NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) got up very early, as did al the people who were with him; he pitched camp at En-Harod; the camp of Midian was north of his, under the Hill of Moreh in the val ey.	1 Yéroubbaal (c’est Gédéon) se leva de bon matin et s’en vint camper avec tout le peuple qui l’accompagnait, au-dessus d’En-Harod. Le camp de Madian était au nord de celui de Gédéon, dans la plaine, au pied du mont Moré.
2 Yahweh then said to Gideon, 'There are too many people with you for me to put Midian into their power;Israel might claim the credit for themselves at my expense: they might say, "My own hand has rescued me."	2 Yahvé dit à Gédéon: “Le peuple qui t’accompagne est trop nombreux. Si je livrais Madian entre tes mains, Israël pourrait en tirer gloire à mes dépens. Il dirait: Je me suis délivré moi-même.
3 So now make this proclamation to the people, "Anyone trembling with fear is to go back and watch fromMount Gilboa." ' Twenty-two thousand of the people went back, and ten thousand remained.	3 Tu vas donc proclamer ceci devant tout le peuple: Que celui qui a peur et qui tremble, s’en retourne.” Et Gédéon les mit à l’épreuve. 22 000 hommes du peuple s’en retournèrent et il en resta 10 000.
4 Yahweh said to Gideon, 'There are stil too many people. Take them down to the waterside and I shalsort them out for you there. If I say of someone, "He is to go with you," that man is to go with you. And if I say of anyone, "He is not to go with you," that man is not to go.'	4 Yahvé dit à Gédéon: “Le peuple est encore trop nombreux. Fais-les descendre au bord de l’eau, et là je ferai le tri. Celui pour lequel je te dirai: Qu’il aille avec toi! ira avec toi. Et celui pour lequel je te dirai: Qu’il n’aille pas avec toi! n’ira pas avec toi.”
5 So Gideon took the people down to the waterside, and Yahweh said to him, 'Al those who lap the waterwith their tongues, as a dog laps, put these on one side. And al those who kneel down to drink, put these on theother side.'	5 On fit donc descendre le peuple au bord de l’eau, et Yahvé dit à Gédéon: “Tu sépareras ceux qui laperont l’eau avec la langue, comme lape le chien, de ceux qui se mettront à genoux pour boire.”
6 The number of those who lapped with their hands to their mouth was three hundred; al the rest of thepeople had knelt to drink.	6 Ceux qui lapèrent dans leur main en la portant à leur bouche, furent au nombre de 300, car tout le reste du peuple s’était mis à genoux pour boire.
7 Yahweh then said to Gideon, 'With the three hundred who lapped the water, I shal rescue you and putMidian into your power. Let the people as a whole disperse to their homes.'	7 Yahvé dit alors à Gédéon: “Je vous sauverai et je livrerai Madian entre vos mains avec ces 300 hommes qui ont lapé l’eau. Que tout le reste du peuple s’en retourne chacun chez soi.”
8 So they took the people's provisions and their horns, and then Gideon sent al the Israelites back to theirtents, keeping only the three hundred. The camp of Midian was below his in the val ey.	8 On ramassa les vivres du peuple et leurs trompettes, puis Gédéon les renvoya chacun chez soi et ne garda que les 300 hommes. Le camp des Madianites était au-dessous de lui, dans la plaine.
9 Now it happened, that same night, that Yahweh said to him, 'Get up and go down to the camp. I amputting it into your power.	9 Durant cette nuit, Yahvé dit à Gédéon: “Descends donc vers le camp des Madianites, tu n’as rien à craindre d’eux.
10 If, however, you are nervous about going down, go down to the camp with your servant Purah;	10 Si cela te fait peur d’y descendre, descends avec ton serviteur Poura.
11 listen to what they are saying, and that wil encourage you to go down to the camp.' So, with hisservant Purah, he went down to the edge of the outposts of the camp.	11 Tu écouteras ce qu’ils disent et cela te donnera du courage pour aller attaquer leur camp.” Il descendit donc avec son serviteur Poura jusqu’aux avant-postes des Madianites.
12 Midian, Amalek and al the sons of the East were deployed in the val ey as thick as locusts; theircamels were as innumerable as the sand on the seashore.	12 Ceux-ci s’étaient installés sur toute la plaine avec Amalec et tous les fils de l’Orient. Ils fourmillaient comme les sauterelles et leurs chameaux étaient aussi nombreux que le sable du bord de la mer.
13 Gideon got there just as a man was tel ing his comrade a dream; he was saying, 'This was the dream Ihad: a cake made of barley bread came rolling into the camp of Midian; it came to a tent, struck against it andturned it upside down.'	13 Quand Gédéon arriva, un homme était en train de raconter un songe à son camarade: “J’ai eu un songe. C’était un pain d’orge qui déboulait dans le camp de Madian; il arriva jusqu’à la Tente, la heurta, et elle s’écroula.”
14 His comrade replied, 'This can only be the sword of Gideon son of Joash the Israelite. God has putMidian and the whole camp into his power.'	14 Son camarade lui répondit: “Ce ne peut pas être autre chose que l’épée de Gédéon, fils de Yoach, l’Israélite. Dieu a sûrement livré tout le camp de Madian entre ses mains.”
15 When Gideon heard the dream thus told and interpreted, he bowed in reverence; he then went back tothe camp of Israel and said, 'On your feet, for Yahweh has put the camp of Midian into your power!'	15 Lorsque Gédéon entendit le récit du songe et son interprétation, il se prosterna. Il rentra au camp d’Israël et dit: “Levez-vous! Yahvé a livré le camp de Madian entre nos mains.”
16 Gideon then divided his three hundred men into three groups. To each he gave a horn and an emptypitcher, with a torch inside each pitcher.	16 Il divisa les 300 hommes en trois groupes. À tous il leur remit des trompettes et des cruches vides avec des torches dans les cruches.
17 He said to them, 'Watch me, and do as I do. When I reach the edge of the camp, whatever I do, youmust do also.	17 Puis il leur dit: “Regardez-moi bien et faites comme je ferai. Dès que j’arriverai aux abords du camp des Madianites, vous ferez comme moi.
18 I shal blow my horn, and so wil all those who are with me; you too will then blow your horns al roundthe camp and shout, "For Yahweh and for Gideon!"	18 Lorsque je sonnerai de la trompette, moi et tous ceux qui sont avec moi, vous aussi vous sonnerez de la trompette tout autour du camp et vous crierez: Pour Yahvé et pour Gédéon!”
19 Gideon and his hundred companions reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middlewatch, when the new sentries had just been posted; they blew their horns and smashed the pitchers in theirhands.	19 Gédéon et les cent hommes qui l’accompagnaient arrivèrent aux abords du camp de Madian vers le milieu de la nuit, alors qu’on venait de relever les sentinelles. Ils sonnèrent de la trompette et brisèrent les cruches qu’ils portaient à la main.
20 The three groups blew their horns and smashed their pitchers; with their left hands they grasped thetorches, with their right hands the horns for blowing them; and they shouted, 'The sword for Yahweh and forGideon!'	20 Aussitôt les trois groupes sonnèrent de la trompette, brisèrent les cruches. Ils saisirent les torches de la main gauche tout en sonnant de la trompette qu’ils tenaient de la main droite, et ils s’écrièrent: “Épée pour Yahvé et pour Gédéon!”
21 And they stood stil , spaced out round the camp. The whole camp was thrown into confusion and theMidianites fled, shouting.	21 Mais ils restèrent chacun à sa place tout autour du camp. Tout le monde dans le camp se mit à courir, à crier et à fuir.
22 While the three hundred blew their horns, Yahweh made each man turn his sword against his comradethroughout the entire camp. They al fled as far as Beth-ha-Shittah in the direction of Zarethan, as far as thebank of Abel-Meholah opposite Tabbath.	22 Comme ils n’arrêtaient pas de sonner de la trompette, Yahvé fit que dans tout le camp chacun tourna son épée contre son frère. Ils s’enfuirent tous jusqu’à Beth-Ha-Chitta, du côté de Sartan, et jusqu’à la rive d’Abel-Méhola en face de Tabbat.
23 The men of Israel mustered from Naphtali, Asher and all Manasseh, and pursued Midian.	23 Les hommes d’Israël venus de Nephtali, d’Asher et de tout Manassé, se regroupèrent et poursuivirent les Madianites.
24 Gideon sent messengers throughout the highlands of Ephraim to say, 'Come down to meet Midian,seize the water-points ahead of them as far as Beth-Barah and the Jordan.' Al the men of Ephraim musteredand seized the water-points as far as Beth-Barah and the Jordan.	24 Gédéon envoya alors des messagers dans toute la montagne d’Éphraïm: “Descendez à la rencontre des Madianites, et avant qu’ils n’arrivent, occupez les gués jusqu’à Beth-Bara tout au long du Jourdain.”
25 They captured the two Midianite chieftains, Oreb and Zeeb; they killed Oreb at Oreb's Rock and Zeebat Zeeb's Winepress. They pursued Midian; and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on theother side of the Jordan.	25 Ils firent prisonniers les deux chefs de Madian, Oreb et Zéeb, ils tuèrent Oreb au Rocher-d’Oreb, et Zéeb, au Pressoir-de-Zéeb. Revenant de la poursuite des Madianites, ils rapportèrent à Gédéon, d’au-delà du Jourdain, les têtes d’Oreb et de Zéeb.
