1 Passing through Amphipolis and Apol onia, they eventual y reached Thessalonica, where there was aJewish synagogue.	1 Auf dem Weg über Amphipolis und Apollonia kamen sie nach Thessalonich. Dort hatten die Juden eine Synagoge.
2 Paul as usual went in and for three consecutive Sabbaths developed the arguments from scripture forthem,	2 Nach seiner Gewohnheit ging Paulus zu ihnen und redete an drei Sabbaten zu ihnen, wobei er von den Schriften ausging.
3 explaining and proving how it was ordained that the Christ should suffer and rise from the dead. 'Andthe Christ', he said, 'is this Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you.'	3 Er legte sie ihnen aus und erklärte, dass der Messias leiden und von den Toten auferstehen musste. Und er sagte: Jesus, den ich euch verkünde, ist dieser Messias.
4 Some of them were convinced and joined Paul and Silas, and so did a great many godfearing peopleand Greeks, as wel as a number of the leading women.	4 Einige von ihnen ließen sich überzeugen und schlossen sich Paulus und Silas an, außerdem eine große Schar gottesfürchtiger Griechen, darunter nicht wenige Frauen aus vornehmen Kreisen.
5 The Jews, ful of resentment, enlisted the help of a gang from the market place, stirred up a crowd, andsoon had the whole city in an uproar. They made for Jason's house, hoping to bring them before the People'sAssembly;	5 Die Juden wurden eifersüchtig, holten sich einige nichtsnutzige Männer, die sich auf dem Markt herumtrieben, wiegelten mit ihrer Hilfe das Volk auf und brachten die Stadt in Aufruhr. 6 however, they found only Jason and some of the brothers, and these they dragged before the citycouncil, shouting, 'The people who have been turning the whole world upside down have come here now;	6 Sie fanden sie aber nicht. Daher schleppten sie den Jason und einige Brüder vor die Stadtpräfekten und schrien: Diese Leute, die die ganze Welt in Aufruhr gebracht haben, sind jetzt auch hier,
7 they have been staying at Jason's. They have broken Caesar's edicts by claiming that there is anotherking, Jesus.'	7 und Jason hat sie aufgenommen. Sie alle verstoßen gegen die Gesetze des Kaisers; denn sie behaupten, ein anderer sei König, nämlich Jesus.
8 Hearing this, the citizens and the city council ors were alarmed,	8 So brachten sie die Menge und die Stadtpräfekten, die das hörten, in Erregung.
9 and they made Jason and the rest give security before setting them free.	9 Diese nahmen von Jason und den anderen eine Bürgschaft und ließen sie frei.
10 When it was dark the brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away to Beroea, where they went tothe Jewish synagogue as soon as they arrived.	10 Die Brüder schickten noch in der Nacht Paulus und Silas weiter nach Beröa. Nach ihrer Ankunft gingen sie in die Synagoge der Juden.
11 Here the Jews were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they welcomed the wordvery readily; every day they studied the scriptures to check whether it was true.	11 Diese waren freundlicher als die in Thessalonich; mit großer Bereitschaft nahmen sie das Wort auf und forschten Tag für Tag in den Schriften nach, ob sich dies wirklich so verhielte.
12 Many of them became believers, and so did many Greek women of high standing and a number ofthe men.	12 Viele von ihnen wurden gläubig, und ebenso nicht wenige der vornehmen griechischen Frauen und Männer.
13 When the Jews of Thessalonica came to learn that the word of God was being preached by Paul inBeroea as wel , they went there to make trouble and stir up the people.	13 Als aber die Juden von Thessalonich erfuhren, dass Paulus auch in Beröa das Wort Gottes verkündete, kamen sie dorthin, um das Volk aufzuwiegeln und aufzuhetzen.
14 So the brothers arranged for Paul to go immediately as far as the coast, leaving Silas and Timothybehind.	14 Da schickten die Brüder Paulus sogleich weg zum Meer hinunter. Silas und Timotheus aber blieben zurück.
15 Paul's escort took him as far as Athens, and went back with instructions for Silas and Timothy torejoin Paul as soon as they could.	15 Die Begleiter des Paulus brachten ihn nach Athen. Mit dem Auftrag an Silas und Timotheus, Paulus möglichst rasch nachzukommen, kehrten sie zurück.
16 Paul waited for them in Athens and there his whole soul was revolted at the sight of a city given overto idolatry.	16 Während Paulus in Athen auf sie wartete, erfasste ihn heftiger Zorn; denn er sah die Stadt voll von Götzenbildern.
17 In the synagogue he debated with the Jews and the godfearing, and in the market place he debatedevery day with anyone whom he met.	17 Er redete in der Synagoge mit den Juden und Gottesfürchtigen und auf dem Markt sprach er täglich mit denen, die er gerade antraf.
18 Even a few Epicurean and Stoic philosophers argued with him. Some said, 'What can this parrotmean?' And, because he was preaching about Jesus and Resurrection, others said, 'He seems to be apropagandist for some outlandish gods.'	18 Einige von den epikureischen und stoischen Philosophen diskutierten mit ihm und manche sagten: Was will denn dieser Schwätzer? Andere aber: Es scheint ein Verkünder fremder Gottheiten zu sein. Er verkündete nämlich das Evangelium von Jesus und von der Auferstehung.
19 They got him to accompany them to the Areopagus, where they said to him, 'Can we know what thisnew doctrine is that you are teaching?	19 Sie nahmen ihn mit, führten ihn zum Areopag und fragten: Können wir erfahren, was das für eine neue Lehre ist, die du vorträgst?
20 Some of the things you say seemed startling to us and we would like to find out what they mean.'	20 Du bringst uns recht befremdliche Dinge zu Gehör. Wir wüssten gern, worum es sich handelt.
21 The one amusement the Athenians and the foreigners living there seem to have is to discuss andlisten to the latest ideas.	21 Alle Athener und die Fremden dort taten nichts lieber, als die letzten Neuigkeiten zu erzählen oder zu hören.
22 So Paul stood before the whole council of the Areopagus and made this speech: 'Men of Athens, Ihave seen for myself how extremely scrupulous you are in all religious matters,	22 Da stellte sich Paulus in die Mitte des Areopags und sagte: Athener, nach allem, was ich sehe, seid ihr besonders fromme Menschen.
23 because, as I strol ed round looking at your sacred monuments, I noticed among other things an altarinscribed: To An Unknown God. In fact, the unknown God you revere is the one I proclaim to you.	23 Denn als ich umherging und mir eure Heiligtümer ansah, fand ich auch einen Altar mit der Aufschrift: EINEM UNBEKANNTEN GOTT. Was ihr verehrt, ohne es zu kennen, das verkünde ich euch.
24 'Since the God who made the world and everything in it is himself Lord of heaven and earth, he doesnot make his home in shrines made by human hands.	24 Gott, der die Welt erschaffen hat und alles in ihr, er, der Herr über Himmel und Erde, wohnt nicht in Tempeln, die von Menschenhand gemacht sind.
25 Nor is he in need of anything, that he should be served by human hands; on the contrary, it is he whogives everything -- including life and breath -- to everyone.	25 Er lässt sich auch nicht von Menschen bedienen, als brauche er etwas: er, der allen das Leben, den Atem und alles gibt.
26 From one single principle he not only created the whole human race so that they could occupy theentire earth, but he decreed the times and limits of their habitation.	26 Er hat aus einem einzigen Menschen das ganze Menschengeschlecht erschaffen, damit es die ganze Erde bewohne. Er hat für sie bestimmte Zeiten und die Grenzen ihrer Wohnsitze festgesetzt.
27 And he did this so that they might seek the deity and, by feeling their way towards him, succeed infinding him; and indeed he is not far from any of us,	27 Sie sollten Gott suchen, ob sie ihn ertasten und finden könnten; denn keinem von uns ist er fern.
28 since it is in him that we live, and move, and exist, as indeed some of your own writers have said: Weare al his children.	28 Denn in ihm leben wir, bewegen wir uns und sind wir, wie auch einige von euren Dichtern gesagt haben: Wir sind von seiner Art.
29 'Since we are the children of God, we have no excuse for thinking that the deity looks like anything ingold, silver or stone that has been carved and designed by a man.	29 Da wir also von Gottes Art sind, dürfen wir nicht meinen, das Göttliche sei wie ein goldenes oder silbernes oder steinernes Gebilde menschlicher Kunst und Erfindung.
30 'But now, overlooking the times of ignorance, God is tel ing everyone everywhere that they mustrepent,	30 Gott, der über die Zeiten der Unwissenheit hinweggesehen hat, lässt jetzt den Menschen verkünden, dass überall alle umkehren sollen.
31 because he has fixed a day when the whole world will be judged in uprightness by a man he hasappointed. And God has publicly proved this by raising him from the dead.'	31 Denn er hat einen Tag festgesetzt, an dem er den Erdkreis in Gerechtigkeit richten wird, durch einen Mann, den er dazu bestimmt und vor allen Menschen dadurch ausgewiesen hat, dass er ihn von den Toten auferweckte.
32 At this mention of rising from the dead, some of them burst out laughing; others said, 'We would liketo hear you talk about this another time.'	32 Als sie von der Auferstehung der Toten hörten, spotteten die einen, andere aber sagten: Darüber wollen wir dich ein andermal hören.
33 After that Paul left them,	33 So ging Paulus aus ihrer Mitte weg.
34 but there were some who attached themselves to him and became believers, among them Dionysiusthe Aeropagite and a woman cal ed Damaris, and others besides.	34 Einige Männer aber schlossen sich ihm an und wurden gläubig, unter ihnen auch Dionysius, der Areopagit, außerdem eine Frau namens Damaris und noch andere mit ihnen.
