Deuteronomy 4

1 'And now, Israel, listen to the laws and customs which I am teaching you today, so that, by observingthem, you may survive to enter and take possession of the country which Yahweh, God of your ancestors, isgiving you.	1 Or adunque ascolta, o Israele, i riti, e le leggi che io t'insegno, affinché osservandoli tu abbi vita, ed entri al possesso della terra che il Signore Dio dei padri vostri darà a voi.
2 You must add nothing to what I command you, and take nothing from it, but keep the commandmentsof Yahweh your God just as I lay them down for you.	2 Non aggiungerete, né toglierete alla parola ch'io vi annunzio: osservate i comandamenti del Signore Dio vostro, i quali io intimo a voi.
3 You can see for yourselves what Yahweh has done about the Baal of Peor; Yahweh your God hasdestroyed al those of you who fol owed the Baal of Peor;	3 Gli occhi vostri hanno veduto tutto quello che il Signore ha fatto contro Beelphegor, come egli ha annichilali tutti i suoi adoratori dintorno a voi.
4 but those of you who stayed faithful to Yahweh your God are all alive today.	4 E voi, che state uniti col Signore Dio vostro, siete tutti in vita fino a questo dì,
5 Look: as Yahweh my God commanded me, I have taught you laws and customs, for you to observe inthe country of which you are going to take possession.	5 Voi sapete, come io vi ho insegnati i precetti, e i riti, quali il Signore Dio mio a me gl'intimò: così voi li metterete in esecuzione nella terra, che siete per possedere,
6 Keep them, put them into practice, and other peoples will admire your wisdom and prudence. Oncethey know what al these laws are, they wil exclaim, "No other people is as wise and prudent as this greatnation!"	6 E gli osserverete, e li ridurrete ad effetto. Imperocché qui sta la vostra sapienza, e la prudenza al cospetto delle nazioni, affinché queste udendo raccontare tutti questi comandamenti, dicano: Ecco un popolo saggio e prudente, popolo grande.
7 And indeed, what great nation has its gods as near as Yahweh our God is to us whenever we cal tohim?	7 Non v'ha certo altra nazione, per grande ch'ella sia, la quale tanto vicini a sé abbia i suoi dei, come il Dio nostro è presente a tutte le nostre preghiere.
8 And what great nation has laws and customs as upright as the entirety of this Law which I am layingdown for you today?	8 Imperocché qual altra nazione v'ha egli cotanto illustre, che abbia e ceremonie, e regole di giustizia, e tutta la legge, quale è quella che io esporrò oggi dinanzi agli occhi vostri?
9 'But take care, as you value your lives! Do not forget the things which you yourselves have seen, or letthem slip from your heart as long as you live; teach them, rather, to your children and to your children's children.	9 Custodisci adunque te stesso, e l'anima tua con sollecitudine. Non ti dimenticare delle cose, che gli occhi tuoi han vedute, e non escano dal cuor tuo per tutti i giorni della tua vita. Tu le racconterai a' tuoi figliuoli e nipoti,
10 The day you stood at Horeb in the presence of Yahweh your God, Yahweh said to me, "Summon thepeople to me; I want them to hear me speaking, so that they will learn to fear me al the days they live on earth,and teach this to their children."	10 Cominciando dal giorno, in cui tu fosti dinanzi al tuo Dio a Horeb, allorché il Signore parlommi, e disse: Raduna a me il popolo, affinché odan le mie parole, e imparino a temermi per tutto il tempo, che vivono sulla terra, e ciò insegnino a’ loro figliuoli.
11 So you came and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain flamed to the very sky, a skydarkened by cloud, murky and thunderous.	11 E voi vi appressaste alle falde del monte, il quale ardeva infino al cielo: ed era circondato da una tenebrosa nuvola e da caligine.
12 Yahweh then spoke to you from the heart of the fire; you heard the sound of words but saw no shape;there was only a voice.	12 E il Signore parlò a voi di mezzo al fuoco. Voi udiste sua voce, ma non vedeste figura alcuna.
13 He revealed his covenant to you and commanded you to observe it, the Ten Words which he inscribedon two tablets of stone.	13 Ed ei notificò a voi la sua alleanza, la quale vi ordinò di custodire, e i dieci comandamenti, ch'egli scrisse in due tavole di pietra.
14 Yahweh then ordered me to teach you the laws and customs that you were to observe in the countryinto which you are about to cross, to take possession of it.	14 E a me ordinò allora, che v'insegnassi le cerimonie e le leggi, che dovevate osservare nella terra, di cui avrete il dominio.
15 'Hence, be very careful what you do. Since you saw no shape that day at Horeb when Yahweh spoketo you from the heart of the fire,	15 Custodite adunque con molta cura le anime vostre. Voi non vedeste figura alcuna in quel giorno, in cui il Signore parlovvi dall'Horeb di mezzo al fuoco:
16 see that you do not corrupt yourselves by making an image in the shape of anything whatever: be itstatue of man or of woman,	16 Badate, che sgraziatamente ingannati non vi formiate rappresentanza scolpita, od immagine di uomo, o di donna,
17 or of any animal on the earth, or of any bird that flies in the heavens,	17 O immagine di qualunque animale di quei che sono sulla terra, o di uccelli, che volano sotto del cielo,
18 or of any reptile that crawls on the ground, or of any fish in the waters under the earth.	18 O di rettili, che strisciano sopra la terra, o di pesci, i quali stanno sotterra nelle acque:
19 When you raise your eyes to heaven, when you see the sun, the moon, the stars -- the entire array ofheaven -- do not be tempted to worship them and serve them. Yahweh your God has al otted these to al theother peoples under heaven,	19 Che a caso alzando gli occhi al cielo, e vedendo il sole, e la luna, e tutte le stelle del cielo, tu non t'induca ingannato ad adorarle, e a render culto a queste cose create dal Signore Dio tuo in servigio di tutte le genti, che sono sotto del cielo.
20 but Yahweh has chosen you, bringing you out of the iron-foundry, Egypt, to be his own people, hisown people as you stil are today.	20 Ma il Signore vi prese, e vi trasse dalla fornace ferrea dell'Egitto per avere un popolo, che fosse sua eredità, come avviene al dì d'oggi.
21 'Yahweh is angry with me because of you; he has sworn that I shall not cross the Jordan or enter thefine country which Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage.	21 Ora il Signore si sdegnò meco a causa delle vostre parole, e giurò, che io non passerei il Giordano, e non entrerei nella terra ottima, che egli darà a voi.
22 Yes, I am to die in this country; I shal not cross this Jordan; you wil go over and take possession ofthat rich land.	22 Ecco che io muoio in questo luogo, non passerò il Giordano: voi lo passerete, e sarete padroni di un bel paese.
23 Be careful not to forget the covenant which Yahweh your God has made with you, by sculpting animage or making a statue of anything, since Yahweh your God has forbidden this;	23 Bada di non dimenticarti giammai del patto, che il Signore Dio tuo ha fermato con te: e di non farti immagine scolpita di quelle cose, delle quali il Signore ti ha vietato di farne:
24 for Yahweh your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.	24 perocché il Signore Dio tuo è un fuoco divoratore, un Dio geloso.
25 'When you have fathered children and grandchildren and have grown old in the country, when youhave grown corrupt and made some image, doing what Yahweh regards as wrong and so provoking his anger-	25 Se dopo aver avuti e figliuoli e nipoti, ed aver passato assai tempo in questa terra, voi ingannati vi formerete alcuna immagine, facendo cosa rea dinanzi al Signore Dio vostro, onde a sdegno lo provochiate:
26 today I cal heaven and earth to witness against you -- you wil quickly vanish from the country whichyou are crossing the Jordan to possess. Your days will not be prolonged there, for you wil be utterly destroyed.	26 In testimoni io chiamo oggi il cielo e la terra, come ben presto sarete espulsi da quel paese, di cui, passato il Giordano, entrerete in possesso: voi non vi starete per lungo tempo, ma vi sterminerà il Signore,
27 Yahweh wil scatter you among the peoples, and only a smal number of you wil remain among thenations where Yahweh wil have driven you.	27 E vi dispergerà tra tutte le nazioni: e rimarrete in piccol numero tra le genti, dove il Signore vi condurrà.
28 There you wil serve gods made by human hand, of wood and of stone, that cannot see or hear, eat orsmel .	28 E ivi servirete a dei fabbricati da mano di uomo, al legno, e alla pietra, che non veggono, e non odono, e non mangiano, e non fiutano.
29 'If, however, from there you start searching once more for Yahweh your God, and if you search for himhonestly and sincerely, you will find him.	29 Ma quando in quei luoghi cercherai il Signore Dio tuo, lo troverai; se però con tutto il cuore lo cercherai, e con tutta la contrizione dell'anima tua.
30 You wil suffer; everything I have said wil befal you, but in the final days you wil return to Yahwehyour God and listen to his voice.	30 Dopo che ti saranno avvenute tutte queste cose predette, all’ultimo tornerai al Signore Dio tuo, e udirai la sua voce.
31 For Yahweh your God is a merciful God and wil not desert or destroy you or forget the covenantwhich he made on oath with your ancestors.	31 Perocché Dio misericordioso egli è il Signore Dio tuo: egli non ti abbandonerà, né ti sterminerà totalmente, e non si dimenticherà del patto fermato con giuramento co' padri tuoi.
32 'Put this question, then, to the ages that are past, that have gone before you, from when God createdthe human race on earth: Was there ever a word so majestic, from one end of heaven to the other? Wasanything like it ever heard?	32 Informati de' tempi antichi, che furono prima di te dal giorno, in cui Dio creò l’uomo sopra la terra, da un punto del cielo sino all’opposta parte, se mai cosa tale sia avvenuta, o siasi intesa,
33 Did ever a people hear the voice of the living God speaking from the heart of the fire, as you haveheard it, and remain alive?	33 Che un popolo abbia udita la voce di Dio parlante di mezzo alle fiamme, come tu la udisti, e non perdesti la vita:
34 Has it ever been known before that any god took action himself to bring one nation out of another one,by ordeals, signs, wonders, war with mighty hand and outstretched arm, by fearsome terrors -- al of which thingsYahweh your God has done for you before your eyes in Egypt?	34 Che Dio sia venuto a prendersi un popolo tra le nazioni per mezzo di tentazioni, di segni, e di portenti, per via di combattimenti, con fortezza grande, con braccio steso, con visioni orrende, e con tutte quelle cose, che il Signore Dio vostro fece per voi in Egitto sotto gli occhi tuoi;
35 'This he showed you, so that you might know that Yahweh is the true God and that there is no other.	35 Affinché tu conoscessi, che il Signore egli è Dio, e altro non havvene fuori di lui.
36 To instruct you, he made you hear his voice from heaven, and on earth he let you see his great fire,and from the heart of the fire you heard his words.	36 Ti fé udir la sua voce dal cielo per ammaestrarti, e sulla terra ti fé vedere il suo fuoco grandissimo, e tu udisti sua voce di mezzo al fuoco:
37 Because he loved your ancestors and, after them, chose their descendants, he has brought you out ofEgypt, displaying his presence and mighty power,	37 Perché amò i padri tuoi, e i loro discenti elesse dopo di loro. E andando innanzi a te colla possanza sua grande, ti cavò dall'Egitto,
38 dispossessing for you nations who were larger and stronger than you, to make way for you and to giveyou their country as your heritage, as it still is today.	38 Per isterminare alla tua venuta nazioni grandissime, e più forti di te, e introdurti nel loro paese, e dartene il dominio, come al giorno d'oggi tu vedi.
39 'Hence, grasp this today and meditate on it careful y: Yahweh is the true God, in heaven above as onearth beneath, he and no other.	39 Conosci adunque in quest'oggi, e ripensa in cuor tuo, che il Signore medesimo egli è Dio lassù in cielo, e quaggiù in terra, e non ve n'ha alcun altro.
40 Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today, so that you and your children afteryou may prosper and live long in the country that Yahweh your God is giving you for ever.'	40 Osserva i suoi insegnamenti, e comandi, che io ti annunzio, affinché sii felice tu, e i tuoi figliuoli dopo di te, e resti per lungo tempo nel paese, il quale sarà dato a te dal Signore Dio tuo.
41 Moses then set aside three towns in the east, beyond the Jordan,	41 Allora Mosè determinò tre città di là dal Giordano verso levante,
42 to which any kil er might flee who had accidental y, without any previous feud, killed his fel ow; by taking refuge in one of these towns he could save his life.	42 Onde chi non volendo avesse ucciso il suo prossimo senza che uno, o due giorni prima gli fosse nimico, trovasse rifugio e scampo in alcuna di queste città.
43 These were, for the Reubenites, Bezer in the desert on the tableland; for the Gadites, Ramoth inGilead; for the Manassehites, Golan in Bashan.	43 Bosor nel deserto situata in una pianura della tribù di Ruben; e Ramoth in Galaad appartenente alla tribù di Gad; e Golan in Basan, la quale è della tribù di Manasse.
44 This is the Law which Moses presented to the Israelites.	44 Questa è la legge esposta da Mosè a' figliuoli d’Israele.
45 These are the stipulations, the laws and the customs which Moses gave the Israelites after they hadleft Egypt,	45 E questi sono i precetti e le cerimonie, e le leggi, le quali egli intimò ai figliuoli d'Israele, dopo che furono usciti dall'Egitto,
46 beyond the Jordan in the val ey near Beth-Peor, in the country of Sihon the Amorite king who hadlived at Heshbon. Moses and the Israelites had defeated him when they left Egypt,	46 Di là dal Giordano nella valle dirimpetto al tempio di Phogor nella terra di Sehon re degli Amorrhei, il quale abitò in Hesebon, e fu vinto da Mosè. Or i figliuoli d’Israele usciti dall'Egitto
47 and had taken possession of his country, as wel as that of Og king of Bashan -- two Amorite kings tothe east beyond the Jordan,	47 Occuparono le terre di lui, e la terra di Og re di Basan, due re Amorrhei, che stavan di là dal Giordano a levante:
48 from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Val ey, al the way to Mount Sion (that is, Hermon) -	48 Da Aroer, che è situata sulla ripa del torrente Arnon sino al monte Sion, che dicesi anche Hermon,
49 and of the whole Arabah east of the Jordan as far as the Sea of the Arabah, at the foot of the slopesof Pisgah.	49 Cioè tutta la pianura orientale di là del Giordano fino al mare del deserto, e fino alle falde del monte Phasga.
