1 Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) got up very early, as did al the people who were with him; he pitched camp at En-Harod; the camp of Midian was north of his, under the Hill of Moreh in the val ey.	1 Quindi Jerobaal, o sia Gedeone, levatosi di notte tempo, se n'andò insieme con tutto il popolo alla fontana detta Harad: e il campo de' Madianiti era nella valle verso la parte settentrionale d'un alto colle.
2 Yahweh then said to Gideon, 'There are too many people with you for me to put Midian into their power;Israel might claim the credit for themselves at my expense: they might say, "My own hand has rescued me."	2 E il Signore disse a Gedeone: Una gran turba di gente è con te, e Madian non sarà dato nelle mani di lei, affinchè Israele non si glorifichi contro di me, e dica: Colle mie forze mi son liberato.
3 So now make this proclamation to the people, "Anyone trembling with fear is to go back and watch fromMount Gilboa." ' Twenty-two thousand of the people went back, and ten thousand remained.	3 Parla al popolo, e a sentita di tutti intima: Chi è pauroso, e timido, se ne vada. E si ritiraron dal monte di Galaad, e tornarono a casa ventidue mila uomini dal popolo, e rimaser solo dieci mila.
4 Yahweh said to Gideon, 'There are stil too many people. Take them down to the waterside and I shalsort them out for you there. If I say of someone, "He is to go with you," that man is to go with you. And if I say of anyone, "He is not to go with you," that man is not to go.'	4 E il Signore disse a Gedeone: Troppa gente hai ancora con te: conducigli all'acqua, e ivi io farò saggio di loro: e chi io ti dirò che venga teco, venga: e quegli, a cui vieterò d’andare, se ne vada,
5 So Gideon took the people down to the waterside, and Yahweh said to him, 'Al those who lap the waterwith their tongues, as a dog laps, put these on one side. And al those who kneel down to drink, put these on theother side.'	5 E giunto che fu il popolo alle acque, disse il Signore a Gedeone: Quelli che avran leccate le acque colla lingua, come soglion leccarle i cani, li metterai in disparte: quelli che avran piegate le ginocchia per bere, staranno da un altro lato.
6 The number of those who lapped with their hands to their mouth was three hundred; al the rest of thepeople had knelt to drink.	6 Il numero adunque di coloro, i quali avean leccata l’acqua, portandola colla mano alla bocca, fu di trecento uomini: e tutto il resto della moltitudine avea piegato il ginocchio per bere.
7 Yahweh then said to Gideon, 'With the three hundred who lapped the water, I shal rescue you and putMidian into your power. Let the people as a whole disperse to their homes.'	7 E il Signore disse a Gedeone: Questi trecento uomini, i quali hanno leccata l'acqua, son quelli, per mezzo de' quali io vi libererò, e darò in tuo potere i Madianiti: tutto il resto della moltitudine se ne ritorni indietro.
8 So they took the people's provisions and their horns, and then Gideon sent al the Israelites back to theirtents, keeping only the three hundred. The camp of Midian was below his in the val ey.	8 Presi adunque de’ viveri a proporzione del numero delle trombe, ordinò (Gedeone), che tutto il resto della moltitudine se n'andasse alle sue tende, ed egli co' trecento uomini si dispose a combattere. Ora gli alloggiamenti di Madian erano giù nella valle.
9 Now it happened, that same night, that Yahweh said to him, 'Get up and go down to the camp. I amputting it into your power.	9 La stessa notte disse a lui il Signore: Alzati, e scendi agli alloggiamenti: perocché io ho dati coloro in tuo potere:
10 If, however, you are nervous about going down, go down to the camp with your servant Purah;	10 Ma se hai paura di andar solo, venga teco Phara tuo servo.
11 listen to what they are saying, and that wil encourage you to go down to the camp.' So, with hisservant Purah, he went down to the edge of the outposts of the camp.	11 E quando avrai sentito i loro discorsi, allora si rinvigoriran le tue braccia, e andrai con maggior fidanza agli alloggiamenti. Andò adunque egli, e Phara suo servo da quella parte degli alloggiamenti, dove erano sentinelle armate.
12 Midian, Amalek and al the sons of the East were deployed in the val ey as thick as locusts; theircamels were as innumerable as the sand on the seashore.	12 Ora i Madianiti, e gli Amaleciti, e tutti i popoli di oriente s'erano sdraiati nella valle come una turba di locuste: i cammelli ancora erano innumerabili come la rena dei lido del mare.
13 Gideon got there just as a man was tel ing his comrade a dream; he was saying, 'This was the dream Ihad: a cake made of barley bread came rolling into the camp of Midian; it came to a tent, struck against it andturned it upside down.'	13 E nell’accostarsi che fece Gedeone, uno di quelli raccontava un sogno al suo vicino, e spiegava in tal guisa quello che avea veduto: Ho veduto tal sogno, in cui mi parea come un pane d'orzo cotto sotto la cenere che rotolasse, e cadesse negli alloggiamenti di Madian; e arrivato che fu al padiglione, lo percosse, e lo rovesciò, e atterrollo da capo a piè.
14 His comrade replied, 'This can only be the sword of Gideon son of Joash the Israelite. God has putMidian and the whole camp into his power.'	14 Risposegli l'altro, col quale egli parlava: Questo non altro significa se non la spada di Gedeone figliuolo di Gioas Israelita: perocché il Signore ha dato Madian, e tutto il campo in potere di lui.
15 When Gideon heard the dream thus told and interpreted, he bowed in reverence; he then went back tothe camp of Israel and said, 'On your feet, for Yahweh has put the camp of Midian into your power!'	15 Udito che ebbe Gedeone il sogno, e la interpretazione, adorò (il Signore), e tornò agli alloggiamenti d'Israele, e disse: Alzatevi, perchè il Signore ha dato in nostro potere il campo de' Madianiti.
16 Gideon then divided his three hundred men into three groups. To each he gave a horn and an emptypitcher, with a torch inside each pitcher.	16 E divise i trecento uomini in tre schiere, e mise a ciascuno in mano una tromba, e una pentola vota, e nel mezzo della pentola un lume:
17 He said to them, 'Watch me, and do as I do. When I reach the edge of the camp, whatever I do, youmust do also.	17 E disse loro: Quel che vedrete fare a me, fatelo voi: io entrerò da un lato degli alloggiamenti, e imitatemi in quel ch'io farò.
18 I shal blow my horn, and so wil all those who are with me; you too will then blow your horns al roundthe camp and shout, "For Yahweh and for Gideon!"	18 Quand’io sonerò la tromba che ho in mano, voi pure intorno al campo sonate la vostra e gridate ad una voce: Al Signore, e a Gedeone.
19 Gideon and his hundred companions reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middlewatch, when the new sentries had just been posted; they blew their horns and smashed the pitchers in theirhands.	19 Ed entrò Gedeone, e i trecento uomini che eran con lui da una parte degli alloggiamenti al principiare della vigilia di mezza notte; ed essendosi svegliate le sentinelle, cominciaron quegli a sonar le trombe e a battere tra di loro le pentole.
20 The three groups blew their horns and smashed their pitchers; with their left hands they grasped thetorches, with their right hands the horns for blowing them; and they shouted, 'The sword for Yahweh and forGideon!'	20 Ed essendo divisi intorno agli alloggiamenti, e facendosi udire il suono da tre parti, rotte che ebbero le pentole, preser colla sinistra i lumi, e tenendo nella destra le trombe, e sonandole gridavano: La spada del Signore, e di Gedeone,
21 And they stood stil , spaced out round the camp. The whole camp was thrown into confusion and theMidianites fled, shouting.	21 Stando ciascuno al suo posto intorno al campo nemico. Per le quali cose tutto il campo fu posto in confusione e stridendo e urlando si diedero alla fuga:
22 While the three hundred blew their horns, Yahweh made each man turn his sword against his comradethroughout the entire camp. They al fled as far as Beth-ha-Shittah in the direction of Zarethan, as far as thebank of Abel-Meholah opposite Tabbath.	22 E contuttoció i trecento continuavano a sonare le trombe. E il Signore fece si, che per tutto il campo si sguainaron le spade, e si uccidevano gli uni gli altri:
23 The men of Israel mustered from Naphtali, Asher and all Manasseh, and pursued Midian.	23 E fuggirono sino a Beth-setta, e sino a' confini di Abelmehula in Tebbath. Ma gli uomini d’Israele della tribù di Nephthali, e di Aser, e di tutto Manasse, alzate le grida inseguirono i Madianiti.
24 Gideon sent messengers throughout the highlands of Ephraim to say, 'Come down to meet Midian,seize the water-points ahead of them as far as Beth-Barah and the Jordan.' Al the men of Ephraim musteredand seized the water-points as far as Beth-Barah and the Jordan.	24 E Gedeone spedì messi per tutta la montagna di Ephraim che dicessero: Andate incontro a' Madianiti, e occupate le acque fino a Beth-bera, e lungo tutto il Giordano. E tutto Ephraim alzò le grida, e occupò le acque e il Giordano fino a Beth-bera.
25 They captured the two Midianite chieftains, Oreb and Zeeb; they killed Oreb at Oreb's Rock and Zeebat Zeeb's Winepress. They pursued Midian; and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on theother side of the Jordan.	25 E avendo presi due Madianiti, Oreb e Zeb, uccisero Oreb al masso di Oreb, e Zeb allo strettoio di Zeb. E inseguirono i Madianiti, e portaron le teste di Oreb e di Zeb a Gedeone di là dal Giordano.
