1 Passing through Amphipolis and Apol onia, they eventual y reached Thessalonica, where there was aJewish synagogue.	1 Passando per Amfipoli, e per Apollonia, arrivarono a Tessalonica, dove era la Sinagoga de' Giudei.
2 Paul as usual went in and for three consecutive Sabbaths developed the arguments from scripture forthem,	2 E Paolo secondo il suo solito andò da loro, e per tre sabati disputò con essi sopra le scritture,
3 explaining and proving how it was ordained that the Christ should suffer and rise from the dead. 'Andthe Christ', he said, 'is this Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you.'	3 Facendo aperto, e dimostrando, come il Cristo dovea patire, e risuscitare da morte: e come questo è Gesù Cristo, cui (diceva) io annunzio a voi.
4 Some of them were convinced and joined Paul and Silas, and so did a great many godfearing peopleand Greeks, as wel as a number of the leading women.	4 E alcuni di essi credettero, e si unirono con Paolo, e Sila, come pure una gran moltitudine di proseliti, e di Gentili, e non poche matrone primarie.
5 The Jews, ful of resentment, enlisted the help of a gang from the market place, stirred up a crowd, andsoon had the whole city in an uproar. They made for Jason's house, hoping to bring them before the People'sAssembly;	5 Ma i Giudei, mossi da zelo, prendendo seco alcuni cattivi uomini del volgo, e fatta gente, misero la città in tumulto: e attorniata la casa di Giasone cercavano di tirarli davanti al popolo.
6 however, they found only Jason and some of the brothers, and these they dragged before the citycouncil, shouting, 'The people who have been turning the whole world upside down have come here now;	6 E non avendoli trovali, strascinaron Giasone, e alcuni fratelli ai capi della città, gridando: Que' che mettono sottosopra la terra, sono venuti anche qua,
7 they have been staying at Jason's. They have broken Caesar's edicts by claiming that there is anotherking, Jesus.'	7 A' quali ha dato, ricetto Giasone. E tutti costoro fanno contro gli editti di Cesare, dicendo esservi un altro Re, Gesù.
8 Hearing this, the citizens and the city council ors were alarmed,	8 E commosser la moltitudine, e i magistrati, che udivano tali cose.
9 and they made Jason and the rest give security before setting them free.	9 Ma fatto dare mallevadore a Giasone, e agli altri gli rimandarono.
10 When it was dark the brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away to Beroea, where they went tothe Jewish synagogue as soon as they arrived.	10 I fratelli però immediatamente la notte avviarono Paolo, e Sila a Berea. I quali subito arrivati andarono alla sinagoga de' Giudei.
11 Here the Jews were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they welcomed the wordvery readily; every day they studied the scriptures to check whether it was true.	11 Questi erano più generosi di quelli, che erano in Tessalonica, e ricevettero la parola con tutta avidità, esaminando ogni dì nelle scritture, se le cose stesser cosi.
12 Many of them became believers, and so did many Greek women of high standing and a number ofthe men.	12 E molti di loro credettero, e delle nobili donne Gentili, e degli uomini non pochi.
13 When the Jews of Thessalonica came to learn that the word of God was being preached by Paul inBeroea as wel , they went there to make trouble and stir up the people.	13 Ma come ebber inteso i Giudei in Tessalonica, che anche in Berea era stata predicata da Paolo la parola di Dio, vi si portarono a incitare, e muovere a tumulto la moltitudine.
14 So the brothers arranged for Paul to go immediately as far as the coast, leaving Silas and Timothybehind.	14 E subito allora i fratelli mandaron via Paolo, perché andasse fino al mare: e si restaron ivi Sila, e Timoteo.
15 Paul's escort took him as far as Athens, and went back with instructions for Silas and Timothy torejoin Paul as soon as they could.	15 Quelli poi, che accompagnavano Paolo, lo condusser fino ad Atene, e avuto ordine da lui per Sila, e Timoteo che speditamente andasser a lui, si partirono.
16 Paul waited for them in Athens and there his whole soul was revolted at the sight of a city given overto idolatry.	16 E mentre Paolo gli attendeva in Atene, si affliggeva in lui il suo spirito, veggendo quella città abbandonata all'idolatria.
17 In the synagogue he debated with the Jews and the godfearing, and in the market place he debatedevery day with anyone whom he met.	17 Disputava egli pertanto nella Sinagoga con i Giudei, e co' proseliti, e nel foro ogni giorno con chi vi si incontrava.
18 Even a few Epicurean and Stoic philosophers argued with him. Some said, 'What can this parrotmean?' And, because he was preaching about Jesus and Resurrection, others said, 'He seems to be apropagandist for some outlandish gods.'	18 E alcuni filosofi Epicurei, e Stoici lo attaccavano, e alcuni dicevano: Che vuoi egli dire questo chiacchierone? Altri poi: E' pare, che sia annunziatore di nuovi dei: perché annunziava loro Gesù, e la risurrezione.
19 They got him to accompany them to the Areopagus, where they said to him, 'Can we know what thisnew doctrine is that you are teaching?	19 E presolo lo condussero all'Areopago dicendo: Possiam noi sapere quel, che siasi questa nuova dottrina, di cui tu parli?
20 Some of the things you say seemed startling to us and we would like to find out what they mean.'	20 Imperocché tu ci suoni alle orecchi; certe nuove cose: vorremmo adunque sapere quel, che ciò abbia da essere.
21 The one amusement the Athenians and the foreigners living there seem to have is to discuss andlisten to the latest ideas.	21 (Or gli Ateniesi tutti, e i forestieri ospiti a niun altra cosa badavano, che a dire, o ascoltare qualche cosa di nuovo.)
22 So Paul stood before the whole council of the Areopagus and made this speech: 'Men of Athens, Ihave seen for myself how extremely scrupulous you are in all religious matters,	22 E Paolo stando in piedi in mezza dell'Areopago, disse: Uomini Ateniesi, io vi veggo in tutte le cose quasi più che religiosi,
23 because, as I strol ed round looking at your sacred monuments, I noticed among other things an altarinscribed: To An Unknown God. In fact, the unknown God you revere is the one I proclaim to you.	23 Imperocché passando io, e considerando i vostri simulacri, ho trovato anche un'ara, sopra la quale era scritto: Al Dio ignoto. Quello adunque, cui voi adorate senza conoscerlo, io annunzio a voi.
24 'Since the God who made the world and everything in it is himself Lord of heaven and earth, he doesnot make his home in shrines made by human hands.	24 Dio, il quale fece il mondo, e le cose tutte, che in esso sono, essendo egli il Signore del cielo, e della terra, non abita in templi manofatti,
25 Nor is he in need of anything, that he should be served by human hands; on the contrary, it is he whogives everything -- including life and breath -- to everyone.	25 Né è servito per le mani degli uomini, quasi di alcuna cosa abbisogni egli, che da a tutti la vita, il respiro, e tutte le cose.
26 From one single principle he not only created the whole human race so that they could occupy theentire earth, but he decreed the times and limits of their habitation.	26 E fece da un solo la progenie tutta degli uomini, che abitasse tutta quanta, la estensione della terra, fissati avendone i determinati tempi, e i confini della loro abitazione,
27 And he did this so that they might seek the deity and, by feeling their way towards him, succeed infinding him; and indeed he is not far from any of us,	27 Perché cercassero Dio, se a sorte tasteggiando lo rinvenissero, quantunque ei non sia lungi da ciascheduno di noi.
28 since it is in him that we live, and move, and exist, as indeed some of your own writers have said: Weare al his children.	28 Imperocché in lui viviamo, e ci muoviamo, e siamo: come anche taluni, de' vostri poeti han detto: imperocché di lui eziandio siamo progenie.
29 'Since we are the children of God, we have no excuse for thinking that the deity looks like anything ingold, silver or stone that has been carved and designed by a man.	29 Essendo adunque noi progenie di Dio, non dobbiamo stimare, che l'esser divino sia simile all'oro, o all'argento, o alla pietra scolpita dall'arte, e dall'invenzione dell'uomo.
30 'But now, overlooking the times of ignorance, God is tel ing everyone everywhere that they mustrepent,	30 Ma sopra i tempi di una tal ignoranza avendo Dio chiusi gli occhi, intima adesso agli uomini, che tutti in ogni luogo facciano penitenza.
31 because he has fixed a day when the whole world will be judged in uprightness by a man he hasappointed. And God has publicly proved this by raising him from the dead.'	31 Conciossiachè ha fissato un giorno, in cui giudicherà con giustizia il mondo per mezzo di un uomo stabilito da lui, come ne ha fatto fede a tutti con risuscitarlo da morte.
32 At this mention of rising from the dead, some of them burst out laughing; others said, 'We would liketo hear you talk about this another time.'	32 Sentita nominare la resurrezione de' morti, alcuni ne fecer beffe, altri poi dissero: Ti ascolteremo sopra di ciò un'altra volta.
33 After that Paul left them,	33 Così Paolo si parti da loro.
34 but there were some who attached themselves to him and became believers, among them Dionysiusthe Aeropagite and a woman cal ed Damaris, and others besides.	34 Alcuni però insinuatisi con lui credettero: tra' quali e Dionigi Areopagita, e una donna per nome Damaride, e altri con questi.
