Judges 7

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) got up very early, as did al the people who were with him; he pitched camp at En-Harod; the camp of Midian was north of his, under the Hill of Moreh in the val ey.	1 Yerubbaal (c'est-à-dire Gédéon) se leva de grand matin ainsi que tout le peuple qui était avec lui, et ilvint camper à En-Harod; le camp de Madiân se trouvait au nord du sien, au pied de la colline du Moré dans lavallée.
2 Yahweh then said to Gideon, 'There are too many people with you for me to put Midian into their power;Israel might claim the credit for themselves at my expense: they might say, "My own hand has rescued me."	2 Alors Yahvé dit à Gédéon: "Le peuple qui est avec toi est trop nombreux pour que je livre Madiânentre ses mains; Israël pourrait en tirer gloire à mes dépens, et dire: C'est ma propre main qui m'a délivré!
3 So now make this proclamation to the people, "Anyone trembling with fear is to go back and watch fromMount Gilboa." ' Twenty-two thousand of the people went back, and ten thousand remained.	3 Et maintenant, proclame donc ceci aux oreilles du peuple: Que celui qui a peur et qui tremble, s'enretourne et qu'il observe du mont Gelboé." 22.000 hommes parmi le peuple s'en retournèrent et il en resta10.000.
4 Yahweh said to Gideon, 'There are stil too many people. Take them down to the waterside and I shalsort them out for you there. If I say of someone, "He is to go with you," that man is to go with you. And if I say of anyone, "He is not to go with you," that man is not to go.'	4 Yahvé dit à Gédéon: "Ce peuple est encore trop nombreux. Fais-les descendre au bord de l'eau et là,pour toi, je les éprouverai. Celui dont je te dirai: Qu'il aille avec toi, celui-là ira avec toi. Et tout homme dont jete dirai: Qu'il n'aille pas avec toi, celui-là n'ira pas."
5 So Gideon took the people down to the waterside, and Yahweh said to him, 'Al those who lap the waterwith their tongues, as a dog laps, put these on one side. And al those who kneel down to drink, put these on theother side.'	5 Gédéon fit alors descendre le peuple au bord de l'eau et Yahvé lui dit: "Tous ceux qui laperont l'eauavec la langue comme lape le chien, tu les mettras d'un côté. Et tous ceux qui s'agenouilleront pour boire, tu lesmettras de l'autre."
6 The number of those who lapped with their hands to their mouth was three hundred; al the rest of thepeople had knelt to drink.	6 Le nombre de ceux qui lapèrent l'eau avec leurs mains à leur bouche fut de 300. Tout le reste dupeuple s'était agenouillé pour boire.
7 Yahweh then said to Gideon, 'With the three hundred who lapped the water, I shal rescue you and putMidian into your power. Let the people as a whole disperse to their homes.'	7 Alors Yahvé dit à Gédéon: "C'est avec les 300 hommes qui ont lapé l'eau que je vous sauverai et queje livrerai Madiân entre tes mains. Que tout le peuple s'en retourne chacun chez soi."
8 So they took the people's provisions and their horns, and then Gideon sent al the Israelites back to theirtents, keeping only the three hundred. The camp of Midian was below his in the val ey.	8 Ils prirent les provisions du peuple et leurs cors, puis Gédéon renvoya tous les Israélites chacun soussa tente, ne gardant que les 300. Le camp de Madiân se trouvait au-dessous du sien dans la vallée.
9 Now it happened, that same night, that Yahweh said to him, 'Get up and go down to the camp. I amputting it into your power.	9 Or il arriva que pendant cette nuit-là Yahvé lui dit: "Lève-toi, descends au camp, car je le livre entretes mains.
10 If, however, you are nervous about going down, go down to the camp with your servant Purah;	10 Cependant, si tu as peur de descendre, descends au camp avec Pura ton serviteur;
11 listen to what they are saying, and that wil encourage you to go down to the camp.' So, with hisservant Purah, he went down to the edge of the outposts of the camp.	11 écoute ce qu'ils disent; tu en seras réconforté, et tu descendras contre le camp." Il descendit doncavec son serviteur Pura jusqu'à l'extrémité des avant-postes du camp.
12 Midian, Amalek and al the sons of the East were deployed in the val ey as thick as locusts; theircamels were as innumerable as the sand on the seashore.	12 Madiân, Amaleq et tous les fils de l'Orient étaient déployés dans la vallée, aussi nombreux que dessauterelles; leurs chameaux étaient sans nombre, comme le sable sur le bord de la mer.
13 Gideon got there just as a man was tel ing his comrade a dream; he was saying, 'This was the dream Ihad: a cake made of barley bread came rolling into the camp of Midian; it came to a tent, struck against it andturned it upside down.'	13 Gédéon vint donc et voici qu'un homme racontait un rêve à son camarade; il disait: "Voici le rêveque j'ai fait: une galette de pain d'orge roulait dans le camp de Madiân, elle atteignit la tente, elle la heurta et larenversa sens dessus dessous."
14 His comrade replied, 'This can only be the sword of Gideon son of Joash the Israelite. God has putMidian and the whole camp into his power.'	14 Son camarade lui répondit: "Ce ne peut être que l'épée de Gédéon, fils de Yoash, l'Israélite. Dieu alivré entre ses mains Madiân et tout le camp."
15 When Gideon heard the dream thus told and interpreted, he bowed in reverence; he then went back tothe camp of Israel and said, 'On your feet, for Yahweh has put the camp of Midian into your power!'	15 Quand il eut entendu le récit du songe et son explication, Gédéon se prosterna, puis il revint au campd'Israël et dit: "Debout! car Yahvé a livré entre vos mains le camp de Madiân!"
16 Gideon then divided his three hundred men into three groups. To each he gave a horn and an emptypitcher, with a torch inside each pitcher.	16 Gédéon divisa alors ses 300 hommes en trois groupes. A tous il remit des cors et des cruches vides,avec des torches dans les cruches:
17 He said to them, 'Watch me, and do as I do. When I reach the edge of the camp, whatever I do, youmust do also.	17 "Regardez-moi, leur dit-il, et faites comme moi! Quand je serai arrivé à l'extrémité du camp, ce queje ferai, vous le ferez aussi!
18 I shal blow my horn, and so wil all those who are with me; you too will then blow your horns al roundthe camp and shout, "For Yahweh and for Gideon!"	18 Je sonnerai du cor, moi et tous ceux qui sont avec moi; alors, vous aussi, vous sonnerez du cor toutautour du camp et vous crierez: Pour Yahvé et pour Gédéon!"
19 Gideon and his hundred companions reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middlewatch, when the new sentries had just been posted; they blew their horns and smashed the pitchers in theirhands.	19 Gédéon et les cent hommes qui l'accompagnaient arrivèrent à l'extrémité du camp au début de laveille de la mi-nuit, comme on venait de placer les sentinelles; ils sonnèrent du cor et brisèrent les cruches qu'ilsavaient à la main.
20 The three groups blew their horns and smashed their pitchers; with their left hands they grasped thetorches, with their right hands the horns for blowing them; and they shouted, 'The sword for Yahweh and forGideon!'	20 Alors les trois groupes sonnèrent du cor et brisèrent leurs cruches; de la main gauche ils saisirent lestorches, de la droite les cors pour en sonner, et ils crièrent: "Epée pour Yahvé et pour Gédéon!"
21 And they stood stil , spaced out round the camp. The whole camp was thrown into confusion and theMidianites fled, shouting.	21 Et ils se tinrent immobiles chacun à sa place autour du camp. Tout le camp alors s'agita et, poussantdes cris, les Madianites prirent la fuite.
22 While the three hundred blew their horns, Yahweh made each man turn his sword against his comradethroughout the entire camp. They al fled as far as Beth-ha-Shittah in the direction of Zarethan, as far as thebank of Abel-Meholah opposite Tabbath.	22 Pendant que les 300 sonnaient du cor, Yahvé fit que dans tout le camp chacun tournait l'épée contreson camarade. Tous s'enfuirent jusqu'à Bet-ha-Shitta, vers Cartân, jusqu'à la rive d'Abel-Mehola vis-à-vis deTabbat.
23 The men of Israel mustered from Naphtali, Asher and all Manasseh, and pursued Midian.	23 Les gens d'Israël se rassemblèrent, de Nephtali, d'Asher et de tout Manassé, et ils poursuivirentMadiân.
24 Gideon sent messengers throughout the highlands of Ephraim to say, 'Come down to meet Midian,seize the water-points ahead of them as far as Beth-Barah and the Jordan.' Al the men of Ephraim musteredand seized the water-points as far as Beth-Barah and the Jordan.	24 Gédéon envoya dans toute la montagne d'Ephraïm des messagers dire: "Descendez à la rencontre deMadiân et occupez avant eux les points d'eau jusqu'à Bet-Bara et le Jourdain." Tous les gens d'Ephraïm serassemblèrent et ils occupèrent les points d'eau jusqu'à Bet-Bara et le Jourdain.
25 They captured the two Midianite chieftains, Oreb and Zeeb; they killed Oreb at Oreb's Rock and Zeebat Zeeb's Winepress. They pursued Midian; and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on theother side of the Jordan.	25 Ils firent prisonniers les deux chefs de Madiân, Oreb et Zéeb, ils tuèrent Oreb au Rocher d'Oreb etZéeb au Pressoir de Zéeb. Ils poursuivirent Madiân et ils apportèrent à Gédéon au-delà du Jourdain les têtesd'Oreb et de Zéeb.
