Deuteronomy 5

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Moses cal ed al Israel together and said to them, 'Listen, Israel, to the laws and customs that I proclaimto you today. Learn them and take care to observe them.	1 Moïse convoqua tout Israël et leur dit: Ecoute, Israël, les lois et les coutumes que je prononceaujourd'hui à vos oreilles. Apprenez-les et gardez-les pour les mettre en pratique.
2 'Yahweh our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.	2 Yahvé notre Dieu a conclu avec nous une alliance à l'Horeb.
3 Yahweh made this covenant not with our ancestors, but with us, with all of us alive here today.	3 Ce n'est pas avec nos pères que Yahvé a conclu cette alliance mais avec nous, nous-mêmesqui sommes ici aujourd'hui tous vivants.
4 On the mountain, from the heart of the fire, Yahweh spoke to you face to face,	4 Sur la montagne, au milieu du feu, Yahvé vous a parlé face à face,
5 while I stood between you and Yahweh to let you know what Yahweh was saying, since you were afraidof the fire and had not gone up the mountain. He said:	5 et moi je me tenais alors entre Yahvé et vous pour vous faire connaître la parole de Yahvé;car, craignant le feu, vous n'étiez pas montés sur la montagne. Il dit:
6 ' "I am Yahweh your God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the place of slave-labour.	6 "Je suis Yahvé ton Dieu, qui t'ai fait sortir du pays d'Egypte, de la maison de servitude.
7 ' "You will have no gods other than me.	7 "Tu n'auras pas d'autres dieux devant moi.
8 ' "You must not make yourselves any image or any likeness of anything in heaven above or on earthbeneath or in the waters under the earth;	8 "Tu ne te feras aucune image sculptée de rien qui ressemble à ce qui est dans les cieux là-haut,ou sur la terre ici-bas, ou dans les eaux au-dessous de la terre.
9 you must not bow down to these gods or serve them. For I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God and Ipunish the parents' fault in the children, the grandchildren and the great-grandchildren, among those who hateme;	9 Tu ne te prosterneras pas devant ces dieux ni ne les serviras. Car moi, Yahvé, ton Dieu, je suisun Dieu jaloux, qui punis la faute des pères sur les enfants, les petits-enfants et les arrière-petits-enfants, pourceux qui me haïssent,
10 but I show faithful love to thousands, to those who love me and keep my commandments.	10 mais qui fais grâce à des milliers, pour ceux qui m'aiment et gardent mes commandements.
11 ' "You must not misuse the name of Yahweh your God, for Yahweh wil not leave unpunished anyonewho uses his name for what is false.	11 "Tu ne prononceras pas le nom de Yahvé ton Dieu à faux, car Yahvé ne laisse pas impunicelui qui prononce son nom à faux.
12 ' "Observe the Sabbath day and keep it holy, as Yahweh your God has commanded you.	12 "Observe le jour du sabbat pour le sanctifier, comme te l'a commandé Yahvé, ton Dieu.
13 Labour for six days, doing all your work,	13 Pendant six jours tu travailleras et tu feras tout ton ouvrage,
14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath for Yahweh your God. You must not do any work that day, neitheryou, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your servants -- male or female -- nor your ox, nor your donkey, norany of your animals, nor the foreigner who has made his home with you;	14 mais le septième jour est un sabbat pour Yahvé ton Dieu. Tu n'y feras aucun ouvrage, toi, niton fils, ni ta fille, ni ton serviteur, ni ta servante, ni ton boeuf, ni ton âne ni aucune de tes bêtes, ni l'étranger quiest dans tes portes. Ainsi, comme toi-même, ton serviteur et ta servante pourront se reposer.
15 so that your servants, male and female, may rest, as you do. Remember that you were once a slave inEgypt, and that Yahweh your God brought you out of there with mighty hand and outstretched arm; this is whyYahweh your God has commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.	15 Tu te souviendras que tu as été en servitude au pays d'Egypte et que Yahvé ton Dieu t'en afait sortir d'une main forte et d'un bras étendu; c'est pourquoi Yahvé ton Dieu t'a commandé de garder le jour dusabbat.
16 ' "Honour your father and your mother, as Yahweh your God has commanded you, so that you mayhave long life and may prosper in the country which Yahweh your God is giving you.	16 "Honore ton père et ta mère, comme te l'a commandé Yahvé ton Dieu, afin que se prolongenttes jours et que tu sois heureux sur la terre que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne.
17 ' "You must not kil .	17 "Tu ne tueras pas.
18 ' "You must not commit adultery.	18 "Tu ne commettras pas l'adultère.
19 ' "You must not steal.	19 "Tu ne voleras pas.
20 ' "You must not give false evidence against your fel ow.	20 "Tu ne porteras pas de faux témoignage contre ton prochain.
21 ' "You must not set your heart on your neighbour's spouse, you must not set your heart on yourneighbour's house, or field, or servant-man or woman -- or ox, or donkey or any of your neighbour'spossessions."	21 "Tu ne convoiteras pas la femme de ton prochain, tu ne désireras ni sa maison, ni son champ,ni son serviteur ou sa servante, ni son boeuf ou son âne: rien de ce qui est à ton prochain."
22 'These were the words Yahweh spoke to you when you were al assembled on the mountain.Thunderously, he spoke to you from the heart of the fire, in cloud and thick darkness. He added nothing, butwrote them on two tablets of stone which he gave to me.	22 Telles sont les paroles que vous adressa Yahvé quand vous étiez tous assemblés sur lamontagne. Il vous parla du milieu du feu, dans la nuée et les ténèbres, d'une voix forte. Il n'y ajouta rien et lesécrivit sur deux tables de pierre qu'il me donna.
23 'Now, having heard this voice coming out of the darkness, while the mountain was al on fire, youcame to me, al of you, heads of tribes and elders,	23 Or, lorsque vous eûtes entendu cette voix sortir des ténèbres, tandis que la montagne était enfeu, vous tous, chefs de tribus et anciens, vous vîntes à moi
24 and said, "Yahweh our God has shown us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voicefrom the heart of the fire. Today we have seen that God can speak with a human being and that person stil live.	24 et vous me dîtes: "Voici que Yahvé notre Dieu nous a montré sa gloire et sa grandeur, et quenous avons entendu sa voix du milieu du feu. Nous avons vu aujourd'hui que Dieu peut parler à l'homme, etl'homme rester en vie.
25 So why should we expose ourselves to death again? For this great fire might devour us if we go onlistening to the voice of Yahweh our God, and then we should die.	25 Et maintenant, pourquoi devrions-nous mourir? Car ce grand feu pourrait nous dévorer sinous continuons à écouter la voix de Yahvé notre Dieu, et nous pourrions mourir.
26 For what creature of flesh could possibly live after hearing, as we have heard, the voice of the livingGod speaking from the heart of the fire?	26 Est-il en effet un être de chair qui puisse rester en vie, après avoir entendu comme nous lavoix du Dieu vivant parlant du milieu du feu?
27 Go nearer yourself and listen to everything that Yahweh our God may say, and then tel us everything that Yahweh our God has told you; we shal listen and put it into practice!"	27 Toi, approche pour entendre tout ce que dira Yahvé notre Dieu, puis tu nous répéteras ce queYahvé notre Dieu t'aura dit; nous l'écouterons et le mettrons en pratique."
28 'Yahweh heard what you were saying to me, and he then said to me, "I have heard what these peopleare saying. Everything they have said is well said.	28 Yahvé entendit ce que vous disiez et il me dit: "J'ai entendu les paroles de ce peuple. Tout cequ'ils t'ont dit est bien.
29 If only their heart were always so, set on fearing me and on keeping my commandments, so that theyand their children might prosper for ever!	29 Ah! si leur coeur pouvait toujours être ainsi, pour me craindre et garder mescommandements en sorte qu'ils soient heureux à jamais, eux et leurs fils.
30 Go and tell them to go back to their tents.	30 Va leur dire: Retournez à vos tentes.
31 But you yourself stay here with me, and I shal tel you all the commandments, the laws and thecustoms which you are to teach them and which they are to observe in the country which I am giving them astheir possession."	31 Mais toi, tu te tiendras ici auprès de moi, je te dirai tous les commandements, les lois et lescoutumes que tu leur enseigneras et qu'ils mettront en pratique dans le pays que je leur donne en possession."
32 'Keep them and put them into practice: such is Yahweh's command to you. Stray neither to right nor toleft.	32 Gardez et mettez en pratique! Ainsi vous l'a ordonné Yahvé votre Dieu. Ne vous écartez ni àdroite ni à gauche.
33 Fol ow the whole way that Yahweh has marked for you, and you wil survive to prosper and live long inthe country which you are going to possess.'	33 Vous suivrez tout le chemin que Yahvé votre Dieu vous a tracé, alors vous vivrez, vousaurez bonheur et longue vie dans le pays dont vous allez prendre possession.
