NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
The whole community of the Israelites assembled at Shiloh, and the Tent of Meeting was set up there;the whole country had been subdued for them.1 Congregatique sunt omnes filii Israel in Silo ibique fixe runt tabernaculum conventus, et fuit eis terra subiecta.
But among the Israelites there were still seven tribes left who had not received their heritage.2 Remanserant autem filiorum Israel septem tribus, quae necdum acceperant possessiones suas.
Joshua then said to the Israelites, 'How much more time are you going to waste before you go andtake possession of the country which Yahweh, God of your ancestors, has given to you?3 Ad quos Iosue ait: “ Usquequo marcetis ignavia et non intratis ad possidendam terram, quam Dominus, Deus patrum vestrorum, dedit vobis?
Choose three men from each tribe for me to send al over the country so that they can make a surveywith a view to their inheritances and then come back to me.4 Eligite de singulis tribubus ternos viros, ut mittam eos, et surgant atque circumeant terram et describant eam iuxta numerum uniuscuiusque multitudinis referantque ad me, quod descripserint.
They wil divide the country into seven portions. Judah wil remain in his territory in the south, andthose of the House of Joseph wil remain in their territory in the north.5 Dividite vobis terram in septem partes: Iudas sit in terminis suis in australi plaga, et domus Ioseph in aquilone.
You must survey the country in seven sections and bring your findings to me here, so that I can castlots for you here, in the presence of Yahweh our God.6 Reliquam terram in septem partes describite; et huc afferetis ad me, ut coram Domino Deo nostro mittam vobis hic sortem,
The Levites, however, wil have no portion with the rest of you; the priesthood of Yahweh wil be theirheritage. As regards Gad and Reuben and the half-tribe of Manasseh, they have received their heritage on thefurther, eastern side of the Jordan, the one given them by Moses, servant of Yahweh.'7 quia non est inter vos pars Levitarum, sed sacerdotium Domini est eorum hereditas. Gad autem et Ruben et dimidia tribus Manasse iam acceperant possessiones suas trans Iordanem ad orientalem plagam, quas dedit eis Moyses famulus Domini ”.
The men stood up and set off. To those who were to survey the country Joshua gave this order, 'Startout, then, go al over the country, survey it, and then come back to me; and I shal cast lots for you here, in thepresence of Yahweh, at Shiloh.'8 Cumque surrexissent viri, ut pergerent ad describendam terram, praecepit eis Iosue dicens: “Circuite terram et describite eam ac revertimini ad me, ut hic coram Domino in Silo mittam vobis sortem ”.
The men left, went al over the country and surveyed it by towns, in seven sections, writing down theirfindings in a book, and then went back to Joshua in the camp at Shiloh.9 Itaque perrexerunt et lustrantes terram secundum urbes in septem partes diviserunt scribentes in volumine; reversique sunt ad Iosue in castra Silo.
Joshua cast lots for them in Yahweh's presence at Shiloh, and there Joshua divided the countrybetween the Israelites, share by share.10 Qui misit eis sortes coram Domino in Silo divisitque ibi terram filiis Israel secundum partes eorum.
A portion fell first to the tribe of the sons of Benjamin, by clans: the territory of their portion laybetween the sons of Judah and the sons of Joseph.11 Et ascendit sors prima filiorum Beniamin per familias suas, ut possiderent terram inter filios Iudae et filios Ioseph.
Their northern frontier began at the Jordan, went up the flank of Jericho to the north, climbedwestwards through the highlands and came out at the desert of Beth-Aven.12 Fuitque terminus eorum contra aquilonem a Iordane pergens iuxta latus Iericho septentrionalis plagae et inde contra occidentem ad montana conscendens et perveniens in solitudinem Bethaven;
Thence, the frontier went on to Luz, on the southern flank of Luz -- now Bethel-and then down toAtaroth-Arach, on the mountain south of Lower Beth-Horon.13 atque pertransiens iuxta Luzam ad meridiem — ipsa est Bethel — descendit in Atarothaddar in montem, qui est ad meridiem Bethoron inferioris,
At this westerly point, the frontier curved round and turned south, from the mountain facing Beth-Horon from the south and came out at Kiriath-Baal, now Kiriath-Jearim, a town of the sons of Judah. That wasthe western side.14 et inclinatur vergens contra mare ad meridiem a monte, qui respicit Bethoron contra meridiem; suntque exitus eius in Cariathbaal, quae vocatur et Cariathiarim, urbem filiorum Iudae. Haec est plaga ad occidentem.
This was the south side: from the tip of Kiriath-Jearim, the frontier went to Gasin and came out nearthe spring of the Waters of Nephtoah,15 In plaga autem ad meridiem, ex parte Cariathiarim egreditur terminus in Gasim et pervenit usque ad fontem aquarum Nephtoa
it then went down to the edge of the mountain facing the Val ey of Hinnom, in the Valley of theRephaim to the north; it then went down into the Val ey of Hinnom, past the southerly flank of the Jebusite, andwent down to En-Rogel.16 descenditque in extremam partem montis, qui respicit vallem Benennom et est contra septentrionalem plagam in extrema parte vallis Raphaim; descenditque in vallem Ennom, iuxta latus Iebusaei ad austrum, et pervenit ad fontem Rogel
It then curved northwards, coming out at En-Shemesh, and came out at the stone circle opposite theAscent of Adummim, then went down to the Stone of Bohan son of Reuben.17 transiens ad aquilonem et egrediens ad Ensemes (id est fontem Solis). Et pertransit usque ad Galiloth (hi sunt circuli), qui sunt e regione ascensus Adommim, descenditque ad Abenboen (id est lapidem Boen) filii Ruben
It then went on to Cheteph on the flank of Beth-ha-Arabah northwards, and went down into theArabah;18 et pertransit ex latere aquilonis Betharaba descenditque in Arabam.
the frontier then passed round the northern flank of Beth-Hoglah, and the frontier came out at thenorthern bay of the Salt Sea, at the southern end of the Jordan. Such was the southern frontier.19 Et praetergreditur contra aquilonem Bethagla; suntque exitus eius contra linguam maris Salsissimi ab aquilone in fine Iordanis. Haec est australis plaga.
The Jordan itself formed the frontier on the east. Such was the heritage of the sons of Benjamin asdefined by their frontier, by clans.20 Iordanis autem est terminus ab oriente. Haec est possessio filiorum Beniamin per terminos suos in circuitu secundum familias suas.
The towns of the tribe of the sons of Benjamin, by clans, were:21 Fueruntque civitates eius: Iericho et Bethagla et Ameccasis
Jericho, Beth-Hoglah, Emek-Keziz;22 et Betharaba et Semaraim et Bethel
Beth-Arabah, Zemaraim, Bethel; Avvim, Parah, Ophrah;23 et Avim et Phara et Ophra,
Chephar-Ammoni, Ophni, Geba: twelve towns and their vil ages.24 Capharemona et Ophni et Gabaa: civitates duodecim et villae earum.
Gibeon, Ramah, Beeroth;25 Gabaon et Rama et Beroth
Mizpeh, Chephirah, Mozah;26 et Maspha et Cephira et Mosa
Rekem, Irpeel, Taralah;27 et Recem, Iaraphel et Tharala
Zela-ha-Eleph, the Jebusite -- that is, Jerusalem -- Gibeah and Kiriath: fourteen towns with theirvil ages. Such was the heritage of the sons of Benjamin, by clans.28 et Sela, Eleph et Iebus, quae est Ierusalem, Gabaath et Cariath: civitates quattuordecim et villae earum. Haec est possessio filiorum Beniamin iuxta familias suas.
