Deuteronomy 4

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 'And now, Israel, listen to the laws and customs which I am teaching you today, so that, by observingthem, you may survive to enter and take possession of the country which Yahweh, God of your ancestors, isgiving you.	1 Y ahora, Israel, escucha los preceptos y las normas que yo os enseño para que las pongáis en práctica, a fin de que viváis y entréis a tomar posesión de la tierra que os da Yahveh, Dios de vuestros padres.
2 You must add nothing to what I command you, and take nothing from it, but keep the commandmentsof Yahweh your God just as I lay them down for you.	2 No añadireís nada a lo que yo os mando, ni quitaréis nada; para así guardar los mandamientos de Yahveh vuestro Dios que yo os prescribo.
3 You can see for yourselves what Yahweh has done about the Baal of Peor; Yahweh your God hasdestroyed al those of you who fol owed the Baal of Peor;	3 Vuestros propios ojos han visto lo que hizo Yahveh con Baal Peor: a todos los que habían seguido a Baal Peor, Yahveh tu Dios los exterminó de en medio de ti;
4 but those of you who stayed faithful to Yahweh your God are all alive today.	4 en cambio vosotros, que habéis seguido unidos a Yahveh vuestro Dios, estáis hoy todos vivos.
5 Look: as Yahweh my God commanded me, I have taught you laws and customs, for you to observe inthe country of which you are going to take possession.	5 Mira, como Yahveh mi Dios me ha mandado, yo os enseño preceptos y normas para que los pongáis en práctica en la tierra en la que vais a entrar para tomarla en posesión.
6 Keep them, put them into practice, and other peoples will admire your wisdom and prudence. Oncethey know what al these laws are, they wil exclaim, "No other people is as wise and prudent as this greatnation!"	6 Guardadlos y practicadlos, porque ellos son vuestra sabiduría y vuestra inteligencia a los ojos de los pueblos que, cuando tengan noticia de todos estos preceptos, dirán: «Cierto que esta gran nación es un pueblo sabio e inteligente».
7 And indeed, what great nation has its gods as near as Yahweh our God is to us whenever we cal tohim?	7 Y, en efecto, ¿hay alguna nación tan grande que tenga los dioses tan cerca como lo está Yahveh nuestro Dios siempre que le invocamos?
8 And what great nation has laws and customs as upright as the entirety of this Law which I am layingdown for you today?	8 Y ¿cuál es la gran nación cuyos preceptos y normas sean tan justos como toda esta Ley que yo os expongo hoy?
9 'But take care, as you value your lives! Do not forget the things which you yourselves have seen, or letthem slip from your heart as long as you live; teach them, rather, to your children and to your children's children.	9 Pero ten cuidado y guárdate bien, no vayas o olvidarte de estas cosas que tus ojos han visto, ni dejes que se aparten de tu corazón en todos los días de tu vida; enséñaselas, por el contrario, a tus hijos y a los hijos de tus hijos.
10 The day you stood at Horeb in the presence of Yahweh your God, Yahweh said to me, "Summon thepeople to me; I want them to hear me speaking, so that they will learn to fear me al the days they live on earth,and teach this to their children."	10 El día que estabas en el Horeb en presencia de Yahveh tu Dios, cuando Yahveh me dijo: «Reúneme al pueblo para que yo les haga oír mis palabras a fin de que aprendan a tenerme mientras vivan en el suelo y se las enseñen a sus hijos»,
11 So you came and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain flamed to the very sky, a skydarkened by cloud, murky and thunderous.	11 vosotros os acercasteis y permanecisteis al pie de la montaña, mientras la montaña ardía en llamas hasta el mismo cielo, entre tinieblas de nube y densa niebla.
12 Yahweh then spoke to you from the heart of the fire; you heard the sound of words but saw no shape;there was only a voice.	12 Yahveh os habló de en medio del fuego; vosotros oíais rumor de palabras, pero no percibíais figura alguna, sino sólo una voz.
13 He revealed his covenant to you and commanded you to observe it, the Ten Words which he inscribedon two tablets of stone.	13 El os reveló su alianza, que os mandó poner en práctica, las diez Palabras que escribió en dos tablas de piedra.
14 Yahweh then ordered me to teach you the laws and customs that you were to observe in the countryinto which you are about to cross, to take possession of it.	14 Y a mí me mandó entonces Yahveh que os enseñase los preceptos y normas que vosotros deberíais poner en práctica en la tierra en la que vais a entrar para tomarla en posesión.
15 'Hence, be very careful what you do. Since you saw no shape that day at Horeb when Yahweh spoketo you from the heart of the fire,	15 Tened mucho cuidado de vosotros mismos: puesto que no visteis figura alguna el día en que Yahveh os habló en el Horeb de en medio del fuego,
16 see that you do not corrupt yourselves by making an image in the shape of anything whatever: be itstatue of man or of woman,	16 no vayáis a pervertiros y os hagáis alguna escultura de cualquier representación que sea: figura masculina o femenima,
17 or of any animal on the earth, or of any bird that flies in the heavens,	17 figura de alguna de las bestias de la tierra, figura de alguna de las aves que vuelan por el cielo,
18 or of any reptile that crawls on the ground, or of any fish in the waters under the earth.	18 figura de alguno de los reptiles que serpean por el suelo, figura de alguno de los peces que hay en las aguas debajo de la tierra.
19 When you raise your eyes to heaven, when you see the sun, the moon, the stars -- the entire array ofheaven -- do not be tempted to worship them and serve them. Yahweh your God has al otted these to al theother peoples under heaven,	19 Cuando levantes tus ojos al cielo, cuando veas el sol, la luna, las estrellas y todo el ejército de los cielos, no vayas a dejarte seducir y te postres ante ellos para darles culto. Eso se lo ha repartido Yahveh tu Dios a todos los pueblos que hay debajo del cielo,
20 but Yahweh has chosen you, bringing you out of the iron-foundry, Egypt, to be his own people, hisown people as you stil are today.	20 pero a vosotros os tomó Yahveh y os sacó del horno de hierro, de Egipto, para que fueseis el pueblo de su heredad, como lo sois hoy.
21 'Yahweh is angry with me because of you; he has sworn that I shall not cross the Jordan or enter thefine country which Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage.	21 Por culpa vuestra Yahveh se irritó contra mí y juró que yo no pasaría el Jordán ni entraría en la tierra buena que Yahveh tu Dios te da en herencia.
22 Yes, I am to die in this country; I shal not cross this Jordan; you wil go over and take possession ofthat rich land.	22 Yo voy a morir en este país y no pasaré el Jordán. Vosotros en cambio lo pasaréis y poseeréis esa tierra buena.
23 Be careful not to forget the covenant which Yahweh your God has made with you, by sculpting animage or making a statue of anything, since Yahweh your God has forbidden this;	23 Guardaos, pues, de olvidar la alianza que Yahveh vuestro Dios ha concluido con vosotros, y de haceros alguna escultura o representación de todo lo que Yahveh tu Dios te ha prohibido;
24 for Yahweh your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.	24 porque Yahveh tu Dios es un fuego devorador, un Dios celoso.
25 'When you have fathered children and grandchildren and have grown old in the country, when youhave grown corrupt and made some image, doing what Yahweh regards as wrong and so provoking his anger-	25 Cuando hayas engendrado hijos y nietos y hayáis envejecido en el país, si os pervertís y hacéis alguna escultura de cualquier representación, si hacéis lo malo a los ojos de Yahveh tu Dios hasta irritarle,
26 today I cal heaven and earth to witness against you -- you wil quickly vanish from the country whichyou are crossing the Jordan to possess. Your days will not be prolonged there, for you wil be utterly destroyed.	26 pongo hoy por testigos contra vosotros al cielo y a la tierra que desapareceréis rápidamente de esa tierra que vais a tomar en posesión al pasar el Jordán. No prolongaréis en ella vuestros días, porque seréis completamente destruidos.
27 Yahweh wil scatter you among the peoples, and only a smal number of you wil remain among thenations where Yahweh wil have driven you.	27 Yahveh os dispersará entre los pueblos y no quedaréis más que unos pocos, en medio de las naciones adonde Yahveh os lleve.
28 There you wil serve gods made by human hand, of wood and of stone, that cannot see or hear, eat orsmel .	28 Allí serviréis a dioses hechos por manos de hombre, de madera y piedra, que ni ven ni oyen, ni comen ni huelen.
29 'If, however, from there you start searching once more for Yahweh your God, and if you search for himhonestly and sincerely, you will find him.	29 Desde allí buscarás a Yahveh tu Dios; y le encontrarás si le buscas con todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma.
30 You wil suffer; everything I have said wil befal you, but in the final days you wil return to Yahwehyour God and listen to his voice.	30 Cuando estés angustiado y te alcancen todas estas palabras, al fin de los tiempos, te volverás a Yahveh tu Dios y escucharás su voz;
31 For Yahweh your God is a merciful God and wil not desert or destroy you or forget the covenantwhich he made on oath with your ancestors.	31 porque Yahveh tu Dios es un Dios misericordioso: no te abandonará ni te destruirá, y no se olvidará de la alianza que con juramento concluyó con tus padres.
32 'Put this question, then, to the ages that are past, that have gone before you, from when God createdthe human race on earth: Was there ever a word so majestic, from one end of heaven to the other? Wasanything like it ever heard?	32 Pregunta, pregunta a los tiempos antiguos, que te han precedido desde el día en que Dios creó al hombre sobre la tierra: ¿Hubo jamás desde un extremo a otro del cielo palabra tan grande como ésta? ¿Se oyó semejante?
33 Did ever a people hear the voice of the living God speaking from the heart of the fire, as you haveheard it, and remain alive?	33 ¿Hay algún pueblo que haya oído como tú has oído la voz del Dios vivo hablando de en medio del fuego, y haya sobrevivido?
34 Has it ever been known before that any god took action himself to bring one nation out of another one,by ordeals, signs, wonders, war with mighty hand and outstretched arm, by fearsome terrors -- al of which thingsYahweh your God has done for you before your eyes in Egypt?	34 ¿Algún dios intentó jamás venir a buscarse una nación de en medio de otra nación por medio de pruebas, señales, prodigios y guerra, con mano fuerte y tenso brazo, por grandes terrores, como todo lo que Yahveh vuestro Dios hizo con vosotros, a vuestros mismos ojos, en Egipto?
35 'This he showed you, so that you might know that Yahweh is the true God and that there is no other.	35 A ti se te ha dado a ver todo esto, para que sepas que Yahveh es el verdadero Dios y que no hay otro fuera de él.
36 To instruct you, he made you hear his voice from heaven, and on earth he let you see his great fire,and from the heart of the fire you heard his words.	36 Desde el cielo te ha hecho oír su voz para instruirte, y en la tierra te ha mostrado su gran fuego, y de en medio del fuego has oído sus palabras.
37 Because he loved your ancestors and, after them, chose their descendants, he has brought you out ofEgypt, displaying his presence and mighty power,	37 Porque amó a tus padres y eligió a su descendencia después de ellos, te sacó de Egipto personalmente con su gran fuerza,
38 dispossessing for you nations who were larger and stronger than you, to make way for you and to giveyou their country as your heritage, as it still is today.	38 desalojoó ante ti naciones más numerosas y fuertes que tú, te introdujo en su tierra y te la dio en herencia, como la tienes hoy.
39 'Hence, grasp this today and meditate on it careful y: Yahweh is the true God, in heaven above as onearth beneath, he and no other.	39 Reconoce, pues, hoy y medita en tu corazón que Yahveh es el único Dios allá arriba en el cielo, y aquí abajo en la tierra; no hay otro.
40 Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today, so that you and your children afteryou may prosper and live long in the country that Yahweh your God is giving you for ever.'	40 Guarda los preceptos y los mandamientos que yo te prescribo hoy, para que seas feliz, tú y tus hijos después de ti, y prolongues tus días en el suelo que Yahveh tu Dios te da para siempre.
41 Moses then set aside three towns in the east, beyond the Jordan,	41 Moisés reservó entonces tres ciudades allende el Jordán, al oriente,
42 to which any kil er might flee who had accidental y, without any previous feud, killed his fel ow; by taking refuge in one of these towns he could save his life.	42 a las que pudiera huir el homicida que hubiera matado a su prójimo sin querer, sin haberle odiado anteriormente, y huyendo a una de estas ciudades, salvara su vida.
43 These were, for the Reubenites, Bezer in the desert on the tableland; for the Gadites, Ramoth inGilead; for the Manassehites, Golan in Bashan.	43 Eran éstas, para los rubenitas, Béser, en el desierto, en la Altiplanicie; para los gaditas, Ramot en Galaad; para los manasitas, Golán en Basán.
44 This is the Law which Moses presented to the Israelites.	44 Esta es la ley que expuso Moisés a los israelitas.
45 These are the stipulations, the laws and the customs which Moses gave the Israelites after they hadleft Egypt,	45 Estos son los estatutos, preceptos y normas que dictó Moisés a los israelitas a su salida de Egipto,
46 beyond the Jordan in the val ey near Beth-Peor, in the country of Sihon the Amorite king who hadlived at Heshbon. Moses and the Israelites had defeated him when they left Egypt,	46 al otro lado del Jordán, en el valle próximo a Bet Peor, en el país de Sijón, rey de los amorreos, que habitaba en Jesbón, aquel a quien Moisés y los israelitas habían batido a su salida de Egipto,
47 and had taken possession of his country, as wel as that of Og king of Bashan -- two Amorite kings tothe east beyond the Jordan,	47 y cuyo país habían conquistado, así como el país de Og, rey de Basán, - los dos reyes amorreos del lado oriental del Jordán,
48 from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Val ey, al the way to Mount Sion (that is, Hermon) -	48 desde Aroer, que está situada al borde del valle del Arnón, hasta el monte Siryón (esto es, el Hermón) -
49 and of the whole Arabah east of the Jordan as far as the Sea of the Arabah, at the foot of the slopesof Pisgah.	49 con toda la Arabá del lado oriental del Jordán, hasta el mar de la Arabá, al pie de las laderas del Pisgá.
