NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Jesus had now finished what he wanted to say, and he left Galilee and came into the territory ofJudaea on the far side of the Jordan.1 Et factum est, cum consummasset Jesus sermones istos, migravit a Galilæa, et venit in fines Judææ trans Jordanem,
Large crowds fol owed him and he healed them there.2 et secutæ sunt eum turbæ multæ, et curavit eos ibi.
Some Pharisees approached him, and to put him to the test they said, 'Is it against the Law for a manto divorce his wife on any pretext whatever?'3 Et accesserunt ad eum pharisæi tentantes eum, et dicentes : Si licet homini dimittere uxorem suam, quacumque ex causa ?
He answered, 'Have you not read that the Creator from the beginning made them male and female4 Qui respondens, ait eis : Non legistis, quia qui fecit hominem ab initio, masculum et feminam fecit eos ? Et dixit :
and that he said: This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and the two become one flesh?5 Propter hoc dimittet homo patrem, et matrem, et adhærebit uxori suæ, et erunt duo in carne una.
They are no longer two, therefore, but one flesh. So then, what God has united, human beings mustnot divide.'6 Itaque jam non sunt duo, sed una caro. Quod ergo Deus conjunxit, homo non separet.
They said to him, 'Then why did Moses command that a writ of dismissal should be given in cases ofdivorce?'7 Dicunt illi : Quid ergo Moyses mandavit dare libellum repudii, et dimittere ?
He said to them, 'It was because you were so hard-hearted, that Moses al owed you to divorce yourwives, but it was not like this from the beginning.8 Ait illis : Quoniam Moyses ad duritiam cordis vestri permisit vobis dimittere uxores vestras : ab initio autem non fuit sic.
Now I say this to you: anyone who divorces his wife -- I am not speaking of an il icit marriage -- andmarries another, is guilty of adultery.'9 Dico autem vobis, quia quicumque dimiserit uxorem suam, nisi ob fornicationem, et aliam duxerit, mœchatur : et qui dimissam duxerit, mœchatur.
The disciples said to him, 'If that is how things are between husband and wife, it is advisable not tomarry.'10 Dicunt ei discipuli ejus : Si ita est causa hominis cum uxore, non expedit nubere.
But he replied, 'It is not everyone who can accept what I have said, but only those to whom it isgranted.11 Qui dixit illis : Non omnes capiunt verbum istud, sed quibus datum est.
There are eunuchs born so from their mother's womb, there are eunuchs made so by human agencyand there are eunuchs who have made themselves so for the sake of the kingdom of Heaven. Let anyoneaccept this who can.'12 Sunt enim eunuchi, qui de matris utero sic nati sunt : et sunt eunuchi, qui facti sunt ab hominibus : et sunt eunuchi, qui seipsos castraverunt propter regnum cælorum. Qui potest capere capiat.
Then people brought little children to him, for him to lay his hands on them and pray. The disciplesscolded them,13 Tunc oblati sunt ei parvuli, ut manus eis imponeret, et oraret. Discipuli autem increpabant eos.
but Jesus said, 'Let the little children alone, and do not stop them from coming to me; for it is to suchas these that the kingdom of Heaven belongs.'14 Jesus vero ait eis : Sinite parvulos, et nolite eos prohibere ad me venire : talium est enim regnum cælorum.
Then he laid his hands on them and went on his way.15 Et cum imposuisset eis manus, abiit inde.
And now a man came to him and asked, 'Master, what good deed must I do to possess eternal life?'16 Et ecce unus accedens, ait illi : Magister bone, quid boni faciam ut habeam vitam æternam ?
Jesus said to him, 'Why do you ask me about what is good? There is one alone who is good. But ifyou wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.'17 Qui dixit ei : Quid me interrogas de bono ? Unus est bonus, Deus. Si autem vis ad vitam ingredi, serva mandata.
He said, 'Which ones?' Jesus replied, 'These: You shall not kil . You shall not commit adultery. Youshall not steal. You shal not give false witness.18 Dicit illi : Quæ ? Jesus autem dixit : Non homicidium facies ; non adulterabis ; non facies furtum ; non falsum testimonium dices ;
Honour your father and your mother. You shal love your neighbour as yourself.'19 honora patrem tuum, et matrem tuam, et diliges proximum tuum sicut teipsum.
The young man said to him, 'I have kept al these. What more do I need to do?'20 Dicit illi adolescens : Omnia hæc custodivi a juventute mea : quid adhuc mihi deest ?
Jesus said, 'If you wish to be perfect, go and sell your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you wil have treasure in heaven; then come, fol ow me.'21 Ait illi Jesus : Si vis perfectus esse, vade, vende quæ habes, et da pauperibus, et habebis thesaurum in cælo : et veni, sequere me.
But when the young man heard these words he went away sad, for he was a man of great wealth.22 Cum audisset autem adolescens verbum, abiit tristis : erat enim habens multas possessiones.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'In truth I tell you, it is hard for someone rich to enter the kingdom ofHeaven.23 Jesus autem dixit discipulis suis : Amen dico vobis, quia dives difficile intrabit in regnum cælorum.
Yes, I tel you again, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for someonerich to enter the kingdom of Heaven.'24 Et iterum dico vobis : Facilius est camelum per foramen acus transire, quam divitem intrare in regnum cælorum.
When the disciples heard this they were astonished. 'Who can be saved, then?' they said.25 Auditis autem his, discipuli mirabantur valde, dicentes : Quis ergo poterit salvus esse ?
Jesus gazed at them. 'By human resources', he told them, 'this is impossible; for God everything ispossible.'26 Aspiciens autem Jesus, dixit illis : Apud homines hoc impossibile est : apud Deum autem omnia possibilia sunt.
Then Peter answered and said, 'Look, we have left everything and fol owed you. What are we tohave, then?'27 Tunc respondens Petrus, dixit ei : Ecce nos reliquimus omnia, et secuti sumus te : quid ergo erit nobis ?
Jesus said to them, 'In truth I tel you, when everything is made new again and the Son of man isseated on his throne of glory, you yourselves wil sit on twelve thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel.28 Jesus autem dixit illis : Amen dico vobis, quod vos, qui secuti estis me, in regeneratione cum sederit Filius hominis in sede majestatis suæ, sedebitis et vos super sedes duodecim, judicantes duodecim tribus Israël.
And everyone who has left houses, brothers, sisters, father, mother, children or land for the sake ofmy name wil receive a hundred times as much, and also inherit eternal life.29 Et omnis qui reliquerit domum, vel fratres, aut sorores, aut patrem, aut matrem, aut uxorem, aut filios, aut agros propter nomen meum, centuplum accipiet, et vitam æternam possidebit.
'Many who are first will be last, and the last, first.'30 Multi autem erunt primi novissimi, et novissimi primi.
