Deuteronomy 4

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 'And now, Israel, listen to the laws and customs which I am teaching you today, so that, by observingthem, you may survive to enter and take possession of the country which Yahweh, God of your ancestors, isgiving you.	1 Ascolta ora, Israele, le prescrizioni e i decreti che vi insegno, affinché li mettiate in pratica: perché viviate ed entriate a prendere possesso della terra che il Signore, Dio dei vostri padri, vi dona.
2 You must add nothing to what I command you, and take nothing from it, but keep the commandmentsof Yahweh your God just as I lay them down for you.	2 Non aggiungerete nulla a quanto vi ordino e non toglierete nulla, osservando i precetti del Signore vostro Dio, che io vi ordino.
3 You can see for yourselves what Yahweh has done about the Baal of Peor; Yahweh your God hasdestroyed al those of you who fol owed the Baal of Peor;	3 I vostri occhi videro quanto ha fatto il Signore vostro Dio a Baal-Peor: chiunque ha seguito Baal-Peor, il Signore tuo Dio lo ha sterminato da te.
4 but those of you who stayed faithful to Yahweh your God are all alive today.	4 Ma voi che avete aderito al Signore vostro Dio, oggi siete tutti vivi.
5 Look: as Yahweh my God commanded me, I have taught you laws and customs, for you to observe inthe country of which you are going to take possession.	5 Vedi, vi ho insegnato prescrizioni e decreti come mi ha ordinato il Signore mio Dio, affinché li mettiate in pratica nella terra di cui andate a prendere possesso.
6 Keep them, put them into practice, and other peoples will admire your wisdom and prudence. Oncethey know what al these laws are, they wil exclaim, "No other people is as wise and prudent as this greatnation!"	6 Osservateli e praticateli, perché così sarete saggi e assennati agli occhi dei popoli. Quando udranno tutte queste prescrizioni, diranno: "Questa grande nazione è il solo popolo saggio e assennato".
7 And indeed, what great nation has its gods as near as Yahweh our God is to us whenever we cal tohim?	7 Difatti qual è quella grande nazione che abbia gli dèi così vicini, come il Signore nostro Dio è vicino a noi quando lo invochiamo?
8 And what great nation has laws and customs as upright as the entirety of this Law which I am layingdown for you today?	8 Qual è quella grande nazione che abbia prescrizioni e decreti così giusti come tutta questa legge che oggi io vi presento?
9 'But take care, as you value your lives! Do not forget the things which you yourselves have seen, or letthem slip from your heart as long as you live; teach them, rather, to your children and to your children's children.	9 Solo, bada a te, guardati bene dal dimenticare ciò che i tuoi occhi hanno visto, che non esca dal tuo cuore per tutti i giorni della tua vita; insegnalo ai tuoi figli e ai figli dei tuoi figli.
10 The day you stood at Horeb in the presence of Yahweh your God, Yahweh said to me, "Summon thepeople to me; I want them to hear me speaking, so that they will learn to fear me al the days they live on earth,and teach this to their children."	10 Il giorno in cui sei stato alla presenza del Signore tuo Dio all'Oreb, quando il Signore mi ha detto: "Radunami il popolo e farò sentire loro le mie parole, affinché imparino a temermi per tutti i giorni della loro vita sulla terra e le insegnino ai loro figli",
11 So you came and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain flamed to the very sky, a skydarkened by cloud, murky and thunderous.	11 voi vi siete avvicinati e siete rimasti ai piedi della montagna; il monte bruciava nel fuoco che s'innalzava in mezzo al cielo: tenebre, nuvole e nembi.
12 Yahweh then spoke to you from the heart of the fire; you heard the sound of words but saw no shape;there was only a voice.	12 Vi ha parlato il Signore in mezzo al fuoco; udivate il suono delle parole senza vedere nessuna figura: soltanto una voce.
13 He revealed his covenant to you and commanded you to observe it, the Ten Words which he inscribedon two tablets of stone.	13 Vi ha rivelato la sua alleanza, ordinandovi di praticarla: le dieci parole, e le ha scritte su due tavole di pietra.
14 Yahweh then ordered me to teach you the laws and customs that you were to observe in the countryinto which you are about to cross, to take possession of it.	14 In quel tempo mi ha ordinato di insegnarvi prescrizioni e decreti perché li pratichiate nella terra dove state per passare a prenderne possesso.
15 'Hence, be very careful what you do. Since you saw no shape that day at Horeb when Yahweh spoketo you from the heart of the fire,	15 Badate bene a voi stessi: non vedeste nessuna figura nel giorno in cui il Signore vi ha parlato all'Oreb in mezzo al fuoco;
16 see that you do not corrupt yourselves by making an image in the shape of anything whatever: be itstatue of man or of woman,	16 non prevaricate facendovi una figura scolpita di qualsiasi simulacro, immagine di maschio o di femmina,
17 or of any animal on the earth, or of any bird that flies in the heavens,	17 immagine di qualsiasi animale terrestre, immagine di qualsiasi uccello che vola nel cielo,
18 or of any reptile that crawls on the ground, or of any fish in the waters under the earth.	18 immagine di qualsiasi rettile che striscia sul suolo, immagine di qualsiasi pesce che si trova nell'acqua, sotto la terra.
19 When you raise your eyes to heaven, when you see the sun, the moon, the stars -- the entire array ofheaven -- do not be tempted to worship them and serve them. Yahweh your God has al otted these to al theother peoples under heaven,	19 Quando alzi gli occhi verso il cielo e vedi il sole, la luna, le stelle, tutto l'esercito del cielo, non lasciarti trascinare a prostrarti innanzi ad essi e a servirli, perché il Signore tuo Dio li ha dati in sorte a tutti i popoli che sono sotto il cielo.
20 but Yahweh has chosen you, bringing you out of the iron-foundry, Egypt, to be his own people, hisown people as you stil are today.	20 Ma voi, il Signore vi ha presi e vi ha fatti uscire dal crogiolo di ferro, dall'Egitto, affinché diventiate popolo di sua eredità, come siete oggi.
21 'Yahweh is angry with me because of you; he has sworn that I shall not cross the Jordan or enter thefine country which Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage.	21 Il Signore si è irritato contro di me per causa vostra; ha giurato che io non passerò il Giordano né andrò nella buona terra che egli, tuo Dio, ti dona in eredità.
22 Yes, I am to die in this country; I shal not cross this Jordan; you wil go over and take possession ofthat rich land.	22 Io morirò in questa terra, non passerò il Giordano. Voi invece passerete e occuperete quella buona terra.
23 Be careful not to forget the covenant which Yahweh your God has made with you, by sculpting animage or making a statue of anything, since Yahweh your God has forbidden this;	23 Guardatevi dal dimenticare l'alleanza che il Signore vostro Dio ha stretto con voi, e dal farvi una figura scolpita di qualsiasi genere, come ti ha ordinato il Signore tuo Dio.
24 for Yahweh your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.	24 Infatti il Signore tuo Dio è un fuoco divoratore, un Dio geloso.
25 'When you have fathered children and grandchildren and have grown old in the country, when youhave grown corrupt and made some image, doing what Yahweh regards as wrong and so provoking his anger-	25 Quando avrete avuto figli e figli dei figli, e sarete invecchiati sulla terra e avrete prevaricato facendovi una figura scolpita di qualsiasi genere, operando ciò ch'è male agli occhi del Signore tuo Dio per provocarne la collera,
26 today I cal heaven and earth to witness against you -- you wil quickly vanish from the country whichyou are crossing the Jordan to possess. Your days will not be prolonged there, for you wil be utterly destroyed.	26 oggi prendo cielo e terra a testimoni contro di voi: scomparirete presto dalla terra di cui voi andate a prendere possesso attraversando il Giordano. Non avrete lunghi giorni su di essa, sarete completamente annientati.
27 Yahweh wil scatter you among the peoples, and only a smal number of you wil remain among thenations where Yahweh wil have driven you.	27 Il Signore vi disperderà tra i popoli; di voi non resterà che un piccolo numero in mezzo a quelle nazioni tra le quali il Signore vi avrà condotto.
28 There you wil serve gods made by human hand, of wood and of stone, that cannot see or hear, eat orsmel .	28 Là servirete dèi di legno e di pietra, opera di mani umane, che non vedono, non odono, non mangiano, non odorano.
29 'If, however, from there you start searching once more for Yahweh your God, and if you search for himhonestly and sincerely, you will find him.	29 Di là tu cercherai il Signore tuo Dio e lo troverai; purché ti rivolga a lui con tutto il cuore e con tutta l'anima.
30 You wil suffer; everything I have said wil befal you, but in the final days you wil return to Yahwehyour God and listen to his voice.	30 Nella tua miseria ti ricorderai di tutte queste parole, e negli ultimi giorni tornerai al Signore tuo Dio e ascolterai la sua voce.
31 For Yahweh your God is a merciful God and wil not desert or destroy you or forget the covenantwhich he made on oath with your ancestors.	31 Poiché il Signore tuo Dio è un Dio misericordioso, non ti abbandonerà, non ti distruggerà né dimenticherà l'alleanza che ha giurato ai tuoi padri.
32 'Put this question, then, to the ages that are past, that have gone before you, from when God createdthe human race on earth: Was there ever a word so majestic, from one end of heaven to the other? Wasanything like it ever heard?	32 Interroga infatti i tempi antichi che furono prima di te, dal giorno in cui Dio creò l'uomo sulla terra; da un'estremità del cielo all'altra è mai avvenuta una cosa grande come questa? Si è sentito mai qualcosa di simile?
33 Did ever a people hear the voice of the living God speaking from the heart of the fire, as you haveheard it, and remain alive?	33 C'è forse un popolo che abbia udito la voce del Dio vivo che parla di mezzo al fuoco, come hai udito tu, e sia rimasto in vita?
34 Has it ever been known before that any god took action himself to bring one nation out of another one,by ordeals, signs, wonders, war with mighty hand and outstretched arm, by fearsome terrors -- al of which thingsYahweh your God has done for you before your eyes in Egypt?	34 Ha mai provato un Dio a venire a prendersi una nazione in mezzo a un'altra nazione, con prove, segni, portenti, lotte, con mano forte, braccio teso e grandi terrori, tutte cose che il Signore vostro Dio ha compiuto per voi in Egitto innanzi ai tuoi occhi?
35 'This he showed you, so that you might know that Yahweh is the true God and that there is no other.	35 A te questo fu mostrato affinché tu sappia che il Signore è Dio; all'infuori di lui non ce n'è altri.
36 To instruct you, he made you hear his voice from heaven, and on earth he let you see his great fire,and from the heart of the fire you heard his words.	36 Dal cielo ti ha fatto sentire la sua voce per istruirti; sulla terra ti ha mostrato il suo grande fuoco e hai udito le sue parole di mezzo al fuoco.
37 Because he loved your ancestors and, after them, chose their descendants, he has brought you out ofEgypt, displaying his presence and mighty power,	37 Perché ha amato i tuoi padri, ha scelto dopo di essi la loro posterità; ti ha fatto uscire con la sua presenza e il suo grande potere dall'Egitto,
38 dispossessing for you nations who were larger and stronger than you, to make way for you and to giveyou their country as your heritage, as it still is today.	38 per spodestare innanzi a te nazioni più grandi e potenti di te, per farti entrare e donarti la loro terra in eredità, come è appunto oggi.
39 'Hence, grasp this today and meditate on it careful y: Yahweh is the true God, in heaven above as onearth beneath, he and no other.	39 Sappi dunque oggi e medita in cuor tuo che il Signore è Dio nei cieli in alto e in basso sulla terra; lui e nessun altro.
40 Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today, so that you and your children afteryou may prosper and live long in the country that Yahweh your God is giving you for ever.'	40 Osserva le sue prescrizioni e i suoi comandi che io oggi ti impongo, affinché abbia bene tu e i tuoi figli dopo di te e prolunghi i tuoi giorni sul suolo che il Signore tuo Dio ti concede per sempre".
41 Moses then set aside three towns in the east, beyond the Jordan,	41 In quel tempo Mosè scelse tre città al di là del Giordano, a oriente,
42 to which any kil er might flee who had accidental y, without any previous feud, killed his fel ow; by taking refuge in one of these towns he could save his life.	42 perché vi si rifugiasse l'omicida che avesse ucciso il suo prossimo involontariamente, senza che prima avesse avuto odio contro di lui, di modo che rifugiandosi in una di queste città potesse salvare la vita:
43 These were, for the Reubenites, Bezer in the desert on the tableland; for the Gadites, Ramoth inGilead; for the Manassehites, Golan in Bashan.	43 Beser, nel deserto, nella regione dell'altipiano, per i Rubeniti; Ramot di Galaad per i Gaditi; Golan in Basan, per i Manassiti.
44 This is the Law which Moses presented to the Israelites.	44 Questa è la legge che Mosè propose ai figli d'Israele.
45 These are the stipulations, the laws and the customs which Moses gave the Israelites after they hadleft Egypt,	45 Queste le istruzioni, le prescrizioni e i decreti che Mosè espose ai figli d'Israele quando uscirono dall'Egitto,
46 beyond the Jordan in the val ey near Beth-Peor, in the country of Sihon the Amorite king who hadlived at Heshbon. Moses and the Israelites had defeated him when they left Egypt,	46 al di là del Giordano, nella valle in faccia a Bet-Peor, nella terra di Sicon re degli Amorrei, che abitava a Chesbon e che Mosè e i figli d'Israele avevano battuto quando uscirono dall'Egitto.
47 and had taken possession of his country, as wel as that of Og king of Bashan -- two Amorite kings tothe east beyond the Jordan,	47 Conquistarono la sua terra e la terra di Og, re di Basan, i due re degli Amorrei che erano al di là del Giordano a oriente:
48 from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Val ey, al the way to Mount Sion (that is, Hermon) -	48 da Aroer, sul bordo superiore del torrente Arnon, fino al monte Sirion, cioè l'Ermon,
49 and of the whole Arabah east of the Jordan as far as the Sea of the Arabah, at the foot of the slopesof Pisgah.	49 e tutta l'Araba al di là del Giordano, a oriente, fino al mare dell'Araba sotto i contrafforti del Pisga.
