Deuteronomy 5

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Moses cal ed al Israel together and said to them, 'Listen, Israel, to the laws and customs that I proclaimto you today. Learn them and take care to observe them.	1 Moisés convocó a todo Israel y les dijo: Escucha, Israel, los preceptos y las leyes que yo promulgo hoy en presencia de todos ustedes. Apréndanlos para ponerlos en práctica cuidadosamente.
2 'Yahweh our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.	2 El Señor, nuestro Dios, hizo una alianza con nosotros en el Horeb.
3 Yahweh made this covenant not with our ancestors, but with us, with all of us alive here today.	3 No la hizo con nuestros padres, sino con nosotros, los que hoy estamos aquí, todos con vida.
4 On the mountain, from the heart of the fire, Yahweh spoke to you face to face,	4 En la montaña les habló cara a cara, desde el fuego.
5 while I stood between you and Yahweh to let you know what Yahweh was saying, since you were afraidof the fire and had not gone up the mountain. He said:	5 Mientras yo hacía de intermediario entre el Señor y ustedes para anunciarles su palabra, porque ustedes, atemorizados por el fuego, no habían subido a la montaña. El Señor dijo:
6 ' "I am Yahweh your God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the place of slave-labour.	6 Yo soy el Señor, tu Dios, que te hice salir de Egipto, de un lugar de esclavitud.
7 ' "You will have no gods other than me.	7 No tendrás otros dioses delante de mí.
8 ' "You must not make yourselves any image or any likeness of anything in heaven above or on earthbeneath or in the waters under the earth;	8 No te harás ninguna escultura y ninguna imagen de lo que hay arriba, en el cielo, o abajo, en la tierra, o debajo de la tierra, en las aguas.
9 you must not bow down to these gods or serve them. For I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God and Ipunish the parents' fault in the children, the grandchildren and the great-grandchildren, among those who hateme;	9 No te postrarás ante ellas ni les rendirás culto, porque yo soy el Señor, tu Dios, un Dios celoso, que castigo la maldad de los padres en los hijos, hasta la tercera y cuarta generación, si ellos me aborrecen:
10 but I show faithful love to thousands, to those who love me and keep my commandments.	10 Y tengo misericordia a lo largo de mil generaciones, si me aman y cumplen mis mandamientos.
11 ' "You must not misuse the name of Yahweh your God, for Yahweh wil not leave unpunished anyonewho uses his name for what is false.	11 No pronunciarás en vano el nombre del Señor, tu Dios, porque él no dejará sin castigo al que lo pronuncie en vano.
12 ' "Observe the Sabbath day and keep it holy, as Yahweh your God has commanded you.	12 Observa el día sábado para santificarlo, como el Señor, tu Dios, te lo ha ordenado.
13 Labour for six days, doing all your work,	13 Durante seis días trabajarás y realizarás todas tus tareas.
14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath for Yahweh your God. You must not do any work that day, neitheryou, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your servants -- male or female -- nor your ox, nor your donkey, norany of your animals, nor the foreigner who has made his home with you;	14 Pero el séptimo día es día de descanso en honor del Señor, tu Dios. En él no harán ningún trabajo ni tú, ni tu hijo, ni tu hija, ni tu esclavo, ni tu esclava, ni tu buey, ni tu asno, ni ningún otro de tus animales, ni tampoco el extranjero que reside en tus ciudades. Así podrán descansar tu esclavo y tu esclava, como lo haces tú.
15 so that your servants, male and female, may rest, as you do. Remember that you were once a slave inEgypt, and that Yahweh your God brought you out of there with mighty hand and outstretched arm; this is whyYahweh your God has commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.	15 Recuerda que fuiste esclavo en Egipto, y que el Señor te hizo salir de allí con el poder de su mano y la fuerza de su brazo. Por eso el Señor, tu Dios, te manda celebrar el día sábado.
16 ' "Honour your father and your mother, as Yahweh your God has commanded you, so that you mayhave long life and may prosper in the country which Yahweh your God is giving you.	16 Honra a tu padre y a tu madre, como el Señor, tu Dios, te lo ha mandado, para que tengas una larga vida y seas feliz en la tierra que el Señor, tu Dios, te da.
17 ' "You must not kil .	17 No matarás.
18 ' "You must not commit adultery.	18 No cometerás adulterio.
19 ' "You must not steal.	19 No robarás.
20 ' "You must not give false evidence against your fel ow.	20 No darás falso testimonio contra tu prójimo.
21 ' "You must not set your heart on your neighbour's spouse, you must not set your heart on yourneighbour's house, or field, or servant-man or woman -- or ox, or donkey or any of your neighbour'spossessions."	21 No codiciarás la mujer de tu prójimo, ni desearás su casa, su campo, su esclavo, su esclava, su buey, su asno ni ninguna otra cosa que le pertenezca.
22 'These were the words Yahweh spoke to you when you were al assembled on the mountain.Thunderously, he spoke to you from the heart of the fire, in cloud and thick darkness. He added nothing, butwrote them on two tablets of stone which he gave to me.	22 Estas son las palabras que el Señor les dirigió en la montaña, cuando todos ustedes estaban reunidos. El les habló con voz potente, desde el fuego, la nube y una densa oscuridad. No añadió nada más, sino que escribió esas palabras en las dos tablas de piedra que me entregó.
23 'Now, having heard this voice coming out of the darkness, while the mountain was al on fire, youcame to me, al of you, heads of tribes and elders,	23 Cuando oyeron la voz que salía de las tinieblas, mientras la montaña ardía envuelta en llamas, todos ustedes, jefes de tribu y ancianos, se acercaron a mí.
24 and said, "Yahweh our God has shown us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voicefrom the heart of the fire. Today we have seen that God can speak with a human being and that person stil live.	24 Y me dijeron? «El Señor, nuestro Dios, nos ha mostrado su gloria y su grandeza, y hemos oído su voz, que salía desde el fuego. Hoy hemos visto que Dios puede hablar con los hombres sin que por eso mueran.
25 So why should we expose ourselves to death again? For this great fire might devour us if we go onlistening to the voice of Yahweh our God, and then we should die.	25 Pero ahora. ¿por qué tendremos que morir, consumidos por este gran fuego? Si seguimos escuchando la voz del Señor, nuestro Dios, seguramente moriremos.
26 For what creature of flesh could possibly live after hearing, as we have heard, the voice of the livingGod speaking from the heart of the fire?	26 ¿Hay acaso algún hombre que pudo sobrevivir después de haber oído la voz del Dios viviente que le hablaba desde el fuego, como la hemos oído nosotros?
27 Go nearer yourself and listen to everything that Yahweh our God may say, and then tel us everything that Yahweh our God has told you; we shal listen and put it into practice!"	27 Por eso, acércate y escucha lo que dice el Señor, nuestro Dios, y luego repítenos todo lo que el te diga. Nosotros lo escucharemos y lo pondremos en práctica».
28 'Yahweh heard what you were saying to me, and he then said to me, "I have heard what these peopleare saying. Everything they have said is well said.	28 Cuando el Señor oyó las palabras que ustedes me dirigieron, me advirtió: «He oído las palabras que te dijo este pueblo. todo lo que han dicho está muy bien.
29 If only their heart were always so, set on fearing me and on keeping my commandments, so that theyand their children might prosper for ever!	29 Ojalá que siempre estén dispuestos como ahora a temerme y a cumplir mis mandamientos!, Así ellos y sus hijos serán siempre felices.
30 Go and tell them to go back to their tents.	30 Ahora ve a decirles que regresen a sus carpas.
31 But you yourself stay here with me, and I shal tel you all the commandments, the laws and thecustoms which you are to teach them and which they are to observe in the country which I am giving them astheir possession."	31 Tú, en cambio, quédate aquí junto a mí, y yo te indicaré los mandamientos, los preceptos y las leyes que deberás enseñarles, a fin de que los pongan en práctica en la tierra que les daré en posesión».
32 'Keep them and put them into practice: such is Yahweh's command to you. Stray neither to right nor toleft.	32 Pongan cuidado en practicar lo que el Señor, su Dios, les ha ordenado, sin desviarse ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda.
33 Fol ow the whole way that Yahweh has marked for you, and you wil survive to prosper and live long inthe country which you are going to possess.'	33 Vayan por el camino que el Señor, su Dios, les ha trazado, para gozar de una larga vida en la tierra de la que van a tomar posesión.
