NEW JERUSALEMGREEK BIBLE
I want to make quite clear to you, brothers, what the message of the gospel that I preached to you is;you accepted it and took your stand on it,1 Σας φανερονω δε, αδελφοι, το ευαγγελιον, το οποιον εκηρυξα προς εσας, το οποιον και παρελαβετε, εις το οποιον και ιστασθε,
and you are saved by it, if you keep to the message I preached to you; otherwise your coming tobelieve was in vain.2 δια του οποιου και σωζεσθε, τινι τροπω σας εκηρυξα αυτο, αν φυλαττητε αυτο, εκτος εαν επιστευσατε ματαιως.
The tradition I handed on to you in the first place, a tradition which I had myself received, was thatChrist died for our sins, in accordance with the scriptures,3 Διοτι παρεδωκα εις εσας εν πρωτοις εκεινο, το οποιον και παρελαβον, οτι ο Χριστος απεθανε δια τας αμαρτιας ημων κατα τας γραφας,
and that he was buried; and that on the third day, he was raised to life, in accordance with thescriptures;4 και οτι εταφη, και οτι ανεστη την τριτην ημεραν κατα τας γραφας,
and that he appeared to Cephas; and later to the Twelve;5 και οτι εφανη εις τον Κηφαν, επειτα εις τους δωδεκα?
and next he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom arestill with us, though some have fal en asleep;6 μετα ταυτα εφανη εις πεντακοσιους και επεκεινα αδελφους δια μιας, εκ των οποιων οι πλειοτεροι μενουσιν εως τωρα, τινες δε και εκοιμηθησαν?
then he appeared to James, and then to all the apostles.7 επειτα εφανη εις τον Ιακωβον, επειτα εις παντας τους αποστολους?
Last of al he appeared to me too, as though I was a child born abnormally.8 τελευταιον δε παντων εφανη και εις εμε ως εις εκτρωμα.
For I am the least of the apostles and am not real y fit to be called an apostle, because I had beenpersecuting the Church of God;9 Διοτι εγω ειμαι ο ελαχιστος των αποστολων, οστις δεν ειμαι αξιος να ονομαζωμαι αποστολος, διοτι κατεδιωξα την εκκλησιαν του Θεου?
but what I am now, I am through the grace of God, and the grace which was given to me has notbeen wasted. Indeed, I have worked harder than all the others -- not I, but the grace of God which is with me.10 αλλα χαριτι Θεου ειμαι οτι ειμαι?
Anyway, whether it was they or I, this is what we preach and what you believed.11 Ειτε λοιπον εγω ειτε εκεινοι, ουτω κηρυττομεν και ουτως επιστευσατε.
Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you be saying that there is no resurrection of the dead?12 Εαν δε ο Χριστος κηρυττηται οτι ανεστη εκ νεκρων, πως τινες μεταξυ σας λεγουσιν οτι αναστασις νεκρων δεν ειναι;
If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ cannot have been raised either,13 Και εαν αναστασις νεκρων δεν ηναι, ουδ' ο Χριστος ανεστη?
and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is without substance, and so is your faith.14 και αν ο Χριστος δεν ανεστη, ματαιον αρα ειναι το κηρυγμα ημων, ματαια δε και η πιστις σας.
What is more, we have proved to be false witnesses to God, for testifying against God that he raisedChrist to life when he did not raise him -- if it is true that the dead are not raised.15 Ευρισκομεθα δε και ψευδομαρτυρες του Θεου, διοτι εμαρτυρησαμεν περι του Θεου οτι ανεστησε τον Χριστον, τον οποιον δεν ανεστησεν, εαν καθ' υποθεσιν δεν ανασταινωνται νεκροι.
For, if the dead are not raised, neither is Christ;16 Διοτι εαν δεν ανασταινωνται νεκροι, ουδ' ο Χριστος ανεστη?
and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is pointless and you have not, after al , been releasedfrom your sins.17 αλλ' εαν ο Χριστος δεν ανεστη, ματαια η πιστις σας?
In addition, those who have fal en asleep in Christ are utterly lost.18 Αρα και οι κοιμηθεντες εν Χριστω απωλεσθησαν.
If our hope in Christ has been for this life only, we are of al people the most pitiable.19 Εαν εν ταυτη τη ζωη μονον ελπιζωμεν εις τον Χριστον, ειμεθα ελεεινοτεροι παντων των ανθρωπων.
In fact, however, Christ has been raised from the dead, as the first-fruits of al who have fal enasleep.20 Αλλα τωρα ο Χριστος ανεστη εκ νεκρων, εγεινεν απαρχη των κεκοιμημενων.
As it was by one man that death came, so through one man has come the resurrection of the dead.21 Διοτι επειδη ο θανατος ηλθε δι' ανθρωπου, ουτω και δι' ανθρωπου η αναστασις των νεκρων.
Just as al die in Adam, so in Christ al wil be brought to life;22 Επειδη καθως παντες αποθνησκουσιν εν τω Αδαμ, ουτω και παντες θελουσι ζωοποιηθη εν τω Χριστω.
but all of them in their proper order: Christ the first-fruits, and next, at his coming, those who belongto him.23 Εκαστος ομως κατα την ιδιαν αυτου ταξιν?
After that wil come the end, when he will hand over the kingdom to God the Father, having abolishedevery principality, every ruling force and power.24 Υστερον θελει εισθαι το τελος, οταν παραδωση την βασιλειαν εις τον Θεον και Πατερα, οταν καταργηση πασαν αρχην και πασαν εξουσιαν και δυναμιν.
For he is to be king until he has made his enemies his footstool,25 Διοτι πρεπει να βασιλευη εωσου θεση παντας τους εχθρους υπο τους ποδας αυτου.
and the last of the enemies to be done away with is death, for he has put al things under his feet.26 Εσχατος εχθρος καταργειται ο θανατος?
But when it is said everything is subjected, this obviously cannot include the One who subjectedeverything to him.27 διοτι παντα υπεταξεν υπο τους ποδας αυτου.
When everything has been subjected to him, then the Son himself wil be subjected to the One whohas subjected everything to him, so that God may be al in al .28 Οταν δε υποταχθωσιν εις αυτον τα παντα, τοτε και αυτος ο Υιος θελει υποταχθη εις τον υποταξαντα εις αυτον τα παντα, δια να ηναι ο Θεος τα παντα εν πασιν.
Otherwise, what are people up to who have themselves baptised on behalf of the dead? If the deadare not raised at al , what is the point of being baptised on their behalf?29 Επειδη τι θελουσι καμει οι βαπτιζομενοι υπερ των νεκρων, εαν τωοντι οι νεκροι δεν ανασταινωνται, δια τι και βαπτιζονται υπερ των νεκρων;
And what about us? Why should we endanger ourselves every hour of our lives?30 δια τι και ημεις κινδυνευομεν πασαν ωραν;
I swear by the pride that I take in you, in Christ Jesus our Lord, that I face death every day.31 Καθ' ημεραν αποθνησκω, μα την εις εσας καυχησιν μου, την οποιαν εχω εν Χριστω Ιησου τω Κυριω ημων.
If I fought wild animals at Ephesus in a purely human perspective, what had I to gain by it?32 Εαν κατα ανθρωπον επολεμησα με θηρια εν Εφεσω, τι το οφελος εις εμε; αν οι νεκροι δεν ανασταινωνται, ας φαγωμεν και ας πιωμεν, διοτι αυριον αποθνησκομεν.
If the dead are not going to be raised, then Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall be dead.33 Μη πλανασθε?
So do not let anyone lead you astray, 'Bad company corrupts good ways.' Wake up from your stuporas you should and leave sin alone; some of you have no understanding of God; I tel you this to instil someshame in you.34 Συνελθετε εις εαυτους κατα το δικαιον και μη αμαρτανετε?
Someone may ask: How are dead people raised, and what sort of body do they have when theycome?35 Αλλα θελει τις ειπει? Πως ανασταινονται οι νεκροι; και με ποιον σωμα ερχονται;
How foolish! What you sow must die before it is given new life;36 Αφρον, εκεινο το οποιον συ σπειρεις, δεν ζωογονειται εαν δεν αποθανη?
and what you sow is not the body that is to be, but only a bare grain, of wheat I dare say, or someother kind;37 και εκεινο το οποιον σπειρεις, δεν σπειρεις το σωμα το οποιον μελλει να γεινη, αλλα γυμνον κοκκον, σιτου τυχον η τινος των λοιπων.
it is God who gives it the sort of body that he has chosen for it, and for each kind of seed its own kindof body.38 Ο δε Θεος διδει εις αυτο σωμα καθως ηθελησε, και εις εκαστον των σπερματων το ιδιαιτερον αυτου σωμα.
Not al flesh is the same flesh: there is human flesh; animals have another kind of flesh, birds anotherand fish yet another.39 Πασα σαρξ δεν ειναι η αυτη σαρξ, αλλα αλλη μεν σαρξ των ανθρωπων, αλλη δε σαρξ των κτηνων, αλλη δε των ιχθυων και αλλη των πτηνων.
Then there are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies; the heavenly have a splendour of their own, andthe earthly a different splendour.40 Ειναι και σωματα επουρανια και σωματα επιγεια?
The sun has its own splendour, the moon another splendour, and the stars yet another splendour;and the stars differ among themselves in splendour.41 Αλλη δοξα ειναι του ηλιου, και αλλη δοξα της σεληνης, και αλλη δοξα των αστερων?
It is the same too with the resurrection of the dead: what is sown is perishable, but what is raised isimperishable;42 Ουτω και η αναστασις των νεκρων.
what is sown is contemptible but what is raised is glorious; what is sown is weak, but what is raisedis powerful;43 σπειρεται εν ατιμια, ανισταται εν δοξη?
what is sown is a natural body, and what is raised is a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, thereis a spiritual body too.44 σπειρεται σωμα ζωικον, ανισταται σωμα πνευματικον.
So the first man, Adam, as scripture says, became a living soul; and the last Adam has become alife-giving spirit.45 Ουτως ειναι και γεγραμμενον?
But first came the natural body, not the spiritual one; that came only afterwards.46 Πλην ουχι πρωτον το πνευματικον, αλλα το ζωικον, επειτα το πνευματικον.
The first man, being made of earth, is earthly by nature; the second man is from heaven.47 Ο πρωτος ανθρωπος ειναι εκ της γης χοικος, ο δευτερος ανθρωπος ο Κυριος εξ ουρανου.
The earthly man is the pattern for earthly people, the heavenly man for heavenly ones.48 Οποιος ο χοικος, τοιουτοι και οι χοικοι, και οποιος ο επουρανιος, τοιουτοι και οι επουρανιοι?
And as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so we shal bear the likeness of the heavenlyone.49 και καθως εφορεσαμεν την εικονα του χοικου, θελομεν φορεσει και την εικονα του επουρανιου.
What I am saying, brothers, is that mere human nature cannot inherit the kingdom of God: what isperishable cannot inherit what is imperishable.50 Τουτο δε λεγω, αδελφοι, οτι σαρξ και αιμα βασιλειαν Θεου δεν δυνανται να κληρονομησωσιν, ουδε η φθορα κληρονομει την αφθαρσιαν.
Now I am going to tel you a mystery: we are not al going to fal asleep,51 Ιδου, μυστηριον λεγω προς εσας?
but we are al going to be changed, instantly, in the twinkling of an eye, when the last trumpetsounds. The trumpet is going to sound, and then the dead wil be raised imperishable, and we shal be changed,52 εν μια στιγμη, εν ριπη οφθαλμου, εν τη εσχατη σαλπιγγι?
because this perishable nature of ours must put on imperishability, this mortal nature must put onimmortality.53 Διοτι πρεπει το φθαρτον τουτο να ενδυθη αφθαρσιαν, και το θνητον τουτο να ενδυθη αθανασιαν.
And after this perishable nature has put on imperishability and this mortal nature has put onimmortality, then wil the words of scripture come true: Death is swal owed up in victory.54 Οταν δε το φθαρτον τουτο ενδυθη αφθαρσιαν και το θνητον τουτο ενδυθη αθανασιαν, τοτε θελει γεινει ο λογος ο γεγραμμενος?
Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting?55 Που, θανατε, το κεντρον σου; που, αδη, η νικη σου;
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin comes from the Law.56 το δε κεντρον του θανατου ειναι η αμαρτια, και η δυναμις της αμαρτιας ο νομος.
Thank God, then, for giving us the victory through Jesus Christ our Lord.57 Αλλα χαρις εις τον Θεον, οστις διδει εις ημας την νικην δια του Κυριου ημων Ιησου Χριστου.
So, my dear brothers, keep firm and immovable, always abounding in energy for the Lord's work,being sure that in the Lord none of your labours is wasted.58 Ωστε, αδελφοι μου αγαπητοι, γινεσθε στερεοι, αμετακινητοι, περισσευοντες παντοτε εις το εργον του Κυριου, γινωσκοντες οτι ο κοπος σας δεν ειναι ματαιος εν Κυριω.
