1 Passing through Amphipolis and Apol onia, they eventual y reached Thessalonica, where there was aJewish synagogue.	1 Atravesaron Anfípolis y Apolonia, y llegaron a Tesalónica, donde los judíos tenían una sinagoga.
2 Paul as usual went in and for three consecutive Sabbaths developed the arguments from scripture forthem,	2 Pablo, como de costumbre, se dirigió a ellos y discutió durante tres sábados, basándose en la Escritura.
3 explaining and proving how it was ordained that the Christ should suffer and rise from the dead. 'Andthe Christ', he said, 'is this Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you.'	3 Explicaba los textos y demostraba que el Mesías debía sufrir y resucitar de entre los muertos. «Y el Mesías, afirmaba, es este Jesús que yo les anuncio».
4 Some of them were convinced and joined Paul and Silas, and so did a great many godfearing peopleand Greeks, as wel as a number of the leading women.	4 Algunos se convencieron y se unieron al grupo de Pablo y de Silas, lo mismo que un gran número de adoradores de Dios, de paganos y no pocas mujeres influyentes.
5 The Jews, ful of resentment, enlisted the help of a gang from the market place, stirred up a crowd, andsoon had the whole city in an uproar. They made for Jason's house, hoping to bring them before the People'sAssembly;	5 Llenos de envidia, los judíos reunieron un grupo de gente de la calle y promovieron un alboroto, sembrando la agitación en la ciudad. Entonces se presentaron delante de la casa de Jasón en busca de Pablo y de Silas, para conducirlos ante la asamblea del pueblo.
6 however, they found only Jason and some of the brothers, and these they dragged before the citycouncil, shouting, 'The people who have been turning the whole world upside down have come here now;	6 Como no los encontraron, arrastraron a Jasón y a algunos hermanos ante los magistrados de la ciudad, gritando: «Esos que han revolucionado todo el mundo, han venido también aquí
7 they have been staying at Jason's. They have broken Caesar's edicts by claiming that there is anotherking, Jesus.'	7 y Jasón los ha recibido en su casa. Toda esta gente contraviene los edictos del Emperador, pretendiendo que hay otro rey, llamado Jesús».
8 Hearing this, the citizens and the city council ors were alarmed,	8 Estos gritos impresionaron mucho a la multitud y a los magistrados,
9 and they made Jason and the rest give security before setting them free.	9 y solamente después de haber exigido una fianza de parte de Jasón y de los otros, los pusieron en libertad.
10 When it was dark the brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away to Beroea, where they went tothe Jewish synagogue as soon as they arrived.	10 Esa misma noche, los hermanos hicieron partir a Pablo y a Silas hacia Berea. En cuanto llegaron, se dirigieron a la sinagoga de los judíos.
11 Here the Jews were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they welcomed the wordvery readily; every day they studied the scriptures to check whether it was true.	11 Como estos eran mejores que los de Tesalónica, acogieron la Palabra con sumo interés, y examinaban todos los días las Escrituras para verificar la exactitud de lo que oían.
12 Many of them became believers, and so did many Greek women of high standing and a number ofthe men.	12 Muchos de ellos abrazaron la fe, lo mismo que algunos paganos, entre los cuales había mujeres de la aristocracia y un buen número de hombres.
13 When the Jews of Thessalonica came to learn that the word of God was being preached by Paul inBeroea as wel , they went there to make trouble and stir up the people.	13 Pero, cuando los judíos de Tesalónica se enteraron de que Pablo había anunciado la Palabra de Dios también en Berea, fueron allí a perturbar a la multitud sembrando la agitación.
14 So the brothers arranged for Paul to go immediately as far as the coast, leaving Silas and Timothybehind.	14 Entonces los hermanos hicieron partir inmediatamente a Pablo en dirección al mar; Silas y Timoteo, en cambio, permanecieron allí.
15 Paul's escort took him as far as Athens, and went back with instructions for Silas and Timothy torejoin Paul as soon as they could.	15 Los que acompañaban a Pablo lo condujeron hasta Atenas, y luego volvieron con la orden de que Silas y Timoteo se reunieran con él lo más pronto posible.
16 Paul waited for them in Athens and there his whole soul was revolted at the sight of a city given overto idolatry.	16 Mientras los esperaba en Atenas, Pablo sentía que la indignación se apoderaba de él, al contemplar la ciudad llena de ídolos.
17 In the synagogue he debated with the Jews and the godfearing, and in the market place he debatedevery day with anyone whom he met.	17 Discutía en la sinagoga con los judíos y con los que adoraban a Dios, y también lo hacía diariamente en la plaza pública con los que pasaban por allí.
18 Even a few Epicurean and Stoic philosophers argued with him. Some said, 'What can this parrotmean?' And, because he was preaching about Jesus and Resurrection, others said, 'He seems to be apropagandist for some outlandish gods.'	18 Incluso, algunos filósofos epicúreos y estoicos dialogaban con él. Algunos comentaban: «¿Qué estará diciendo este charlatán?», y otros: «Parece ser un predicador de divinidades extranjeras», porque Pablo anunciaba a Jesús y la resurrección.
19 They got him to accompany them to the Areopagus, where they said to him, 'Can we know what thisnew doctrine is that you are teaching?	19 Entonces lo llevaron con ellos al Areópago y le dijeron: «¿Podríamos saber en qué consiste la nueva doctrina que tú enseñas?
20 Some of the things you say seemed startling to us and we would like to find out what they mean.'	20 Las cosas que nos predicas nos parecen extrañas y quisiéramos saber qué significan».
21 The one amusement the Athenians and the foreigners living there seem to have is to discuss andlisten to the latest ideas.	21 Porque todos los atenienses y los extranjeros que residían allí, no tenían otro pasatiempo que el de transmitir o escuchar la última novedad.
22 So Paul stood before the whole council of the Areopagus and made this speech: 'Men of Athens, Ihave seen for myself how extremely scrupulous you are in all religious matters,	22 Pablo, de pie, en medio del Aréopago, dijo: Atenienses, veo que ustedes son, desde todo punto de vista, los más religiosos de todos los hombres.
23 because, as I strol ed round looking at your sacred monuments, I noticed among other things an altarinscribed: To An Unknown God. In fact, the unknown God you revere is the one I proclaim to you.	23 En efecto, mientras me paseaba mirando los monumentos sagrados que ustedes tienen, encontré entre otras cosas un altar con esta inscripción: «Al dios desconocido». Ahora, yo vengo a anunciarles eso que ustedes adoran sin conocer.
24 'Since the God who made the world and everything in it is himself Lord of heaven and earth, he doesnot make his home in shrines made by human hands.	24 El Dios que ha hecho el mundo y todo lo que hay en él no habita en templos hechos por manos de hombre, porque es el Señor del cielo y de la tierra.
25 Nor is he in need of anything, that he should be served by human hands; on the contrary, it is he whogives everything -- including life and breath -- to everyone.	25 Tampoco puede ser servido por manos humanas como si tuviera necesidad de algo, ya que él da a todos la vida, el aliento y todas las cosas.
26 From one single principle he not only created the whole human race so that they could occupy theentire earth, but he decreed the times and limits of their habitation.	26 El hizo salir de un solo principio a todo el género humano para que habite sobre toda la tierra, y señaló de antemano a cada pueblo sus épocas y sus fronteras,
27 And he did this so that they might seek the deity and, by feeling their way towards him, succeed infinding him; and indeed he is not far from any of us,	27 para que ellos busquen a Dios, aunque sea a tientas, y puedan encontrarlo. Porque en realidad, él no está lejos de cada uno de nosotros.
28 since it is in him that we live, and move, and exist, as indeed some of your own writers have said: Weare al his children.	28 En efecto, en él vivimos, nos movemos y existimos, como muy bien lo dijeron algunos poetas de ustedes: «Nosotros somos también de su raza».
29 'Since we are the children of God, we have no excuse for thinking that the deity looks like anything ingold, silver or stone that has been carved and designed by a man.	29 Y si nosotros somos de la raza de Dios, no debemos creer que la divinidad es semejante al oro, la plata o la piedra, trabajados por el arte y el genio del hombre.
30 'But now, overlooking the times of ignorance, God is tel ing everyone everywhere that they mustrepent,	30 Pero ha llegado el momento en que Dios, pasando por alto el tiempo de la ignorancia, manda a todos los hombres, en todas partes, que se arrepientan.
31 because he has fixed a day when the whole world will be judged in uprightness by a man he hasappointed. And God has publicly proved this by raising him from the dead.'	31 Porque él ha establecido un día para juzgar al universo con justicia, por medio de un Hombre que él ha destinado y acreditado delante de todos, haciéndolo resucitar de entre los muertos».
32 At this mention of rising from the dead, some of them burst out laughing; others said, 'We would liketo hear you talk about this another time.'	32 Al oír las palabras «resurrección de los muertos», unos se burlaban y otros decían: «Otro día te oiremos hablar sobre esto».
33 After that Paul left them,	33 Así fue cómo Pablo se alejó de ellos.
34 but there were some who attached themselves to him and became believers, among them Dionysiusthe Aeropagite and a woman cal ed Damaris, and others besides.	34 Sin embargo, algunos lo siguieron y abrazaron la fe. Entre ellos, estaban Dionisio el Areopagita, una mujer llamada Dámaris y algunos otros.
