to fight Midian?' And they reproached him bitterly.	1 Gli Efraimiti dissero a Gedeone: "Perché con noi ti sei comportato in questo modo? Sei andato a combattere contro i Madianiti senza chiamarci!". Essi erano molto irritati contro di lui.
2 He replied, 'What have I achieved, compared with you? Is not the gleaning of Ephraim's grapes betterthan the vintage of Abiezer?	2 Ma Gedeone rispose loro: "Che cosa ho compiuto che possa essere paragonato con la vostra impresa? Conta di più la racimolatura di Efraim che non la vendemmia di Abiezer:
3 God delivered Oreb and Zeeb, the chieftains of Midian, into your power. What was I able to do, incomparison with what you have done?' At these words, their anger with him died down.	3 perché è nelle vostre mani che Dio ha consegnato i capi madianiti Oreb e Zeeb. Io non ho fatto nulla che possa essere paragonato con la vostra impresa". A queste parole di Gedeone l'animosità degli Efraimiti si calmò.
4 Gideon reached the Jordan and crossed it, but he and his three hundred companions were exhaustedwith the pursuit.	4 Gedeone raggiunse il Giordano e lo attraversò con i suoi trecento uomini: erano stanchi per l'inseguimento.
5 So he said to the men of Succoth, 'Please give my fol owers some loaves of bread, since they areexhausted, and I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna the kings of Midian.'	5 Egli si rivolse agli abitanti di Succot: "Date, vi prego, dei pani agli uomini che mi seguono. Sono stanchi e io devo inseguire i re madianiti Zebach e Zalmunna".
6 The headmen of Succoth replied, 'Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your grasp, that weshould give bread to your army?'	6 Ma i capi di Succot gli risposero: "Forse che Zebach e Zalmunna sono già nelle tue mani, perché noi diamo da mangiare al tuo esercito?".
7 'Very wel ,' retorted Gideon, 'when Yahweh has put Zebah and Zalmunna into my power, I shal tearyour flesh off with desert-thorn and thistles.'	7 Gedeone rispose: "Vuol dire che quando il Signore avrà dato in mia mano Zebach e Zalmunna, io dilanierò i vostri corpi coi pruni della steppa e con i cardi".
8 From there he went up to Penuel and asked the men of Penuel the same thing; they replied as those ofSuccoth had done.	8 Di là Gedeone salì a Penuel e anche agli abitanti di Penuel rivolse la stessa richiesta, ma essi gli risposero allo stesso modo in cui gli avevano risposto quelli di Succot.
9 And to those of Penuel he made a similar retort, 'When I return victorious, I shal destroy this tower.'	9 Anche agli abitanti di Penuel Gedeone rispose: "Quando tornerò sano e salvo, distruggerò questa rocca".
10 Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their army, about fifteen thousand men, al that was left ofthe entire army of the sons of the East. Of men bearing arms, a hundred and twenty thousand had fal en.	10 Zebach e Zalmunna si trovavano a Karkor insieme alle loro truppe. Erano circa quindicimila uomini: tutto quel che restava del grande esercito degli orientali, perché i guerrieri caduti erano centoventimila.
11 Gideon approached them by the tent-dwellers' route, east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and attacked thearmy when it thought itself in safety.	11 Gedeone, salito per la via di coloro che abitano sotto la tenda, a oriente di Nobach e di Iogbea, assalì di sorpresa i nemici.
12 Zebah and Zalmunna fled. He pursued them; he took the two kings of Midian prisoner -- Zebah andZalmunna -- and the whole army he routed in panic.	12 I re madianiti Zebach e Zalmunna fuggirono, ma Gedeone, inseguitili, li catturò entrambi, mettendo in fuga il loro esercito.
13 After the battle Gideon came back by the Ascent of Heres.	13 Gedeone, figlio di Ioas, tornò dalla guerra per la salita di Cheres.
14 He caught a young man, one of the people of Succoth, and questioned him, and the latter wrote downthe names of the headmen and elders of Succoth for him -- seventy-seven men.	14 Catturato un giovane di Succot, lo sottopose a un interrogatorio e quello gli scrisse i nomi dei capi e degli anziani di Succot: settantasette uomini.
15 Gideon son of Joash then went to the people of Succoth and said, 'Here you see Zebah andZalmunna, about whom you taunted me and said, "Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your grasp,that we should give bread to your exhausted troops?" '	15 Gedeone si presentò quindi agli abitanti di Succot con queste parole: "Ecco Zebach e Zalmunna, per i quali mi avete deriso, quando mi avete domandato se erano già nelle mie mani, per dover dare da mangiare ai miei uomini stanchi".
16 He then seized the elders of the town and, taking desert-thorn and thistles, tore the men of Succoth topieces.	16 Fatti arrestare gli anziani della città e procuratisi pruni della steppa e cardi, dilaniò con questi i corpi degli uomini di Succot.
17 He destroyed the tower of Penuel and slaughtered the townsmen.	17 Poi distrusse la rocca di Penuel e uccise gli uomini della città.
18 He then said to Zebah and Zalmunna, 'The men you kil ed at Tabor -- what were they like?' Theyreplied, 'They looked like you. Every one of them carried himself like the son of a king.'	18 Poi Gedeone domandò a Zebach e a Zalmunna: "Come erano gli uomini che avete ucciso sul Tabor?". Essi risposero: "Essi ti somigliavano e tutti avevano l'aspetto di figli di re".
19 Gideon replied, 'They were my brothers, the sons of my own mother; as Yahweh lives, if you hadspared their lives I would not kil you.'	19 Gedeone disse: "Erano miei fratelli, figli di mia madre. Come è vero Dio, se voi li aveste lasciati in vita, io non vi ucciderei".
20 To Jether his eldest son he said, 'Stand up and kil them!' But the boy did not draw his sword; he darednot; he was stil only a lad.	20 Si rivolse quindi a Ieter, suo primogenito: "Su, uccidili!"; ma il giovanetto non sguainò la spada, perché aveva timore, essendo ancora molto giovane.
21 Zebah and Zalmunna then said, 'Stand up yourself, and strike us down; for as a man is, so is hisstrength.' Then Gideon stood up and kil ed Zebah and Zalmunna; and he took the crescents from round theircamels' necks.	21 Dissero allora Zebach e Zalmunna: "Su! Colpisci tu, perché la forza dell'uomo è pari alla sua età". Allora Gedeone si mosse e uccise Zebach e Zalmunna. Poi prese le lunette che ornavano il collo dei loro cammelli.
22 The men of Israel said to Gideon, 'Rule over us, you, your son and your grandson, since you haverescued us from the power of Midian.'	22 Gli Israeliti si rivolsero a Gedeone: "Sii nostro capo tu, tuo figlio e il figlio di tuo figlio, perché ci hai salvato dai Madianiti".
23 But Gideon replied, 'I wil not rule you, neither wil my son. Yahweh shal rule you.'	23 Gedeone rispose loro: "Io non sarò vostro capo, né lo sarà mio figlio: è il Signore il vostro capo".
24 Gideon went on, however, 'Let me make you one request. Each of you give me one ring out of hisbooty' -- for the vanquished had had gold rings, being Ishmaelites.	24 Poi Gedeone aggiunse: "Voglio però una cosa, che ciascuno mi dia un anello tratto dalla parte di bottino che gli spetta". I nemici, infatti, essendo Ismaeliti, portavano anelli d'oro.
25 'We shal give them gladly,' they replied. So he spread out his cloak, and on it each of them threw aring from his booty.	25 Gli Israeliti accettarono di buon grado: disteso un mantello, vi gettarono ciascuno un anello tratto dalla propria parte di preda.
26 The weight of the gold rings which he had asked for amounted to seventeen hundred shekels of gold,besides the crescents and the earrings and purple garments worn by the kings of Midian, and besides the col arsround their camels' necks.	26 Il peso degli anelli d'oro che Gedeone aveva richiesto fu di millesettecento sicli d'oro, senza contare le lunette, le pietre preziose e le vesti di porpora portate dai re madianiti, e senza contare i collari che ornavano i colli dei loro cammelli.
27 From this Gideon made an ephod and set it up in his town, in Ophrah. All Israel, fol owing his example,prostituted themselves to it, and it was a snare for Gideon and his family.	27 Con quest'oro Gedeone fece un efod, che pose in Ofra, sua città. Tutto Israele si prostituì in Ofra con quell'efod, che divenne così per Gedeone e per la sua casa motivo di colpa e di rovina.
28 Thus Midian was humbled before the Israelites. He did not raise his head again, and the country hadpeace for forty years, as long as Gideon lived.	28 I Madianiti furono umiliati di fronte agli Israeliti: non alzarono più la testa. Al tempo di Gedeone la regione ebbe pace per quarant'anni.
29 So Jerubbaal son of Joash went to live at home.	29 Ierub-Baal, figlio di Ioas, se ne andò ad abitare a casa sua.
30 Gideon had seventy sons begotten by him, for he had many wives.	30 Ebbe settanta figli usciti dalle sue viscere, perché aveva molte mogli.
31 His concubine, who lived in Shechem, also bore him a son, to whom he gave the name Abimelech.	31 Inoltre ebbe un figlio anche da una concubina che teneva in Sichem e gli pose nome Abimèlech.
32 Gideon son of Joash died after a happy old age and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, atOphrah of Abiezer.	32 Gedeone, figlio di Ioas, morì in serena vecchiezza e fu sepolto nel sepolcro di suo padre Ioas, in Ofra degli Abiezeriti.
33 After Gideon's death, the people of Israel again began to prostitute themselves to the Baals, takingBaal-Berith for their god.	33 Dopo la morte di Gedeone, gli Israeliti si prostituirono di nuovo ai Baal e fecero loro dio Baal-Berit.
34 The Israelites no longer remembered Yahweh their God, who had rescued them from all the enemiesround them.	34 Gli Israeliti si dimenticarono del loro Dio, il Signore, che li aveva liberati dalle mani di tutti i nemici che li circondavano
35 And to the family of Jerubbaal -- Gideon -- they showed no faithful gratitude for al the good which ithad done for Israel.	35 e non serbarono alcuna gratitudine alla casa di Ierub-Baal, cioè di Gedeone, che aveva fatto tanto bene a Israele.
