1 From James, servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. Greetings to the twelve tribes of theDispersion.	1 יַעֲקֹב עֶבֶד אֱלֹהִים וַאֲדֹנֵינוּ יֵשׁוּעַ הַמָּשִׁיחַ שֹׁאֵל לִשְׁלוֹם שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר הַשְּׁבָטִים הַנְּפוֹצִים
2 My brothers, consider it a great joy when trials of many kinds come upon you,	2 אַךְ לְשִׂמְחָה חִשְׁבוּ לָכֶם אֶחָי כַּאֲשֶׁר תָּבֹאוּ בְּנִסְיֹנוֹת שׁוֹנִים
3 for you wel know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance, and	3 בְּדַעְתְּכֶם כִּי בֹחַן אֱמוּנַתְכֶם מֵבִיא לִידֵי סַבְלָנוּת
4 perseverance must complete its work so that you wil become ful y developed, complete, not deficient inany way.	4 וְהַסַּבְלָנוּת שְׁלֵמָה תִּהְיֶה בְּפָעֳלָהּ לִהְיוֹתְכֶם שְׁלֵמִים וּתְמִימִים וְלֹא תַחְסְרוּ כָּל־דָּבָר
5 Any of you who lacks wisdom must ask God, who gives to al generously and without scolding; it wil begiven.	5 וְאִישׁ מִכֶּם כִּי יֶחְסַר חָכְמָה יְבַקְשֶׁנָּה מֵאֱלֹהִים הַנּוֹתֵן לַכֹּל בִּנְדִיבָה וּבְאֵין גְּעָרָה וְתִנָּתֵן לוֹ
6 But the prayer must be made with faith, and no trace of doubt, because a person who has doubts is likethe waves thrown up in the sea by the buffeting of the wind.	6 רַק יְבַקֵּשׁ בֶּאֱמוּנָה וּבִבְלִי סָפֵק כִּי־בַעַל סָפֵק דּוֹמֶה לְגַלֵּי הַיָּם הַסֹּעֵר וְהַנִּגְרָשׁ
7 That sort of person, in two minds,	7 וְהָאִישׁ הַהוּא אַל־יְדַמֶּה בְנַפְשׁוֹ כִּי־יִשָּׂא דָבָר מֵאֵת יְהוָֹה
8 inconsistent in every activity, must not expect to receive anything from the Lord.	8 אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר חָלַק לִבּוֹ הֲפַכְפָּךְ הוּא בְּכָל־דְּרָכָיו
9 It is right that the brother in humble circumstances should glory in being lifted up,	9 אֲבָל הָאָח הַשָּׁפֵל יִתְהַלֵּל בְּרוֹמְמֻתוֹ
10 and the rich in being brought low. For the rich wil last no longer than the wild flower;	10 וְהֶעָשִׁיר יִתְהַלֵּל בְּשִׁפְלוּתוֹ כִּי יַעֲבֹר כְּצִיץ הֶחָצִיר
11 the scorching sun comes up, and the grass withers, its flower falls, its beauty is lost. It is the samewith the rich: in the middle of a busy life, the rich wil wither.	11 כִּי זָרַח הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ בְּחַמָּתוֹ וַיְיַבֵּשׁ אֶת־הֶחָצִיר וַיִּבֹּל צִיצוֹ וְחֶסֶד מַרְאֵהוּ אָבָד כֵּן יִבּוֹל הֶעָשִׁיר בַּהֲלִיכוֹתָיו
12 Blessed is anyone who perseveres when trials come. Such a person is of proven worth and will winthe prize of life, the crown that the Lord has promised to those who love him.	12 אַשְׁרֵי הָאִישׁ הָעֹמֵד בְּנִסְיוֹנוֹ כִּי כַּאֲשֶׁר נִבְחַן יִשָּׂא עֲטֶרֶת הַחַיִּים אֲשֶׁר־הִבְטִיחַ יְהוָֹה לְאֹהֲבָיו
13 Never, when you are being put to the test, say, 'God is tempting me'; God cannot be tempted by evil,and he does not put anybody to the test .	13 אַל־יֹאמַר הַמְנֻסֶּה הָאֱלֹהִים נִסָּנִי כִּי הָאֱלֹהִים אֵינֶנּוּ מְנֻסֶּה בָּרָע וְהוּא לֹא־יְנַסֶּה אִישׁ
14 Everyone is put to the test by being attracted and seduced by that person's own wrong desire.	14 כִּי אִם־יְנֻסֶּה כָל־אִישׁ בְּתַאֲוַת נַפְשׁוֹ אֲשֶׁר תְּסִיתֵהוּ וּתְפַתֵּהוּ
15 Then the desire conceives and gives birth to sin, and when sin reaches ful growth, it gives birth todeath.	15 וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן הָרְתָה הַתַּאֲוָה וַתֵּלֶד חֵטְא וְהַחֵטְא כִּי נִשְׁלַם יוֹלִיד אֶת־הַמָּוֶת
16 Make no mistake about this, my dear brothers:	16 אַל־תִּתְעוּ אַחַי אֲהוּבָי
17 al that is good, al that is perfect, is given us from above; it comes down from the Father of al light;with him there is no such thing as alteration, no shadow caused by change.	17 כָּל־מַתָּנָה טוֹבָה וְכָל־מִנְחָה שְׁלֵמָה תֵּרֵד מִמַּעַל מֵאֵת אֲבִי הָאוֹרוֹת אֲשֶׁר חִלּוּף וְכָל־צֵל שִׁנּוּי אֵין־עִמּוֹ
18 By his own choice he gave birth to us by the message of the truth so that we should be a sort of first-fruits of all his creation.	18 הוּא בְחֶפְצוֹ יָלַד אוֹתָנוּ בִּדְבַר הָאֱמֶת לִהְיוֹתֵנוּ כְּמוֹ רֵאשִׁית בִּכּוּרֵי יְצוּרָיו
19 Remember this, my dear brothers: everyone should be quick to listen but slow to speak and slow tohuman anger;	19 עַל־זֹאת אַחַי אֲהוּבַי יְהִי כָל־אִישׁ מָהִיר לִשְׁמֹעַ קָשֶׁה לְדַבֵּר וְקָשֶׁה לִכְעוֹס
20 God's saving justice is never served by human anger;	20 כִּי־כַעַס אָדָם לֹא יִפְעַל צִדְקַת אֱלֹהִים
21 so do away with al impurities and remnants of evil. Humbly welcome the Word which has beenplanted in you and can save your souls.	21 לָכֵן הָסִירוּ מֵעֲלֵיכֶם כָּל־טִנּוּף וְתַרְבּוּת רָעָה וְקַבְּלוּ בַעֲנָוָה אֶת־הַדָּבָר הַנָּטוּעַ בָּכֶם אֲשֶׁר יָכֹל לְהוֹשִׁיעַ אֶת־נַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶם
22 But you must do what the Word tel s you and not just listen to it and deceive yourselves.	22 וֶהֱיוּ עֹשֵׂי הַדָּבָר וְלֹא שֹׁמְעָיו לְבָד לְרַמּוֹת אֶת־נַפְשְׁכֶם
23 Anyone who listens to the Word and takes no action is like someone who looks at his own features ina mirror and,	23 כִּי הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר רַק־שֹׁמֵעַ אֶת־הַדָּבָר וְלֹא עֹשֵׂהוּ נִמְשָׁל לְאִישׁ מַבִּיט אֶת־תֹּאַר הֲוָיָתוֹ בְּמַרְאָה
24 once he has seen what he looks like, goes off and immediately forgets it.	24 כִּי הִבִּיט אֶל־מַרְאֵהוּ וַיֵּלֶךְ לוֹ וּבְרֶגַע שָׁכַח מַה־תָּאֳרוֹ
25 But anyone who looks steadily at the perfect law of freedom and keeps to it -- not listening andforgetting, but putting it into practice -- will be blessed in every undertaking.	25 אֲבָל הַמַּשְׁקִיף בַּתּוֹרָה הַשְּׁלֵמָה תּוֹרַת הַחֵרוּת וּמַחֲזִיק בָּהּ אֲשֶׁר אֵינֶנּוּ שֹׁמֵעַ וְשָׁכֵחַ כִּי אִם־עֹשֶׂה בְּפֹעַל אַשְׁרֵי הָאִישׁ הַהוּא בְּמַעֲשֵׂהוּ
26 Nobody who fails to keep a tight rein on the tongue can claim to be religious; this is mere self-deception; that person's religion is worthless.	26 אִישׁ מִכֶּם אִם־יְדַמֶּה לִהְיוֹת עֹבֵד אֱלֹהִים וְאֵינֶנּוּ שָׂם רֶסֶן לִלְשֹׁנוֹ כִּי אִם־מַתְעֶה הוּא אֶת־לְבָבוֹ עֲבֹדָתוֹ אַךְ־לָרִיק תִּהְיֶה
27 Pure, unspoilt religion, in the eyes of God our Father, is this: coming to the help of orphans andwidows in their hardships, and keeping oneself uncontaminated by the world.	27 זֹאת הָעֲבוֹדָה הַטְּהוֹרָה וְהַבָּרָה לִפְנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים אָבִינוּ לְבַקֵּר אֶת־הַיְתוֹמִים וְהָאַלְמָנוֹת בְּלַחֲצָם וְלִשְׁמֹר אֶת־עַצְמוֹ נָקִי מֵחֶלְאַת הָעוֹלָם
