Deuteronomy 7

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 'When Yahweh your God has brought you into the country which you are going to make your own,many nations wil fal before you: Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites,seven nations greater and stronger than yourselves.	1 Lorsque Yahvé ton Dieu t'aura fait entrer dans le pays dont tu vas prendre possession, desnations nombreuses tomberont devant toi: les Hittites, les Girgashites, les Amorites, les Cananéens, lesPerizzites, les Hivvites, et les Jébuséens, sept nations plus nombreuses et plus puissantes que toi.
2 Yahweh your God will put them at your mercy and you will conquer them. You must put them under thecurse of destruction. You must not make any treaty with them or show them any pity.	2 Yahvé ton Dieu te les livrera et tu les battras. Tu les dévoueras par anathème. Tu ne concluraspas d'alliance avec elles, tu ne leur feras pas grâce.
3 You must not intermarry with them; you must not give a daughter of yours to a son of theirs, or take adaughter of theirs for a son of yours,	3 Tu ne contracteras pas de mariage avec elles, tu ne donneras pas ta fille à leur fils, ni neprendras leur fille pour ton fils.
4 for your son would be seduced from fol owing me into serving other gods; the wrath of Yahweh wouldblaze out against you and he would instantly destroy you.	4 Car ton fils serait détourné de me suivre; il servirait d'autres dieux; et la colère de Yahvés'enflammerait contre vous et il t'exterminerait promptement.
5 Instead, treat them like this: tear down their altars, smash their standing-stones, cut down their sacredpoles and burn their idols.	5 Mais voici comment vous devrez agir à leur égard: vous démolirez leurs autels, vous briserezleurs stèles, vous couperez leurs pieux sacrés et vous brûlerez leurs idoles.
6 For you are a people consecrated to Yahweh your God; of al the peoples on earth, you have beenchosen by Yahweh your God to be his own people.	6 Car tu es un peuple consacré à Yahvé ton Dieu; c'est toi que Yahvé ton Dieu a choisi pour sonpeuple à lui, parmi toutes les nations qui sont sur la terre.
7 'Yahweh set his heart on you and chose you not because you were the most numerous of al peoples --for indeed you were the smal est of al -	7 Si Yahvé s'est attaché à vous et vous a choisis, ce n'est pas que vous soyez le plus nombreuxde tous les peuples: car vous êtes le moins nombreux d'entre tous les peuples.
8 but because he loved you and meant to keep the oath which he swore to your ancestors: that was whyYahweh brought you out with his mighty hand and redeemed you from the place of slave-labour, from the powerof Pharaoh king of Egypt.	8 Mais c'est par amour pour vous et pour garder le serment juré à vos pères, que Yahvé vous afait sortir à main forte et t'a délivré de la maison de servitude, du pouvoir de Pharaon, roi d'Egypte.
9 From this you can see that Yahweh your God is the true God, the faithful God who, though he is true tohis covenant and his faithful love for a thousand generations as regards those who love him and keep hiscommandments,	9 Tu sauras donc que Yahvé ton Dieu est le vrai Dieu, le Dieu fidèle qui garde son alliance etson amour pour mille générations à ceux qui l'aiment et gardent ses commandements,
10 punishes in their own persons those that hate him. He destroys anyone who hates him, without delay;and it is in their own persons that he punishes them.	10 mais qui punit en leur propre personne ceux qui le haïssent. Il fait périr sans délai celui qui lehait, et c'est en sa propre personne qu'il le punit.
11 Hence, you must keep and observe the commandments, laws and customs which I am laying downfor you today.	11 Tu garderas donc les commandements, lois et coutumes que je te prescris aujourd'hui demettre en pratique.
12 'Listen to these ordinances, be true to them and observe them, and in return Yahweh your God wil betrue to the covenant and love which he promised on oath to your ancestors.	12 Pour avoir écouté ces coutumes, les avoir gardées et mises en pratique, Yahvé ton Dieu tegardera l'alliance et l'amour qu'il a jurés à tes pères.
13 He wil love you and bless you and increase your numbers; he wil bless the fruit of your body and theproduce of your soil, your corn, your new wine, your oil, the issue of your cattle, the young of your flock, in thecountry which he swore to your ancestors that he would give you.	13 Il t'aimera, te bénira, te multipliera; il bénira le fruit de ton sein et le fruit de ton sol, ton blé,ton vin nouveau, ton huile, la portée de tes vaches et le croît de tes brebis, sur la terre qu'il a juré à tes pères de tedonner.
14 You wil be the most blessed of al peoples. None of you, man or woman, will be sterile, no male orfemale of your beasts infertile.	14 Tu recevras plus de bénédictions que tous les peuples. Nul chez toi, homme ou femme, nesera stérile, nul mâle ou femelle de ton bétail.
15 Yahweh wil deflect al il ness from you; he wil not afflict you with those evil plagues of Egypt whichyou have known, but will inflict them on al who hate you.	15 Yahvé détournera de toi toute maladie; il ne t'infligera pas ces méchants maux d'Egypte quetu as connus, mais il les enverra à tous ceux qui te haïssent.
16 'So, devour all the peoples whom Yahweh your God puts at your mercy, show them no pity, do notserve their gods: or you wil be ensnared.	16 Tu dévoreras donc tous ces peuples que Yahvé ton Dieu te livre, ton oeil sera sans pitié et tune serviras pas leurs dieux: car tu y serais pris au piège.
17 'You may say in your heart, "These nations outnumber me; how shal I be able to dispossess them?"	17 Peut-être vas-tu dire en ton coeur: "Ces nations sont plus nombreuses que moi, commentpourrais-je les déposséder?"
18 Do not be afraid of them: remember how Yahweh your God treated Pharaoh and all Egypt,	18 Ne les crains pas: rappelle-toi donc ce que Yahvé ton Dieu a fait à Pharaon et à toutel'Egypte,
19 the great ordeals that you yourselves have seen, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand andoutstretched arm with which Yahweh your God brought you out. This is how Yahweh your God will treat al thepeoples whom you fear to face.	19 les grandes épreuves que tes yeux ont vues, les signes et les prodiges, la main forte et le brasétendu par lesquels Yahvé ton Dieu t'a fait sortir. Ainsi fera Yahvé ton Dieu contre tous les peuples devant qui tuas peur.
20 And what is more, Yahweh your God wil send hornets to destroy those who are left and who hidefrom you.	20 De plus, Yahvé ton Dieu enverra des frelons pour anéantir ceux qui seraient restés et seseraient cachés devant toi.
21 'Do not be afraid of them, for Yahweh your God is among you, a great and terrible God.	21 Ne tremble donc pas devant eux, car au milieu de toi est Yahvé ton Dieu, Dieu grand etredoutable.
22 Little by little, Yahweh your God will clear away these nations before you; you cannot destroy them allat once, or wild animals wil breed and be disastrous for you.	22 C'est peu à peu que Yahvé ton Dieu détruira ces nations devant toi; tu ne pourras lesexterminer sur-le-champ, de peur que les bêtes sauvages ne se multiplient à ton détriment,
23 But Yahweh your God wil put them at your mercy, and disaster after disaster wil overtake them untilthey are finally destroyed.	23 mais Yahvé ton Dieu te les livrera, et elles resteront en proie à de grands troubles jusqu'à cequ'elles soient détruites.
24 He wil put their kings at your mercy and you wil blot out their names under heaven; no one wil beable to resist you -- until you have destroyed them al .	24 Il livrera leurs rois en ton pouvoir et tu effaceras leur nom de dessous les cieux: nul netiendra devant toi, jusqu'à ce que tu les aies exterminés.
25 'You must burn the statues of their gods, not coveting the gold and silver that covers them; take it andyou wil be caught in a snare: it is detestable to Yahweh your God.	25 Vous brûlerez les images sculptées de leurs dieux, et tu n'iras pas convoiter l'or et l'argent quiles recouvrent. Si tu t'en emparais, tu serais pris au piège; car c'est là chose abominable à Yahvé ton Dieu.
26 You must not bring any detestable thing into your house: or you, like it, wil come under the curse ofdestruction. You must regard them as unclean and loathsome, for they are under the curse of destruction.'	26 Tu n'introduiras pas dans ta maison une chose abominable, de peur de devenir anathèmecomme elle. Tu les tiendras pour immondes et abominables, car elles sont anathèmes.
