1 Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) got up very early, as did al the people who were with him; he pitched camp at En-Harod; the camp of Midian was north of his, under the Hill of Moreh in the val ey.	1 - Adunque Jerobaal, ossia Gedeone, levatosi di notte venne con tutto il popolo alla fonte chiamata Arad. L'accampamento di Madian era nella vallata a settentrione di un alto colle.
2 Yahweh then said to Gideon, 'There are too many people with you for me to put Midian into their power;Israel might claim the credit for themselves at my expense: they might say, "My own hand has rescued me."	2 Il Signore disse a Gedeone: «Hai con te troppa gente e Madian non sarà dato nelle loro mani, affinchè Israele non si glori contro di me e dica: - Mi son liberato da me stesso. -
3 So now make this proclamation to the people, "Anyone trembling with fear is to go back and watch fromMount Gilboa." ' Twenty-two thousand of the people went back, and ten thousand remained.	3 Parla pertanto al popolo e in modo che tutti ti ascoltino ordina: - Chiunque è pauroso e timido se ne vada -». Si allontanarono dal monte Galaad e tornarono indietro ventiduemila del popolo, rimanendone soltanto diecimila.
4 Yahweh said to Gideon, 'There are stil too many people. Take them down to the waterside and I shalsort them out for you there. If I say of someone, "He is to go with you," that man is to go with you. And if I say of anyone, "He is not to go with you," that man is not to go.'	4 Il Signore disse a Gedeone: «Vi è ancora troppa gente: conducila alle acque e là li metterò alla prova; verranno teco solamente quelli a cui dirò di venire con te, mentre se ne ritorneranno quelli a cui proibirò d'andare».
5 So Gideon took the people down to the waterside, and Yahweh said to him, 'Al those who lap the waterwith their tongues, as a dog laps, put these on one side. And al those who kneel down to drink, put these on theother side.'	5 Quando il popolo scese alle acque, il Signore disse a Gedeone: «Quelli che lambiranno le acque, come sono soliti fare i cani, li metterai da una parte, e quelli che berranno curvandosi sulle ginocchia, li porrai da un'altra».
6 The number of those who lapped with their hands to their mouth was three hundred; al the rest of thepeople had knelt to drink.	6 Il numero di quelli che lambirono l'acqua portandola alla bocca colle mani fu di trecento uomini: tutto il resto della moltitudine aveva bevuto piegando il ginocchio.
7 Yahweh then said to Gideon, 'With the three hundred who lapped the water, I shal rescue you and putMidian into your power. Let the people as a whole disperse to their homes.'	7 Il Signore disse pertanto a Gedeone: «Coi trecento uomini che lambirono l'acqua io vi libererò e darò nelle tue mani Madian; tutti gli altri poi facciano ritorno a casa loro».
8 So they took the people's provisions and their horns, and then Gideon sent al the Israelites back to theirtents, keeping only the three hundred. The camp of Midian was below his in the val ey.	8 Presi quindi i cibi e le trombe in proporzione al numero, comandò a tutti gli altri di andarsene alle proprie tende, ed egli con trecento uomini si dispose al combattimento. L'accampamento di Madian era al di sotto nella valle.
9 Now it happened, that same night, that Yahweh said to him, 'Get up and go down to the camp. I amputting it into your power.	9 Nella stessa notte il Signore gli disse: «Sorgi e scendi nell'accampamento, poichè li ho dati in tua balìa.
10 If, however, you are nervous about going down, go down to the camp with your servant Purah;	10 Che se hai paura d'andar solo, venga teco il tuo servo Fara,
11 listen to what they are saying, and that wil encourage you to go down to the camp.' So, with hisservant Purah, he went down to the edge of the outposts of the camp.	11 e quando avrai inteso di che essi parlano, allora tu prenderai coraggio e con maggior sicurezza scenderai nell'accampamento nemico». Discese adunque insieme con Fara suo servo ad una parte dell'accampamento, dove erano le sentinelle dell'esercito.
12 Midian, Amalek and al the sons of the East were deployed in the val ey as thick as locusts; theircamels were as innumerable as the sand on the seashore.	12 Ora Madian, Amalec e tutti i popoli orientali giacevano sparsi per la valle, come una moltitudine di locuste: anche i cammelli erano innumerevoli, come l'arena che è sulla spiaggia del mare.
13 Gideon got there just as a man was tel ing his comrade a dream; he was saying, 'This was the dream Ihad: a cake made of barley bread came rolling into the camp of Midian; it came to a tent, struck against it andturned it upside down.'	13 Come Gedeone vi giunse, un uomo narrava al suo compagno un sogno e riferiva in questi termini quanto avea visto: «Ebbi un sogno e mi sembrava di vedere come un pane fatto di orzo cotto sotto la cenere rotolare e scendere nel campo di Madian, dove giunto colpì una tenda, e la rovesciò in modo da lasciarla atterrata».
14 His comrade replied, 'This can only be the sword of Gideon son of Joash the Israelite. God has putMidian and the whole camp into his power.'	14 Il compagno con cui parlava gli rispose: «Ciò non è altro che la spada di Gedeone figlio di Joas, uomo Israelita; giacchè il Signore ha dato nelle mani di lui Madian e tutto il suo accampamento».
15 When Gideon heard the dream thus told and interpreted, he bowed in reverence; he then went back tothe camp of Israel and said, 'On your feet, for Yahweh has put the camp of Midian into your power!'	15 All'intendere il sogno e la sua spiegazione, Gedeone adorò [il Signore] e tornato al campo d'Israele disse: «Levatevi, poichè il Signore ha dato nelle nostre mani l'accampamento di Madian».
16 Gideon then divided his three hundred men into three groups. To each he gave a horn and an emptypitcher, with a torch inside each pitcher.	16 E divisi i trecento uomini in tre schiere, diede loro in mano trombe e anfore vuote e fiaccole nelle anfore;
17 He said to them, 'Watch me, and do as I do. When I reach the edge of the camp, whatever I do, youmust do also.	17 poi disse loro: «Ciò che vedrete farsi da me, fatelo pur voi: io entrerò da un lato degli accampamenti e come farò io, così farete voi.
18 I shal blow my horn, and so wil all those who are with me; you too will then blow your horns al roundthe camp and shout, "For Yahweh and for Gideon!"	18 Quando sonerà la tromba che tengo in mano, voi pure darete fiato alle trombe tutto intorno all'accampamento e griderete: - Per il Signore e per Gedeone -».
19 Gideon and his hundred companions reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middlewatch, when the new sentries had just been posted; they blew their horns and smashed the pitchers in theirhands.	19 Entrati Gedeone e i trecento uomini che erano con lui da un lato dell'accampamento, mentre stava per cominciare la veglia della mezzanotte, e destatesi le sentinelle, cominciarono a dar fiato alle trombe e a spezzare tra di loro le anfore.
20 The three groups blew their horns and smashed their pitchers; with their left hands they grasped thetorches, with their right hands the horns for blowing them; and they shouted, 'The sword for Yahweh and forGideon!'	20 E dopo aver sonato in giro all'accampamento da tre parti e aver spezzate le anfore, presero con la mano sinistra le fiaccole, tenendo nella destra le trombe, a cui davano fiato, e gridando in pari tempo: «La spada del Signore e di Gedeone».
21 And they stood stil , spaced out round the camp. The whole camp was thrown into confusion and theMidianites fled, shouting.	21 Frattanto ciascuno rimaneva al suo posto attorno all'accampamento nemico, dove si notò prima un grande turbamento; poi gridando e urlando i nemici si misero in fuga.
22 While the three hundred blew their horns, Yahweh made each man turn his sword against his comradethroughout the entire camp. They al fled as far as Beth-ha-Shittah in the direction of Zarethan, as far as thebank of Abel-Meholah opposite Tabbath.	22 Frattanto i trecento uomini fermi continuavano a sonare le trombe, mentre il Signore agitava la spada in tutto l'accampamento, dove si uccidevano a vicenda
23 The men of Israel mustered from Naphtali, Asher and all Manasseh, and pursued Midian.	23 e donde fuggirono a Betsetta e sino ai confini di Abelmeula in Tebbat. Fra grandi clamori gli Israeliti di Neftali, di Aser e di tutto Manasse si diedero a inseguire Madian.
24 Gideon sent messengers throughout the highlands of Ephraim to say, 'Come down to meet Midian,seize the water-points ahead of them as far as Beth-Barah and the Jordan.' Al the men of Ephraim musteredand seized the water-points as far as Beth-Barah and the Jordan.	24 E Gedeone inviò messi per tutta la montagna di Efraim dicendo: «Scendete incontro a Madian e occupate le acque fino a Betbera e al Giordano». Tutto Efraim si pose allora a gridare e occupò le acque del Giordano fino a Betbera.
25 They captured the two Midianite chieftains, Oreb and Zeeb; they killed Oreb at Oreb's Rock and Zeebat Zeeb's Winepress. They pursued Midian; and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on theother side of the Jordan.	25 Poi presi due uomini di Madian, Oreb e Zeb, uccisero Oreb sulla roccia di Oreb e Zeb nel pressoio di Zeb e continuarono a inseguire Madian portando le teste di Oreb e di Zeb a Gedeone al di là del Giordano.
