NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
'And now, Israel, listen to the laws and customs which I am teaching you today, so that, by observingthem, you may survive to enter and take possession of the country which Yahweh, God of your ancestors, isgiving you.1 Et nunc, Israel, audi praecepta et iudicia, quae ego doceo vos, ut facientes ea vivatis et ingredientes possideatis terram, quam Dominus, Deus patrum vestrorum, daturus est vobis.
You must add nothing to what I command you, and take nothing from it, but keep the commandmentsof Yahweh your God just as I lay them down for you.2 Non addetis ad verbum, quod vobis loquor, neque auferetis ex eo; custodite mandata Domini Dei vestri, quae ego praecipio vobis.
You can see for yourselves what Yahweh has done about the Baal of Peor; Yahweh your God hasdestroyed al those of you who fol owed the Baal of Peor;3 Oculi vestri viderunt omnia, quae fecit Dominus contra Baalphegor, quomodo contriverit omnes cultores eius de medio vestri;
but those of you who stayed faithful to Yahweh your God are all alive today.4 vos autem, qui adhaeretis Domino Deo vestro, vivitis universi usque in praesentem diem.
Look: as Yahweh my God commanded me, I have taught you laws and customs, for you to observe inthe country of which you are going to take possession.5 En docui vos praecepta atque iudicia, sicut mandavit mihi Dominus Deus meus, ut faceretis ea in terra, quam possessuri estis,
Keep them, put them into practice, and other peoples will admire your wisdom and prudence. Oncethey know what al these laws are, they wil exclaim, "No other people is as wise and prudent as this greatnation!"6 et observaretis et impleretis opere. Haec est enim vestra sapientia et intellectus coram populis, ut audientes universa praecepta haec dicant: “En populus sapiens et intellegens, gens magna haec!”.
And indeed, what great nation has its gods as near as Yahweh our God is to us whenever we cal tohim?7 Quae est enim alia natio tam grandis, quae habeat deos appropinquantes sibi, sicut Dominus Deus noster adest cunctis obsecrationibus nostris?
And what great nation has laws and customs as upright as the entirety of this Law which I am layingdown for you today?8 Et quae est alia gens sic inclita, ut habeat praecepta iustaque iudicia, sicut est universa lex haec, quam ego proponam hodie ante oculos vestros?
'But take care, as you value your lives! Do not forget the things which you yourselves have seen, or letthem slip from your heart as long as you live; teach them, rather, to your children and to your children's children.9 Custodi igitur temetipsum et animam tuam sollicite, ne obliviscaris verborum, quae viderunt oculi tui, et ne excidant de corde tuo cunctis diebus vitae tuae. Docebis ea filios ac nepotes tuos
The day you stood at Horeb in the presence of Yahweh your God, Yahweh said to me, "Summon thepeople to me; I want them to hear me speaking, so that they will learn to fear me al the days they live on earth,and teach this to their children."10 die, in quo stetisti coram Domino Deo tuo in Horeb, quando Dominus locutus est mihi: “Congrega ad me populum, ut audiant sermones meos et discant timere me omni tempore, quo vivunt in terra, doceantque filios suos”.
So you came and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain flamed to the very sky, a skydarkened by cloud, murky and thunderous.11 Et accessistis et stetistis ad radices montis, qui ardebat usque ad caelum, erantque in eo tenebrae, nubes et caligo.
Yahweh then spoke to you from the heart of the fire; you heard the sound of words but saw no shape;there was only a voice.12 Locutusque est Dominus ad vos de medio ignis; vocem verborum audistis et formam penitus non vidistis.
He revealed his covenant to you and commanded you to observe it, the Ten Words which he inscribedon two tablets of stone.13 Et ostendit vobis pactum suum, quod praecepit, ut faceretis, et decem verba, quae scripsit in duabus tabulis lapideis.
Yahweh then ordered me to teach you the laws and customs that you were to observe in the countryinto which you are about to cross, to take possession of it.14 Mihique mandavit in illo tempore, ut docerem vos praecepta et iudicia, quae facere deberetis in terra, quam possessuri estis.
'Hence, be very careful what you do. Since you saw no shape that day at Horeb when Yahweh spoketo you from the heart of the fire,15 Custodite igitur sollicite animas vestras. Non vidistis aliquam similitudinem in die, qua locutus est vobis Dominus in Horeb de medio ignis;
see that you do not corrupt yourselves by making an image in the shape of anything whatever: be itstatue of man or of woman,16 ne forte corrupti faciatis vobis sculptam similitudinem, imaginem masculi vel feminae,
or of any animal on the earth, or of any bird that flies in the heavens,17 similitudinem omnium iumentorum, quae sunt super terram, vel avium sub caelo volantium
or of any reptile that crawls on the ground, or of any fish in the waters under the earth.18 atque reptilium, quae moventur in terra, sive piscium, qui sub terra morantur in aquis;
When you raise your eyes to heaven, when you see the sun, the moon, the stars -- the entire array ofheaven -- do not be tempted to worship them and serve them. Yahweh your God has al otted these to al theother peoples under heaven,19 et ne forte oculis elevatis ad caelum videas solem et lunam et astra, omnem exercitum caeli, et errore deceptus adores ea et colas, quae attribuit Dominus Deus tuus cunctis gentibus, quae sub caelo sunt.
but Yahweh has chosen you, bringing you out of the iron-foundry, Egypt, to be his own people, hisown people as you stil are today.20 Vos autem tulit Dominus et eduxit de fornace ferrea Aegypti, ut haberet populum hereditarium, sicut est in praesenti die.
'Yahweh is angry with me because of you; he has sworn that I shall not cross the Jordan or enter thefine country which Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage.21 Iratusque est Dominus contra me propter sermones vestros et iuravit, ut non transirem Iordanem nec ingrederer terram optimam, quam Dominus Deus tuus daturus est tibi in haereditatem.
Yes, I am to die in this country; I shal not cross this Jordan; you wil go over and take possession ofthat rich land.22 Ecce morior in hac humo, non transibo Iordanem; vos transibitis et possidebitis terram egregiam hanc.
Be careful not to forget the covenant which Yahweh your God has made with you, by sculpting animage or making a statue of anything, since Yahweh your God has forbidden this;23 Cavete, ne quando obliviscamini pacti Domini Dei vestri, quod pepigit vobiscum, et faciatis vobis sculptam similitudinem omnium, quae fieri Dominus Deus tuus prohibuit;
for Yahweh your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.24 quia Dominus Deus tuus ignis consumens est, Deus aemulator.
'When you have fathered children and grandchildren and have grown old in the country, when youhave grown corrupt and made some image, doing what Yahweh regards as wrong and so provoking his anger-25 Si genueris filios ac nepotes, et morati fueritis in terra corruptique feceritis aliquam similitudinem sculptam patrantes malum coram Domino Deo tuo, ut eum ad iracundiam provocetis,
today I cal heaven and earth to witness against you -- you wil quickly vanish from the country whichyou are crossing the Jordan to possess. Your days will not be prolonged there, for you wil be utterly destroyed.26 testes invoco contra vos hodie caelum et terram, cito perituros vos esse de terra, quam, transito Iordane, possessuri estis: non habitabitis in ea longo tempore, sed delebit vos Dominus
Yahweh wil scatter you among the peoples, and only a smal number of you wil remain among thenations where Yahweh wil have driven you.27 atque disperget in gentes, et remanebitis pauci in nationibus, ad quas vos ducturus est Dominus.
There you wil serve gods made by human hand, of wood and of stone, that cannot see or hear, eat orsmel .28 Ibique servietis diis, qui hominum manu fabricati sunt, ligno et lapidi, qui non vident nec audiunt nec comedunt nec odorantur.
'If, however, from there you start searching once more for Yahweh your God, and if you search for himhonestly and sincerely, you will find him.29 Cumque quaesieris ibi Dominum Deum tuum, invenies eum, si tamen toto corde quaesieris eum et tota anima tua.
You wil suffer; everything I have said wil befal you, but in the final days you wil return to Yahwehyour God and listen to his voice.30 Postquam in tribulatione tua te invenerint omnia, quae praedicta sunt, novissimo tempore reverteris ad Dominum Deum tuum et audies vocem eius;
For Yahweh your God is a merciful God and wil not desert or destroy you or forget the covenantwhich he made on oath with your ancestors.31 quia Deus misericors Dominus Deus tuus est, non dimittet te nec omnino delebit neque obliviscetur pacti, in quo iuravit patribus tuis.
'Put this question, then, to the ages that are past, that have gone before you, from when God createdthe human race on earth: Was there ever a word so majestic, from one end of heaven to the other? Wasanything like it ever heard?32 Interroga de diebus antiquis, qui fuerunt ante te ex die, quo creavit Deus hominem super terram, et a summo caeli usque ad summum eius, si facta est aliquando huiuscemodi res magna, aut umquam cognitum est,
Did ever a people hear the voice of the living God speaking from the heart of the fire, as you haveheard it, and remain alive?33 num audivit populus vocem Dei loquentis de medio ignis, sicut tu audisti et vixisti?
Has it ever been known before that any god took action himself to bring one nation out of another one,by ordeals, signs, wonders, war with mighty hand and outstretched arm, by fearsome terrors -- al of which thingsYahweh your God has done for you before your eyes in Egypt?34 Aut tentavit Deus, ut ingrederetur et tolleret sibi gentem de medio nationis per tentationes, signa atque portenta, per pugnam et robustam manum extentumque brachium et terrores magnos, iuxta omnia, quae fecit pro vobis Dominus Deus vester in Aegypto, videntibus oculis tuis?
'This he showed you, so that you might know that Yahweh is the true God and that there is no other.35 Tibi monstratum est, ut scires quoniam Dominus ipse est Deus, et non est alius praeter eum.
To instruct you, he made you hear his voice from heaven, and on earth he let you see his great fire,and from the heart of the fire you heard his words.36 De caelo te fecit audire vocem suam, ut doceret te, et in terra ostendit tibi ignem suum maximum; et audisti verba illius de medio ignis,
Because he loved your ancestors and, after them, chose their descendants, he has brought you out ofEgypt, displaying his presence and mighty power,37 quia dilexit patres tuos et elegit semen eorum post eos. Eduxitque te vultu suo in virtute sua magna ex Aegypto,
dispossessing for you nations who were larger and stronger than you, to make way for you and to giveyou their country as your heritage, as it still is today.38 ut expelleret nationes maiores et fortiores te in introitu tuo et introduceret te daretque tibi terram earum in possessionem, sicut cernis in praesenti die.
'Hence, grasp this today and meditate on it careful y: Yahweh is the true God, in heaven above as onearth beneath, he and no other.39 Scito ergo hodie et cogitato in corde tuo quod Dominus ipse sit Deus in caelo sursum et in terra deorsum, et non sit alius.
Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today, so that you and your children afteryou may prosper and live long in the country that Yahweh your God is giving you for ever.'40 Custodi praecepta eius atque mandata, quae ego praecipio tibi hodie, ut bene sit tibi et filiis tuis post te, et permaneas multo tempore super terram, quam Dominus Deus tuus daturus est tibi ”.
Moses then set aside three towns in the east, beyond the Jordan,41 Tunc separavit Moyses tres civitates trans Iordanem ad orientalem plagam,
to which any kil er might flee who had accidental y, without any previous feud, killed his fel ow; by taking refuge in one of these towns he could save his life.42 ut confugiat ad eas, qui occiderit nolens proximum suum, nec fuerit inimicus ante unum et alterum diem, et ad harum aliquam urbium possit evadere et vivat:
These were, for the Reubenites, Bezer in the desert on the tableland; for the Gadites, Ramoth inGilead; for the Manassehites, Golan in Bashan.43 Bosor in solitudine, quae sita est in terra campestri, pro tribu Ruben, et Ramoth in Galaad pro tribu Gad et Golan in Basan pro tribu Manasse.
This is the Law which Moses presented to the Israelites.44 Ista est lex, quam proposuit Moyses coram filiis Israel;
These are the stipulations, the laws and the customs which Moses gave the Israelites after they hadleft Egypt,45 haec testimonia et praecepta atque iudicia, quae locutus est ad filios Israel, quando egressi sunt de Aegypto,
beyond the Jordan in the val ey near Beth-Peor, in the country of Sihon the Amorite king who hadlived at Heshbon. Moses and the Israelites had defeated him when they left Egypt,46 trans Iordanem in valle contra Bethphegor, in terra Sehon regis Amorraei, qui habitavit in Hesebon, quem percussit Moyses et filii Israel egressi ex Aegypto.
and had taken possession of his country, as wel as that of Og king of Bashan -- two Amorite kings tothe east beyond the Jordan,47 Et possederunt terram eius et terram Og regis Basan, duorum regum Amorraeorum, qui erant trans Iordanem ad solis ortum,
from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Val ey, al the way to Mount Sion (that is, Hermon) -48 ab Aroer, quae sita est super ripam torrentis Arnon, usque ad montem Sion, qui est Hermon,
and of the whole Arabah east of the Jordan as far as the Sea of the Arabah, at the foot of the slopesof Pisgah.49 omnem Arabam trans Iordanem ad orientalem plagam usque ad mare Arabae et usque ad radices montis Phasga.
