1 Now it happened that on a Sabbath day he had gone to share a meal in the house of one of theleading Pharisees; and they watched him closely.	1 Un jour de sabbat Jésus se rendit chez un personnage important des Pharisiens pour y prendre le repas; tous étaient là et l’observaient.
2 Now there in front of him was a man with dropsy,	2 Or il y avait là devant lui un homme atteint d’hydropisie.
3 and Jesus addressed the lawyers and Pharisees with the words, 'Is it against the law to cure someoneon the Sabbath, or not?'	3 Jésus pose alors la question aux maîtres de la Loi et aux Pharisiens: "Oui ou non, est-il permis de guérir un jour de sabbat?”
4 But they remained silent, so he took the man and cured him and sent him away.	4 Ils gardent le silence. Jésus prend donc soin de l’infirme, le guérit et le renvoie.
5 Then he said to them, 'Which of you here, if his son fal s into a wel , or his ox, wil not pul him out on aSabbath day without any hesitation?'	5 Puis il leur dit: "Si votre fils ou votre bœuf tombe dans un puits un jour de sabbat, lequel d’entre vous ne l’en retirera pas aussitôt?”
6 And to this they could find no answer.	6 Et à cela ils n’avaient rien à répondre.
7 He then told the guests a parable, because he had noticed how they picked the places of honour. Hesaid this,	7 Jésus avait vu comment les invités cherchaient les premières places. Il dit à leur adresse:
8 'When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take your seat in the place of honour. A moredistinguished person than you may have been invited,	8 "Lorsque quelqu’un t’invite à des noces, ne te précipite pas à la première place, car il a peut-être invité quelqu’un de plus important que toi.
9 and the person who invited you both may come and say, "Give up your place to this man." And then, toyour embarrassment, you wil have to go and take the lowest place.	9 Imagine que celui qui vous a invités tous les deux vienne te dire: ‘Cède-lui la place’. Tu devrais alors te glisser tout honteux à la dernière place.
10 No; when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there, so that, when your hostcomes, he may say, "My friend, move up higher." Then, everyone with you at the table wil see you honoured.	10 “Si l’on t’invite, va te mettre à la dernière place; lorsque celui qui t’a invité fera son tour, il te dira: ‘Mon ami, avance plus haut!’ Et ce sera un honneur pour toi devant tous les invités.
11 For everyone who raises himself up wil be humbled, and the one who humbles himself wil be raisedup.'	11 “Car celui qui s’élève sera abaissé, et celui qui s’abaisse sera élevé.”
12 Then he said to his host, 'When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or yourbrothers or your relations or rich neighbours, in case they invite you back and so repay you.	12 Jésus dit encore à celui qui l’avait invité: "Lorsque tu prépares un déjeuner ou un dîner, n’invite pas tes amis, ni tes frères, ni tes proches, ni de riches voisins; ils t’inviteraient à leur tour et tu aurais là ta récompense.
13 No; when you have a party, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;	13 “Mais quand tu organises un festin, invite les pauvres, les estropiés, les boiteux et les aveugles.
14 then you will be blessed, for they have no means to repay you and so you wil be repaid when theupright rise again.'	14 Heureux seras-tu s’ils n’ont pas les moyens de te le rendre, car on te le rendra lors de la résurrection des justes.”
15 On hearing this, one of those gathered round the table said to him, 'Blessed is anyone who wil sharethe meal in the kingdom of God!'	15 En entendant parler Jésus, un des convives lui dit: "Heureux celui qui prendra part au banquet dans le Royaume de Dieu!”
16 But he said to him, 'There was a man who gave a great banquet, and he invited a large number ofpeople.	16 Jésus lui répondit: "Un homme avait préparé un grand dîner, avec beaucoup d’invités.
17 When the time for the banquet came, he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited,"Come along: everything is ready now."	17 Quand vint l’heure du dîner, il envoya son serviteur pour dire aux invités: ‘Venez, tout est prêt!’
18 But al alike started to make excuses. The first said, "I have bought a piece of land and must go andsee it. Please accept my apologies."	18 Mais tous, comme un seul homme, commencèrent à s’excuser. Le premier lui fait dire: ‘J’ai acheté un champ, il faut absolument que j’aille le voir. Tu voudras bien m’excuser.’
19 Another said, "I have bought five yoke of oxen and am on my way to try them out. Please accept myapologies."	19 Un autre dit: ‘J’ai acheté cinq paires de bœufs et je pars les essayer. Tu voudras bien m’excuser.’
20 Yet another said, "I have just got married and so am unable to come."	20 Un autre encore dit: ‘Je viens de me marier, c’est pourquoi je ne viens pas.’
21 'The servant returned and reported this to his master. Then the householder, in a rage, said to hisservant, "Go out quickly into the streets and al eys of the town and bring in here the poor, the crippled, the blindand the lame."	21 “Le serviteur revint et fit le rapport à son maître. Alors le maître de maison se mit en colère et dit à son serviteur: ‘Va tout de suite sur les places, parcours les rues de la ville; tu amèneras ici les pauvres, les estropiés, les aveugles et les boiteux.’
22 "Sir," said the servant, "your orders have been carried out and there is still room."	22 “Le serviteur revint lui dire: ‘Seigneur, on a fait ce que tu as commandé, mais il y a encore de la place.’
23 Then the master said to his servant, "Go to the open roads and the hedgerows and press people tocome in, to make sure my house is ful ;	23 Le maître dit au serviteur: ‘Va voir aux sorties de la ville, du côté des baraquements, et oblige les gens à entrer pour que ma maison soit pleine.
24 because, I tel you, not one of those who were invited shal have a taste of my banquet." '	24 Mais ces messieurs que j’avais invités, je vous dis que pas un d’eux ne goûtera de mon festin.’ ”
25 Great crowds accompanied him on his way and he turned and spoke to them.	25 Comme une foule nombreuse faisait route avec Jésus, il se tourna vers eux pour leur dire:
26 'Anyone who comes to me without hating father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes and hisown life too, cannot be my disciple.	26 "Si quelqu’un vient à moi sans se détacher de son père, de sa mère, de sa femme, ses enfants, ses frères, ses sœurs, et même de sa propre personne, il ne peut pas être mon disciple.
27 No one who does not carry his cross and come after me can be my disciple.	27 Celui qui ne marche pas à ma suite en portant sa croix ne peut pas être mon disciple.
28 'And indeed, which of you here, intending to build a tower, would not first sit down and work out thecost to see if he had enough to complete it?	28 “Si l’un d’entre vous pense à se bâtir une tour, ne va-t-il pas d’abord s’asseoir pour calculer la dépense et voir s’il ira jusqu’au bout?
29 Otherwise, if he laid the foundation and then found himself unable to finish the work, anyone who saw it would start making fun of him and saying,	29 Car s’il pose les fondations et n’est pas capable de terminer, tous ceux qui le verront se moqueront de lui:
30 "Here is someone who started to build and was unable to finish."	30 ‘Il a commencé à bâtir et il n’a pas été capable de terminer!’
31 Or again, what king marching to war against another king would not first sit down and considerwhether with ten thousand men he could stand up to the other who was advancing against him with twentythousand?	31 “Si un roi part en guerre contre un autre roi, ne va-t-il pas d’abord s’asseoir et voir s’il peut avec 10 000 hommes affronter l’autre qui en amène 20 000 contre lui.
32 If not, then while the other king was still a long way off, he would send envoys to sue for peace.	32 Sinon, quand l’autre est encore loin, il envoie une ambassade pour parler de paix.
33 So in the same way, none of you can be my disciple without giving up al that he owns.	33 “C’est pareil pour vous: si on ne renonce pas à tous ses biens, on ne peut être mon disciple.”
34 'Salt is a good thing. But if salt itself loses its taste, what can make it salty again?	34 “Le sel est bon; mais si le sel perd son mordant, comment va-t-on le lui redonner?
35 It is good for neither soil nor manure heap. People throw it away. Anyone who has ears for listeningshould listen!'	35 Il n’est plus bon, ni pour la terre, ni pour le fumier, il faut le jeter dehors! Qui a des oreilles pour entendre, qu’il entende!”
