Deuteronomy 4

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 'And now, Israel, listen to the laws and customs which I am teaching you today, so that, by observingthem, you may survive to enter and take possession of the country which Yahweh, God of your ancestors, isgiving you.	1 Et maintenant, Israël, écoute les lois et les coutumes que je vous enseigne aujourd'hui pourque vous les mettiez en pratique: afin que vous viviez, et que vous entriez, pour en prendre possession, dans lepays que vous donne Yahvé le Dieu de vos pères.
2 You must add nothing to what I command you, and take nothing from it, but keep the commandmentsof Yahweh your God just as I lay them down for you.	2 Vous n'ajouterez rien à ce que je vous ordonne et vous n'en retrancherez rien, mais vousgarderez les commandements de Yahvé votre Dieu tels que je vous les prescris.
3 You can see for yourselves what Yahweh has done about the Baal of Peor; Yahweh your God hasdestroyed al those of you who fol owed the Baal of Peor;	3 Vous voyez de vos yeux ce qu'a fait Yahvé à Baal-Péor: quiconque a suivi le Baal de Péor,Yahvé ton Dieu l'a exterminé du milieu de toi;
4 but those of you who stayed faithful to Yahweh your God are all alive today.	4 mais vous qui êtes restés attachés à Yahvé votre Dieu, vous êtes aujourd'hui tous vivants.
5 Look: as Yahweh my God commanded me, I have taught you laws and customs, for you to observe inthe country of which you are going to take possession.	5 Vois! comme Yahvé mon Dieu me l'a ordonné, je vous ai enseigné des lois et des coutumes,pour que vous les mettiez en pratique dans le pays dont vous allez prendre possession.
6 Keep them, put them into practice, and other peoples will admire your wisdom and prudence. Oncethey know what al these laws are, they wil exclaim, "No other people is as wise and prudent as this greatnation!"	6 Gardez-les et mettez-les en pratique, ainsi serez-vous sages et avisés aux yeux des peuples.Quand ceux-ci auront connaissance de toutes ces lois, ils s'écrieront: "Il n'y a qu'un peuple sage et avisé, c'estcette grande nation!"
7 And indeed, what great nation has its gods as near as Yahweh our God is to us whenever we cal tohim?	7 Quelle est en effet la grande nation dont les dieux se fassent aussi proches que Yahvé notreDieu l'est pour nous chaque fois que nous l'invoquons?
8 And what great nation has laws and customs as upright as the entirety of this Law which I am layingdown for you today?	8 Et quelle est la grande nation dont les lois et coutumes soient aussi justes que toute cette Loique je vous prescris aujourd'hui?
9 'But take care, as you value your lives! Do not forget the things which you yourselves have seen, or letthem slip from your heart as long as you live; teach them, rather, to your children and to your children's children.	9 Mais prends garde! Garde bien ta vie, ne va pas oublier ces choses que tes yeux ont vues, niles laisser, en aucun jour de ta vie, sortir de ton coeur; enseigne-les au contraire à tes fils et aux fils de tes fils.
10 The day you stood at Horeb in the presence of Yahweh your God, Yahweh said to me, "Summon thepeople to me; I want them to hear me speaking, so that they will learn to fear me al the days they live on earth,and teach this to their children."	10 Au jour où tu te tenais à L'Horeb en présence de Yahvé ton Dieu, Yahvé me dit: "Assemble-moi le peuple, que je leur fasse entendre mes paroles, afin qu'ils apprennent à me craindre tant qu'ils vivront surla terre, et qu'ils l'enseignent à leurs fils."
11 So you came and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain flamed to the very sky, a skydarkened by cloud, murky and thunderous.	11 Et vous vous êtes alors approchés, pour vous tenir auprès de la montagne; la montagne étaitembrasée jusqu'en plein ciel -- ciel obscurci de nuages ténébreux et retentissants!
12 Yahweh then spoke to you from the heart of the fire; you heard the sound of words but saw no shape;there was only a voice.	12 Yahvé vous parla alors du milieu du feu; vous entendiez le son des paroles, mais vousn'aperceviez aucune forme, rien qu'une voix.
13 He revealed his covenant to you and commanded you to observe it, the Ten Words which he inscribedon two tablets of stone.	13 Il vous révéla son alliance, qu'il vous ordonna de mettre en pratique, les dix paroles qu'ilinscrivit sur deux tables de pierre.
14 Yahweh then ordered me to teach you the laws and customs that you were to observe in the countryinto which you are about to cross, to take possession of it.	14 Quant à moi, Yahvé m'ordonna en ce même temps de vous enseigner les lois et les coutumesque vous auriez à mettre en pratique dans le pays où vous pénétrez pour en prendre possession.
15 'Hence, be very careful what you do. Since you saw no shape that day at Horeb when Yahweh spoketo you from the heart of the fire,	15 Prenez bien garde à vous-mêmes: puisque vous n'avez vu aucune forme, le jour où Yahvé, àl'Horeb, vous a parlé du milieu du feu,
16 see that you do not corrupt yourselves by making an image in the shape of anything whatever: be itstatue of man or of woman,	16 n'allez pas vous pervertir et vous faire une image sculptée représentant quoi que ce soit:figure d'homme ou de femme,
17 or of any animal on the earth, or of any bird that flies in the heavens,	17 figure de quelqu'une des bêtes de la terre, figure de quelqu'un des oiseaux qui volent dans leciel,
18 or of any reptile that crawls on the ground, or of any fish in the waters under the earth.	18 figure de quelqu'un des reptiles qui rampent sur le sol, figure de quelqu'un des poissons quivivent dans les eaux au-dessous de la terre.
19 When you raise your eyes to heaven, when you see the sun, the moon, the stars -- the entire array ofheaven -- do not be tempted to worship them and serve them. Yahweh your God has al otted these to al theother peoples under heaven,	19 Quand tu lèveras les yeux vers le ciel, quand tu verras le soleil, la lune, les étoiles et toutel'armée des cieux, ne va pas te laisser entraîner à te prosterner devant eux et à les servir. Yahvé ton Dieu les adonnés en partage à tous les peuples qui sont sous le ciel,
20 but Yahweh has chosen you, bringing you out of the iron-foundry, Egypt, to be his own people, hisown people as you stil are today.	20 mais vous, Yahvé vous a pris et vous a fait sortir de cette fournaise pour le fer, l'Egypte, pourque vous deveniez le peuple de son héritage, comme vous l'êtes encore aujourd'hui.
21 'Yahweh is angry with me because of you; he has sworn that I shall not cross the Jordan or enter thefine country which Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage.	21 A cause de vous, Yahvé s'est irrité contre moi; il a juré que je ne passerais pas le Jourdain etque je n'entrerais pas dans l'heureux pays qu'il te donne en héritage.
22 Yes, I am to die in this country; I shal not cross this Jordan; you wil go over and take possession ofthat rich land.	22 Oui, je vais mourir en ce pays-ci et je ne passerai pas ce Jourdain. Mais vous, vous allez lepasser et prendre possession de cet heureux pays.
23 Be careful not to forget the covenant which Yahweh your God has made with you, by sculpting animage or making a statue of anything, since Yahweh your God has forbidden this;	23 Gardez-vous d'oublier l'alliance que Yahvé votre Dieu a conclue avec vous et de vousfabriquer une image sculptée de quoi que ce soit, malgré la défense de Yahvé ton Dieu;
24 for Yahweh your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.	24 car Yahvé ton Dieu est un feu dévorant, un Dieu jaloux.
25 'When you have fathered children and grandchildren and have grown old in the country, when youhave grown corrupt and made some image, doing what Yahweh regards as wrong and so provoking his anger-	25 Lorsque tu auras engendré des enfants et des petits-enfants et que vous aurez vieilli dans lepays, quand vous vous serez pervertis, que vous aurez fabriqué quelque image sculptée, fait ce qui est mal auxyeux de Yahvé ton Dieu de manière à l'irriter,
26 today I cal heaven and earth to witness against you -- you wil quickly vanish from the country whichyou are crossing the Jordan to possess. Your days will not be prolonged there, for you wil be utterly destroyed.	26 je prends aujourd'hui à témoin contre vous les cieux et la terre: vous devrez promptementdisparaître de ce pays dont vous allez prendre possession en passant le Jourdain. Vous n'y prolongerez pas vosjours, car vous serez bel et bien anéantis.
27 Yahweh wil scatter you among the peoples, and only a smal number of you wil remain among thenations where Yahweh wil have driven you.	27 Yahvé vous dispersera parmi les peuples, et il ne restera de vous qu'un petit nombre, aumilieu des nations où Yahvé vous aura conduits.
28 There you wil serve gods made by human hand, of wood and of stone, that cannot see or hear, eat orsmel .	28 Vous y servirez des dieux faits de main d'homme, du bois et de la pierre incapables de voir etd'entendre, de manger et de sentir.
29 'If, however, from there you start searching once more for Yahweh your God, and if you search for himhonestly and sincerely, you will find him.	29 De là-bas, tu rechercheras Yahvé ton Dieu, et tu le trouveras si tu le cherches de tout toncoeur et de toute ton âme.
30 You wil suffer; everything I have said wil befal you, but in the final days you wil return to Yahwehyour God and listen to his voice.	30 Dans ta détresse, toutes ces paroles t'atteindront, mais à la fin des temps tu reviendras àYahvé ton Dieu et tu écouteras sa voix;
31 For Yahweh your God is a merciful God and wil not desert or destroy you or forget the covenantwhich he made on oath with your ancestors.	31 car Yahvé ton Dieu est un Dieu miséricordieux qui ne t'abandonnera ni ne te détruira, et quin'oubliera pas l'alliance qu'il a conclue par serment avec tes pères.
32 'Put this question, then, to the ages that are past, that have gone before you, from when God createdthe human race on earth: Was there ever a word so majestic, from one end of heaven to the other? Wasanything like it ever heard?	32 Interroge donc les anciens âges, qui t'ont précédé depuis le jour où Dieu créa l'homme sur laterre: d'un bout du ciel à l'autre y eut-il jamais si auguste parole? En entendit-on de semblable?
33 Did ever a people hear the voice of the living God speaking from the heart of the fire, as you haveheard it, and remain alive?	33 Est-il un peuple qui ait entendu la voix du Dieu vivant parlant du milieu du feu, comme tul'as entendue, et soit demeuré en vie?
34 Has it ever been known before that any god took action himself to bring one nation out of another one,by ordeals, signs, wonders, war with mighty hand and outstretched arm, by fearsome terrors -- al of which thingsYahweh your God has done for you before your eyes in Egypt?	34 Est-il un dieu qui soit venu se chercher une nation au milieu d'une autre, par des épreuves,des signes, des prodiges et des combats, à main forte et à bras étendu, et par de grandes terreurs -- toutes chosesque pour vous, sous tes yeux, Yahvé votre Dieu a faites en Egypte?
35 'This he showed you, so that you might know that Yahweh is the true God and that there is no other.	35 C'est à toi qu'il a donné de voir tout cela, pour que tu saches que Yahvé est le vrai Dieu etqu'il n'y en a pas d'autre.
36 To instruct you, he made you hear his voice from heaven, and on earth he let you see his great fire,and from the heart of the fire you heard his words.	36 Du ciel il t'a fait entendre sa voix pour t'instruire, et sur la terre il t'a fait voir son grand feu,et du milieu du feu tu as entendu ses paroles.
37 Because he loved your ancestors and, after them, chose their descendants, he has brought you out ofEgypt, displaying his presence and mighty power,	37 Parce qu'il a aimé tes pères et qu'après eux il a élu leur postérité, il t'a fait sortir d'Egypte enmanifestant sa présence et sa grande force,
38 dispossessing for you nations who were larger and stronger than you, to make way for you and to giveyou their country as your heritage, as it still is today.	38 il a dépossédé devant toi des nations plus grandes et plus puissantes que toi, il t'a fait entrerdans leur pays et te l'a donné en héritage, comme il le reste encore aujourd'hui.
39 'Hence, grasp this today and meditate on it careful y: Yahweh is the true God, in heaven above as onearth beneath, he and no other.	39 Sache-le donc aujourd'hui et médite-le dans ton coeur: c'est Yahvé qui est Dieu, là-haut dansle ciel comme ici-bas sur la terre, lui et nul autre.
40 Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today, so that you and your children afteryou may prosper and live long in the country that Yahweh your God is giving you for ever.'	40 Garde ses lois et ses commandements que je te prescris aujourd'hui, afin d'avoir, toi et tes filsaprès toi, bonheur et longue vie sur la terre que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne pour toujours.
41 Moses then set aside three towns in the east, beyond the Jordan,	41 Moïse choisit alors trois villes au-delà du Jourdain, à l'orient,
42 to which any kil er might flee who had accidental y, without any previous feud, killed his fel ow; by taking refuge in one of these towns he could save his life.	42 où pourrait s'enfuir le meurtrier qui aurait tué son prochain involontairement, sans avoir eucontre lui de haine invétérée: il pourrait, s'enfuyant dans une de ces villes, sauver sa vie.
43 These were, for the Reubenites, Bezer in the desert on the tableland; for the Gadites, Ramoth inGilead; for the Manassehites, Golan in Bashan.	43 C'étaient, pour les Rubénites, Béçèr, dans le désert, sur le Haut-Plateau; pour les Gadites,Ramot en Galaad; pour les Manassites, Golân en Bashân.
44 This is the Law which Moses presented to the Israelites.	44 Voici la Loi que Moïse présenta aux Israélites.
45 These are the stipulations, the laws and the customs which Moses gave the Israelites after they hadleft Egypt,	45 Voici les stipulations, les lois et les coutumes que Moïse donna aux Israélites à leur sortied'Egypte,
46 beyond the Jordan in the val ey near Beth-Peor, in the country of Sihon the Amorite king who hadlived at Heshbon. Moses and the Israelites had defeated him when they left Egypt,	46 au-delà du Jourdain, dans la vallée proche de Bet-Péor, au pays de Sihôn, roi amoriterésidant à Heshbôn. Moïse et les Israélites l'avaient battu à leur sortie d'Egypte
47 and had taken possession of his country, as wel as that of Og king of Bashan -- two Amorite kings tothe east beyond the Jordan,	47 et s'étaient emparés de son pays, ainsi que du pays d'Og, roi du Bashân, -- tous deux roisamorites au-delà du Jourdain à l'orient,
48 from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Val ey, al the way to Mount Sion (that is, Hermon) -	48 depuis Aroër qui est sur le bord de la vallée de l'Arnon jusqu'au mont Siôn (c'est l'Hermon) --
49 and of the whole Arabah east of the Jordan as far as the Sea of the Arabah, at the foot of the slopesof Pisgah.	49 et de toute la Araba au-delà du Jourdain à l'orient, jusqu'à la mer de la Araba, au pied despentes du Pisga.
