Luke 14

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Now it happened that on a Sabbath day he had gone to share a meal in the house of one of theleading Pharisees; and they watched him closely.	1 Et il advint, comme il était venu un sabbat chez l'un des chefs des Pharisiens pour prendre un repas,qu'eux étaient à l'observer.
2 Now there in front of him was a man with dropsy,	2 Et voici qu'un hydropique se trouvait devant lui.
3 and Jesus addressed the lawyers and Pharisees with the words, 'Is it against the law to cure someoneon the Sabbath, or not?'	3 Prenant la parole, Jésus dit aux légistes et aux Pharisiens: "Est-il permis, le sabbat, de guérir, ou non?"
4 But they remained silent, so he took the man and cured him and sent him away.	4 Et eux se tinrent cois. Prenant alors le malade, il le guérit et le renvoya.
5 Then he said to them, 'Which of you here, if his son fal s into a wel , or his ox, wil not pul him out on aSabbath day without any hesitation?'	5 Puis il leur dit: "Lequel d'entre vous, si son fils ou son boeuf vient à tomber dans un puits, ne l'en tireraaussitôt, le jour du sabbat?"
6 And to this they could find no answer.	6 Et ils ne purent rien répondre à cela.
7 He then told the guests a parable, because he had noticed how they picked the places of honour. Hesaid this,	7 Il disait ensuite une parabole à l'adresse des invités, remarquant comment ils choisissaient les premiersdivans; il leur disait:
8 'When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take your seat in the place of honour. A moredistinguished person than you may have been invited,	8 "Lorsque quelqu'un t'invite à un repas de noces, ne va pas t'étendre sur le premier divan, de peur qu'unplus digne que toi n'ait été invité par ton hôte,
9 and the person who invited you both may come and say, "Give up your place to this man." And then, toyour embarrassment, you wil have to go and take the lowest place.	9 et que celui qui vous a invités, toi et lui, ne vienne te dire: Cède-lui la place. Et alors tu devrais, pleinde confusion, aller occuper la dernière place.
10 No; when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there, so that, when your hostcomes, he may say, "My friend, move up higher." Then, everyone with you at the table wil see you honoured.	10 Au contraire, lorsque tu es invité, va te mettre à la dernière place, de façon qu'à son arrivée celui quit'a invité te dise: Mon ami, monte plus haut. Alors il y aura pour toi de l'honneur devant tous les autres convives.
11 For everyone who raises himself up wil be humbled, and the one who humbles himself wil be raisedup.'	11 Car quiconque s'élève sera abaissé, et celui qui s'abaisse sera élevé."
12 Then he said to his host, 'When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or yourbrothers or your relations or rich neighbours, in case they invite you back and so repay you.	12 Puis il disait à celui qui l'avait invité: "Lorsque tu donnes un déjeuner ou un dîner, ne convie ni tesamis, ni tes frères, ni tes parents, ni de riches voisins, de peur qu'eux aussi ne t'invitent à leur tour et qu'on ne terende la pareille.
13 No; when you have a party, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;	13 Mais lorsque tu donnes un festin, invite des pauvres, des estropiés, des boiteux, des aveugles;
14 then you will be blessed, for they have no means to repay you and so you wil be repaid when theupright rise again.'	14 heureux seras-tu alors de ce qu'ils n'ont pas de quoi te le rendre! Car cela te sera rendu lors de larésurrection des justes."
15 On hearing this, one of those gathered round the table said to him, 'Blessed is anyone who wil sharethe meal in the kingdom of God!'	15 A ces mots, l'un des convives lui dit: "Heureux celui qui prendra son repas dans le Royaume deDieu!"
16 But he said to him, 'There was a man who gave a great banquet, and he invited a large number ofpeople.	16 Il lui dit: "Un homme faisait un grand dîner, auquel il invite beaucoup de monde.
17 When the time for the banquet came, he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited,"Come along: everything is ready now."	17 A l'heure du dîner, il envoya son serviteur dire aux invités: Venez; maintenant tout est prêt.
18 But al alike started to make excuses. The first said, "I have bought a piece of land and must go andsee it. Please accept my apologies."	18 Et tous, comme de concert, se mirent à s'excuser. Le premier lui dit: J'ai acheté un champ et il mefaut aller le voir; je t'en prie, tiens-moi pour excusé.
19 Another said, "I have bought five yoke of oxen and am on my way to try them out. Please accept myapologies."	19 Un autre dit: J'ai acheté cinq paires de boeufs et je pars les essayer; je t'en prie, tiens-moi pourexcusé.
20 Yet another said, "I have just got married and so am unable to come."	20 Un autre dit: Je viens de me marier, et c'est pourquoi je ne puis venir.
21 'The servant returned and reported this to his master. Then the householder, in a rage, said to hisservant, "Go out quickly into the streets and al eys of the town and bring in here the poor, the crippled, the blindand the lame."	21 "A son retour, le serviteur rapporta cela à son maître. Alors, pris de colère, le maître de maison dit àson serviteur: Va-t-en vite par les places et les rues de la ville, et introduis ici les pauvres, les estropiés, lesaveugles et les boiteux. --
22 "Sir," said the servant, "your orders have been carried out and there is still room."	22 Maître, dit le serviteur, tes ordres sont exécutés, et il y a encore de la place.
23 Then the master said to his servant, "Go to the open roads and the hedgerows and press people tocome in, to make sure my house is ful ;	23 Et le maître dit au serviteur: Va-t-en par les chemins et le long des clôtures, et fais entrer les gens deforce, afin que ma maison se remplisse.
24 because, I tel you, not one of those who were invited shal have a taste of my banquet." '	24 Car, je vous le dis, aucun de ces hommes qui avaient été invités ne goûtera de mon dîner."
25 Great crowds accompanied him on his way and he turned and spoke to them.	25 Des foules nombreuses faisaient route avec lui, et se retournant il leur dit:
26 'Anyone who comes to me without hating father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes and hisown life too, cannot be my disciple.	26 "Si quelqu'un vient à moi sans haïr son père, sa mère, sa femme, ses enfants, ses frères, ses soeurs, etjusqu'à sa propre vie, il ne peut être mon disciple.
27 No one who does not carry his cross and come after me can be my disciple.	27 Quiconque ne porte pas sa croix et ne vient pas derrière moi ne peut être mon disciple.
28 'And indeed, which of you here, intending to build a tower, would not first sit down and work out thecost to see if he had enough to complete it?	28 "Qui de vous en effet, s'il veut bâtir une tour, ne commence par s'asseoir pour calculer la dépense etvoir s'il a de quoi aller jusqu'au bout?
29 Otherwise, if he laid the foundation and then found himself unable to finish the work, anyone who saw it would start making fun of him and saying,	29 De peur que, s'il pose les fondations et ne peut achever, tous ceux qui le verront ne se mettent à semoquer de lui, en disant:
30 "Here is someone who started to build and was unable to finish."	30 Voilà un homme qui a commencé de bâtir et il n'a pu achever!
31 Or again, what king marching to war against another king would not first sit down and considerwhether with ten thousand men he could stand up to the other who was advancing against him with twentythousand?	31 Ou encore quel est le roi qui, partant faire la guerre à un autre roi, ne commencera par s'asseoir pourexaminer s'il est capable, avec 10.000 hommes, de se porter à la rencontre de celui qui marche contre lui avec20.000?
32 If not, then while the other king was still a long way off, he would send envoys to sue for peace.	32 Sinon, alors que l'autre est encore loin, il lui envoie une ambassade pour demander la paix.
33 So in the same way, none of you can be my disciple without giving up al that he owns.	33 Ainsi donc, quiconque parmi vous ne renonce pas à tous ses biens ne peut être mon disciple.
34 'Salt is a good thing. But if salt itself loses its taste, what can make it salty again?	34 "C'est donc une bonne chose que le sel. Mais si même le sel vient à s'affadir, avec quoil'assaisonnera-t-on?
35 It is good for neither soil nor manure heap. People throw it away. Anyone who has ears for listeningshould listen!'	35 Il n'est bon ni pour la terre ni pour le fumier: on le jette dehors. Celui qui a des oreilles pour entendre,qu'il entende!"
