1 Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) got up very early, as did al the people who were with him; he pitched camp at En-Harod; the camp of Midian was north of his, under the Hill of Moreh in the val ey.	1 Ierub-Baal, cioè Gedeone, si mosse di buon mattino con tutti i suoi uomini e andarono a porre il campo alla fonte di Carod; l'accampamento dei Madianiti era posto a nord di quello ebraico, nella pianura ai piedi della collina di More.
2 Yahweh then said to Gideon, 'There are too many people with you for me to put Midian into their power;Israel might claim the credit for themselves at my expense: they might say, "My own hand has rescued me."	2 Allora il Signore disse a Gedeone: "Gli uomini che hai con te sono troppi, perché io possa mettere i Madianiti nelle loro mani. Gli Israeliti, infatti, potrebbero gloriarsi dell'impresa contro di me, pensando di essersi salvati per opera loro.
3 So now make this proclamation to the people, "Anyone trembling with fear is to go back and watch fromMount Gilboa." ' Twenty-two thousand of the people went back, and ten thousand remained.	3 Ora perciò devi proclamare al popolo che chiunque abbia paura e tremi, ha da ritirarsi e tornarsene via". Gedeone li mise alla prova: se ne ritirarono ventiduemila e ne restarono diecimila.
4 Yahweh said to Gideon, 'There are stil too many people. Take them down to the waterside and I shalsort them out for you there. If I say of someone, "He is to go with you," that man is to go with you. And if I say of anyone, "He is not to go with you," that man is not to go.'	4 Ma il Signore disse a Gedeone: "Sono ancora troppi. Falli scendere dove c'è l'acqua; là te li metterò alla prova. Quelli che ti dirò di portare con te, verranno con te e quelli che ti dirò di non portare con te, non verranno".
5 So Gideon took the people down to the waterside, and Yahweh said to him, 'Al those who lap the waterwith their tongues, as a dog laps, put these on one side. And al those who kneel down to drink, put these on theother side.'	5 Gedeone ordinò ai suoi uomini di scendere all'acqua, e il Signore gli disse: "Tutti quelli che lambiranno l'acqua con la lingua, come fanno i cani, mettili da parte; tutti quelli invece che per bere si piegheranno sui loro ginocchi, lasciali andare".
6 The number of those who lapped with their hands to their mouth was three hundred; al the rest of thepeople had knelt to drink.	6 Quelli che lambirono l'acqua con la lingua furono trecento; tutti gli altri, per bere, si erano piegati sulle ginocchia e avevano portato l'acqua alla bocca con le mani.
7 Yahweh then said to Gideon, 'With the three hundred who lapped the water, I shal rescue you and putMidian into your power. Let the people as a whole disperse to their homes.'	7 Disse allora il Signore a Gedeone: "Con questi trecento uomini che hanno lambito l'acqua con la lingua io vi salverò e metterò i Madianiti nelle tue mani. Tutti gli altri se ne tornino ciascuno al suo paese".
8 So they took the people's provisions and their horns, and then Gideon sent al the Israelites back to theirtents, keeping only the three hundred. The camp of Midian was below his in the val ey.	8 Presero con sé le provviste necessarie al gruppo e i corni. Gedeone poi rimandò tutti gli altri uomini d'Israele ciascuno alla sua tenda e tenne con sé solo i trecento. Il campo dei Madianiti si trovava nella valle sottostante.
9 Now it happened, that same night, that Yahweh said to him, 'Get up and go down to the camp. I amputting it into your power.	9 Quella notte il Signore si rivolse a Gedeone: "Su, scendi all'accampamento nemico, perché lo darò in tuo potere.
10 If, however, you are nervous about going down, go down to the camp with your servant Purah;	10 E se hai paura ad andare da solo nell'accampamento nemico, porta con te il tuo servo Pura.
11 listen to what they are saying, and that wil encourage you to go down to the camp.' So, with hisservant Purah, he went down to the edge of the outposts of the camp.	11 Lì ascolterai quel che si dice: allora il tuo braccio si farà più forte per assalire il campo nemico". Gedeone scese col suo servo Pura fino agli avamposti del campo madianita.
12 Midian, Amalek and al the sons of the East were deployed in the val ey as thick as locusts; theircamels were as innumerable as the sand on the seashore.	12 I Madianiti, gli Amaleciti e tutti gli orientali coprivano la valle, numerosi come le cavallette; i loro cammelli non avevano numero, erano come la sabbia sul lido del mare.
13 Gideon got there just as a man was tel ing his comrade a dream; he was saying, 'This was the dream Ihad: a cake made of barley bread came rolling into the camp of Midian; it came to a tent, struck against it andturned it upside down.'	13 Gedeone penetrò dunque nell'accampamento nemico e udì un uomo che raccontava a un altro un suo sogno; diceva: "Ho fatto un sogno: mi pareva che una pagnotta di pane d'orzo rotolasse nel campo madianita. Arrivata alla tenda, la colpì e la rovesciò".
14 His comrade replied, 'This can only be the sword of Gideon son of Joash the Israelite. God has putMidian and the whole camp into his power.'	14 Gli rispose quell'altro: "Non è altro che la spada dell'israelita Gedeone, figlio di Ioas: Dio darà in suo potere i Madianiti e tutto l'accampamento".
15 When Gideon heard the dream thus told and interpreted, he bowed in reverence; he then went back tothe camp of Israel and said, 'On your feet, for Yahweh has put the camp of Midian into your power!'	15 All'udire il racconto di questo sogno e la sua interpretazione, Gedeone si prostrò. Poi tornato all'accampamento d'Israele, ordinò ai suoi di muoversi, assicurandoli che il Signore avrebbe dato in loro potere l'accampamento madianita.
16 Gideon then divided his three hundred men into three groups. To each he gave a horn and an emptypitcher, with a torch inside each pitcher.	16 Gedeone, dopo aver diviso i suoi trecento uomini in tre gruppi, consegnò ad ognuno di loro un corno e un vaso di coccio vuoto con dentro una torcia.
17 He said to them, 'Watch me, and do as I do. When I reach the edge of the camp, whatever I do, youmust do also.	17 Dette loro queste istruzioni: "Voi dovete guardarmi e fare quello che farò io: ecco, quando io sarò arrivato al limite dell'accampamento nemico, voi dovrete fare quello che farò io.
18 I shal blow my horn, and so wil all those who are with me; you too will then blow your horns al roundthe camp and shout, "For Yahweh and for Gideon!"	18 Quando io, seguito da tutti coloro che sono nel mio gruppo, suonerò il corno, anche voi suonerete i corni tutt'intorno all'accampamento, gridando: "Per il Signore e per Gedeone!".
19 Gideon and his hundred companions reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middlewatch, when the new sentries had just been posted; they blew their horns and smashed the pitchers in theirhands.	19 Gedeone e i suoi cento uomini, giunti a ridosso dell'accampamento nemico all'inizio del secondo turno di guardia, subito dopo il cambio delle sentinelle, dettero fiato ai corni e spezzarono i vasi che avevano con sé.
20 The three groups blew their horns and smashed their pitchers; with their left hands they grasped thetorches, with their right hands the horns for blowing them; and they shouted, 'The sword for Yahweh and forGideon!'	20 Allora tutti e tre i gruppi suonarono i corni e spezzarono i vasi: tenevano nella sinistra le torce e nella destra i corni in cui soffiavano. Intanto gridavano: "Spada! Per il Signore e per Gedeone!".
21 And they stood stil , spaced out round the camp. The whole camp was thrown into confusion and theMidianites fled, shouting.	21 Per quanto gli Israeliti restassero fermi, ciascuno al suo posto intorno all'accampamento madianita, in questo era tutto un correre, un vociare, un fuggire.
22 While the three hundred blew their horns, Yahweh made each man turn his sword against his comradethroughout the entire camp. They al fled as far as Beth-ha-Shittah in the direction of Zarethan, as far as thebank of Abel-Meholah opposite Tabbath.	22 Quando i trecento suonarono i corni, il Signore fece rivolgere, in tutto il campo nemico, le spade degli uni contro gli altri. Fuggirono tutti fino a Bet-Sitta, in direzione di Zerera, fino alle sponde di Abel Mecola, di fronte a Tabbat.
23 The men of Israel mustered from Naphtali, Asher and all Manasseh, and pursued Midian.	23 Allora si riunirono gli uomini di Neftali, di Aser e di tutto Manasse e si dettero all'inseguimento dei Madianiti.
24 Gideon sent messengers throughout the highlands of Ephraim to say, 'Come down to meet Midian,seize the water-points ahead of them as far as Beth-Barah and the Jordan.' Al the men of Ephraim musteredand seized the water-points as far as Beth-Barah and the Jordan.	24 Gedeone mandò messaggeri per tutta la montagna di Efraim per invitare gli Efraimiti a scendere contro i Madianiti, occupando fino a Bet-Bara e al Giordano tutti i luoghi in cui avrebbero potuto rifornirsi di acqua e i guadi del Giordano. 25 They captured the two Midianite chieftains, Oreb and Zeeb; they killed Oreb at Oreb's Rock and Zeebat Zeeb's Winepress. They pursued Midian; and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on theother side of the Jordan.	25 Furono catturati due capi madianiti, Oreb e Zeeb, e furono uccisi, Oreb al masso di Oreb e Zeeb al frantoio di Zeeb: gli Efraimiti continuarono poi l'inseguimento dei Madianiti e mandarono a Gedeone, che si trovava al di là del Giordano, le teste di Oreb e di Zeeb.
