Deuteronomy 4

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 'And now, Israel, listen to the laws and customs which I am teaching you today, so that, by observingthem, you may survive to enter and take possession of the country which Yahweh, God of your ancestors, isgiving you.	1 Ed ora, o Israele, ascolta i precetti e le leggi che io ti insegno, affinchè, mettendole in pratica, tu possa vivere ed entrar nel possesso della terra che vi darà il Signore Dio dei padri vostri.
2 You must add nothing to what I command you, and take nothing from it, but keep the commandmentsof Yahweh your God just as I lay them down for you.	2 Non aggiungerete nè toglierete alla parola che io vi dico, ma osserverete i comandamenti del Signore Dio vostro, che io vi prescrivo.
3 You can see for yourselves what Yahweh has done about the Baal of Peor; Yahweh your God hasdestroyed al those of you who fol owed the Baal of Peor;	3 Gli occhi vostri hanno veduto quanto il Signore ha fatto contro Beelfegor, e come ha distrutto di mezzo a voi tutti gli adoratori di esso:
4 but those of you who stayed faithful to Yahweh your God are all alive today.	4 mentre voi che siete stati fedeli al Signore Dio vostro, oggi siete tutti vivi.
5 Look: as Yahweh my God commanded me, I have taught you laws and customs, for you to observe inthe country of which you are going to take possession.	5 Come sapete, io vi ho insegnati i precetti e le leggi secondo l'ordine del Signore mio Dio, quindi voi nella terra che state per possedere, li metterete in pratica,
6 Keep them, put them into practice, and other peoples will admire your wisdom and prudence. Oncethey know what al these laws are, they wil exclaim, "No other people is as wise and prudent as this greatnation!"	6 li osserverete e li manderete ad effetto. Questa è la vostra sapienza e la vostra intelligenza nel cospetto dei popoli, i quali, udendo parlare di tutti questi precetti, diranno: Ecco un popolo savio e intelligente, una grande nazione!
7 And indeed, what great nation has its gods as near as Yahweh our God is to us whenever we cal tohim?	7 Non vi è altra nazione sì grande che abbia i suoi dèi così vicini come il nostro Dio è presente a tutte le nostre preghiere.
8 And what great nation has laws and customs as upright as the entirety of this Law which I am layingdown for you today?	8 E qual'è l'altra nazione così famosa che abbia cerimonie e ordinazioni così giuste, e tutta questa legge che io oggi esporrò davanti ai vostri occhi?
9 'But take care, as you value your lives! Do not forget the things which you yourselves have seen, or letthem slip from your heart as long as you live; teach them, rather, to your children and to your children's children.	9 Bada dunque con ogni cura a te stesso e all'anima tua. Le cose che i tuoi occhi han veduto non le dimenticare, nè t'escano dal cuore finché tu campi. Insegnale ai tuoi figli e ai tuoi nipoti.
10 The day you stood at Horeb in the presence of Yahweh your God, Yahweh said to me, "Summon thepeople to me; I want them to hear me speaking, so that they will learn to fear me al the days they live on earth,and teach this to their children."	10 Il giorno in cui tu stesti dinanzi al Signore Dio tuo in Oreb, quando il Signore mi parlò, dicendo: Radunami il popolo, affinchè, udendo le mie parole, imparino a temermi per tutto il tempo che vivono sulla terra, e ammaestrino i loro figlioli,
11 So you came and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain flamed to the very sky, a skydarkened by cloud, murky and thunderous.	11 voi vi appressaste alle falde del monte che ardeva fino al cielo, tra le tenebre, le nubi e la caligine.
12 Yahweh then spoke to you from the heart of the fire; you heard the sound of words but saw no shape;there was only a voice.	12 Il Signore parlò a voi di mezzo al fuoco. Voi udiste il suono delle sue parole, senza vederne per nulla l'aspetto.
13 He revealed his covenant to you and commanded you to observe it, the Ten Words which he inscribedon two tablets of stone.	13 Vi fece conoscere il suo patto, ordinandovi di metterlo in pratica, e i dieci comandamenti, che scrisse su di due tavole di pietra.
14 Yahweh then ordered me to teach you the laws and customs that you were to observe in the countryinto which you are about to cross, to take possession of it.	14 Allora mi ordinò d'insegnarvi le cerimonie e le leggi che dovete osservare nella terra che siete per possedere.
15 'Hence, be very careful what you do. Since you saw no shape that day at Horeb when Yahweh spoketo you from the heart of the fire,	15 Badate dunque con ogni cura alle vostre anime. Voi non vedeste figura alcuna nel giorno in cui il Signore vi parlò sull'Oreb di mezzo al fuoco,
16 see that you do not corrupt yourselves by making an image in the shape of anything whatever: be itstatue of man or of woman,	16 affinché, ingannati, non vi facciate qualche rappresentazione scolpita, o imagine d'uomo o di donna,
17 or of any animal on the earth, or of any bird that flies in the heavens,	17 o rappresentazione di qualunque animale che è sulla terra, o di uccelli che volano sotto il cielo,
18 or of any reptile that crawls on the ground, or of any fish in the waters under the earth.	18 o di rettili che strisciano sopra la terra, o di pesci che stanno sotto terra, nelle acque;
19 When you raise your eyes to heaven, when you see the sun, the moon, the stars -- the entire array ofheaven -- do not be tempted to worship them and serve them. Yahweh your God has al otted these to al theother peoples under heaven,	19 affinchè, alzando gli occhi al cielo e vedendo il sole, la luna e tutte le stelle del cielo, sedotto dall'errore, non ti prostri ad adorare, a render culto a quelle cose che il Signore tuo Dio ha create per servire a tutte le genti che sono sotto il cielo,
20 but Yahweh has chosen you, bringing you out of the iron-foundry, Egypt, to be his own people, hisown people as you stil are today.	20 mentre voi il Signore vi ha presi e tratti dalla ferrea fornace dell'Egitto per aver un popolo tutto suo, com'è al presente.
21 'Yahweh is angry with me because of you; he has sworn that I shall not cross the Jordan or enter thefine country which Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage.	21 Ma il Signore si sdegnò contro di me a causa vostra e giurò che io non passerei il Giordano e non entrerei nell'ottimo paese che egli sta per darvi.
22 Yes, I am to die in this country; I shal not cross this Jordan; you wil go over and take possession ofthat rich land.	22 Ecco io devo morire in questo paese, senza passar il Giordano: voi lo passerete e possederete la bella terra.
23 Be careful not to forget the covenant which Yahweh your God has made with you, by sculpting animage or making a statue of anything, since Yahweh your God has forbidden this;	23 Bada di non dimenticarti giammai del patto che ha fatto teco il Signore Dio tuo, e di non farti alcuna rappresentazione scolpita di quelle cose che il Signore ha vietato di fare
24 for Yahweh your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.	24 perchè il Signore Dio tuo è un fuoco divoratore, un Dio geloso.
25 'When you have fathered children and grandchildren and have grown old in the country, when youhave grown corrupt and made some image, doing what Yahweh regards as wrong and so provoking his anger-	25 Se, quando, avuti figli e nipoti, avrete dimorato nella terra, ingannati vi farete qualche rappresentazione, facendo così il male davanti al Signore e provocandolo ad ira,
26 today I cal heaven and earth to witness against you -- you wil quickly vanish from the country whichyou are crossing the Jordan to possess. Your days will not be prolonged there, for you wil be utterly destroyed.	26 voi, ne chiamo oggi in testimonio il cielo e la terra, ben presto scomparirete dal paese che, passato il Giordano? possederete: non vi starete a lungo, perchè il Signore vi sterminerà,
27 Yahweh wil scatter you among the peoples, and only a smal number of you wil remain among thenations where Yahweh wil have driven you.	27 e vi disperderà fra tutte le genti, e rimarrete in piccol numero fra le nazioni presso le quali vi condurrà il Signore;
28 There you wil serve gods made by human hand, of wood and of stone, that cannot see or hear, eat orsmel .	28 se là servirete a dèi fatti dalla mano degli uomini, di legno, di pietra, che non vedono, non odono, non mangiano, non odorano.
29 'If, however, from there you start searching once more for Yahweh your God, and if you search for himhonestly and sincerely, you will find him.	29 Ma quando di là cercherai il Signore Dio tuo, se lo cercherai con tutto il cuore e con tutta la contrizione dell'anima tua, lo troverai.
30 You wil suffer; everything I have said wil befal you, but in the final days you wil return to Yahwehyour God and listen to his voice.	30 Dopo che ti saranno avvenute tutte queste cose predette, nell'ultimo tempo tornerai al Signore Dio tuo e darai ascolto alla sua voce,
31 For Yahweh your God is a merciful God and wil not desert or destroy you or forget the covenantwhich he made on oath with your ancestors.	31 perchè il Signore Dio tuo è un Dio misericordioso, e non ti abbandonerà, non ti distruggerà del tutto, e non dimenticherà il patto che ha giurato ai tuoi padri.
32 'Put this question, then, to the ages that are past, that have gone before you, from when God createdthe human race on earth: Was there ever a word so majestic, from one end of heaven to the other? Wasanything like it ever heard?	32 Interroga pure i tempi antichi che furon prima di te, dal giorno in cui Dio creò l'uomo sopra la terra, da un estremo all'altro del cielo, se sia mai avvenuta una cosa come questa, se si sia mai inteso
33 Did ever a people hear the voice of the living God speaking from the heart of the fire, as you haveheard it, and remain alive?	33 che un popolo abbia Udita la voce di Dio parlante di mezzo al fuoco, come tu, senza perdere la vita, la sentisti,
34 Has it ever been known before that any god took action himself to bring one nation out of another one,by ordeals, signs, wonders, war with mighty hand and outstretched arm, by fearsome terrors -- al of which thingsYahweh your God has done for you before your eyes in Egypt?	34 che un Dio sia venuto a prendersi un popolo tra le nazioni con prove, segni, portenti e battaglie, con mano forte e braccio teso, con visioni orrende, come il Signore Dio vostro fece per voi in Egitto davanti ai tuoi occhi,
35 'This he showed you, so that you might know that Yahweh is the true God and that there is no other.	35 per farti conoscere che il Signore è Dio e non ve n'è altri fuori di lui.
36 To instruct you, he made you hear his voice from heaven, and on earth he let you see his great fire,and from the heart of the fire you heard his words.	36 Dal cielo ti ha fatto udire la sua voce per ammaestrarti, sulla terra ti ha fatto vedere il suo fuoco immenso, e di mezzo al fuoco ti ha fatto udire le sue parole,
37 Because he loved your ancestors and, after them, chose their descendants, he has brought you out ofEgypt, displaying his presence and mighty power,	37 perchè egli ha amato i tuoi padri e ne ha eletta, dopo di loro, la discendenza. Egli ti ha tratto dall'Egitto, colla sua grande potenza ti è andato innanzi
38 dispossessing for you nations who were larger and stronger than you, to make way for you and to giveyou their country as your heritage, as it still is today.	38 per distruggere alla tua venuta nazioni grandissime più forti di te, introdurti nel loro paese e dartene il dominio come vedi al presente.
39 'Hence, grasp this today and meditate on it careful y: Yahweh is the true God, in heaven above as onearth beneath, he and no other.	39 Riconosci adunque oggi e ripensa nel tuo cuore che il Signore è Dio lassù in cielo e quaggiù in terra, e che non ce n'è nessun altro.
40 Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today, so that you and your children afteryou may prosper and live long in the country that Yahweh your God is giving you for ever.'	40 Osserva adunque le sue leggi e i suoi comandi, affinchè abbia bene tu e dopo di te i tuoi figli, e tu possa dimorare lungo tempo nella terra che il Signore tuo Dio sta per darti ».
41 Moses then set aside three towns in the east, beyond the Jordan,	41 Allora Mosè designò tre città al di là del Giordano, ad oriente,
42 to which any kil er might flee who had accidental y, without any previous feud, killed his fel ow; by taking refuge in one of these towns he could save his life.	42 perchè servissero di rifugio a colui che involontariamente avesse ucciso il suo prossimo, senza averlo odiato per l'addietro, in una delle quali egli potesse trovare scampo.
43 These were, for the Reubenites, Bezer in the desert on the tableland; for the Gadites, Ramoth inGilead; for the Manassehites, Golan in Bashan.	43 Furono: Bosor nel deserto, situata nella pianura campestre della tribù di Ruben; Ramot in Galaad, che è nella tribù di Gad, e Golan in Basan, che è nella tribù di Manasse.
44 This is the Law which Moses presented to the Israelites.	44 Questa è la legge che Mosè propose ai figli d'Israele,
45 These are the stipulations, the laws and the customs which Moses gave the Israelites after they hadleft Egypt,	45 e questi sono i precetti e le cerimonie e le ordinazioni che egli prescrisse ai figli d'Israele, dopo che furono usciti dall'Egitto,
46 beyond the Jordan in the val ey near Beth-Peor, in the country of Sihon the Amorite king who hadlived at Heshbon. Moses and the Israelites had defeated him when they left Egypt,	46 al di là del Giordano, nella valle di faccia al tempio di Fogor, nella terra di Sehon re degli Amorrei, che abitò in Esebon e fu disfatto da Mosè e dai figli d'Israele Usciti dall'Egitto.
47 and had taken possession of his country, as wel as that of Og king of Bashan -- two Amorite kings tothe east beyond the Jordan,	47 Essi presero possesso della terra di lui e della terra di Og re di Basan (due re Amorrei che erano di là del Giordano, ad oriente),
48 from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Val ey, al the way to Mount Sion (that is, Hermon) -	48 da Aroer, che è sulla riva del torrente Arnon, fino al monte Sion, che dicesi anche Ermon,
49 and of the whole Arabah east of the Jordan as far as the Sea of the Arabah, at the foot of the slopesof Pisgah.	49 tutta la pianura oltre il Giordano, verso oriente, fino al mare del deserto, e fino alle fal delle monte Fasga.
