NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
The Spirit has explicitly said that during the last times some wil desert the faith and pay attention todeceitful spirits and doctrines that come from devils,1 Now the Spirit manifestly saith, that in the last times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to spirits of error, and doctrines of devils,
seduced by the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are branded as though with a red-hot iron:2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy, and having their conscience seared,
they forbid marriage and prohibit foods which God created to be accepted with thanksgiving by all whobelieve and who know the truth.3 Forbidding to marry, to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving by the faithful, and by them that have known the truth.
Everything God has created is good, and no food is to be rejected, provided it is received withthanksgiving:4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be rejected that is received with thanksgiving:
the word of God and prayer make it holy.5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
If you put al this to the brothers, you wil be a good servant of Christ Jesus and show that you havereal y digested the teaching of the faith and the good doctrine which you have always fol owed.6 These things proposing to the brethren, thou shalt be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished up in the words of faith, and of the good doctrine which thou hast attained unto.
Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales. Train yourself for religion.7 But avoid foolish and old wives' fables: and exercise thyself unto godliness.
Physical exercise is useful enough, but the usefulness of religion is unlimited, since it holds out promiseboth for life here and now and for the life to come;8 For bodily exercise is profitable to little: but godliness is profitable to all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.
that is a saying that you can rely on and nobody should doubt it.9 A faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.
I mean that the point of al our toiling and battling is that we have put our trust in the living God and heis the Saviour of the whole human race but particularly of al believers.10 For therefore we labor and are reviled, because we hope in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, especially of the faithful.
This is what you are to instruct and teach.11 These things command and teach.
Let no one disregard you because you are young, but be an example to al the believers in the way youspeak and behave, and in your love, your faith and your purity.12 Let no man despise thy youth: but be thou an example of the faithful in word, in conversation, in charity, in faith, in chastity.
Until I arrive, devote yourself to reading to the people, encouraging and teaching.13 Till I come, attend unto reading, to exhortation, and to doctrine.
You have in you a spiritual gift which was given to you when the prophets spoke and the body of elderslaid their hands on you; do not neglect it.14 Neglect not the grace that is in thee, which was given thee by prophesy, with imposition of the hands of the priesthood.
Let this be your care and your occupation, and everyone wil be able to see your progress.15 Meditate upon these things, be wholly in these things: that thy profiting may be manifest to all.
Be conscientious about what you do and what you teach; persevere in this, and in this way you wilsave both yourself and those who listen to you.16 Take heed to thyself and to doctrine: be earnest in them. For in doing this thou shalt both save thyself and them that hear thee.
