NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Moses went and spoke to all Israel as follows,1 Abiit itaque Moyses, et locutus est omnia verba hæc ad universum Israël,
'Today, I am one hundred and twenty years old, and can no longer act as leader. Yahweh has toldme, "You shal not cross this Jordan."2 et dixit ad eos : Centum viginti annorum sum hodie ; non possum ultra egredi et ingredi, præsertim cum et Dominus dixerit mihi : Non transibis Jordanem istum.
Yahweh your God himself will lead you across, he himself wil destroy and dispossess these nationsconfronting you; Joshua too wil lead you across, as Yahweh has said.3 Dominus ergo Deus tuus transibit ante te : ipse delebit omnes gentes has in conspectu tuo, et possidebis eas : et Josue iste transibit ante te, sicut locutus est Dominus.
Yahweh wil treat them as he has treated Sihon and Og the Amorite kings and their country -- hedestroyed them.4 Facietque Dominus eis sicut fecit Sehon et Og regibus Amorrhæorum, et terræ eorum, delebitque eos.
Yahweh wil put them at your mercy, and you wil deal with them exactly as prescribed by thecommandments which I have laid down for you.5 Cum ergo et hos tradiderit vobis, similiter facietis eis, sicut præcepi vobis.
Be strong, stand firm, have no fear, do not be afraid of them, for Yahweh your God is going with you;he wil not fail you or desert you.'6 Viriliter agite, et confortamini : nolite timere, nec paveatis ad conspectum eorum : quia Dominus Deus tuus ipse est ductor tuus, et non dimittet, nec derelinquet te.
Moses then summoned Joshua and, in the presence of al Israel, said to him, 'Be strong, stand firm;you wil be the one to go with this people into the country which Yahweh has sworn to their ancestors that hewould give them; you are to be the one who puts them into possession of it.7 Vocavitque Moyses Josue, et dixit ei coram omni Israël : Confortare, et esto robustus : tu enim introduces populum istum in terram, quam daturum se patribus eorum juravit Dominus, et tu eam sorte divides.
Yahweh himself will lead you; he wil be with you; he will not fail you or desert you. Have no fear, donot be alarmed.'8 Et Dominus qui ductor est vester, ipse erit tecum : non dimittet, nec derelinquet te : noli timere, nec paveas.
Moses committed this Law to writing and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who carried the ark ofYahweh's covenant, and to al the elders of Israel.9 Scripsit itaque Moyses legem hanc, et tradidit eam sacerdotibus filiis Levi, qui portabant arcam fœderis Domini, et cunctis senioribus Israël.
And Moses gave them this command, 'At the end of every seven years, at the time fixed for the yearof remission, at the feast of Shelters,10 Præcepitque eis, dicens : Post septem annos, anno remissionis, in solemnitate tabernaculorum,
when all Israel assembles in the presence of Yahweh your God in the place chosen by him, you mustproclaim this Law in the hearing of al Israel.11 convenientibus cunctis ex Israël, ut appareant in conspectu Domini Dei tui in loco quem elegerit Dominus, leges verba legis hujus coram omni Israël, audientibus eis,
Cal the people together, men, women, children, and the foreigner residing with you, so that, hearingit, they may learn to fear Yahweh your God and keep and observe al the words of this Law.12 et in unum omni populo congregato, tam viris quam mulieribus, parvulis, et advenis, qui sunt intra portas tuas : ut audientes discant, et timeant Dominum Deum vestrum, et custodiant, impleantque omnes sermones legis hujus.
Their children, who as yet do not know it, wil hear it and learn to fear Yahweh your God, all the timeyou live in the country which you are crossing the Jordan to possess.'13 Filii quoque eorum qui nunc ignorant, ut audire possint, et timeant Dominum Deum suum cunctis diebus quibus versantur in terra, ad quam vos, Jordane transmisso, pergitis obtinendam.
Yahweh said to Moses, 'And now the time is near when you must die. Summon Joshua and takeyour places at the Tent of Meeting, so that I can give him his orders.' Moses and Joshua went and took theirplaces at the Tent of Meeting,14 Et ait Dominus ad Moysen : Ecce prope sunt dies mortis tuæ : voca Josue, et state in tabernaculo testimonii, ut præcipiam ei. Abierunt ergo Moyses et Josue, et steterunt in tabernaculo testimonii :
and Yahweh showed himself at the Tent in a pil ar of cloud; the pil ar of cloud stood at the door of theTent.15 apparuitque Dominus ibi in columna nubis, quæ stetit in introitu tabernaculi.
Yahweh said to Moses, 'You will soon be sleeping with your ancestors, and this people is about toplay the harlot by fol owing the gods of the foreigners of the country, among whom they are going to live. Theywil desert me and break my covenant, which I have made with them.16 Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen : Ecce tu dormies cum patribus tuis, et populus iste consurgens fornicabitur post deos alienos in terra, ad quam ingreditur ut habitet in ea : ibi derelinquet me, et irritum faciet fœdus, quod pepigi cum eo.
That very day, my anger wil blaze against them; I shal desert them and hide my face from them. Ahost of disasters and misfortunes will overtake them to devour them, and when that day comes they wil say, "Ifsuch disasters overtake me, surely Yahweh my God cannot be with me?"17 Et irascetur furor meus contra eum in die illo : et derelinquam eum, et abscondam faciem meam ab eo, et erit in devorationem : invenient eum omnia mala et afflictiones, ita ut dicat in illo die : Vere quia non est Deus mecum, invenerunt me hæc mala.
Yes indeed, I shall hide my face that day, on account of al the evil which they wil have done byturning to other gods.18 Ego autem abscondam, et celabo faciem meam in die illo propter omnia mala, quæ fecit, quia secutus est deos alienos.
'Now write down this song for you to use; teach it to the Israelites, put it into their mouths, for it to bea witness on my behalf against the Israelites:19 Nunc itaque scribite vobis canticum istud, et docete filios Israël : ut memoriter teneant, et ore decantent, et sit mihi carmen istud pro testimonio inter filios Israël.
against Israel, whom I am bringing into the country which I swore to his ancestors that I would givehim, a country flowing with milk and honey: against Israel, who wil eat to his heart's content and grow fat, andwil then turn to other gods and serve them, despising me and breaking my covenant.20 Introducam enim eum in terram, pro qua juravi patribus ejus, lacte et melle manantem. Cumque comederint, et saturati, crassique fuerint, avertentur ad deos alienos, et servient eis : detrahentque mihi, et irritum facient pactum meum.
When a host of disasters and misfortunes overtakes him, this song, like a witness, wil give evidenceagainst him, since his descendants wil not have forgotten it. Yes, even today, before I have brought him to thecountry which I have promised him on oath, I know what plans he has in mind.'21 Postquam invenerint eum mala multa et afflictiones, respondebit ei canticum istud pro testimonio, quod nulla delebit oblivio ex ore seminis sui. Scio enim cogitationes ejus, quæ facturus sit hodie, antequam introducam eum in terram, quam ei pollicitus sum.
So, that day, Moses wrote out this song and taught it to the Israelites.22 Scripsit ergo Moyses canticum, et docuit filios Israël.
To Joshua son of Nun, Yahweh gave this order, 'Be strong and stand firm, for you are to be the oneto bring the Israelites into the country which I have promised them on oath, and I myself shall be with you.'23 Præcepitque Dominus Josue filio Nun, et ait : Confortare, et esto robustus : tu enim introduces filios Israël in terram, quam pollicitus sum, et ego ero tecum.
When Moses had completely finished writing the words of this Law in a book,24 Postquam ergo scripsit Moyses verba legis hujus in volumine, atque complevit,
he gave this command to the Levites who carried the ark of Yahweh's covenant:25 præcepit Levitis, qui portabant arcam fœderis Domini, dicens :
'Take the book of this Law and put it beside the ark of the covenant of Yahweh your God. Let it liethere as evidence against you.26 Tollite librum istum, et ponite eum in latere arcæ fœderis Domini Dei vestri : ut sit ibi contra te in testimonium.
For I know how rebel ious and stiff-necked you are. If today, while I am stil alive and with you, yourebel against Yahweh, how much more wil you rebel against him after my death!27 Ego enim scio contentionem tuam, et cervicem tuam durissimam. Adhuc vivente me et ingrediente vobiscum, semper contentiose egistis contra Dominum : quanto magis cum mortuus fuero ?
'Gather al your tribal elders and scribes round me, so that I may be sure that they hear these words,as I cal heaven and earth to witness against them.28 Congregate ad me omnes majores natu per tribus vestras, atque doctores, et loquar audientibus eis sermones istos, et invocabo contra eos cælum et terram.
For I know that after my death you are certain to grow corrupt; you wil leave the way which I havemarked out for you; in the final days disaster wil befal you for having done what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, forhaving provoked his anger by your behaviour.'29 Novi enim quod post mortem meam inique agetis, et declinabitis cito de via, quam præcepi vobis : et occurrent vobis mala in extremo tempore, quando feceritis malum in conspectu Domini, ut irritetis eum per opera manuum vestrarum.
In the hearing of the whole assembly of Israel, Moses then recited the words of this song to the end:30 Locutus est ergo Moyses, audiente universo cœtu Israël, verba carminis hujus, et ad finem usque complevit.
