NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Paul, cal ed by the wil of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and Sosthenes, our brother,1 Paulus, vocatus apostolus Christi Iesu per voluntatem Dei, et Sosthenesfrater
to the church of God in Corinth, to those who have been consecrated in Christ Jesus and cal ed to beGod's holy people, with al those everywhere who cal on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord as wel asours.2 ecclesiae Dei, quae est Corinthi, sanctificatis in Christo Iesu,vocatis sanctis cum omnibus, qui invocant nomen Domini nostri Iesu Christi inomni loco ipsorum et nostro:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.3 gratia vobis et pax a Deo Patre nostro et DominoIesu Christo.
I am continual y thanking God about you, for the grace of God which you have been given in ChristJesus;4 Gratias ago Deo meo semper pro vobis in gratia Dei, quae data est vobis inChristo Iesu,
in him you have been richly endowed in every kind of utterance and knowledge;5 quia in omnibus divites facti estis in illo, in omni verbo et inomni scientia,
so firmly has witness to Christ taken root in you.6 sicut testimonium Christi confirmatum est in vobis,
And so you are not lacking in any gift as you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed;7 ita utnihil vobis desit in ulla donatione, exspectantibus revelationem Domini nostriIesu Christi;
he will continue to give you strength till the very end, so that you will be irreproachable on the Day ofour Lord Jesus Christ.8 qui et confirmabit vos usque ad finem sine crimine in die Domininostri Iesu Christi.
You can rely on God, who has called you to be partners with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.9 Fidelis Deus, per quem vocati estis in communionem Filiieius Iesu Christi Domini nostri.
Brothers, I urge you, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, not to have factions among yourselves butal to be in agreement in what you profess; so that you are perfectly united in your beliefs and judgements.10 Obsecro autem vos, fratres, per nomen Domini nostri Iesu Christi, ut idipsumdicatis omnes, et non sint in vobis schismata, sitis autem perfecti in eodemsensu et in eadem sententia.
From what Chloe's people have been telling me about you, brothers, it is clear that there are seriousdifferences among you.11 Significatum est enim mihi de vobis, fratresmei, ab his, qui sunt Chloes, quia contentiones inter vos sunt.
What I mean is this: every one of you is declaring, 'I belong to Paul,' or 'I belong to Apollos,' or 'Ibelong to Cephas,' or 'I belong to Christ.'12 Hoc autemdico, quod unusquisque vestrum dicit: “ Ego quidem sum Pauli ”, “ Egoautem Apollo ”, “ Ego vero Cephae ”, “ Ego autem Christi ”.
Has Christ been split up? Was it Paul that was crucified for you, or was it in Paul's name that you werebaptised?13 Divisus est Christus? Numquid Paulus crucifixus est pro vobis, aut in nominePauli baptizati estis?
I am thankful I did not baptise any of you, except Crispus and Gaius,14 Gratias ago Deo quod neminem vestrum baptizavi, nisiCrispum et Gaium,
so that no one can say that you were baptised in my name.15 ne quis dicat quod in nomine meo baptizati sitis.
Yes, I did baptise the family of Stephanas, too; but besides these I do not think I baptised anyone.16 Baptizavi autem et Stephanae domum; ceterum nescio si quem alium baptizaverim.
After al , Christ sent me not to baptise, but to preach the gospel; and not by means of wisdom oflanguage, wise words which would make the cross of Christ pointless.17 Non enim misit me Christus baptizare, sed evangelizare; non in sapientiaverbi, ut non evacuetur crux Christi.
The message of the cross is fol y for those who are on the way to ruin, but for those of us who are onthe road to salvation it is the power of God.18 Verbum enim crucis pereuntibus quidem stultitia est; his autem, qui salvifiunt, id est nobis, virtus Dei est.
As scripture says: I am going to destroy the wisdom of the wise and bring to nothing theunderstanding of any who understand.19 Scriptum est enim:
“ Perdam sapientiam sapientium
et prudentiam prudentium reprobabo ”.
Where are the philosophers? Where are the experts? And where are the debaters of this age? Do younot see how God has shown up human wisdom as fol y?20 Ubi sapiens? Ubi scriba? Ubi conquisitor huius saeculi? Nonne stultam fecitDeus sapientiam huius mundi?
Since in the wisdom of God the world was unable to recognise God through wisdom, it was God's ownpleasure to save believers through the fol y of the gospel.21 Nam quia in Dei sapientia non cognovit mundusper sapientiam Deum, placuit Deo per stultitiam praedicationis salvos facerecredentes.
While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks look for wisdom,22 Quoniam et Iudaei signa petunt, et Graeci sapientiam quaerunt,
we are preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews an obstacle they cannot get over, to the gentilesfoolishness,23 nos autem praedicamus Christum crucifixum, Iudaeis quidem scandalum, gentibusautem stultitiam;
but to those who have been cal ed, whether they are Jews or Greeks, a Christ who is both the powerof God and the wisdom of God.24 ipsis autem vocatis, Iudaeis atque Graecis, Christum Deivirtutem et Dei sapientiam;
God's fol y is wiser than human wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than human strength.25 quia quod stultum est Dei, sapientius esthominibus, et, quod infirmum est Dei, fortius est hominibus.
Consider, brothers, how you were cal ed; not many of you are wise by human standards, not manyinfluential, not many from noble families.26 Videte enim vocationem vestram, fratres; quia non multi sapientes secundumcarnem, non multi potentes, non multi nobiles;
No, God chose those who by human standards are fools to shame the wise; he chose those who byhuman standards are weak to shame the strong,27 sed, quae stulta sunt mundi,elegit Deus, ut confundat sapientes, et infirma mundi elegit Deus, ut confundatfortia,
those who by human standards are common and contemptible -- indeed those who count for nothing-- to reduce to nothing al those that do count for something,28 et ignobilia mundi et contemptibilia elegit Deus, quae non sunt, utea, quae sunt, destrueret,
so that no human being might feel boastful before God.29 ut non glorietur omnis caro in conspectu Dei.
It is by him that you exist in Christ Jesus, who for us was made wisdom from God, and saving justiceand holiness and redemption.30 Ex ipso autem vos estis in Christo Iesu, qui factus est sapientia nobis a Deo etiustitia et sanctificatio et redemptio,
As scripture says: If anyone wants to boast, let him boast of the Lord.31 ut quemadmodum scriptum est:
“ Qui gloriatur, in Domino glorietur ”.
